Lawyer Eddie Mwitwa has said that there is a need to amend the Public Order Act at an opportune time.
Mr. Mwitwa, who is also former Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) president, has said that the controversial piece of legislation can be amended even without reviewing the Constitution.
He says the public is eager to hear from Members of Parliament who will soon resume seating.
Mr. Mwitwa says opposition political parties have long complained against the alleged unfair application of the law but now is an opportunity to amend it and make it more appropriate for all in political circles.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mwitwa says petitions are part of the constitutional democracy that Zambians have chosen as a system of governance.
Mr. Mwitwa told ZNBC news that legally, the petitions are justified but that it is up to the court to determine their validity
No need to amend the public order act right now……..
Right now there is risk of terrorist activity by disgruntled crooks who don’t have access to public funds anymore ……
The Public Order Act as it stands was long interpreted by the courts of law and hence stands amended…however its application has been at the whims of the police….including using it to hinder someone from worship….

Mr Freedom Fighter, let me remind you that ZNBC is not dead; it is a public broadcaster mandated to serve government of the day., like is the case with Zambia Daily Mail and Times of Zambia, All these institutions have been established to project government policies, that’s why as soon as a new government comes in, they too change to serve the incomimg government. We have a lot of private newspapers as well as private tv and radio stations around, so why worry about the public media? Let the public media remain the way it is. It would be a big mistake for UPND to allow them to operate as private media. Who will speak for them when there is a problem?
#7Kakubeka, it’s obvious many people don’t understand the role of ZNBC. They expect TVZ to “insult” government in order for it to be independent. The service is there apart from educating and entertainment to explain and show the public works by government. Less than a month ago Upnd members at my club used to walk out whenever it was news time. Since the election, they now stay glued to the screen while PF members walk out.
The ZNBC should be neutral and be for the people not a propaganda machine of the govt .
