Traders protest, politically motivated- Mwandila

Share

Mufulira Town Clerk Charles Mwandila has described the protest by traders against the implementation of the revised trade licensing fees for 2009 as politically motivated.

Mr. Mwandila said it was not clear why traders in the district have decided to protect against the local authority now, when the Statutory instrument was signed by Commerce Minister Felix Mutati in June this year.

The revised trade licensing fees are contained in a Statutory Instrument Act number 65 of 2008.

“Why should traders in Mufulira be the only ones to protest over the fees when the instrument was issued in June, why this time? He asked.

He said the motive behind the protest will be deemed political, because the Statutory Instrument came in effect at the time it was signed on behalf of Government.

Traders in Mufulira staged a protest against the council yesterday, for implementing the Statutory Instrument issued by the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry on revised trades licensing fees for 2009.

The license fees have been increased from K90,000 to K400,000 per year for new applicants and renewals.

Traders are complaining that the fees are too high, compared to their monthly income earnings and that the council did not consult them before effecting the adjustment.

“The fees were revised by Government after consultations so if they are too high, why should they protest against the council,” Mr. Mwandila asked.

He said the council informed the traders through notices that were issued last month, which indicated that the fees had been adjusted upwards.

He advised the aggrieved traders to direct their complaints to the Ministry of Commerce, not to the council.

  1. Too much!!! K90,000 to K400,000. Guys, did u listen to Sata on today’s ‘Let the People talk’program on QFM. He really made gud points.

  2. That is an increament of more than 100%. Ka Mwandila ichongo. Guys bushe kachilipo aka ka guy. I thought kalinaka!

Just seen Mufulira in that photo. Very nice. It has improved. No wonder people are saying Zambia is developing. Blimey!

  3. Politics!!!! Well lets see how far the issue goes. This issue has indeed come at the right time when GRZ is still in control. As a compaign strategy, I woundn`t be surprised if RB Revised them just to get a vote.

  4. Mufulira traders, don’t worry, PF will come and ammend the SI from K400, 000 to K200, 000.
Councils in Zambia do not provide tangible services to the community.
    Why pay all that amount????

  5. #2 This photo is not Mufulira but Kitwe. The person taking it, was standing next to Euro bus terminus. To your left is where Chani fisheries used to operate from.

  6. THE SLOGAN OF MORE MONEY IN THE POCKET MAY SEEM GOOD BUT BEWARE OF MR SATA. I ASK MYSELF WHERE WILL THE MONEY COME FROM. REMEMBER THAT WE HAD ECONOMIC PROBLEM DURING THE KAUNDA TIMES DUE TO FREE THINGS. AS ZAMBIAN WE SHOLUD LEARN TO PAY FOR GOODS AND SERVICES AT COST IF ARE TO HAVE ECONOMIC GROWTH.
MAYBE WE DO NOT PAY ENOUGH FOR THE SERVICES. IF BREAD COST K 2000 AND WE PAY K500, I WONDER HOW LONG THE BREAD WILL BE PRODUCED. ORGANISATIONS GO UNDER DUE TO THIS

  7. remember the buses you enjoy in zed was sata’s idea,by having more buses and bus operators paying taxes by buying gas,the load was lifted off the ordinary zambian.if you pay less tax it means you have more money left for spending, thats what we the pf mean by more money in your pockets, not more money kwati ku zim no no no

  8. Sata calls someone who is 46 years old “Under 5”. On the mistaken belief that HH is a Chartered Accountant he calls him “Calculator boy”. If this man is the answer to anything, then the question must be very ridiculous.

  9. The increment from hard-earned K90,000 to impossibly attainable K400,000 is unrealistic! lets face it folks, what does the Council do in Mufulira? The trading areas are as dirty and filthy as they can me. Surely people are not blind! The money is needed for salaries and not to provide the much needed services. In case we are forgetting, councils in Zed don’t provide services anymore!

  15. K400,000 translates to K 33,333 per month so it is not a lot of money but the problem is that even if Mufurila Council gets this money they will just use it on paying salaries PERIOD.

On the hand If there are also other levies that they are slaping on these traders such as fire inspection licence fees etc then it is too much for them.

  16. No#2, that is not Mufulira and it will never be! that,s why u r SUCH A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSER with SATA and HH. R U a POLYGAMIST/BIGAMIST too?

  20. This an increament of more than 300 % and its not normal at any standard. The GVt must be realistic. They may not win elections because of this. This gvt is pinitive to its own people. Why cant they do it gradually? Its like they were sleeping and have just woken up and made that decision

  21. VJ achimwa kale in today’s post with callers who told him not to rig elections. This mbuya of mine just like Sata will die poor because of his appetite for women. He has a chain of children all over the country. He is also hanging on to politics because he has no qualifications for jobs outside politics. He is a disgrace to the hard working tongas or may it is a mistake in his name. Probably his real name is Vernon Mwansa becuse all his attributes point to somebody who hails from the north.

  22. #31,Pastor Judas scaliot,it`s a sub-marine,know how it works?we call it ubwato so that u 2 understand better since u come from a family of fishermen.
What we are crying for is the re-orginising of our institutions, can`t you see that political offices have more say and funding than our constitutional offices.
It is this simple,Kaunda left no traces of university closures, and what has the MMD done? is it still a problem for u 2 understand that EDUCATION is the fuel for a nation.Go back 2 school, church later…
