The future of Zambia’s oldest football cup competition is uncertain after a protracted delay in the kickoff of this years tournament.
The Mosi Cup that has been running interrupted since 1961 under the aegis of the local clear beer brewing monopoly Zambian Breweries (ZB).
A source close to the situation commenting on recent press reports over Faz’s concerns with the delay said this years kickoff was looking bleak.
“You know, it is very unlikely that it (The Mosi Cup) will take place this season but if it does it will be under a different format,” the source said.
Faz has expressed its exasperation in the press over the last 2 weeks with ZB’s delay in committing to this years Mosi Cup.
The Mosi Cup’s marathon run was due to start in June with the preliminary rounds involving amateur sides kicking each other out of the grueling event before the big guns entered the fray in August and September.
Red Arrows are the current defending champions after beating Zesco United 3-2 on post-match penalties after a 2-2 draw in last years final played at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka on December 15.
Mufulira Wanderers are the all-time record winners of the tournament with 9 titles and last won the Mosi Cup in 1995.
The tournament have gone through three lives in its 47-years of life firstly in the pre-and-post independence era as the Castle Cup before being rechristened as the Independence Cup in 1974 and later the Mosi Cup in 1993.
We drink mosi everyday but you fail to sponsor the cup, SHAME ON YOU i will sell the company to Heineken.
This is the reason Zambians need to get into the habit of signing contracts that have a clear stipulation of what happens in case one of the parties pulls out or breaches it’s part of the agreement. Just because ZB is sponsoring this does not mean they should be free to do what they want.
FAZ get some ideas from Ponga Liwewa, he has a lot of experience in sponsorship and the rest, sponsors should be fighting to sponsor stuff like this, wake up, ZED even when given something on a silver plate you want someone to lift it and put it in your mouth! The only thing we seem to know how to run are Tuntemba!
I do not blame Zambia Breweries one bit; they are not obliged to sponsor any sport event. FAZ has a mandate to source sponsorship for these events. There are a vast array of businesses out there that would be more than willing to undertake thuis paths if only the football avenue was opened.
King #4, and one of those companies is……………….Zambian Breweries.Ever heard of Corporate Social Responsibility.
iwe #4. FAZ is doing exactly ifyo fine from ZB. U know FAZ? the side of their bread which is buttered has only ZB. Challenge me- if FAZ wants to source other sponsors, they will have to look for SPONSORS TO FINANCE THEIR QUEST FOR THE MOSI CUP SPONSORSHIP!!And that prospective new sponsor would only want to pay for only 18%. And on top bring in their hand-picked FAZ president, on expatriet conditions of service. Plus! land in a gemstone-rich area, diplomatic passports, and 7 years PAYE and profit tax weaver for their company!!! Better ZB, man!!
ZB should pay back for the rot they bring to Zambia!! Viva Mosi Cup
Bola pa Zed is crap!!
there is a shortage of mosi and romour has it that ZB will stop producing mosi soon, they want to concentrate on castle which is well known trade mark in africa, remember mosi 7’s the rugby tourney, its been changed to castle sevens.all mosi lovers watch out
In classsic Zed style, we are blaming the sponsor and not the football administrators. You voted that imitation of an executive at FAZ to ran your football affairs. That is not a team that can speak to any CEO and plead their case for football sponsorship!!! Let them sell themselves, that is their job, not yours and not the job of ZB, Zain, MTN or Access bank.
No wonder why they are finding it difficult to sponcor the tournament if the rumour about fasing out the Mosi Juice is true. Too bad for lovers of the comodity. Anyway, guys, its never too late to convert to castle.
Does it mean that Zambia will have no local lager of its own? When abroad, how are we going to be telling fellow gazlars when they ask us about the name and taste of our local lager back home.
Kilimanjaro of Tanzania, Simba of DRC, Bohlingers of Zimbabwe, Kuche Kuche of Malawi, Tusker of Kenya, Nile of Uganda, Windhoek of Namibia, Laurentina of Mozambique, Castle of South Africa.
And Zambia ??
PEEPS DO U EVEN KNOW THAT ZB ISNT OURS ANYMORE THE GOT BOUGHT OUT BY SAB.DAMN
#8 This is not a fora for demeaning remarks, u can do better, all is not lost u can change my sister!
Not anyone knows want going on with zb,not good for zambia.sorry.
Brighton.
Firstly they steal the machine that bottles Coca Cola from Zambia and send it to South Africa and force us to import canned fizzy drinks. Next they distort the brewing formula for Mosi beer which used to be number 1 in Africa so as to give Castle an advantage. Now they externalise the profits from the beer sales and fizzy drinks sales abroad and hence have no money to sponsor the local league when they still sponsor tournaments in South Africa using profits from African countries like Zambia. Shame on us Zambians for leting outsiders to come and have a field day here and leave us in this state.
You do not give away all your cows and expect to be having milk everyday. We are paying for selling our companies to foreigners like sweets. What do we own now? NOTHING!!!
Mines to Indians and Chinese
Cement to …
Cooking oil to …
Zanaco to…..
You know the rest!!!!!!
South African Breweries bought Zambia Breweries, but with a change of policy, we can buy back some shares. That is why we need to elect an intelligent president on Oct. 30. SO simple, we just buy back some shares!!
Can some one updates us on Esther Phiri’s latest fight?
Sorry folks. I know this is a wrong place but just want to update the guy from US.
Esther Phiri won. I think she has no size in her category. She needs to advance.
