President Michael Sata has directed newly appointed deputy minister of agriculture in charge of animal husbandry Luxon Kazabu to carry a stock of the number of animals such as goats in the Eastern, Western, Southern and North-Western provinces.
President Sata said that the 4 provinces have a lot of goats which can be slaughtered and sold to the Middle East where there is demand for goat meat. The President said that there are a lot of countries especially in the Middle East that have shown interest to start importing livestock such as goats from Zambia.
President Sata notes that Mr. Kazabu should take time to make the people of southern province understand what government policies are on the country’s agriculture sector especially how they can work with the government in finding a market for the meat products.
Mr. Sata directed Mr. Kazabu to urgently take an audit of the number of livestock across the country so that Zambia enters into joint meat commissions with other countries.
Mr Sata also claimed that the opposition has dented the image of the government because of the bad things that some political parties have continued to tell the people in the area diverting their attention from things of national important.
President Sata was speaking at statehouse this morning when he swore-in Mr. Kazabu.
And President Michael Sata has directed the Ministry of Works, Supply, and Transport to work out modalities on the construction of rural roads, which are cost effective and suitable for chiefdoms.
Mr. Sata said that he is keen to ensure that rural roads receive attention as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, President Sata has urged traditional leaders to give land to genuine investors. Mr. Sata said this was because some chiefs have been allergic to land development and mineral prospecting for more than one hundred years.
The President said this in a speech read for him by Vice President Guy Scott at the official opening of the House of Chiefs in Lusaka on Wednesday.
And House of Chiefs Chairperson Chief Madzimawi says traditional leaders should be involved in formulating proposals on the construction of rural roads in chiefdoms.

The goats in question are used by rural families for their own needs and may not be of the quality required to export. Folks, people are already selling goat meat to the middle East from Zambia. Kenyans go and camp in Zambia for months…just stocking up on goat meat. They then export it through Nairobi to the mid East were demand is endless and money is no issue. And they are helped by Zambians. The president may have said it in a manner you don’t like but goat meat is good business. It can create sustainable jobs and wealth for our subsistence goat headers. MCS has seen the potential. You can realize it as an individual or as usual just keep observing while foreigners mint the gold from the goats or even better wait for the government to build huge commercial farms for you to boast about. You cant export what you dont have. If Zambia has an abundance of goats, Animal husbandry should be focussing on how to get full commercial value from these. However, export business has/will never be realised with strategical approach muted by Mr Sata. Mr Sata begins by saying only four provinces have enough goats for meat for export. Zambeef as a company exports beef to West Africa, even if we’re not competitive in beef trading as a nation. Its the president’s job to think of the country first. For a citizen, its the self first. What does it take for oneself to compete? Here is a true scenario. Kenyan and Tanzanian trucks make regular deliveries of things like soap products, and other things coming through their ports to the CB and DRC. They don’t want their trucks going back empty. Somalians and Senegalese load those trucks with live goats, cattle, timber and artifacts bought cheaply from unsuspecting subsistence level Zambians. Why shouldn’t it be our relatives working with these truckers?

Zambia as a country hasn’t got goats of its own. Zambians own these goats and govrnment has never assisted goat owners in ensuring animals are vaccinated and diesease free. Owners sell them or consume meat as and when need arises. To make such a statement is taking goat owners for granted that govt would exploit them as they do with maize farmers by offering them little money for their goats. That is un workable according to PF agriculture strategy. May be Guy Scott based on pig gate scandle is lecturing Mr Sata over export of goat meat. The first objective PF need to look at is to reate a national strategy such as that of cattle management. Zambeef has this strategy hence, its able to export beef. In this scheme work with goat small farmers, offer them good prices to encourage many.
what do you expect from a country with 55% (majority) population with non-agricultural, but trader’s mind. All they see is quick money. The president should not be talking about selling the products before he plants and harvests it. Add to that transportation from remote rural villages in Zambia to a place where the meat or the animals can be collected to be transported to the middle east.

Interesting, i think will be difficult to export village goeats cause no proper health standards etc. But a good idea, maybee they should modify and refine that idea. iam a goat farmer and would like to export goat meat. Now what is the procedure. I need to take advantage of this good news.
We also need to find ways of exporting the cashew nuts falling off the trees in Western province. They are in demand and damn expensive in the GCC countries. Am sure Ukwa meant well though can be seen from a number of bloggers that this has been taken out of context. Ukwa is looking at finding markets for our small scale and subsistence farmers instead of always looking for infestors to bring money into your economy.We shouldn’t restrict our small scale farmers to Chibolya abbatoir markets or Soup Ya Mbuzi joints only.
For your own info, you find goat meat (from Kenya, Sudan, Pakistani, India), pork sausages (Yes, you heard me right, Pork!!, from Kenya), maize meal (Iwisa, from RSA) in GCC supermarkets. These are in high demand and damn expensive.

The president is not a technocrat with regards to agriculture. What he has done is planted a seed for the Agricultural minister to nurture. The gist of his message is there is an opportunity and we need to get our house in order to exploit it. Every country conducts a livestock census on all animals within the country and with no current commercial goat industry in Zambia, census of the rural stock is only place to start. From there we can now start looking at the fitness traits of the animals in Zambia and establish a good breeding stock. In my humble opinion, this industry should be cooperative based as opposed to having a few large commercial farmers as players. It is the only way that the benefits of this industry will be truly felt by the several small players who will be able to part

Mr. Prezido zambia does not even have enough goat due to lacky of enough medicine for the farmers to treat their animals the little they have dont qualify for international export.Before we start thinking of sluaghtering and selling to middle east let us improve our livestock so that it will be on a long term bases remember this should not be one off transation.Botswana has invested in it livestock industry it was not just a directive from the head of state through the minister but it was well planned. thanx

Its comforting to note many Zambians can’t buy ‘Goat Export’ PF agriculture strategy to stimulate employment and economic growth in Zambia. However, The Engineer (Australia) has ablely lectured Zambians the source of ‘goat export’ complex microeconomics muted by Sata. Some Zambians still believe the goat export mantra with all its obvious fallacy arguments. Where are Sata’s economic advisors? Talk about fish from Luapula, Kafue, Zambezi, Luangwa and lake mwelu for export or just maize/meal to DRC not to mention other starving nations in Africa. Export market exist and all is needed is to harness it. Goat meat! Be real Sata.

You cant instruct a minister to undertake such an important technical exercise in the press… Education is power…This goat export business sounds ridiculous but on the flip side it makes a bit of some sense. What matters is the calibre of people to implement and direct these programmes. If you have illiterate cadres as Directors, Permanent Secretaries, etc as implementers, then failure will surely be the end result…
The president may have a good point but the article is not devod of confusion. It is not clear whether Zambia is going to export live goats or slaughtered ones. In one sentence the president is reported to say that countries in the Middle East can be sold goat meat. In the next it stated that he says countries in the Middle East are interested in importing Zambian goats. Which is which? On the whole, the minister must ensure that the experts help farmers with the best methods of rearing goats in order for the country to have healthy animals that will fetch higher prices.
