INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police Stella Libongani has instituted investigations to ascertain what transpired when police quelled a United Party for National Development (UPND) demonstration last week.
In a statement issued in Lusaka after meeting UPND president Hakainde Hichilema yesterday, Ms Libongani also assured that police will carry out their duties in a professional manner.
She said Mr Hichilema complained about police’s reaction to the UPND youths’ demonstration, which was stopped on June 6.
“I have taken note of his complaint and have, therefore, requested him to gather all the documented evidence that was submitted to us pertaining to the intended demonstrations. My office has also instituted investigations on this issue and shall give a response in due course,” the statement reads.
Ms Libongani appealed to members of the public wishing to put up notification for demonstrations to adhere to the Public Order Act.
The UPND has complained of alleged police brutality during the demonstration.
Mr Hichilema on Monday stormed Lusaka Province Commissioner Charity Katanga’s office, demanding to know why the demonstration was nipped at source.
The youths intended to demonstrate in support of what they called an independent judiciary.

The IG has been in the Police Service for so many years and she is also qualified for the job. Why let yourselves, women so carelessly? Would you like her to just be a house wife, then that would be good for your? There are challenges in Zambian politics today. Much of it is just bitterness where you don’t feel happy that your friend has won to rule. They can’t even wait from day one its all battle to unseat the winner before he even sorts out the previous regimes mistakes. We have read the Public Order Act and we understand it. We also know know that we have we have Human Rights as enshrined in the Constitution. It seems the Police and all PF Cadres are ignorant about all these issues or maybe they need knowlegeable people to interprete these issues for them. The Public Order Act does not talk about obtaining permits, it talks about giving the police notice. And why probe HH, because Kabimba a few weeks ago said PF will send cadres to Sudan. Who told them they had the right to beat them up. Zambia is not a police state and this should not be tolerated! People should not be fooled that the IG is doing this out of professionalism. She has just found herself in a tight corner because she has been instructed by GBM to probe HH over petty issues relating to his utterances and yet an issue where citizens were brutalised by Police was not taken serious enough for an investigation. Otherwise the announcement to investigate should have been done last week at the same speed has it has been done in the case of HH. Still no credibility from where I am standing…

When I say black people can’t manage their affairs some individuals think Im demeaning blacks but look at how your police force is applying double stands; UPND notified the police a week before holding their peaceful demo as required by law and were brutalized while the PF women never followed the law and held an illegal demo at Muvi Tv can someone tell me how many of those PF women were brutalized or arrested?
