The 24 year old Robaina Muteka has died. Robiana died shortly after midnight. Robiana who had a huge mass removed from his back was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer.

University Teaching Hospital Public relation manager Pauline Mbangweta has confirmed to ZNBC news few on Wednesday morning. Ms Mbangweta says the hospital is really saddened by the death of Robiana.

She says doctors and hospital staff worked hard to improve his life. Robaina was early this week put on oxygen at ICU after he developed breathing problems.

On Monday, Robiana Muteka, who recently underwent an operation at University Teaching Hospital (UTH) to remove a tumour from his back, was admitted to the UTH’s main Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The neural fibro myoma (tumour) had completely covered his left lung and has displaced the heart from its position.

Last week, Robiana, a resident of Livingstone, underwent a computerised tomography scan which revealed an extended growth of neural fibro myoma (tumour) on the left lung.

This resulted in him gasping for air, a condition that has compelled doctors to move him to the ICU, according to UTH managing director Luckson Kasonka.

Dr Kasonka said Robiana has been connected to the oxygen machine to assist him to breath as his left lung has been rendered ‘useless’ after being covered by the tumour.

Dr Kasonka said the tumour, which was growing rapidly, had also affected the functions of the heart as it (the heart) has been displaced from its position.

“The heart is located on the left side of the lungs and because the tumour had completely covered that lung, this had also affected the functioning of the heart. “It (heart) is not pumping well and because only one lung is working, breathing has become a problem and it is for this reason that we have decided to move the patient to the ICU and connect him to an oxygen machine,” Dr Kasonka said.

He said blood circulation had also been affected as the tumour has interfered with the heart, which pumps blood. Dr Kasonka explained that Robiana’s anaemia was not improving despite blood transfusion.

Robiana was evacuated to UTH from Livingstone in March this year following President Sata’s directive to enable him to access specialist treatment for his back tumour. A specialised team of doctors at UTH removed a 14.5 kilogramme tumour from his back but apparently, a tumour known as neural fibro myoma has extended to his left lung.

  1. Medicine and politics should not be mixed. Why did the doctors initially say that the tumor was not degerious. Did they want to impress Sata? Why did the tumor suddenly change and become cancerous. The hospital should be sued for wrong diagnosis

    • Mashimba, I agree with you. It keeps me wondering why a senior educated kasonka can say such thngs on public media and later revert on his words….it’s so sad…

    • Cancer seems to behave like that. Doctors discover a cancerous growth on say your toe or breast, and all investigations tell them its safe to cut is out, just to discover later that a few  cancerous cells had spread to your lungs or your brain and they can’t cut them out. It never gets cured but only goes into remission. That’s why the affliction remains the highest killer in the developed world.

May the guy’s soul rst in eternal peace.

    • I would not start pointing fingers at any human being. Whatever has happened God knows the reason. If Robiana walked out of hospital healed you would not say what you have said. The doctors did the best they could but God has a final answer. Let the Robiana Rest in Peace.

    • you should understand that the tumor he had at the back was different from the one in the lungs. these dull Zambian doctors cannot understand this.We don’t have proper scanners which can determine the nature of tumors but only experience and i can tell you that not everyone agreed that this was non cancerous but the so called senior docs. we are nobodies to disagree we followed the seniors.rest in p[eace

    • Gentlemen,

when death takes place people normally want to put a blame on somebody. The people who are blaming the UTH  Consultants and Doctors must give us the Qualifications they have in Medicine to show that there criticism are genuine.

Death is one tragedy which has made science and scientist believe in a mistry but the answers can only be found in the Bible which is Gods word.

The Goodnews is that the Bible informs us that there will be a ressuraction of the both the righteous and the unrighteous.Jehovah is the one who knows the people who will be resurrected in the new world order.

    • Guys, this is a tragedy. Health does sometimes have a tendency to not show the full severity of a condition. Dont be petty and malicious. MHRIP. Kudos to the doctors for trying, and to Mr. Sata for having made an effort. Please dont be petty.

  2. Too bad for the young man, everything within our powers was done, hands off to our president – it’s just time that was already prepared for him that he had to go this time. Condolences to the family.

  3. I new UTH were not capable of such complex operations. Can we improve our hospitals please??? Let us not make hospitals a campaign issue but be real.

  4. #2 I don’t know much about medicine , I have the same suspicion you do. This case should not have been used to score political points and I have a feeling the doctors operated in a rush to just please the political masters. They should have studied this for probably even 3 to 6 months before diving in to cut. Am sure there could have been a better treatment of the tumour using perhaps laser technology not at the UTH than rushing to cut with knives and please the politicians

    Anyway MHSRIP my friend

    • hope you are a medical doctor yourself. The professionals did what they could and this had totally nothing to do with politics. Mind you politicians also are human beings and they are affected by empathy as much as we all do. Its just sad that he has died but the doctors and the well meaning politicians did their best.

  5. SAD NEWS INDEED………..! MAY GOD GRANT THE FAMILY THE MUCH NEEDED SOLACE DURING THIS TRYNG MOMENT…………..MHSRIP…

  6. Death in Africa ni so chabe, it comes with rants and finger pointing. All is well now Robaina, you are in your maker’s hands. We will all link up with you later.

  7. UTH should just recommend evacuations to rsa/india on such complicated matters, instead of trying to experiment the little knowledge gotten from Ridge way Campus

  8. Ok wait a minute. Why did it take the president directive for the guy to be given specialised treatment at UTH? Is it that the doctors in livingstone were not competent enough to undestand the seriousness of the matter untill directed br the president? How many more zambians are under going the same pain only waiting for the mercy of the president, minister, or any prominent person to identify that the situation needs special treatment? Ok guys lets be seriuos with what we do. in real terms in is gross negligence by the doctors in livingstone for hesitating sending the guy for specialised treatment.

  9. Depsite always boasting and saying they are among the best in the world, Zambian doctors are failures. There goes another death.

    • I bet there are no deaths in south Africa, India, America, Europe where the best doctors are, according to you fool. Useless thinking. Man can only do so much. Period. our Zed doctors try without even specialised equipment.

    • Iwe ka Donchi these same failures were parading themselves on TV saying they had succeeded and that Zambian doctors can do anything. Why didnt they spot this cancer at first if they are that good? Atleast in those places you have mentioned they dont boast before they exhaust every diagnosis.

  10. @2 Mashimba and 2.1  Catherine

Cancer seems to behave like that. Doctors discover a cancerous growth on say your toe or breast, and all investigations tell them its safe to cut is out, just to discover later that a few  cancerous cells had spread to your lungs or your brain and they can’t cut them out. May the guy’s soul rst in eternal peace.

  11. May God streangthen this family and continue shining His light of love and peace to the family during this painful moment. I can imagine the sufering and the pain he went through. Rest in peace Robiana..!

  12. Too bad, when these politicians have flu or a stomach upset, they are flown to south Africa, India and allover and for poor Robiana it had to be UTH for a complex operation, shame.

  13. Robians Death comes as a shock and loss to many zambians. We just thank all those people including our his excellence the President, Michael Chilufya Sata for the love we have shown to the family of the Muteka’s. Robiana was a bright young man with promised future but death always is always Jealous and difficult to comprehend in times like this. as the family moarns Robiana we too are moarning with them and may God almighty strengthen the family, May his soul rest In eternal Peace.

    Ernesto

  14. happy is robiana who is with the Lord. pressure is now on us who are still living, lets cry for ourselves.may his soul rest in the Lord, till we meet again.

  15. this was definitly imminent.our zambian doctors and the entire health practitioners fraternity continue to show their incompetence.much as the new cancer can be justified we shouldnt be blamed because as far as we are concerned our wories have also been justified.they were busy singing praises when that growth was removed, certainly given the period of time gone by they should’ve given an indivation or perharps seen something of the like

  16. a presidential directive has lead to a death of an innocent Zambian soul who Professional Doctors in Livingstone refused to operate on due to obvious complications. PF cadre doctors at UTH followed a presidential directive and look now. Robiana is no more. How desperate can sata be? Just to create a photo opportunity for Dr. Kaseba, he orders the impossible. This guy is so unprofessional. He orders impossible things- Chikopo tribunal, move chirundu to Lusaka, Take over Zanaco and Zamtel, Donate 5 million litres of gas to malawi, give matani the thief his bank. With the civil service full of PF cadres, the worst directives yet to come

    • Youngman or watever u call yoself. this is not a joke. Death is death. u can die from anything. do u think the president would like someone to die? no… dont start politicking over Robiana’s death. Let him rest in peace.

Just work hard and see this country develop. Logically, Chirundu is near lsk and not livingstone for administrative purposes. Zamtel u knw deep down yo heart that it ws politically and corruptly given out free of charge. wat do u knw about security of the country. dont u knw that we exposed our country’ secrets to other countries, morova, Libya? think twice and use yo brain.

  17. #7, Ba Bootlicker, I can’t phantom where you get the guts to comment in that manner. It is your reign that has failed this young man and many others suffering like him. Surely, did it have to take a change of GRZ for Robiana to be identified and referred? That tumor was not 9 months old. This is what killed MMD, you guys lost he human touch. The masses became objects, like pawns in a chess game, used for selfish advancement only. Anyway, keep licking …

  18. If Robiana was taken to India where Chimbwi went, I am sure the operation was going to be done in at least three stages not the way these PF cadre doctors did. Removing 10kg of tumor is no joke. Anyway, I dont question the competence of these PF doctors, but the competence of University Senates that conferred degree upon them

    • General Mushala,

what qualifications do you hold in Medicine? You need to tell us what degree in Surgery or any other to justify your recommendation to have evacuated the late Robiana Muteka to India.Death happens all the time my young brother or man.

Its difficult to understand it but Jehovah who is our father in the Heavens knows that we are all sinners and we can die at any time even with very modern Hospitals around.

  19. aren’t people supposed to do a biopsy to confirm the nature of the tumor prior to surgery? considering that the growth was so big, in this case growth was accelerated and the amount of pain he was subjected to. he just needed a peaceful death.

  20. Shame on you have taken away an innocent soul Robiana. In the first place why did have to take the President’s order for the boy to be taken to UTH? I smell a rotten RAT here and this has to do with SATANISM and HOMOSEXUALITY being propagated by these selfish HOMOS

  21. I have no words, they experimented on him to please Ukwa who used him to try and gain popularity. Why did he go to India and not UTH for his own treatment? We told you to just improve hospitals and stop picking on isolated cases, so that you please people who don’t reason.
Shameless people, God will punish you!

  22. Too bad and condolences to the family of Robaina, death is death bane lets no blame anyone here….. we need a Robaina National moaning te? Ok c u in heaven wen u will gin us a testimony bro…

  23. Our doctors should stop playing politics with patients.Robiana had lived for 24 years with that growth.due to funny nedicinal gymnastics at uth boy has died. How i wish he had been evacuated to SA or wherever maybe the story would have been different.

  24. Some things are better left alone. Cancer cannot just be cured through ablation alone (removal of infected or affected tissues), even when benine a series of test are conducted to determine whether to operate or start the Chemotherapy! My great aunt died one week after attempted operation to remove her fibroids at UTH. When she was opened up, her tissues were almost rotting, the doctors couldn’t do anything and left her to die with an open tummy. She was smelling and died a painful death – a week later! I had hope for the young man ! Do we have sophisticated equipment to diagonise cancerous tissues in the body at UTH? MYSRIP Young man. Your death will compel the government to beef its equipment and personnel to handle such complicated cases. UTH must not paly ‘Doctor House’ !

  25. Zambians! Zambians! Zambians i wonder what is wrong with the people in this country can we please morn our brother in peace stop pointing fingers, what would you have done if you were in sata’s shoes that tumor was long over due even if he was operated on outside the country chances he could have died are very high even Ben CARSON Fails sometimes. and please dont always insult doctors they did the best they could. Kunda died in UTH pls people die everywhere that is why its Gods secret lets accept and morn in harmony. bro rest in peace

  26. #26 Steleki, I concur with you. On the Copperbelt we would say Ba Bootlicker ‘balitinina lunshi pa menso’. No sense of shame. Indeed keep licking!

  27. Death is something very difficult to understand, it’s only God who knows when. All efforts were done by our doctors and all medical staff at UTH only that God made it that way things would happen. Those that are close to UTH would know how underfunded and understaffed the institution is.We should commend them for the good work and urge the GRZ to improve on the funding. To youngman’s mother, we share the sorrow and we are together in prayers. MHSRIP

  28. I would not start pointing fingers at any human being. Whatever has happened God knows the reason. If Robiana walked out of hospital healed you would not say what you have said. The doctors did the best they could but God has a final answer. Let Robiana Rest in Peace.

  29. RIP, our country surely needs people who will love and do things from their hearts, not for some political mileage or some other motives.

  30. MMD Bootlicker #7 “SAYS, I don’t know much about medicine” for goodness sake is their anything that you know much apart from bootlicking in MMD? Grow up get a profession and we want to search for your professional papers on the net, for me its just a touch on the search engine and you see my professional papers, not just commenting on issues that u dont know. Mambala iwe, how can we cut with knives in this sense u mean mango knives???

  31. #7 MMD Chief Bootlicker and #2 Mashimba….its appears you are the ones mixing health and politics.. clearly you have no clue on medicine in general..its a tumor for crying out loud..there are what we call micro metastasis which are small tumors from the original tumor travelling through blood to the lungs or other organs..and 70% percent of the time we cant diagnosis them even the latest technology until they grow to some size..the type of tumor he had is that kind that grows fast..which im sure by the time it was detected it was too late…i suspect he was in the last 4th stage of the disease and perhaps doctors missed it..what ever the case tumor always call for surgery..palliative or radical..

  32. The death of Robaina iz very sad. A bad decizion iz better than none at all. Whether or not politiks are at play in the deceazed young man’z tumour case, the late breast cancer lady from Chingola, and or indeed in the latest case of a 24 year woman with overgrown breasts, the fact remainz that somebody decided to do something about the situation. This iz no time to point fingerz at anybody.

  33. so sorry fo this development. mhsrp. only problem is that so far for ‘chimbwi no plan’ things not ok for him. anythinh he ventures in turns out negative….please pray for chimbwi no plan so that his intentions can become positive for zambians.

  34. VERY SAD INDEED. MHSRI. May the good Lord our God grant the family of Robiana THE PEACE. The death of a SAINT like Robiana pleases the Lord.

  35. Looks like the cancer had spread to other parts of the body and the inoperable tumour in his left lung is the cause of death and not 14.5kg tumour that was initially removed from his backside
The cold hand of death has struck again and taken one of our own
    MHSRIEP

  36. I agree with # 2. Politics will continue for Robiana, starting with Sata himself you will see how he will Behave during funeral. Another national mourning right there.

  37. oh how sad.Drs in Livingstone knew that they shouldn’t operate but due to Presidential directives this kid was operated on.I think Sata should do what he does best -being an oppositon leader,Dr Kaseba focus on Obs and Gynae leave ONCOLOGY to the experts.

  38. The ‘small’ doctors in Livingstone were RIGHT after all.
The Consultant Gynaecologist cum first lady, without information said that Zambian doctors can also do ‘wonders’ given the support. Now we know that this poor young man has been sent to his death spending his last months in hospital when he could have been at home ALL because of Politics.
Was the tumour malignant? A neurofibroma is not malignant but a neurofibrosarcoma is. Otherwise it was a plexiform neurifibroma which can become malignant. Removal of this is difficult and a combination of radiation therapy and ACE inhibitors and other novel drugs may be used.

  39. HIGHLY PERSONALISED TREATMENT OF rOBAINA at Universiity Killing Hospital under the gude of ukwa, sorry Robaina MYSRIN, you treatment was highly politicised

  40. Why is this case been politicised ? Many people die in UTH and all over with all sorts of tumours and other diseases, the “helth sector” is horrendous.
