Government, Lungu Family Enter Mediation to Break Funeral Deadlock

In a significant turn of events, the Government of Zambia and the family of the late Sixth Republican President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, have formally sat down for mediated talks in a bid to break the deadlock over his funeral arrangements.

The discussions, announced jointly, mark the first concrete step toward resolving tensions that have lingered since the former Head of State’s passing in June 2025.

“We have agreed to employ a mediated process that will uphold the dignity of the late President while addressing the concerns of his family,” the statement declared, signaling a pathway out of weeks of uncertainty.

The dispute, which has drawn intense public attention and speculation, revolves around how best to balance national protocols with the family’s wishes. The mediation process is expected to provide a dignified resolution that reflects both state traditions and personal sensitivities.

The Government and the Lungu family further appealed to the public and all stakeholders to respect the privacy of the mediation process and refrain from speculation as discussions progress.

The late President Lungu’s passing has drawn significant national and regional attention, with arrangements for his burial being closely followed by the public.

Officials say the mediation process is expected to pave the way for a resolution that balances state protocols with the wishes of the family.

  1. Government is just torturing the Lungu family, there is no law in Zambia currently that gives government any powers over the funeral and burial of ECL, the man who was to be castrated by scott free UPND cadres. Government should concentrate on sorting out the unprecedented high cost of living and load shedding. In any funeral, it is the family first that makes decisions of their loved one regardless of whether somebody was a former head of state or ordinary person

    • And the lawlessness and cheek in this country is unprecedented, the court says Bill 7 is unlawful and a speaker is saying she is waiting for the executive to revive it so that it can go ahead. Unbelievable

    • Let the family burry him in South Africa, according to his wish. Why is UPND making this a political game, to gain scores.

    • Ati castrated? Is that how bodies are identified, or is it a concern about interference with the UKA witch doctors from Petauke/Mozambique sent by Jay Jay. We are exhibiting backwardness as a nation on the global stage

  2. Before his decomposed corpse is shipped back and deposited in that yawning hole at Embassy Park, he should first tell us who released the presidential jet to damn Malanji and Yamba to Ankara to steal all those millions of dollars? I think the house in eSwatini and those Esther houses were all bought from the money they stole from the Treasury!

  3. Mulilo Kabesha will ensure Lungu’s remains are brought back, stored unrefrigerated at Chimbokaila until his estate brings back all they have stolen from us, just because the thief is dead dies not mean our money is also dead, no, tuleshifwaya indalama shesu!

  4. this should have been the approach from the start you cannot litigate emotions…please agree and let us bury our President let him rest..please

    • I think they don’t want him to rest. Lets just mummify him and ask the Egyptians for space at one of the pyramids

    • @ Mapungubwe
Sorry we have no bilateral agreement with Lusaka over Zedian kings and especially after you opted to resume relations with our number one enemy Israel. You can perhaps ask Tel Aviv for such favors.
