Government has appealed to residents of flood prone areas of Lusaka district to relocate before the onset of the rains.
Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President, Harry Kalaba, made the appeal in Lusaka today during the ‘Wash your hands with soap’ sensitization programme.
Mr Kalaba observed that unplanned settlements are one of the major factors that have hindered government in the delivery of social services to the residents of Lusaka.
He said this has led to residents building houses in quarries that flood during the rainy season and tenants are the most affected.
The Deputy Minister observed that if this campaign is promoted it will drastically reduce the cholera epidemic which affects many compounds in the city.
Mr Kalaba further called on the residents of Lusaka to improve on sanitation, hygienic habits and behavioural change.
Mr Kalaba said government will endeavour to promote good health services to the people through education of the dangers of indiscriminate disposal of waste and garbage.
ZANIS
Lusaka town is very dirty, isnt anyone making an effort to clear the vendors
Relocate to where? Just improve drainage in the areas or build houses on stilts or build canoes or kayaks. Please send swimming instructors there too.
Prinvcess, there are some areas indeed where people need to move away from. The area around Kamwala South for example, people have been digging stones for sale. In the cavities that remain other people build homes, literally in big holes in the ground. They put soil/sand in sacks, put the sacks on top of each other as a foundation, then they build the houses on top of that. Suicidally creative.
Are you dreaming these are the poor Zambians you promised more money in their pockets and if you have not given them the money where do you expect them to get money to build their homes. PF government should first build low cost houses and then relocate these poor people then call in their investors to put up apartment buildings as per their plan when they were in opposition. You are comfortable in your home and you are telling a poor person to relocate to WHERE mwebantu mulelanda namaano
You promised proper drainage system, you said that MMD was doing nothing to help people in flood-prone areas.
I dont see anyone relocating.Â
This is a very silly advice from Government. Is not anyone thinking what it costs to build a new house, acquire a plot to build on and the time it takes to build a house in Zambia?
The Government needs to make sure every respective ministry is working to do its work. We should by now have seen local government very busy fixing roads and drains in partnership with other departments.
Don’t tell people to relocate!
When the President was comgaigning as an oposition, he said the government has a lot of money. Why cant he use that money to improve the drainage systems, some of which were already begun by MMD? The people you are advice cannot build another home, they are pure. Have you people forgotten them, so soon? You are not different.
simply genius from pf!!! see thats what we needed…. why didn’t mmd think of these solutions?
I remember RB being accused of not having built even a single toilet for such people.
Now this time the  message is clear and its audience is  well known.
So uko Kwa misisi , kwa kanyama kwa…. etc  RELOCATE !!!! or go for swimming lessons.
Next time vote wisely !!
It just makes sense : You cant be doing the same thing expecting a different result. That that would be insane.
