Government has suspended the export of maize to all the markets in the region.

Agriculture Minister Emmanuel Chenda says this has been done in order to secure the available stocks in case of a reduction in crop yield in the next harvest.

The minister told ZNBC news that the country may experience a drop in maize production due to the invasion of army worms that have devastated maize fields.

Mr Chenda says all maize export permits which have been suspended will be reviewed next year after a crop market survey is conducted.

He says the revison will help assess whether the country will have produced enough maize for domestic consumption and export.

  1. Useless government that is not proactive. This is why you are CNPs. You gave your cadres the maize as payback for campaigning for you in 2011 to gain forex while Zambians are starving. It is good for Zambian voters who cannot read between the lines that PF went into State House to look the treasury.

  2. INDEED USELESS GOVT YOU FOUND BAMPER HARVEST LEFT BYMMD IMWE NI NSANGWAPO YOU STARTED GIVING CONTRACTS TO PF CADRES TO EXPORT MAIZE.ANYWAY YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY OUT JESUS IS ON OUR SIDE THEREFORE YOU CANNOT WIN.

  3. #1 and 3 who is useless among you and the govt? Surely there is something wrong from you guys. Zambia stocks a deprecaiting because of smuggling and yet you call tyhe govt useless unless you do not understand the concept of supply and demand versus surplus. Possibly those who have studied economics or business are better placed to educate you guys.

  4. good move from the govt,as this will result in an out right increase of maize(mealie meal) on the domestic scene, and as a result will create a balance between supply and demand, with supply slightly outdoing demand, inturn will be able to have a stable or even low retail price of mealie meal.and hence stabilise the CPI(consumer price index) of this product.at the same time cubbing inflation.NOTE..Though on my part as an economist,i would advice the govt next time to use the complete suspending of exporting a product as the last resort.in economoics we go step by step, first increase the export tariffs and duties on that product by a large percentage..this will lead to a reduction in mealing companies exporting to other countries. Then introduce export quotas, this is reducing the amount of exp

  5. exporting a specified product for a certain period of time.the good thing about tariffs and quotas is that the country can increase supply on the domestic level, while at the same time exporting, and getting revenues from the exports…
