Voting in Constituency parliamentary by-elections across the country have been marred with widespread apathy with most voters staying away and continuing with their usual day to day business activities. Some residents talked on why there were not voting there said there tired of voting while others are reportedly busy looking for market to sell their maize in rural constituencies.
Mkushi North has a total of 37,967 registered voters, 51 polling stations and 71 streams. A check at most polling stations after 13:00 hours found widespread voters apathy with the highest number of votes cast recorded at one polling station standing at 70.
In Kafulafuta, at the time the station was being declared open no voters were present. A check at Lupiya polling station at around 6:30 revealed that only 2 people had cast their votes out of the 648 registered voters. And a check again at Chiwala basic at 8:00hrs revealed that out of 1 982 registered voters 111 had cast their votes.
Voting in the Chipata Central Constituency was marred with voter apathy with few electorates turning up to cast their votes in most of the polling stations. A check at polling stations such as , Road Board Offices, Kanjala, Msekera School, Luangwa House and Magazine Market in Kanjala Ward with few numbers of voters turning up. In Msanga Ward’s Clark Cotton Ginnery and Chipata Motel polling stations respectively had a similar situation.
In the Solwezi East by-election voting kicked off on a relatively slow note with a number of polling stations recording a low turn-out at the time of opening at 06:00 hours.
Some Presiding Officers were however optimistic of recording a voter higher turnout as the day progressed saying the challenge of walking long distance to get to the polling stations had contributed to a low turn-out in the morning.
serves them politicians right…
People are tired of voting for garbage, trash and rubbish!
There are more bye elections in September unfortunately. When are these politicians going to work? Fyachilamo
Zambian is slowly becoming an entity that is drowning in its own vomit. There was no reason for all these by-elections if the Govt of the day was mature enough and able to get on with day to day issues that affect people’s lives in the country. This arrogant fraught Govt is bent on trying to turn the country into a single party run govt by claiming cheap shots at the opposition.
Come on people lets go in numbers en vote for PF for more development.
“People are tired of voting and looking for markets to sale their maize”. Speaks volumes and an indication of a nation that is beginning to grief with political machinations.

I and many of my friends dont have time for this political Mouse Crap that has been created. Ends meet are hard to make, so I would rather spend my time at work so that I earn my commission. mxxxxxxm!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who edited this story?
My big question as well! People are not serious!
Good Lesson especially to the PF idiots who are creating these unnecessary bye-elections. Let them campaign, bring money we chew, BUT DON’T VOTE. Nizeee!!!
People do not obviosly see why politicians who care nothing for them are asking then to leave their businesses to vote.ECZ should stop holding by -elections because they have become useless. Why should 70 people out of 40 000 decide who should represent them.I think its illegal.something must be done.If less than 60% of voters show up then the election should be postponed or cancelled.
if zambians wont vote and tired, engage in foreigners like the one in the pic above.
The earth and everyone in it belongs to the Lord Jesus. We all came from one Adam and one Eve. Keep on kicking rocks, cause they the rocks are at the least smarter than your comment.

You are so funny, you’ve cracked my ribs.
They are making money to do the Lord Jesus work of feeding and educating their families. Also money for tith and after what’s the Lord’s is given money fir relaxation to watch KALAMPA KALAMPA KALAMPA!
Sadly apathy or large turnout of voters ….the costs remain the same!!
What kind of writing is this?? Repeating unnecessarily! This story has two functions: firstly, to state that by-elections are marred by voter apathy. Secondly, provide accurate or near accurate figures obtained from polling stations to substantiate the statement. Not this bla bla story taking up space.

When you read some of the contributions on LT, the first thing that comes in my mind is some contribute without using their brains but anger and frustration. Those who are luck to study at higher levels will make understand that critical analysis of both side of the story will help the critic to have a proper understanding of why, what, which and where the author was coming from. For example in Zambia politicians are more concerned with plot 1 rather what they can do to make Zambia a better country. They can go as far as making press conference in a foreign country to cheat the foreign govt that in Zambia there is no freedom of expression but forgetting that the same govts have embassies in Zambia. Such kind of political immature and self centred ness will not take them any way.
Check current election results to know what people are saying
In Zambia opposition political parties do not cherish the ideal values of its people first as they can hire you or sack you. Zambia will only develop once politicians values and principles are towards serving and leading. Today is Sata, tomorrow Sakwiba sikota next HH just to mention a few the same
Will be there. This will pass once anger, frustration, envy and hatred are put aside.
@16 & 17,
I cannot make head or tail out of your comments in relation to the story above.
Zambia has become the only country where bye-elections and swearing in ceremonies are the order of the day. They are the only occasions when the president avails himself to ‘address’ the nation. The people are fed up and cannot be blamed for the apathy. Surely Zambia deserves better.
Advantage for the ruling party.
The opposition should stop chasing away their members to avoid some of these by-elections.
And who ever will amass the most from the small number of votes will be that areas MP, those are the ideals of democracy. So whether 100 or only vote, someone will emerge the victor
Dude, you seriously need to dislodge your head from your arse and start using it for purposes other than greedy asre licking.
Sadly, apathy is one of the many tools that the rulling party uses to stay in power.
When the votes are counted, if the majority are PF, guess what?
PF wins.
The solution to this problem is to have an independent ECZ – Electorial Commish of Zed.

THE STORY IS UNRELIABLE. IT IS NOSENSICAL TO BLAME PF FOR BY ELECTIONS .THE OPO MUST B BLAMED. BRAVO PF !
I bet Bwana Mosali above was exercising his right as a ZAMBIAN by voting, and I assume he voted for Mtolo Phiri, MMD, in Chipata. The wisemen in the East reject violence which saw unprecendented levels in the run up to the elections. Mangani is known for violence, many suffered at his hands in 2011. Congratulations Hon. Mtolo Phiri.
Well done!!
Thank you Zambia. My country will not be intimidated with violence nor sell its soul to the highest bidder! Zambia HAS been saved. We did it in 1991 and we can did it again!!! Abash dictatorship, abash censorship; viva democracy, pamberi with freedom of speech!!! The voice of the people is the voice of God.
