PARAMOUNT Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni Speaking People of Eastern Province has described his critics calling him as a cadre as cowards. Speaking to journalists when he inspected the tarring works on Chipata-Vubwi road in Chipata yesterday, the paramount chief said he was not a cadre but a developmental oriented person who was there to see to it that developmental projects were fostered.

Chief Mpezeni said it was sad that some people with opposite divergent views were calling him as a cadre for the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party.

“Mpezeni is not a cadre of any political party and I am not suppose to be aligned as an affiliate of any political party but I am there to see to it that developmental projects such as Vubwi –Chadiza road is done,” he said.

He said he was a paramount chief who should see to it that various developmental projects were enhanced in various parts. Chief Mpezeni said he wants to leave a good legacy to the people.

“Before I die, I have to make sure that I leave a good legacy and my name cannot be rubbed off. That is why I am focusing on developments,” he said.

The traditional leader however commended President Michael Sata for awarding a contract to China Jiangxi International Company (CJIC) for the upgrading of the Chipata-Vubwi road into bituminous standard.

Chief Mpezeni said the previous republican president failed to upgrade the road into bituminous but President Sata had shown willingness to work on the road within the shortest period of time he had been a Head of State.

“First of all let me thank President Sata for thinking over this road(Chipata-Vubwi road) , I have been a paramount chief and served under the governments of Dr Kenneth Kaunda , Dr Frederick Chiluba, Dr Levy Mwanawasa and Mr Rupiah Banda nothing was done to this road until President Sata thought of it,” he said.

Chief Mpezeni said he would continue thanking the Government of President Sata for seeing to it that the road was done and completed on schedule.

He also commended the construction company for being on site for three weeks saying this was a sign that the road would be completed on time.

And Induna to Paramount Chief who is also Tourism and Arts Permanent Secretary George Zulu said it was disheartening that some people were forgetting that the role of the traditional leader like Paramount Chief was to ensure that developments were facilitated in most of the chiefdoms.

Mr Zulu said the Ngoni paramount chief should be respected in the country because he was the senior most in the country.

“Most of the paramount chiefs are young to Paramount Chief Mpezeni and he is the senior most in the country,” he said.

He said President Sata wanted development adding that most of the projects would be done.

He cited the widening up of the road from Luangwa Bridge to Mwami border including Rural Electrification Authority (REA) as some of the most important developments for rural dwellers.

Mr Zulu said the Chipata-Vubwi road once completed would spur economy development in Vubwi district.

However Company assistant Project Manager Lei Pan pledged to deliver a good road network.

Mr Pan who was accompanied by project manager Lin Ning said the company would ensure that the project was completed on time.

    • I feel sorry for chiefs! I really do. No education, poverty, witchcraft and child abuse is an area of their speciality. You can’t blame him but blame the user of this boy called a chief of the so called ngoni or what ever they call him.

    • Eastern Province comprises many different tribes and many of them have their own traditional structures and pay homage to different chiefs and paramount chiefs for example Kalindawalo, Gawa Undi or Mpezeni. Just because Mpezeni is a compromised Paramount chief, who ashames many Ngoni people does not mean all easterners fall under his juridiction. If anything statistically, the Ngoni’s are in the minority, they found other tribes already settled in the Eastern province.

  5. Well said. But the Chief is missing the point and the reason of why he’s being attacked. Stop being partisan! Your Ngoni subjects belong to diverse groupings and are affiliated to different Parties. Go ahead and inspect the roads and remember that, that’s tax payer’s money from ALL Zambians, not only PF Zambians, that’s why you should be none partisan.

    Sata is not doing you a favor paramount Chief by tarring that road, he’s under obligation to do that, even to areas he has no MPs. That’s his duty, so avoid those praise songs of Sata this ,Sata that. From there let him go to Kafulafuta.

    I have come to realise that there are always two sides to a developmental project. For the momment, it is a burden but in the long run it is an advantage .

    Those that criticise development projects usually have hidden personal interests, mostly political. The others will genuinely support the projects because they understand the economic and social importance for the community.

    Put politics aside and ask yourself which side you belong?

  13. Does not matter who started the project, who sourced the funding and who will finish it. What matters is the fact that politicians shall always work for developing the nation and not lining their pockets and looking for kudos from their Masters. They are paid much more than their Masters (voters).

    Chief Mpezeni is a cadre, shameless cadre for that matter. George Zulu, you are bootlicker of Sata. We know how did you get the job, how you chose to be a PS instead of going for foreign service and how were you stealing from ministry of energy and the brown envelope you were delivered are all noted down in the ministry. Change of government and many will go in.

If this man is a paramount chief we are not supposed to see him by the road side inspecting roads or being paraded at political rally, his junior chiefs should do all that and then report to him. How can he be paramount when there is no one reporting to him. In the context am not so interested in the visiting of the roads by the said CHIEF, but rather the pinnacle of my critic is that of the chief being paraded at a CAMPAGN POLITICAL RALLY during ELECTIONS! It’s against electoral moral conduct considering Mpezeni’s status, you may not agree on his status as P. Chief but that is what he is on official basis.
