Government says it will intensify sensitization campaigns to the public on the importance of preserving forests in the country in order to foster national development.

Tourism, Environmental and Natural Resources Minister, Catherine Namugala, observed that there could be no sustainable development in the country if the natural environment was not protected.

Ms. Namugala said this when she launched the 2008 national tree planting month on the Zambia National Broadcasting Cooperation (ZNBC) in Lusaka today.

The theme for the tree planting period is, “Community participation in tree planting; a key factor in mitigating the effects of climate change for sustainable development”.

She said planting of trees would help reduce global warming, which has been identified as a factor behind climate change, adding that global warming was now a reality that could no longer be denied.

Ms. Namugala warned that if the current use of fossil fuel continued, it might result in further environmental degradation which will have serious environmental consequences.

She said environmental degradation would decrease economic activities especially for the rural population.

She said government has so far put in place intervention measures through the forest reforms, adding that citizens should complement such efforts by planting more trees in their areas.

Ms. Namugala has since called upon the media to help intensify sensitization campaign and ensure citizens were educated on the importance of forests to the environment.

  8. Namugala is saying the truth looking at the rate our environment is going down. We need to do something esp with the charcoal burners. But what can we do with this load shedding. I see a lot of people buying charcoal when coming from the countryside.

  9. Norah ,you are right. If you look @ ndola-mufulira rd,enviroment is changing due heavy charcoal burning and i wonder if there restrictions at all!now due to poverty and load shedding, its difficult to adher to some of these issues.

  15. After reading some meaningless and unconstructive comments on this thread, I can’t help but to switch off my computer and go outside for a long, long, long walk in the snow…:-\”

  16. Our govt needs to regulate the mining companies so that they do not dump toxic waste in the rivers, and pump it into the environment!

Talk is cheap minister, regulate the polluters and then we will see how serious you are about saving the environment!!

  17. NAMUGALA. THE QUESTION IS, WHICH TREES ARE YOU PLANTING? INDIGENOUS OR EXOTIC (IMPORTED-EUCALYPTUS, ETC)? ZAMBIA IS ENDOWED WITH A VARIETY OF TREES BUT ITS A PITY HOW THE GOVT CANNOT IMPLEMENT POLICIES TO REGULATE TREE FELLING. TWO YEARS AGO WHEN I VISITED ZAMBIA IT WAS A SORRY SIGHT TO SEE HOW BARE THE LAND HAS BECOME BETWEEN LUSAKA AND THE COPPERBELT. THERE IS EXTENSIVE TREE-FELLING FOR CHARCOAL BURNING. ONE WONDERS WHY COAL WHICH IS IN ABUNDANCE IN ZAMBIA CANNOT BE USED IN DOMESTIC HOMES AS IT IS USED IN BOTSWANA, NAMIBIA AND SOUTH AFRICA. MINISTER DONT JUST YAP FOR THE SAKE FULL FILLING YOUR TIME-SHEET.

  18. Zambians be constructive. Not abusive. How can we contribute to important issues if all we want to say on an important topic is comment on someone’s appearance or her low education? This person has nothing to lose(Namugala). She has reached a level in life where probably you and me will never reach. Respect boys and girls! Any how, thanks to this freedom of expression and the internet. Best Wishes to you all.
