A man of Sandwe village in chief Malama’s area in Mambwe District in Eastern Province has died while another has been badly injured after being attacked by an elephant.
Both Mambwe District Commissioner John Chilowa and Zambia Wildlife Authority Regional Manager (ZAWA) Mathews Mushimbalume confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Mambwe today.
Mr. Chilowa disclosed that both Benjamin Phiri, the deceased, and Fanwell Zulu of Kapepa village were attacked at Chileka village in the early hours of yesterday.
He said Zulu was nursing wounds at Kamoto Mission Hospital.
Mr. Chilowa said the two were on their way to Sandwe village in chief Malama’s area as they were coming from Senior Chief Nsefu’s area when they were attacked by the elephat.
And Zambia Wildlife Authority Regional Manager (ZAWA) Mathews Mushimbalume said the incident happened within a Game Management Area (GMA).
He said ZAWA officers had not yet found the elephant that attacked the two but stated that they were still trying to track it.
Cases of human-animal conflict in the area are a source of concern among residents in Mambwe district.

That is really sad esp. 48 hrs to 2009
RIP my eastern bro:((:((
LT,
I tried to email LT on ‘contact us’ link but box is full…who ever deleted my entries-
Why were my comments deleted today? i was the 1st to comment on 3 articles as “numero uno baby” but they were deleted. I searched old entries and other people’s comments as first were not deleted. I deem such actions as discriminatory where as such were not deleted e.g

Zimandola one I didnt mean to put u on the spot but I had to use your entry as example
May Benjamin Phiri’s, the deceased’s, Soul rest in peace and condolences to the bereaved family of the man and his friends.
As of Fanwell Zulu of Kapepa village, I wish him a quick recovery.
Sad news indeed for mother Zambia. #-o.
#3 LSktimes is deleting comments saying you are number one or replacing them because the webmaster seems to have an issue with it. It was done to me 4 times. I think the wbmaster should concentrate on improving grammar and spellings instead of spending time on trivial issues. Instead of plagiarising stories you might want to appoint some freelance journalists to give unique stories.
Anyway am nambala 6 so there
sad news indeed. animals seem to have become more important than human beings. ZAWA should track the beast and elliminate it before more lives are lost :(8-|:o
OF COURSE THE MAN WAS IN SEARCH OF FOOD FOR HIS FAMILIES. SAD STORY.
Anaimals are JUST as important as humans.
We are all equals!!
Do not kill the animal just because it protected ITSELF or TERRITORY.
This mentality is what is killing off all creatures in Africa, and the world.
#3 sorry to say but am sure glad LT deleted your comments. I find such comments a little childish and am sure u have far better things to do than hanging on the site for new posts so u can be first to comment. Does it matter really if u’re first or last?
THUMBS UP LT! Save your your database for informative contributions that make LT more interesting
can’t help but feel sad. :(:(
This is sad reading…
5. dobo banton(9TH).LLB Its true. Pliz LT, dont give us plagiarised stories from ZANIS. have your own. and where are you located, need to drop a legal suit!
I have been looking for Lady Chiza’s Legs for two days now.Where were you? You missed a lot. Welcome baby girl!(#13)
On a lighter and festive note guys, visit deejaywolf dot blogspot dot com
You will be happy you did. :-\”
The animals are reacting to human aggression. Though they may have targeted wrong people. May souls of the departed rest in peace including those in Gaza.
poor him 😮
**==**==**== I thought there restrictions to pass trough game parks without permit, how is it like pipo? sad nws indeed jst 2days b4 2009!!!
Really sad indeed! Let Nyama Soya also be very careful as he tours Luangwa National Park.
These are normal risks of living in game management areas. Unfortunately there is no solution to these difficulties. Killing of the so called wrong elephants has not helped. In any case its usually the innocent elephants that are killed to appease the villagers with free meat. Sadly too people in Mambwe area like walking about in these risky places where elephants and lions roam at will.
😕 😕
The elephant felt threatened and did what it did in self defence, an animal instinct.
#5 grow up. i think lt is doing a great job deleting those worthless comments. we dont want to plough through your rubbish to get to what intelligent people have to say. Lisa i cant believe you are complaining about trivial matters.go compete in channel you competitive energy where it would be appreciated.
lady chiza’s legs. if you take time to look at the ‘about us’ section you will see that lt clearly states that the articles come from the leading news sources in zambia and around the world. that, technically speaking, is not plagiarism.:)>-
#23 so useless comments are ones saying number one. What about more damaging comments like tribalism and incitement. Tell me what harm would someone saying number do compared to armchair pundits that incite tribal and political hatred? It is a free world and if you don’t like comments on this blog I suggest you use your eyelids and neck muscles to turn away.
Its such sad news. unfortunately this is just one of the many cases.amen # 9.killing the animals is not the solution.
RB’s choppers must have disturbed/upset the elephants before they attacked the villager. If only RB was in the way of the beasts to have borne their brunt, LOL.
Thank God it’s not Rb.We still need the bro.
THAT ELEPHANT SHUD BE SENTENCED TO DEATH WHILE RB SHUT TRY TO HELP THE FAMILY OF THIS YOUNG MAN!
MHSRP. Guys stop poaching in GMA, otherwise 8-x :((
baiche imwe #3, #5, #6. why do fight about being #1. kapoli. lets comment meaningfully. this elephant shoud be sentenced to death.
Suppose it was your father. mulentontonkanya.
“He said ZAWA officers had not yet found the elephant that attacked the two but stated that they were still trying to track it.”
And if they find it, are they insinuating that they will arrest and charge it for the offence of murder or manslaughter?:-?:-?
Human and wild animals will never stay next to each other, RIP :((
Eastern Province again, sorry [-x
#10 Shimpundu, I fully agree with Lisa. There’s no reason for LT to delete anyone’s “first” comment. We should not limit another’s freedom, just because we don’t like what they say. It is not proper.
LT should define what is a “good, allowed comment.” Doing so might however have a negative effect, being that one might not comment from fear of not saying what he should say. And that would result into biased comments. We would filter information, therefore we might miss out on usefull comments we didn’t consider to be usefull in the first place. Although i agree with your sentiment towards the useless “numero one” comment, one might in such a case, just ignore them & move on.
Yes i’m also amused by the absurd comment of “numero uno” or “nambala one”. It’s a double feeling of being amused, and recognising it as being useless. Most people only mean that in a jocular way. It is harmless in any case. There is a lot of other insane stuff going on here and all of us have been “guilty” of degrees of it – sexual discrimination, defamation, impersonating, slander, insulting leaders etc. the list is endless. This is the stuff LT should be worried about.
My condolences to the bereaved family, MHSRIP. Zawa please help so that in future we minimise such incidents, we need to be able to enjoy our blessings.
May the soul of my poor Mbuya rest in peace.(Ba Bwezani, be careful with the elephants there, we don’t want to have by-elections).
Much as Zawa is a govt body that is supposed to promote tourism to earn us the much needed foreign currency, I feel doing so at the expense of human life does not make sense. Yeah, the elephant could have felt threatened, but many are the times that Zawa has condemned human victims of animal/human conflict. Zawa needs to reset their priorities as human life oi more important that animal life.
Elephants rarely attack people. When they do, normally it is revenge for an elephant family member that was killed by humans (Elephants have remarkable memory) or humans encrouching too deep into the Elephants domain.
Maenstro, I read your last weeks’coment(when you were having a squabble with Chewe) You had a point quite alright, but you had exacerbated it by aluded to the fact that I may have a challenge in English language. That is immaterial, to say the the least.
Lastly, I want to download somenthing to you: You should reduce on your level of pomposity.
#41
Exactly! To add on, not only elephants do have memory, they also do have emotions unlike other animals. They do mourn their departed ones no matter the cause of death. But human aggression is the major cause.
:d:”>:((:d/:x/:):o:-?:-\”:-w
#41 Have you studied all elephants or are you just quoting an opinion that is not fact . Elephants have psycho’s and murderers as well
w w w-dot-ellenwhiteexposed-dot-com/chrono.htm
why would people not just comment on the issue or the topic than trying to anounce being numero what unless we say too many teenagers trying to discuss grownup issues.
castration is needed
Ba LT, Sandwe Village is in Chief Sandwe’s area in Petauke District, and not in Chief Malama’s in Mambwe District. Tell ZANIS to give you correct information, or better still verify it, before you publish it. This is a small issue in this particular case, but you should get the principle and procedure right before you mess up big time on a major story
“Mr. Chilowa said the two were on their way to Sandwe village in chief Malama’s area as they were coming from Senior Chief Nsefu’s area when they were attacked by the elephat. ”
LT – more editorial effort please. This is an excellent site, no need to devalue it by letting standards slip on simple matters such as spelling. It is happening far too often.
I wish there was something that could have been done to save that life R.I.P
ohh… sad to hear,but its tym i guess.. 🙁
I’m no longer positive the place you’re getting your info, however great
topic. I must spend a while studying much more or figuring out more.
Thanks for great info I used to be looking for this information for my mission.
