Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has ruled out any meeting with President Michael Sata to discuss national matters. Speaking when he featured on Hot FM yesterday, Mr. Hichilema said that he would not meet President Micheal Sata to discuss national matters.
“I would not meet Mr Sata to dialogue with him national issues or peace in the nation because I know that he can call for my arrest before we finish the meeting as I can tell him the truth that might injure his feelings,”.
“The best I can do if I want to dialogue with him is to write to him and not meeting him in person, never, I have been writing to him and responses have been given, I shall continue doing that meeting him will lead to my arrest,” said Mr Hakainde.
During the radio interview, Mr. Hichilema blamed the PF government policies for the failing Kwacha that has hit its lowest value, adding that there was nothing global about the free falling Kwacha.
Mr. Hichilema said he predicted a long time ago that investor confidence will be lost and the Kwacha would lose value by implementation of statutory instruments number 33 and 55 that imposed restrictions on local currency.
“I have been vindicated once again and there is nothing global about the bleeding Kwacha. It is simply the PF failure to understand serious economic fundamentals that are making the Kwacha lose value at fast rate,” Mr. Hichilema said.
He said the PF should for now suspend the statutory instruments that heavily regulate the Kwacha for the sake of mother Zambia and the business community in the country that create jobs.
Mr. Hichilema called on the PF government to be consistent with certain statements and actions as they can easily affect investor confidence.
“For example, when you promise to deliver a people driven constitution and later someone turns around like Mr. Sata and Guy Scott are doing by saying this is just a piece of paper, such statements scare away investors because they fear you have no regard for the rule of law. Investors fear you will one day just wake up and make decrees that will make them lose their money, ” he said.
When you wake up and deport the Chilanga cement Managing Director like the PF did without following the law, investors get scared and there is nothing global about such lawlessness hence the Kwacha rapid depreciation,” he said.
Mr. Hichilema said even actions such as arresting and denying opposition leaders and other people certain liberties that are enshrined in the constitution can cause economical and political instability that weakens the Kwacha.

Any I have already given advice to Sata and Chikwanda on what needs to happen first to stabilise the Kwacha. Its simple. Sata should stop abusing POA and restore all freedoms as enjoyed in MMD era.

I listened to the interview. There was a lot of sense that he spoke and I cant believe that a journalist can only pick the aspect of him refusing to meet president Sata over other important issues. For example, he categorically said that his position on homosexuality is that it is outside the Zambian culture and will not be embraced
Now we have a situation where the Minister of Finance is addressing the nation, when the president is around. What is the meaning of this if not an indication that the head knows nothing on the topic of the moment, which is the negative economic outlook of Zambia. The odd thing is that, tomorrow will be saying the exact opposite of what Chikwanda will be addressing the nation on. Surely it will be difficult to attract investors if this trends remains as it is. PF should learn to listen to other stakeholders than plunge the country into an awkward situation. I agree that we made a mistake to vote for PF. We have learnt hash lesson to some of us who voted for PF. We are now ruled via Facebook and SMS. It’s not too late yet. Let the government engage a capable FM and Bank Governor and engage other stakeholders. They will carry the day by around 40% against HH’s 36% – remember the new constitution(which will be enacted end of 2015 early 2016) will NOT have the 50%+1 clause. He definitely will cry foul – he will say the Elections have been rigged and stolen from him. The question is, since he is no longer an underfive politician, what will he do???

However, for the intercourse between corporate leadership and economic development to beneficial to a country, there is need for leaders with tested technical competency able to understand the importance of finance, the elements of a financial system, property rights, and competition in national economic development.
This is where when one looks at the current opposition leaders offering themselves to lead Zambia in 2016; HH seems to have the appropriate technical competency that can link corporate governance to other foundations of development and set sail the country to national economic development.

Well spoken HH. Issue based as usual. There is no doubt to any well meaning Zambian that when it comes to matters of stimulating businesses, (i.e. reviving our economy) and instilling investor confidence, HH is one of the few credible politicians who is qualified in the field and talks from experience. He has earned accolades and respect from many credible international organisations, and as such he has the leverage to sit down with them and talk on the same wavelength and cause them to invest in our Country. As for President Sata, the only contact he has with the outside World is Mugabe, and that speaks volumes why our Kwacha is headed the Zim Dollar way. There is a saying “If you run around with losers, you will become a loser. Run with winners, you will become a winner.” Simple.
In this context the loser is Sata. Mugabe is worse off running around with an absolute incompetent than the other way round.
But why should Sata bother having a meeting with an Underfive who has a massaged ego, and is always a distant third in elections despite always claiming to be popular. I would rather Sata has a meeting with Rupiah Banda or even Nevers Mumba because they have got government experience. In UPND I would rather Sata has a meeting with Nkombo at least he has experience as MP or the recently elected UPND councillor in Mvula ward in Chililabombwe, at least he has served as ward councillor after being elected by the people. What meeting can Sata surely have with one whose popularity has been in free-fall like the Kwacha in the last three elections. Hichilema had 25% in 2006, 19% in 2008 and then 18% in 2011. During that period the gap between him and Sata was first 110,000 votes, then 300, 000 votes and 750,000 votes. Even if HH claims to have gained popularity is it surely enough to even halve the over 750,000 votes gap in 2011. People let us be realistic and advice HH to measure himself at his true worth and reach out to people. Writing in his favour on social sites will only mislead him thinking he is popular when it’s only about 5% of the population who have access to Internet and they all don’t support him. Even on Watchdog comments that are anti-HH are either deleted on withheld from publication

Events in Zambia have outworked themselves in such a way that today every Zambian is aware who is the likely next president in waiting. I hope we will not become naive and be duped for an unschooled thuggish looking chap that he/she will mend the economy in 90 days.

The UPND lost all those seats in the 2011 election. Infact his MPs even if they lost they got better results than him in all those seats. What you should take into consideration is that the votes for an MP and President in the same constituency are different. For instance Sata managed to get better results than most of his MPs in 2011. Likewise most UPND MPs defeated HH in several constituencies except for a few seats in Southern Province

I would rather Sata holds a meeting with the Newly elected UPND councillor for Mvula ward in Chililabombwe. Atleast he has won in an area HH has never won and will never win at presidential level. In the past two years most currencies have depreciated against the dollar. In fact in the last two years the powerful rand has depreciated 38 %, the Ghanian Cedi 86%, the Kwacha 12%, Nigerian Naira 8% and Australian dollar about 6%. This is because the slowing growth in China which is the main important goods. Also the currencies could be depreciating because of the happenings in the United States. China and America are too big countries and whatever happens there has potential to impact the rest of the world. Zambians lets learn to work together to resolve problems rather being cynics like HH
