ZACA disappointed over reduced duty on beer

Share

The Zambia Consumers Association, ZACA, is disappointed with the move by government to reduce customs duty on on clear beer at the expense of imported food items.

The consumer body expected government to reduce duty on imported flour and other food items in this year’s national budget.

ZACA Executive Director, Muyunda Ililonga, said the reduction of exercise duty on clear beer will increase alcohol abuse among the youth.

Mr Muyunda expressed hope that government will come up with a deliberate measure to bar young people from indulging in excessive beer drinking in view of the expected reduction in the price of the commodity.

He said the move to reduce the cost of beer is counter productive especially in a country that is striving to promote economic growth and alleviate poverty.

Meanwhile, a check by ZANIS at COMEA market found that traders have not effected reduction on the price of beer following the announcement by government to reduce customs duty on imported commodity.

One of the traders, Emmanuel Mukalele, told ZANIS that the price of clear beer on the market might not reduce significantly despite the reduction on customs duty due to the continued depreciation of the Kwacha.

  1. I think the only policy that would reduce alcohol abuse by the youth is to hold the bar owner or the liquor trader liable.

They should implement a policy stating, “any trader found selling alcohol to any person under the age of 18 years will be required to pay a fine of K1.5 million. I they cannot pay the fine, they will face imprisonment for at least 6 months”.

I assure you, the sale of alcohol to underage drinkers will reduce.

  2. Beer is just a social drink that brings people together it only becomes dangerous if someones behavior starts being controlled by it,so this reduction is a right step in the right direction, amangalo yafula in terms of social health

  3. More binge drinkers , more bad sexual decisions, family breakdown, more road accidents, more liver disease sufferers, more families going to bed without their supper because the bread winner ‘drank’ all the money, more chibuku warriors headbutting brickwalls while on auto pilot………….what a smart government we have. Soon beer will be cheaper than water

  4. 6. Slumdog-Shalapungu

All those things you have mentioned have nothing to do with a reduction of tax on beer!!

    [-x[-x

Either you are a man and you have brains and a backbone or you are trash and will never change!! Reducing tax on beers will not make all men better men!! Come on !!! Self control is not a question of how high a certain tax is ? Either you are or you are not.

  5. There it goes again, the promotion of the drinking culture that has seen an increase ‘SWOLLEN TUMMIES, BLOOD PRESSURE/DIABETES..etc. The booze culture in Zambia is somehow more predominant than the sports culture that happens to be close to zero. Alcohol abuse, mostly by broke people that do not even have enough food at home is rampant. The reduction of alcohol is relatively good news for the people that need to kind of chill-out after graft as oppossed to ‘chongololos’ and mini-tasintas that have no jobs/money to spend but hung around beer places/pub etc. just get drunk layed. While reducing alcohol is okay, creating jobs so that broke arse m’…fs can enjoy the hard earned cash is critical:-?

  6. What is this consumers association? What consumers’ interests do they protect? :-??:-??
Basing on what has been witten in the article, this association must be a laughing stock :-j:-j

  7. Depreciation of Kwacha and credit crunch are very related..
Govt must prioritise issues in here. How can beer subsidy be better than food subsidy?

    just speculating :-?:-w

  8. Those guys the want to see Zed falling down as they don´t care what is happing in the country? Vote wise next time.

  9. Quote:Great are those men who take beer as a leasure but not as an intoxinating substance and great are those men who after men rounds of beer still remain men and are able to make sound dicisions :)>-

  11. On a serious note: Alcohol is abused by both youths and elders. Customs duty or no customs duty is not the issue. ATTITUDE and self control is needed. The state should control beer consumption like in some of the countries we know. Expensive or cheap Zambians will still drink…. 😮

  18. Zambian Breweries pays alot of tax to GRZ and faced alot of competition from smuggled cheap stuff and this was affecting its sales budget as pipo resorted to cheap imported stuff. This will encourage a majoza to consume local staff and contribute to our national coffers to enable those in GRZ abuse tax payers grudars. Beer is not bad but those who take it in excess and of coz there will be alot of accidents begining this weekend.Zambian Breweries is a very important industry. After a days hard work one needs to chart with friends. Ba Yililongalonga I wonder if you made submisssion before budget presentation, wake up be proactive.ZB did its homework

  20. How many people are in this Zambia Consumers Association, ZACA coz I only hear/see one man Muyunda Ililonga. Im not saying its bad, just want to know the composition. It looks like its a one man show. No wonder its got no teeth to bite coz this man Muyunda Ililonga wants to eat donor funded money alone.

  21. hey zambian!reducing tax on clear beer wont make any gradual change in someones expenditures,as longer as there is no money in the pockects, for the Gvt has instead increased tax on other food.

  22. Long Live NS ! Umwana uwangalila ku bwalywa te mwana musuma ! Awe babomba ba NS uno mwaka.

  23. Let us go the Botswana way where all bars, night clubs and pubs close at 19.30 hours mon to sat. They open at 10.30 hours. On Sundays no alcohol is allowed to be sold, not even in the Hotel restaurants and vending machines….

  24. There was a club in Lusaka, something like Mr C if am not mistaken. Their motto was ‘WE ARE OPEN 8 DAYS A WEEK’. Machakolwa…..

  25. I may be out of tune here, but can someone tell me if this ZACA is a one-man Association? Its always Ililonga this, Ililonga that! Who are the other members? Just curious.

  26. Ba Kamina misa mwatemwa sana. I pity those that drink their heads off. This will see a reduction of young women going to ante natal clinics and UTH Drs and other hospitals will see an increase in malnurished children. As various Political party cadres, its time for u to discard Shake Shake ask ma Bosses for lagers only. For my grand mum in Misisi loss of Kachasu business. For our night jars its big big Business. For my friend who invested his pension in a bar, I say kip it up. As my lady cousin more clients and share with them your HIV status. Congrats Zambian Breweries Plc. Comesa traders to hell with your smuggled Beer.

  27. I drink but nimpapa sana. May be MMD have dicovered that when people get drunk like their cadres they will forget about complaining and opposing them?

  28. Good for drinkers and bar owners, they could have reduced tax on other commodities though!
