MINISTER of Community Development, Mother and Child Health Emerine Kabanshi has called for door to door HIV/AIDS testing as nine out of 10 Zambians do not test at designated places for various reasons.
Speaking during the launch of the HIV testing week in Lusaka yesterday, Ms Kabanshi noted that HIV testing remains low and that “mobile door-to-door testing should be an answer to this problem”.
“While nine out 10 women and men know where to get tested, only 35 percent women and 20 percent men have been tested,” Ms Kabanshi said
And National AIDS Council Director General Jabblin Mulwanda said World AIDS Day is still important 30 years after the epidemic emerged.
There’s a more practical and less intrusive way to do this – simply test all patients who come to hospital for HIV. That way, stats are collected (and donors can check off another item off their list) and the patient is treated for the correct disease.
The blood test should not just end at malaria, they should check for everything, pregnancy, malaria, HIV, syphilis, sugar levels, etc.

These useless and dull ministers who don’t understand a thing about hiv/aids. Such proposals and thinking are the reason why hiv patients are stigmatised. Too much attention is given to hiv.

Door to door is too drastic. It is better to test any patient seeking blood related treatment. Just make it a condition for everyone in need of treatment at a health institution. Humans must be free to live and die indignity.
Accepting one’s HIV status especially those that test positive is not a few minutes’ counseling depending an individual. Does the ministry have money for follow up services? Dont just make pronouncements that will worsen the situation.

Celibacy is a good option. I have enjoyed it since 1993 approx. I am clean and wholesome. Apart from a bit of anxiety (too much mental monitoring), I am fit and healthy.

HIV testing is VOLUNTARY, you don’t have to follow people in their homes, people go for a test when they feel that they are at risk…..

If you read between the lines, the minister has her eyes beyond the ‘testing’….. her eyes are on donor’s wallet…
Read the Tanzanian woman incident on Tumfweko today. All positive tested people may do the same so that all are infected to stop stigmatisation. This may remove fear from people who do not know their status and would start to revenge others would commit suicide after raping some people. By the way how many countries have done this? Kabanshi’s decisions must be checked. They are too dangerous. Has she got the cure to treat and eliminate the disease? First find the cure, then test all and finally treat to eliminate the disease. Door-to-Door has a chance of higher stigma. Getting data from patients visiting hospital is better though it would reduce patient numbers. Sensitisation is the way so that people act from a point of knowledge.

Stigmatization should not be exhibited by our leaders, this is pure stigma from a useless MP

You will alienate people by going this route. People have the right to refuse to be tested and even though its not good its still a right. This is taking away their rights which will further cause people to hide their status. Education is the key here and people coming up with such methods need to be further educated about stigma and they themselves should take the tests in front of people saying its ok and safe to do it. Instead of helping fight AIDS?HIV this method will do the opposite. Not knowing in how to deal with the disease is the problem and not the disease its self. Start off in schools, markets, communities, drop off centers etc. If politicians themselves don’t come out due to stigma, then how about a regular person come out.
