Government vows to stop illegal mining in Mkushi

0

Government has reaffirmed its commitment to curbing illegal mining activities in Mkushi District, Central Province.

Mkushi District Commissioner, Jonathan Kapungwe said this during a stakeholder forum convened to address reports of illegal mining in the gazetted North Swaka Forest Reserve.

Mr Kapungwe emphasised that while the government recognises mining as a key economic activity, it will not tolerate practices that threaten the environment.

He said his office has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards anyone engaging in illegal mining or other unlawful activities in forest reserves.

“The North Swaka and Mkushi Headwaters Forests are vital to sustaining Mkushi’s agricultural productivity, especially in crops such as wheat, maize, tomatoes, and soybeans,” he said.

Mr Kapungwe added that the district administration will work with relevant agencies to implement long-term measures to protect natural resources.

Meanwhile, Mimosa Mining Company Corporate Affairs Manager Ian Banda attributed the rise in illegal mining to recent encroachments in the North Swaka Forest.

Dr Banda noted that the illegal activities not only damage the environment but also disrupt operations of licensed mining companies such as Mimosa.

“It is imperative that illegal mining is stopped before it escalates further,” Dr. Banda said.

And Mkushi Small-Scale Miners Association spokesperson Lloyd Nyirenda has proposed the formation of a multi-sectoral committee to coordinate mining licensing between the Regional Mining Bureau and local operators.

Mr Nyirenda said the initiative would help raise awareness among small-scale miners on the benefits of operating legally.

Vice President, Mutale Nalumango has been honoured by Makanday, a Centre for Investigative Journalism and an independent, non-profit media for her steadfastness in championing investigative journalism and press freedom in Zambia.

Makanday Board Chairman, Ackson Kanduza presented the prestigious medal award to the Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu who received the award on behalf of the Vice President.

She heartily welcomed and commended Makanday for the award.

Mrs Nalumango says a vibrant media is the lifeblood of democracy to provide the citizens with accurate information and empower them to make informed decisions, particularly as the nation undergoes economic transformation and prepares to hold the 2026 general elections.

She says the government remains steadfast in safeguarding press freedom in ensuring that journalists work without intimidation, censorship and undue influence.

Mrs Nalumango reaffirmed government’s dedication to build a free and independent press and that it remains fully committed to promoting investigative journalism in Zambia.

She said the enactment of the Access to Information Law must be used by journalists carefully without scandalizing innocent individuals, corporate bodies as well as the State.

The Veep said this in Lusaka last evening during the 4th Makanday media awards.

This was in a speech ready for her by Water and Sanitation Minister Collins Nzovu.

Mrs Nalumango said the ATI Bill would ensure that investigative journalists have a credible basis for launching investigation cases.

“Journalists in the country will first access factual information and based on it, launch investigations into what appears suspicious.

This means they will not publish falsehoods or scandalise innocent people, public officials or public institutions, because the ATB is at their disposal,” she added.

She commended Makanday for its commitment to promote excellence in investigative journalism.

The Veep also presented medals to the three deserving recipients.

On awards, she acknowledged that they are outstanding and serve in nurturing culture, accountability, transparency, and truth-seeking values in line with the country’s democracy.

She reminded media personnel in the country that investigative journalism is not only about individual’s achievement but helps shape a transparent, accountable, and just Zambia.

Sandra Kunda from Catholic Media Network, a Catholic Radio Station scooped the first prize and won a laptop while Zambia Daily Mail’s Banda Mazombwe and Clara Chisenga of Radio Chengelo got the second and third prizes respectively.

The duo got 100 percent full sponsorship for a disclosed period of time from Makanday management.

And Makanday board Chairman Ackson Kundaza commended the government for enacting the Access to Information law.

Professor Kundaza challenged journalists to be dedicated to duty and service.

He said the freedom of expression is not just for Journalists alone but it should build consensus and benefit the people at large.

He called for ethics and professionalism among journalists and warned them to guard against ‘fake news’ that has the potential to cause division in the country and region.

Passing a vote of thanks, Makanday Managing Partner, John Mukela said Vice President Mutale Nalumango has continued to exhibit ‘true leadership rooted in faith, humility, and service that continues to motivate members of the public to use journalism as a force for truth and justice.

Mr Mukela further commended the partners and funders, the National Endowment for Democracy and BBC Media Action for their unwavering support.

“You’ve stood with us through our growth and challenges, and your belief in our mission strengthens our resolve to keep journalism alive, vibrant, and fearless,” he said.

He reminded the journalists in the country to be courageous, disciplined in pursuant to truth embodied in the spirit of hard work as they hold power to account and give voice to the voiceless.

Government achieves major economic milestone in Western Province

5

Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Elias Mubanga says Government has recorded a milestone in its drive towards economic transformation following the commissioning of the K10.8 million Senanga Aquaculture expansion project in Western province.

The project, spearheaded by the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) in partnership with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, is part of the Government’s broader agenda to promote food security, job creation, and an inclusive economic growth under the 8th National Development Plan.

Mr Mubanga said this during the commissioning ceremony of the 26 floating fish cages placed across the Zambezi River in the locality, adding that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering rural communities through sustainable enterprise development.

“This project is more than just fish farming, it is about empowerment, employment, and economic transformation for the people of Western Province. It speaks directly to President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for increased aquaculture production to reduce the national fish depletion and create opportunities for women and youth,” Minister Mubanga said.

During the launch, 26 floating fish cages were officially commissioned on the Zambezi River, and over 42,000 fish fingerlings were stocked, marking the first production cycle under the project.

Mr Mubanga said the Senanga Aquaculture project includes 56 floating cages in total, a modern hatchery capable of producing one million fingerlings annually, a 10-ton cold room, and a 5-ton refrigerated truck to support storage and transportation.

The Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise said the project is expected to produce over 300 metric tonnes of fish per production cycle, creating over 800 direct and indirect jobs for the local population in the province.

And Western Province Minister, Kapelwa Mbangweta has praised the CEEC and the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock for supporting Senanga’s economic growth, noting that the investment demonstrates the government’s resolve to unlock the province’s economic potential.

“This is a model of community-based empowerment that improves livelihoods and stimulates local enterprise. Western Province is ready to lead in aquaculture and value addition,” Mr Mbangweta said.

Mr Mbangweta has however, thanked the Barotse Royal Establishment for working with the government for spearheading the much-needed development in the province. This harmony and unity between the traditional leadership and the government will foster development that the people in the province are yearning for from this government.

CEEC Director General, Dr Muwe Mungule, said the Commission’s empowerment model ensures that cooperatives receive not only infrastructure but also business and technical training for long-term sustainability.

“We are promoting inclusive entrepreneurship by enabling local cooperatives to participate fully in the fish value chain. This is how real empowerment takes root,” Dr Mungule said.

Meanwhile, the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) Ngambela Manyando Mukela who was represented by Induna Meimanene Patrick Iluba expressed gratitude to the government and its partners for investing in Senanga, saying the initiative aligns with the traditional authority’s efforts to promote development while safeguarding natural resources.

Ngambela Mukela expressed gratitude that the project will also introduce value addition and cold chain systems, reducing post-harvest losses and allowing farmers to access wider markets.

The traditionalist added that the collaboration between the BRE and government will transform the province in the promotion of tourism and trade within the region and beyond.

One of the four cooperatives representatives from Kucahakufeli cooperative, Masheke Nalukui said has lauded CEEC for supporting the cooperatives with skills and knowledge on how to engage in fish farming ventures in the district.

Ms Nalukui said the four cooperatives will endeavor to work closely together so that their dreams of uplifting their living standards through fish farming is achieved in the district.

“As you are aware, our various fish species in many of our rivers in the province have been depleted due to poor fishing methods, so the introduction of fish cages farming will tremendously improve our lives. From this launch today, in the next six months we will start realizing our fruits gained from CEEC, our income generating activities through fish will be enhanced,” Ms Nalukui said.

The Senanga model will be replicated in other districts across Western Province as part of the Government’s strategy to make aquaculture a driver of rural development and economic diversification.

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency shuts down zinc oxide plant in Kabwe

1

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has shut down operations at Dashun Industry Company Limited, a Zinc-Oxide Smelting Plant in Kabwe, for persistently not complying with environmental regulations.

A Plant Supervisor, identified as Cao Honjian, has since been arrested in connection with the same.

The company is alleged to have been unlawfully discharging Zinc Oxide into the open environment.

According to a statement issued to ZANIS by ZEMA Corporate Affairs Manager, Ruth Kamwi, the unlawful discharge of Zinc Oxide into the open environment prompted the agency to issue a Compliance Order on 27th October 2023, directing the company to suspend operations and comply with Decision Letter requirements.

The company, however failed to comply, resulting in ZEMA serving a Notice of Intention to cancel the Decision Letter on 15th May 2025, giving the firm 30 days to implement corrective measures.

Despite this, the firm still remained non-compliant, leading to the cancelation of the Decision Letter by ZEMA, on 1st October 2025.

ZEMA also directed the company to cease operations and surrender all operational licenses by 23rd October 2025.

However, a follow-up inspection on 1st November 2025, revealed that the company had defied the directive and continued operations, thereby instigating the arrest of the Plant Supervisor, Cao Honjian.

Ms Kamwi has stressed that environmental compliance is mandatory and non-negotiable, further warning that the ZEMA will not hesitate to take stern regulatory action, including prosecution, against violators.

Government has completed the full disbursement of the 2025 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocations to all the 156 constituencies in Zambia.

Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Administration, Gabriel Pollen revealed that the final tranche of K717.3 million has been released by the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

Dr Pollen, who was speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, said the disbursement marks the full funding of the 2025 CDF allocation.

“The Ministry of Finance has released the final K717.3 million to our ministry, bringing the total disbursement for this year to K5.6 billion. This represents 100 percent funding of the 2025 CDF budget,” he revealed.

Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority approve injectable ARV for HIV prevention

0

The Ministry of Health has announced that the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) has registered a long-acting injectable antiretroviral (ARV) for HIV prevention, known as Lenacapavir (LEN), to mark a major milestone in Zambia’s fight against HIV.

Minister of Health, Elijah Muchima, announced in Lusaka that the approval of Lenacapavir reaffirms government’s commitment to ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030, through the introduction of innovative and highly effective prevention technologies.

In a statement issued by Ministry of Health Principle Public Relations Officer, Georgia Chimombo, Dr Muchima explained that Lenacapavir is administered once every six months and provides protection from HIV infection for the same duration.

He noted that this milestone builds upon the earlier introduction of another long-acting injectable ARV, Cabotegravir (CAB), launched in February 2024.

The minister has attributed this achievement to the vision of President Hakainde Hichilema, whose government continues to champion investments in health innovations and public health advancements.

Dr Muchima has since commended ZAMRA for the efficient and timely regulatory approval, saying it demonstrates Zambia’s readiness to fast-track safe, high-impact medical products without compromising quality or safety standards.

He recalled that on 24th September 2025, while attending the UN General Assembly in New York, he joined former U.S. President Bill Clinton in announcing a negotiated price of 40 United States dollars per year for the six-monthly ARV.

He expressed happiness that within six weeks, Zambia has successfully registered the product, making it the second country in Africa, after South Africa, to do so.

Dr Muchima emphasised that the introduction of Lenacapavir has significant implications for HIV prevention in Zambia, which continues to record about 30,000 new infections annually, particularly among adolescent girls and young women.

“The availability of this drug gives hope to those who struggle to take daily or two-monthly HIV prevention doses, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers at risk of infection, and men who prefer to access prevention privately,” he said.

The minister has since directed the ministry’s HIV programme and the National AIDS Council to develop innovative delivery models that extend services beyond traditional health facilities.

Dr Muchima further called for the use of community structures, adolescent-friendly centres, and the private sector to ensure easy access to Lenacapavir.

He stressed that Lenacapavir will be provided free of charge to all eligible Zambians, warning that no one should pay to access the drug.

Western PS concerned with growing number of pupils with HIV

0

Western Province Permanent Secretary, Simomo Akapelwa, has expressed worry over the escalating number of pupils living with the HIV virus in the province.

Mr Akapelwa says increased moral decay among some school going children such as abuse of psychotropic substances have contributed greatly to the increased number of new HIV infection rates coupled with mental health challenges in the province.

The Permanent Secretary said this through his Assistant Secretary, Dr Mubetelela Sililo, during the Provincial Adolescent Health Indaba held in Senanga District.

He said about 2, 255 school going children were tested HIV positive in 2012 in the province, and has since called on young people to desist from engaging themselves in sexual activities and social vices.

The media reports that Mr Akapelwa said it was saddening to note that 57% of pregnancies recorded mostly were among girls under the age of 14 and 24 years, adding that the new dawn administration has placed the health of adolescents on top of its agenda.

Speaking shortly after the official launch of the Indaba, Western Province Health Director, Samutumwa Njekwa, said open communication and comprehensive support systems for teenagers living with HIV is vital for helping students navigate their diagnosis in order to manage their health effectively.

Dr Njekwa said the Provincial Adolescent Indaba will help strengthen health service delivery and advance universal health coverage for young people in the province.

And, Western Province AIDS Coordinating Advisor, Yaliwe Nalishebo, observed that transmission of HIV from a mother living with HIV to her child during pregnancy, has remained high in the province.

She said Sesheke and Mongu Districts have continued recording a huge number of new HIV infections among the 16 districts of Western Province.

Mrs Nalishebo has implored young children in the province to avoid indulging themselves in illicit behaviour in order to live a healthy life.

The Western Provincial Indaba for 2025 has been held under the theme “Ascertaining the role of young people in enhancing prevention and ending epidemics”.

The Indaba has attracted hundreds of adolescents from across the province.

President Hichilema has since urged Zambians to support and encourage young people to take leadership roles and make a positive impact in their communities.

And Zambia Man of the Year Awards Board Chairperson, Kangwa Chanda, highlighted the importance of celebrating men and their contributions to society.

“Men are not celebrated enough in our society, we often focus on recognising and honouring women, but we forget that men also play a crucial role in our communities and families,” she said.

Ms Kangwa added that, “today’s event is a celebration of the greatness of Zambian men, and we are proud to honour President Hichilema as our Man of the Year”.

She added that President Hichilema’s story is an inspiration to other men, demonstrating that with hard work, determination and a clear vision, anything is possible.

“Today, we are honouring individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to excellence and their achievements are a testament to the potential and talent that exists in our country, and we must continue to support and encourage our young people to strive for greatness,” she said.

Ms Mulyata also highlighted the achievements of President Hichilema’s government, citing the increase in the Constituency Development Fund, the revival of the mining sector, and the growth in agriculture and livestock sectors.

“Under your leadership, we have seen significant progress in various sectors, and we are proud of your commitment to delivering development to the people of Zambia,” she said.

Presidential aide happy with CDF scholarships

1

Special Assistant to the President for Project Implementation, Monitoring and National Security, Lawrence Mwananyanda says the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is transforming the lives of many Zambian youths through scholarships for tertiary education, particularly in livestock and veterinary sciences.

Speaking during the second graduation ceremony for Munali Hills College of Biotechnology in Lusaka today, Dr Mwananyanda revealed that over 70 percent of the graduating students in veterinary sciences were sponsored under CDF.

He said government will continue to provide a conducive environment for young people to pursue training in agriculture and livestock production.

“This is a remarkable achievement for the CDF programme, this is exactly what CDF was meant to do, empower our youth with practical skills that will help them create wealth especially in rural areas,” he said.

Dr Mwananyanda has since encouraged the graduates to utilise their newly acquired skills to contribute to food security and poverty reduction, particularly in the face of climate change and livestock disease outbreaks.

“The effects of climate change have been devastating to the livestock sector leading to poor nutrition and recurrent disease outbreaks. We are counting on you the graduates to find innovative ways of feeding animals and improving productivity,” he said.

And Munali Hills College of Biotechnology Principle, Michelo Mwaka, has called on graduating students and stakeholders in the agriculture sector to harness innovation and scientific knowledge to unlock Zambia’s livestock potential and ensure food security for all.

Mr Mwaka said the training provided at the institution is designed not only to produce graduates but also to create solution-oriented professionals capable of transforming Zambia’s farming landscape through biotechnology and veterinary innovation.

“Our goal is not just to graduate students, but to empower problem solvers who will sustain livelihoods, create wealth, and drive Zambia’s agricultural transformation,” he said.

Mr Mwaka further said the livestock sector remains a key pillar of Zambia’s economic growth, yet still under exploited due to low productivity, animal disease outbreaks, and limited value addition.

And one of the graduating students, Brighton Kasonde, CDF has been more than just financial support to him but a lifeline that turned his dreams into reality.

Kasonde shared how he nearly dropped out of school due to financial challenges before the CDF sponsorship came to his rescue.

“I started my studies in January 2022 and faced difficulties paying my fees by the time I reached my second year, I saw some of my friends sponsored under CDF and decided to apply. Two months later I was accepted and that changed everything,” he shared.

The graduate, who hails from Central Province, expressed gratitude to the government and his local leaders for implementing the programme that supports vulnerable but determined youths.

A 15-year-old girl of Kapiri Mposhi District of Central Province has given birth to a rare set of conjoined twins at Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital, making it the first case to be recorded at the facility.

Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital, Acting Medical Officer-In-Charge, Mwelwa Mbita, confirmed the development in an interview with the media, disclosing that the babies are in a critical condition.

“The twins are currently in respiratory distress, and we are making arrangements to transfer them to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka for specialised care,” Dr Mbita said.

She added that the mother is a 15-year-old Grade Six pupil at a named school in the district.

“The twins were delivered from an adolescent mother who is still in school, and this presents both medical and social challenges,” Dr Mbita explained.

The grandmother of the twins, who is now caring for both the teenage mother and the infants, has appealed for help from members of the public and well-wishers.

“I cannot manage to take care of the babies and the mother on my own. I am asking for any kind of help from well-wishers because we have nothing,” she said, adding that the father of the twins, also aged 15, has relocated to another town and cannot be reached.

And Kapiri Mposhi District Commissioner, Francis Hasalama, described the situation as unfortunate and called for both counselling and community support for the young mother.

“We have to help this family. I’m appealing to all well-wishers to come on board so that the girl can in the future, go back to school,” Mr Hasalama said.

He further emphasised the importance of counselling for the teenage mother to help her cope with the experience and rebuild her future.

“It’s important that she receives proper counselling and support to recover and continue with her education,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Mbita noted that the hospital has never recorded a case of conjoined twins before, describing it as a rare occurrence in the district.

Call for stronger multi-sectoral response to health emergencies

0

Northern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Beauty Undi-Phiri, has called for a strengthened multi-sectoral approach in responding to public health emergencies affecting the province.

Ms. Undi-Phiri noted that since 2024, Northern Province has faced several health emergencies, including cholera, Mpox and measles outbreaks.

Speaking when she officially opened the Provincial Epidemic Preparedness and Response meeting in Kasama, Ms. Undi-Phiri said the most significant challenge in 2025 has been the ongoing cholera outbreak.

“As of November 4, 2025, the province had recorded a cumulative total of 482 cholera cases affecting five districts namely Mpulungu, Mbala, Nsama, Senga Hill and Kaputa,” she said.

She explained that the first case was detected in Mpulungu on August 5, 2025, which has since recorded 305 cases while Nsama has reported 147 cases, with Senga Hill and Kaputa having recorded five and one case respectively.

Ms. Undi-Phiri added that between 2024 and 2025, the province also recorded 582 confirmed cases of measles, with Mungwi accounting for 493 and Kasama for 89.

Meanwhile, Northern Province Health Director, Ernest Mutale, emphasized the need for collective responsibility in tackling communicable diseases.

Professor Mutale cited poor sanitation and hygiene as major contributors to cholera outbreaks.

He disclosed that the province has recorded four cholera-related deaths but has largely contained the disease, with only one active case remaining in treatment centers as of November 7, 2025.

“It is incumbent upon everyone, this issue is not only for the Ministry of Health but for all stakeholders to play their part,” he said.

He credited the progress to support from government and cooperating partners, including UNICEF, the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), the Red Cross, and the Global Fund.

Govt drives industrialisation through SME support and local content promotion

0

Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Permanent Secretary, Subeta Mutelo, says government is implementing strategies aimed at driving industrialisation across the country.

Mrs. Mutelo said this is evident through the establishment of multiple Multi-Facility Economic Zones and Industrial Yards under the Ministries of Commerce and Small and Medium Enterprise Development, designed to support manufacturing, agro-processing and innovation.

She said this when she officiated at the ongoing 5th North-Western Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business and Investment Expo, held under the theme “Unlocking Industrial Growth, Financing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Strengthening Local Content and Leveraging the Lobito Corridor.”

Mrs. Mutelo explained that to promote inclusivity, government is implementing the Local Content and Supply Development Framework to enhance Zambian participation in the mining, construction and energy sectors.

“Engagements with mining houses here in North-Western Province are ensuring that more local suppliers benefit from this sector,” she said.

She added that SMEs should explore opportunities beyond mining, citing the Lobito Corridor as a transformative project that offers vast potential for business participation.

The Permanent Secretary noted that infrastructure development remains key to unlocking rural economic potential, pointing to projects such as the Solwezi-Kipushi and Mutanda-Kasempa-Kaoma roads recently launched by President Hakainde Hichilema as examples of government’s commitment to improving connectivity.

Mrs. Mutelo said the North-West Business and Investment Expo provides a unique platform for engagement among investors, entrepreneurs and policymakers, fostering innovation and sustainable national development.

She reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting initiatives like business expos that promote industrial growth and inclusive participation, urging entrepreneurs to remain bold, innovative and resilient.

“To our investors and partners, Zambia is open for business. We offer a stable political environment, sound economic policies and value partnerships with the private sector,” she stated.

Meanwhile, Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Anthony Kabaghe, called on investors to build the capacity of local suppliers to meet international standards, improve financial management and adopt safer and more efficient operational practices.

He further urged Zambian businesses to embrace excellence and form joint ventures to seize emerging opportunities.

And North-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Lackson Mulumbi, noted that industrial activities in the region have expanded beyond mining into tourism, agriculture and manufacturing.

Mr Mulumbi urged SMEs to operate transparently and for cooperating partners to help remove bottlenecks such as corruption that hinder business growth.

North-Western Chamber of Commerce and Industry President, Amos Kapi, thanked President Hichilema for enacting the Local Content Policy, calling for its effective and transparent implementation through strong collaboration between government, industry and business associations.

Betting Agent Fakes Robbery to Cover Up Gambling Losses

1

A man from Mikiloni Township has been arrested after police discovered he fabricated an armed robbery story to conceal the fact that he had lost his clients’ money through online betting.

The false incident was initially reported to have occurred on Monday around 13:20 hours along Close Road near Jacaranda School. Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer Peacewell Siandenge stated that the man, Obby Chishala, claimed to have been conducting his mobile money business using a bicycle when the alleged robbery took place.

According to Mr. Siandenge, Chishala alleged that he had earlier withdrawn K110,000 from Stanbic Bank at Park Mall and placed the cash in a black bag before continuing his business rounds. He further told police that as he reached Independence Avenue near the UCZ Church, the driver of an unregistered black Mark X approached him, asking if he had K20,000 cash available.

Mr. Siandenge said Chishala claimed the suspects then locked the vehicle doors, and one of them, seated in the back, produced a firearm and demanded the bag of money. “Fearing for his life, the victim allegedly handed over the cash and his Itel phone valued at K400 before being pushed out of the vehicle,” the police officer recounted.

However, a police investigation has since revealed that the report was entirely false and was intended to cover up the misappropriation of funds belonging to other people. “Brief facts of the matter are that Chishala is a former super mobile money agent contracted to sell float to other agents under Lamba Zambia Limited. It was later discovered that he had a shortage of K50,000 with his contractor, leading to his super agent SIM card being blocked. His clients, however, were unaware that their float supplier’s contract had been suspended,” Mr. Siandenge explained.

Investigators found that Chishala later received K97,000 from nine mobile money agents, money that was intended for float. “Instead of sending float to his clients, Chishala decided to use the money to gamble on Aviator and lost everything. His phone has since been inspected, confirming that he indeed placed such bets,” Mr. Siandenge confirmed.

Police also established that Chishala does not hold any account with Stanbic Bank, and the phone he claimed was stolen has been recovered. “The affected nine people have confirmed giving him the said amount of money,” Mr. Siandenge said.

As a result, police have opened dockets of theft by agent and giving false information to public officers against Obby Chishala.
