Team Zambia has today completed its mission at the Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing Company in Dubai after seeing off the last consignment of ballot papers from the plant to the airport for delivery to Zambia on Thursday this week.

The team reiterated its satisfaction at the work done and the cooperation that existed among different political parties, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) and other stakeholders during the printing and packaging process.

Himba Malambo of the People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) said it was pleasing that the ballot paper printing exercise has been accomplished without any dissatisfaction among stakeholders.

Ms. Malambo, who spoke on behalf of other political parties, said all stakeholders were happy with the whole process.

And Bishop Shemmy Makelele from the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), who represented the church in Zambia in Dubai, urged Zambians to remain peaceful and united as they await the arrival of ballot papers and the subsequent casting of votes on August 11, 2016.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Supreme Council of Zambia (ISCZ) has said Zambians should trust the team in Dubai on the information they have given regarding the printing and packaging process of ballot papers.

ISCZ Secretary General Sheikh Shaban Abdulamajeed Phiri, who represented other faith based organisations, said it was encouraging that all stakeholders have expressed satisfaction with the whole process in Dubai.

And the leader of team Zambia Emily Sikazwe said the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was happy with the work which stakeholders have done during the whole process.

Dr. Sikazwe, who is one of the Commissioners at ECZ, said the unity and the work which stakeholders have done in Dubai was a demonstration that Zambia was ready to strengthen her democratic process.

She said there was transparency and credibility during the team’s stay in Dubai.

The last batch to be transported to the airport in Dubai comprised 189 pallets containing ballot papers for the mayoral/councillor, local government and national assembly elections.

Each of the three levels of elections has 63 pallets of ballot papers.

Yesterday, 155 pallets containing ballot papers for presidential election and the referendum, posters and NRC verification forms were transported to the airport in readiness for delivery to Zambia.

All pallets will have an allowance of 24 hours to allow for cooling in the airport warehouse before being transported to Zambia on Thursday, July 28, 2016.

Police launches probe on Cops posing with UPND posters

34

post
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has revealed that an inquiry file has been opened over a Post Newspapers front page story which showed five men wearing police officers and posing with UPND campaign posters.

The story headlined Cops Protest alleges that about 22 police officers sought to be interviewed at a private location and five of them volunteered to be photographed displaying UPND posters, saying the police was the most affected government institution by the PF abuse.

The story further alleges that the police officers said they are sick and tired of this stupid abuse of officers by PF cadres now where our superiors cannot even defend professionalism in the police service anymore and that they have since joined the UPND Operation Watermelon, describing it as a protest move against their abuse by the PF government.

But Mr Kanganja told a media briefing in Lusaka today that the Zambia Police Service has never been partisan and will always remain impartial.

“It is in this regard that I am urging all peace loving Zambians to desist from bringing Police officers into politics. I am referring to today’s post newspaper edition No 7221 which has paraded purported Police officers supporting a political party. An inquiry file has since been opened,” Mr Kanganja said.

“I therefore, wish to assure all Zambians of our commitment to a peaceful, fair, credible and violent free election. Let the people of Zambia have trust and confidence in the Police. This is their institution mandated by law to protect life and property, preserve peace and maintain law and order, Ensure the security of the people of Zambia and Up hold the bill of rights.”

And Mr Kanganja has disclosed that the assertions by UPND senior officials namely Mr Garry Nkombo and Ms Silvia Masebo and the Post Newspaper of foreign nationals having been registered by the Electoral Commission of Zambia as voters have been found to be false.

He said on 13th May, 2016 a report was made by Mr Nkombo and Ms Masebo at Woodlands Police Station to the effect that over 500,000 foreigners had been registered by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ)as voters.

Mr Kanganja said this according to their claim was a ECZ calculated act to rig the elections in favour of the Patriotic Front (PF).

“On 5th July,2016 the Nation would recall that the Post newspaper edition No 7200 carried a story with a headline “ECZ SOURCES EXPOSE GHOST VOTERS” in which the paper published 207 names of people purported to be foreigners but registered as voters by ECZ. The edition indicated that 178 were Malawians while 29 were Tanzanians,” he said.

“Considering the seriousness of the allegations as made by Mr Garry Nkombo and Ms Silvia Masebo and a story carried in this edition of the post newspaper investigations were instituted. After thorough investigations the 207 names as published in the post newspaper Edition No. 7200 have been found to be Zambians nationals from Chief Chanje Chiefdom Rukuzye ward in Chipangali constituency.”

He added, “To our great disappointment the details of the people published in the post newspaper edition were collected from residents of this same ward by the village Headwoman Katamanda whose real names are Alaina Phiri after being engaged by two women who were introduced to her by headman Mbobo, whose real names are Mr Tumeyo Mbobo Phiri a UPND chairperson for Rukuzye ward in Chipangali Constituency after being promised to be paid K2500 after the task of which a down payment of K500 was made. The Headwoman thereafter engaged two of her subjects Mary Manda and Lena Nkhoma to execute this task.”

He said when approached by the investigation team Headman Mbobo acknowledged having introduced two women who were later identified as Mrs Caroline Zulu Munyumbwe and Mrs Chona Malata both teachers at Katete Primary School who were conducting voter sensitizations workshops for the UPND at a church building in Mafuta Village, to Village Headwoman Katamanda.

“The investigations team further interviewed the people from whom voters cards were collected and their details of National Registration Cards were compared as also found in the provisional voters register for Chipangali ward Constituency and were found to be the same.”

Mr Kanganja said arising from the findings of this exhaustive investigation, Headwoman Katamanda Alaina Phiri and Headman Mbobo Tumelo Phiri have since been charged and arrested.

He said the duo were arrested and jointly charged for the offence of illegal practices relating to the poll, Contrary to Section 87 (1d) and Section 88 of the Electoral Process Act No. 35 of 2016 as read together with Section 21 (1c) of the Penal Code Act Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

“The duo appeared in court on Friday 22nd July, 2016 and are remanded in custody. A man hunt has also been launched for the two female teachers currently on the run. As regards to the 29 Tanzanians allegedly registered as voters by ECZ our investigations have established that they are Zambians registered as voters in Mbala and Mpulungu.”

He said the assertions by Mr Nkombo, Ms Masebo and the Post Newspaper of foreign nationals having been registered by the ECZ as voters have been found to be false.

“We are warning people involving themselves in such illegal practices that they risk being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the Law. All those that could have participated must surely know that the long arm of the Law will eventually catch up with them and they shall be brought to book as their action has the potential to compromise the security of our nation.”

And on the shooting of a UPND female cadre identified as Mapenzi Chibulo on 8th July,2016, Mr Kanganja said investigations are still ongoing.,

“I wish to once again regret the loss of life and wish to inform the nation that this is a serious matter that requires thorough investigation. The investigations are still ongoing and at an opportune time the nation will be accordingly informed. I would like to appeal to all citizens of Zambia to shun violence and remain peaceful before, during and after elections.”

Koffi Olomide slapped with 18-month jail term for assaulting dancer

Koffi Olomide escorted from his home by plice after his arrested

Congolese music star Koffi Olomide has been slapped with a 18-month jail term by a Kinshasa court without the option of a fine for assaulting one of his dancers in Nairobi.

The jailing of the Congolese musician deepened the free fall in his long career that started with the kicking of one of his dancers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Nairobi last Friday.

Mr Olomide was deported alongside three of his female dancers.

In Zambia, his shows set for this weekend had to be cancelled by the Agriculture Show Society after Zambians took to social media and called for his ban.

Police arrived at his residence in a continuation of perhaps the worst run in Mr Olomide’s fortunes, a painful price to pay for his moment of madness in Nairobi.

According to reports from Kinshasa, a campaign to have him arrested was started by Congressman Zakarie Bababaswe, who had filed a petition on behalf of the Congolese public to have the musician punished for assault.

Mr Bababaswe had in a televised press conference wondered why Mr Olomide was “still walking scot free and yet there was video evidence that he assaulted his dancer in Kenya?”

Incidentally, the congressman and Mr Olomide used to be good friends until they fell out after the musician and Cindy Le Coeur, his lead singer, were accused of belittling him through their songs.

His arrest, which was ordered by the Attorney-General, has been received with jubilation by locals and foreigners, who feel justice must be done to all, and especially in enforcing women’s rights.

Since the video footage of the incident, in which one of Africa’s leading musicians lashed out with a “kung Fu kick” at one of his dancers, Mr Olomide has suffered a huge setback in a career the otherwise mercurial singer, composer and band leader has diligently nurtured for several decades.

UBA denies link to Turkish failed coup

3

turkey coup

United Bank of Africa which operates in Zambia and several other West African states has denied any involvement in the recent failed coup in Turkey.

Yenisafak, a Turkish newspaper, has alleged that the United Bank of Africa (UBA) played a key role in the distribution of funds for the facilitation of the failed coup.

But UBA Plc Head of Communications Charles Aigbe said the bank is aware of the on-going and spurious media speculation linking the institution to recent events in Turkey.

“In light of this we believe it is necessary to categorically state that UBA has no involvement in or connection to these accusations, which are clearly false. We remain focused and firmly committed to delivering on our strategy to build Africa’s premier banking institution,” Mr Aigbe said in a brief statement.

The newspaper alleged that John F. Campbell, a general in the US Army, is alleged to have orchestrated the military coup attempt in Turkey, which took place on July 15, but he has described the allegations as “ridiculous”.

CIA operatives were said to have transferred millions of dollars from Nigeria to Turkey within six months.

The funds, which were relayed by an “80-person special team of the CIA”, was used to win over the generals predisposed to the coup, led by Campbell, former U.S. commander of a NATO-led security mission in Afghanistan, the newspaper alleged.

In total, “over $2 billion dollars were distributed during the process leading to the coup”, the report said.

The information was reportedly obtained from sources close to ongoing legal process of detainees in the government’s custody.

Campbell was said to have “organized and managed the soldiers behind the attempted coup”.

“Campbell also managed more than $2 billion money transactions via UBA Bank in Nigeria by using CIA links to distribute among the pro-coup military personnel in Turkey. After taking money from their bank accounts, the CIA team hand delivered it to the terrorists under the military dresses,” it said.

The failed coup plot was organized by the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) led by cleric Fethullah Gülen who’s on self-exile in America.

The report also inferred that American intelligence, military and other institutions “supported the FETO leader Gülen and his gangs for the military coup”.

While the coup shook Turkey, the joint efforts of the country’s citizens, politicians, media and police forces averted the potential forceful takeover of the government.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoga on Monday ordered the detention of 42 journalists, a post-coup crackdown which has affected more than 60,000 people in the European country.
Several military bosses, soldiers, police, judges and civil servants have been arrested in the past two weeks.

Law experts in the Ministry of Justice have cautioned people who are spreading false information on the proposed Bill of Rights that it has enshrined homosexuality.

Senior Parliamentary Counsel, Kevin Mweemba, dispelled the rumours in Isoka district of Muchinga province yesterday during the ongoing country wide sensitisation campaign on the referendum.

Mr Mweemba explained that under further and special rights a person who has attained the age of 19 has the right to choose a spouse of the opposite sex and marry.

He challenged Heads of Government Departments, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) civil society and church leaders to explain in depth the need for voting for the referendum on August 11, 2016.

Mr Mweemba said people should be realistic and just turn up to vote on August 11 .

He stressed that the Bill of Rights has eliminated early marriages as one will be allowed to marry only when she or he attains the age of 19 years or above.

And Isoka District Administrative Officer, Gershom Jere, has praised government through the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services for sensitising the people in the district.

Mr Jere said people now are equipped with information on why they should vote for yes or no in the referendum.

He said the question for the referendum is already set … “Do you agree to the amendment to the constitution to enhance the bill of right contained in part 3 of the constitution. Of Zambia and to repeal and replacement. Article 79. Of the constitution of Zambia ?”

A team of lawyers has been on a marathon referendum sensitisation tour of Eastern and Muchinga provinces.
