Patriotic Front Deputy Secretary General Mumbi Phiri has challenged UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to go ahead and sue the Times of Zambia for the story in which he is reported to have castigated Chieftainess Choongo for welcoming PF Secretary General Davies Chama.

Speaking to ZNBC in a walk in interview in Lusaka, the PF deputy secretary said that UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema should lead by example in promoting peace and unity.

Meanwhile, UPND members have petitioned party Secretary General Steven Katuka to take legal action against PF Secretary General Davies Chama, some media houses and individuals reporters for defaming party leader Hakainde Hichilema.

This follows stories carried by some media houses alleging that the UPND Leader castigated Chieftainess Choongo of Monze district for welcoming and interacting with Mr.Chama in Bemba.

Briefing journalists in Lusaka this morning, UPND Deputy Secretary General Captain Walusiku Lyambela said that the party membership has decided to petition Mr. Katuka to take legal action against Mr. Chama because they feel he is a great danger to national peace and stability.

She said that the actions of Mr. Chama and the media houses carrying certain stories are provocative and an abuse of the public media.

Captain Lyambela said that the party membership is ready to defend their Leader and put to an end the continued tormenting of Mr. Hichilema under the PF leadership.

She stated that the UPND membership feels their leader is being harassed by the PF Government.

PF is plotting to arrest me for helping farmers – Nawakwi

Forum for Democracy and Development President Edith Nawakwi has disclosed that the PF government is plotting to arrest her for initiating a program of helping farmers with farming inputs.

Ms Nawakwi disclosed this when she delivered farming inputs to farmers in Chinkuli Ward in Kasisi area of Chongwe Constituency this afternoon.

Ms Nawakwi says if it is illegal to help the people with inputs to ease their burden of looking for inputs, then she is more than ready to go to jail.

She says before the PF Government questions her source of her funding for her program of supplying farming inputs to farmers, it should disclose the source of funding for the charitable works by First Lady Esther Lungu.

Ms Nawakwi states that the problem she has seen in the PF administration is that they want to give the people fish instead of teaching them how to fish as a way of sustaining their lives.

The FDD Leader further told the people of Chongwe Constituency that the government has failed to give them fertilizer and other farming inputs because their area Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo is working with the opposition UPND.

She has since challenged the PF government to refute the fact that development in Chongwe Constituency has slowed down from the time the area Member of Parliament started working with the UPND.

The FDD leader says it is wrong to punish the electorates in such a manner.

Nevers Mumba says MMD will Implement Police Reforms When Elected

Nevers Mumba3
One of the few positives that came out of the infamous Lundazi Teargassing incident on 18th December 2015 is that I was able to interact closely and learn of the plight of today’s police officers. Since forming government, the Patriotic Front government has introduced a system of moving officers based on what are known as “Post Identities”, which are basically ranks. Under this system, our officers are only able to receive positive reviews and promotions based on available vacancies or vacant Post IDs.

A simple example from the military to illustrate this is to imagine that there are 5 Majors in the Army in Kabwe. Under the new system, there can be no new Majors unless one of them dies or is transferred whereas in the old system under the Movement for Multiparty Democracy, another 5 new Majors can be added to the existing 5.

We have time and again condemned this system of advancing our officers’ careers in that it takes away the hunger and motivation for our officers to outperform each each other through hardwork, educational advancements, acts of bravery and heroism. Fellow Zambians, take away the motivation of the Policemen and women and what do we have left? It is no wonder that now, our officers are only competing on who can carry out the most barbaric attack on our citizens.

If it’s not Nevers Mumba, it is Wynter Kabimba, Edith Nawakwi or those poor Zampost employees who are demonstrating peacefully on Cairo Road who will be harassed. One of the things we will do as the New MMD when we form government is to abolish the Post IDs so that only Policemen who serve the people of Zambia and its Constitution will be able to rise through the ranks and get to the top. We shall not allow our men and women in uniform to turn against and start attacking the very people they swore to protect and to defend.

We shall also guarantee security of tenure of Senior Police Officers. Not this haphazard moval and removal of senior officers under very suspicious circumstances, just to be sent out as diplomats on paper. Most of our dear men and women are currently left very frustrated after being used and then told that they shall be appointed as diplomats but they end up languishing within Zambia awaiting redeployment indefinitely. I do hope and pray that Ms Stella Libongani does actually get her posting in Canada, considering how many of her predecessors are still awaiting dispatch.

As President, I will ensure that the images of the 18th of December 2015 where our citizens were scampering in all directions fleeing from the POLICE FORCE are replaced by men and women and even children running to the officers in the POLICE SERVICE and trusting that they are safe in their care.

We shall make sure that the Police shall be a force only to criminals but a service unto the law-abiding citizens. We shall ensure the Police are well-funded and patrolling our streets every night to catch criminals unlike the current situation where criminals are freely running riot. We need a nation governed by laws and not men.

Cabinet has approved the contraction of four loans totaling US$541 million.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today following the 28th Cabinet meeting held yesterday, Acting Chief Government Spokesperson Vincent Mwale said cabinet approved the contraction of a loan from the Export and Import Bank of China amounting to US$128 million to support the implementation of the Kafue bulk water supply project which will facilitate the provision of clean water and sanitation facilities as well as mitigate health risks in Lusaka.

He says cabinet also approved the contraction of a loan from the industrial and commercial bank of China amounting to US$ 170 million to support the implementation of the Nkana water supply and sanitation project phase two.

Mr. Mwale says cabinet further approved the contraction of loans from the African Development Bank amounting to US$ 193 million and US$50 million on behalf of the Africa together Fund to support the implementation of the Chinsali-Nakonde road rehabilitation project.

And Cabinet has approved the conversion of all debt owed to Government by the four selected State owned enterprises amounting to over K3.4 billion equivalent to US$299 million as at 31st December, 2014 into equity.

Mr. Mwale named the four companies as Zambia Railways Limited, ZESCO, Zamtel and Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia.

He says the decision by Cabinet to convert the debt into equity is to clean up the balance sheets of the companies so as to make them efficient profitable and attractive for investment thus facilitate creation of value for government investments.

Mr. Mwale says the decision will make these public companies more viable and attract new investment without relying on government guarantees for them to obtain financing for expansion.

Don’t drag Bembas into tribal politics, Chitimukulu tells Chama

Mwinelubemba Chitumukulu Kanyata Manga II after being crowned at Mwenda ngombe during the installation ceremony . The ceremony was attended by president Edgar Lungu.

Paramount Chief Chitimukulu Kanyanta Manga of the Bemba speaking people has distanced Bembas from comments made by PF Secretary General Davies Chama.

Chief Chitimukulu has said that he will not entertain people that engage in divisive politics.

The traditional leader has strongly condemned people bent on promoting tribal politics in the country.

Speaking through the Bemba Royal Establishment, spokesperson James Mulenga, the Paramount Chief has urged Zambians to advocate for peace and unity in the country.

The traditional leader also urged political players in the country to promote a spirit of tolerance and co-existence.

The Paramount Chief Chitimukulu also dismissed claims in some sections of the media suggesting that the Bemba Royal Establishment is against tribes from other parts of Zambia.

“The Royal establishment wants to make it clear to all Zambians that if there is any tribe in the history of this country that sacrificed a lot for our independence are the tonga people. They did not only sacrifice their wealth, over 10,000 heads of cattle were sold to buy air tickets to send Zambian delegation to London to meet the queen to negotiate for independence. Liso Mungoni and nkumbula for ANC surrendered the presidency to KK during the Choma declaration on merit to pave way for independence.

“Bane bushe takwaba abangalemba ko history ya independence yesu for our young generation to know?” The Chief wondered.

“We can’t take away anything from the Tonga people. Tongas have a justified reason to keep the democratic rights of this country in check to ensure their investments in our independence is worthwhile. We must value their contribution. Lets face it, in the history of our country no tribe has been this United for one purpose as the Tonga people. Zambian democracy from Kaunda to Lungu has been kept in check by our Tonga brothers, deny it or accept it.

“We therefore request political parties such as the Patriotic Front to settle their political scores without involving the Bemba people.

“Comments from Chama are uncivilised and can only come from unprogressive minds that want to take us in delirium. Young man, we have come a long way, politicians can’t divide us,

“The clan is nothing more than a larger family, with its patriarchal chief as the natural head, and the union of several clans by intermarriage and voluntary connection constitutes the tribe no politician can break this bond, I have several Tongas married to Bembas and vice versa. Ultimately, we actually all belong to only one tribe, to earthlings.

“There is only one superior tribe in zambia, that’s the Zambian Human race which is blind to province, regionalism or colour,” emphasised the Chitimukulu.

Wife denies hubby sex after circumcision

court

CIRCUMCISION  may have health benefits for both men and women but one Lusaka husband’s decision to undergo the procedure left him sexless in his marriage.
Dickson Kapeso, 30, of Kanyama township told the court that his wife started denying him his conjugal rights after he got circumcised in 2013.
Speaking before justices Daniel Phiri, Abraham Phiri and Sara Nyendwa, Kapeso said his wife, Carol Phiri, 30, of Makeni Villa started refusing to engage in sexual relations with him for undergoing circumcision, accusing him of being promiscuous.
Kapeso said out of ignorance, Phiri believes circumcision is a passport for a man to misbehave because he cannot easily get sexually transmitted infections. He said he now has to fight with his wife for them to engage in sexual relations.
This is in a case in which Kapeso sued Phiri for divorce. Kapeso said the two have been married since 2003 and have five children together.
“I have stayed for six weeks without sexual intercourse because my wife fears she can get infected. We have now been apart for two years. I failed to stay that long without enjoying my conjugal rights, so I decided to re-marry.”
He complained that during the time they lived as man and wife, Phiri did not follow traditional rites on how to warn her husband when she was on her menses.
“I expected her to hang a string of red beads on the wall but she wouldn’t. In the night I would pounce on her only to find myself littered with blood,” he said.
But Phiri said Kapeso has been in the habit of abandoning her and their children.
She said he did the same in 2013 when she had a two months old baby.
“Our child is now two years and five months but he has never seen the baby in court,” she said.
The court granted divorce and ordered Kapeso to pay Phiri K8,000 as compensate Phiri.

Zambian Super League footballer of the year Winston Kalengo has signed a one year deal with Congo Brazzaville side AC Leopards.

Zesco United General Secretary Justin Mumba said the two Clubs concluded talks Monday evening and the goal poacher is set to join his new club before 7th February when the league in that country commences.

And Kalengo told www.zescounitedfc.com that leaving Zesco United is emotional for him because he feels like he is leaving a part of him.

“I have been here for five years and leaving home is like leaving a part of me although I feel I have played my part here and it’s time for me to move and try out a new challenge,” he said.

He said he owes his 2015 success to God and the entire Zesco United for the team work and the hard work exhibited throughout the year.

Kalengo said he feels there is a lot of competition at Zesco United hence his performance this year.

“Am certain that Zesco United will go far in the champions League as well as in the local league next year because there are a lot of players that is a lot of competition which results in hard work, the George Lwandamina led Technical bench is excellent and the executive put in the best to make sure the team has all the equipment,” he said.

He said he will leave his mantle with Lazarous Kambole who he feels has a bright future and can fit in his shoes because he is hard working.

“I have confidence in the young man and am sure he will one day make headlines, I would like him to take my number next year and therefore I would like to take this opportunity to ask the Team manager to give Lazarous jersey 10,” he said.

And Mumba said the club is happy that Kalengo’s hard work this year has been recognized by a lot of clubs looking at the number of offers that were made for him.

“We are happy that among all the offers we got for the player he chose this one because it had the best conditions and as a club we will support him even as he settles at his new club. He has been an instrumental player in the years he has been here and we are happy that his hard work is paying off,” he said.

Mumba stated that Kalengo will return to Zesco United at the end of his contract.

Government accuses SDA members of linking the –E-voucher system to Satanism

Government has accused some members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of going round telling farmers to shun the recently launched E-voucher system because it is allegedly linked to Satanism.

Agriculture Deputy Minister Maxas Ngonga said in an interview that the Ministry has received disturbed information that some farmers who are on the E-Voucher scheme in Central Province have been told to abandon it as it is satanic.

Mr Ngonga said his recent tour of the Central Province also confirmed that some SDA members are going round villagers in Chibombo and Chisamba telling farmers that the E-Voucher is part of the prophecy found in the book of Revelations.

‘It is very discouraging that as Government we are working hard to introduce systems to improve our agriculture system but our friends in the SDA community are working to undo such works,’ Mr Ngonga said.

He added, ‘These are just misconceptions. They are telling people that the E-Voucher card is part of the 666 prophecy in the Bible but as Government we are saying the E-Voucher card is just like any other Visa card, Government loads money on the card and the farmer uses it to access farming inputs.’

Mr Ngonga feared that failure to appreciate the use of technology by farmers will make it difficult for Government to improve the agriculture sector.

PF has cheated Zambians on constitution – Kabimba

Wynter Kabimba
Wynter Kabimba

Rainbow Party Leader Wynter Kabimba says Zambians have been cheated in the constitution making process and should therefore not praise the PF for the constitution amendment bill passed by Parliament recently.

Mr. Kabimba says it is painful that some stakeholders are praising the PF Government that they have delivered 80 percent of the new constitution which is not what the ruling party promised in its manifesto.

He says the PF have gone against their own manifesto which he helped formulate, with regards the constitution making process.

Mr. Kabimba has since called for a platform on which consensus should be reached over the constitution making process.

He says there is no doubt that the current PF leadership has abandoned the PF manifesto pertaining to the constitution making process.

The Former PF Secretary General and Justice Minister says having been part of a team that formulated the PF manifesto, the route of amending the constitution was never discussed at any time.

He explains that the PF manifesto clearly states that the PF will abolish the current constitution and replace it with a new supreme law of the land.

Movie Review : Star Wars -The Force Awakens

1

star-wars-force-awakens-official-poster

Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a rag-tag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance

PROS

  • Great visual effects and imagery
  • The action scenes were done to perfection

CONS

  • If you have never watched any of the previous Star Wars movies you will not know some of the characters and their significance to the plot , as they are not properly introduced to the audience .
  • Not much back story was given about the “bad guys” , the First Order. Also the “good guys” ,the resistance , we were not told what they were fighting for .

FAVORITE QUOTES

Rey: There are stories about what happened.

Han Solo: It’s true. All of it. The Dark Side, the Jedi. They’re real.

Finn: We’ll figure it out, we’ll use the Force!

Han Solo: That’s not how the Force works!

CONCLUSION

There was massive hype surrounding the release of the latest installment in the Star Wars saga , The Force Awakens . Unfortunately , what seems to have been a trend this year , the movie did not live up to the hype . Don’t get me wrong , it was a very good movie , it just didn’t blow my mind as i thought it would .

The movie had a heavy reliance on nostalgia , such that if you have never watched any Star Wars movie you will be left in the dark about some of the characters and their relationships with each other and some major elements that pertain to the plot . That was my main gripe with the movie .

What i did like about the movie was the new characters , Daisy Ridley( Rey)  and John Boyega (Finn) the former Storm Trooper . John Boyega , in particular, had a great performance ,perfectly delivering a wide range of emotions . The action scenes were splendid, especially the fight scenes with the light-sabers . Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) put up an excellent performance as the the primary antagonist.

Zambia deports two Rwandan ‘genocide’ suspects

The Zambian Government at the weekend deported to Kigali two Rwandan refugees for suspected involvement in the 1994 genocide, their lawyer told AFP on Monday.

“We don’t know what they have done, but one of our clients was told that he was involved in genocide and wanted back home,” said lawyer Dickson Jere.

The two are Egibe Rwasibo, who works as a medical officer at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, and businessman Innocent Habumugisha who operates shops in the capital city.

Jere said he was making efforts to challenge the deportation in court while the duo were still at Kigali airport.

“They are currently stranded at the airport in Kigali,” he said.

Some Rwandan nationals resident in Lusaka claimed the two were handcuffed and blindfolded before being taken to Kenneth Kaunda international airport.

Zambia’s Immigration Department spokesman Namati Nshinka confirmed the expulsion but denied it was linked to the genocide.

“Yes, it is true that the two were deported yesterday (Sunday). The reason is that their continued stay here was a danger to good order and peace. It’s nothing to do with genocide,” he said.

Rwanda’s 1994 genocide saw around 800,000 people — mostly members of the minority Tutsi community — slaughtered in a 100-day orgy of violence, largely by ethnic Hutus.

A source told AFP that the two have been living in Zambia since 1997.

UPND Solwezi Central Member of Parliament Dawson Kafwaya has refuted online media reports that he has officially defected to the PF.

Mr. Kafwaya who is currently serving as North Western Province Minister said in an interview that reports that he is now a member of the PF are misleading.

He said people should not believe everything they read on social media.

‘Why do you people believe these things you read on social media? Who told you i have defected? My brother get your facts right,’ Mr Kafwaya said.

But sources that attended a PF party meeting which Mr Kafwaya addressed on Sunday in Solwezi confirmed that the Solwezi MP officially defected to the PF.

‘He openly told the PF members during the meeting that they should start campaigning for him now because a bye election is coming and he is going to stand on the PF ticket,’ Mr Kafwaya said.

11 firms pre-qualify to submit bids for two 50 MW solar PV power plants in Zambia

2

The Industrial Development Corporation Zambia Limited (IDC) has pre-qualified 11 bidders to develop the initial 2x50MW Utility-Scale Solar Photovoltaic IPP Projects under Round 1 of the 600MW Scaling Solar Project announced and launched earlier this year.

The prequalification follows a competitive request for quotation process that ran from 05 October 2015 to 13 November 2015, in which a total of 48 applications were received.

The evaluation of bids was conducted by an evaluation committee comprising of members drawn from the Zambia Development Agency, ZESCO, Rural Electrification Authority, Engineering Institution of Zambia and IDC.

The evaluation process involved a three-stage appraisal system with technical, financial, and legal requirements being evaluated respectively.

Following the severe energy crisis in Zambia in 2015 on account of low water levels for adequate hydro power generation, President Edgar Lungu, in his capacity as Chairman of the Board of Directors, directed the IDC to target the immediate development and procurement of up to 600MW of solar PV power into the national grid as a matter of priority and urgency.

The following 11 firms or entities have been pre -qualified by the IDC to participate in the Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop the first ever grid connected solar PV power plants in Zambia consisting of 2 x 50 MW plants to be located in the Lusaka South – Multi Facility Economic Zone.
