Interview with cake maker and decorator ,Kanta Temba

photo 6

Kanta Temba is a cake maker and decorator. She is also the owner and founder of Kanta Kakes – cake shop.

Kanta was born to Zambian parents in the city of Lusaka and was raised by them in Hertfordshire, England, after the family emigrated in the late 90’s . From an early age Kanta expressed a keen interest in culinary arts. She enjoyed baking cupcakes and birthday cakes for friends and family and spent time observing her mother doing the same. She studied culinary arts at school for a time, where her passion for baking developed further.

After obtaining professional qualifications and honing her skills, 2012 saw Kanta make the bold step to establish her own cake making and decorating business, Kanta Kakes. Over the months her cake business grew from strength to strength and drew a sizable clientele.

In 2015 Kanta is set to expand her business and brand further and branch into entertainment. With her up and coming TV show called “Baking with Kanta”, and numerous other projects lined up; she aims to gain even more publicity for her work and creations. The sky is definitely not the limit for this young talented woman

KAPA187:  What first got you interested in the culinary arts, in particular to confectionary?

KANTA TEMBA: My love of cooking and baking started from when I was quite young.  I would watch my mum bake cakes and scones for us when we were little and would lick the bowl when she was finished.  I was keen to learn how to cook from an early age, and I remember the first thing I ever learnt was how to fry an egg.  I learnt a lot through trial and error. Then when I got to about 14 years old I studied Food technology and excelled – achieving top marks in my exams.   Though at university I took a different route to that of culinary arts and confectionary, it was not long before I returned to my first love.

KAPA187:  You studied for a biomedical degree but ultimately decided to take a career as a cake maker/decorator. What made you take that decision and was your family in support of that?

KANTA TEMBA:  I did study biomedical science, because I initially thought I should have a conventional career.  It was a hard decision to make to pursue a career as a cake maker/decorator.  However, I made that decision because I had to be true to myself and follow my dreams.  This life is my own to live, it’s important for me to make decisions that I am actually happy with.  My sister was supportive from the beginning; she knew how much I love confectionary and encouraged me constantly.  However, my parents were not happy about my decision and struggled to understand why I wanted to pursue such a career.  In their eyes I was intelligent enough to become a doctor; and though this was true, they could not understand the fact that I wanted to pursue something that I actually loved.  They took a while to come round, but as they saw my talent, determination and success, they became more supportive.

KAPA187:  What was your inspiration to establish your own cake making and decorating business, Kanta Kakes?

KANTA TEMBA: Truthfully my inspiration for establishing Kanta Kakes was because I love cake making and decorating and I wanted to be my own boss and make my own rules and money.

KAPA187:  What challenges did you face when starting up your business, and how did you overcome them?

KANTA TEMBA: The biggest challenge I faced was competing with other cake makers and convincing customers of why they should come to me instead of my competitors.  However a bit of healthy competition is good, it helps you to ensure that you always do the best that you can.  I overcame this by improving my standard of work and my service; I made the effort and invested the time in bettering myself, improving my quality, my designs and the flavor of my cakes.  I also gained confidence in my work and realized that what I was offering was unique and special in its own way.  Knowing this I came to see that my biggest competition is myself, and my sole aim is to become better and provide an even better service every single time.

KAPA187:  What type of cakes do you specialize in?

KANTA TEMBA: I specialize in a variety of cakes; every type of celebration cake including but not limited to birthday cakes, baptism cakes, anniversary and wedding cakes; and bespoke cakes.

KAPA187:  Do you have any plans of expanding your business to your home country, Zambia?

KANTA TEMBA: Yes I definitely do have plans of expanding my business to Zambia, and I can’t wait to do that.

KAPA187:  What advice would you give to young people who have a passion for something and want to venture into “nontraditional” careers?

KANTA TEMBA: The advice that I would give is; to follow your dreams and do what you love.  Everyone will always have an opinion on what you should do with your life, but it is so important for you to be happy and do what makes you happy.   There is a quote that really inspires me…

“Find something in life that you love doing.  If you make a lot of money that’s a bonus; and if you don’t, you still won’t hate going to work”.

KAPA187:  You have further honed your skills by attaining professional diplomas in Sugar paste, Sugar flowers and Royal icing. There is a notion that one does not need education in the culinary arts, all that is needed is passion. What do you say about this?

KANTA TEMBA: I think that as much as passion plays a huge part, it is not what is solely required to be a professional in culinary arts.  It is always important to better yourself, and improve your skills and talent wherever possible.  There is a lot of competition in the culinary arts/baking world, there are constantly people who have more talent, more skills, more knowledge more experience or more “education”, and like in most industries it would be naïve to assume that all you need is passion.

KAPA187:  You won 1st place in the 2013 PME, Live Cake Decorating Competition in Birmingham, tell us about that experience.

KANTA TEMBA: My experience of winning first place in the 2013, live Cake decorating competition in Birmingham was great.  I was competing against eight other contestants to make the tastiest and most elaborate cake within three hours; in front of a live audience and judges. The judges’ panel included Eddie Spence MBE, who has made cakes for the Royal family; and The Queen. The cake had to be completely edible and there was an immense amount of detail that had to go into making the basket and fruits look real. It was by far the hardest cake I have ever made, and in such a short space of time. However, I did go on to win the competition, so it was all worth it in the end.

KAPA187:  Tell us about your upcoming TV show “Baking with Kanta”?

KANTA TEMBA: Without giving away too much; “Baking with Kanta” is a baking show based on me teaching my audience fun and quick ways to bake and decorate a variety of cakes and desserts.   It is a project that I have been working really hard on, and I am really excited to share it with you all.

KAPA187:  Any last words …

KANTA TEMBA: Thank you for all of your continued support.  Stay tuned because I have plenty more coming soon.  You can find my work on www.kantakakes.comFollow me on twitter @KantaKakes and Instagram @KantaTemba.

President Edgar Lungu says government is looking at ways of finding alternative sources of energy in the generation of electricity to supplement hydro power supply which is not enough to meet the whole country’s demand.

The President said alternative sources of energy such as solar would help the country cope with the effects of climate change which he said has adversely affected the current hydro power generation.

The President noted that the country’s energy sector has been badly affected by the effects of climate change which resulted in poor rainfall pattern.

“In some areas we had too much rain while in other areas we had very little rain. All those are consequences of climatic change problems which we are struggling with. I am glad that France is putting more efforts towards finding solutions to these problems,” the President told the visiting French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy who paid a courtesy call on him at State House yesterday.

The Head of State said the country is also striving to find ways of reducing on importation of petroleum products by embarking on establishment of projects that will ensure the country gets renewable sources of energy.

President Lungu told the visiting Minister that Zambia is ready to welcome partnerships with France in the area of energy because the country is looking at finding alternative sources of energy and require investment in that sector.

He said the country has vast unexploited land and forest which could be used to produce cheap energy using ecological friendly methods.

And The Visiting French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy Segolene Royal was quick to note that Africa is the victim of global warming hence the need for efforts to find solutions to problems that have been created by the phenomenon.

Mrs Royal told the President that there is need to mobilize international finance amounting to US$100 million from Copen Hagen to quickly finance projects such as alternative sources of energy like solar to reduce dependence on hydro-electricity.

She said her delegation is in Zambia to find out priority areas of investment but observed that solar energy projects seem to be vital for the country.

The Visiting Minister led a delegation comprising French Ambassador to Zambia Emmanuel Cohet who is also special representative to COMESA, French President’s Deputy Advisor for Africa Thomas Melonio, Scientific Adviser for Environmental, Bioversity and Climate Gilles Boeuf and the Advisor in charge of Bioversity, Landscape and Agro-ecology Vincent Jechoux.

MINISTER of Health Dr. Joseph Kasonde

Minister of Health Joseph Kasonde has described the contribution that the United Kingdom has made to the Health Sector IN Zambia as immense.

Dr Kasonde said the United Kingdom and Zambia share a rich history dating way back which has resulted in the development of a unique relationship where the two countries are free to share ideas on many issues of common interest.

The minister was speaking to journalists after he held a closed door meeting with a Parliamentary delegation from the United Kingdom which has been in the country touring various health facilities at the community level.

Dr. Kasonde said among the issues discussed with the visiting UK Parliamentarians is the commitment of nurses in health centers despite having a huge work load.

He said the parliamentarians have been assured that government is working on a plan which will address job satisfaction among health workers across the country.

He added that the visitors were impressed with the cleanliness they found in rural health centers but that they were however concerned about the long distances that the patients have to cover in order to reach nearest health centers.

Dr. Kasonde said in this regard, both parties shared a common support through the expansion of health institutions such as upgrading of health posts to reduce long distances for the patients.

He further said that the UK Parliamentarians were also concerned about sustainability of all the health activities which include health infrastructure development.

Dr. Kasonde said government is committed to working hard to sustain its projects although it still relies on the partnership with UK and other partners to sustain such projects.

He said the partnership with the UK has been good in the last 50 years and was optimistic that the working ties would be strengthened even further as the two countries explore different roles to play in enhancing the welfare of the people in various sectors of their countries including health.

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) says it is disheartened with the recent statement by the government proposing the mode of adopting the new Constitution with the exception of the Bill of Rights and Article 79 through parliament.

LAZ President George Chisanga says the development is most disturbing as it comes against the backdrop of government having recently suggested that it would take to parliament what is termed non-contentious clauses of the draft constitution for enactment.

The LAZ president said this in statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka this evening on the proposed mode of enacting the new constitution through parliament.

Mr. Chisanga said LAZ is acting with other stakeholders in the demand for a people driven constitution who have repeatedly called for the creation of a legal framework to protect both the content and process necessary for enacting a people driven constitution.

He added that the PF government is for the first time attempting to introduce a completely new constitution order which will change Zambia by sending the entire final draft constitution to parliament.

He further said government has spent colossal amounts of money on the constitution making process and has since called upon all Zambians and stakeholders to hold government accountable to its promise in this important process.

Mr Chisanga said government should act in good faith and enact the entire Constitution through the national referendum.

The Lusaka High Court has dismissed the case in which some residents of Kabwata constituency had sued the Lusaka City Council over the disposal of Stand number Lus/20435 Yotum Muleya road.

Lusaka City Council won the case in which the residents took the Council to court over the disposal of Stand number Lus/20435 Yotum Muleya road which houses a basketball and tennis court.

This is in a case in which Kabwata resident Clement Tembo sued the Council together with Wua Feng Construction Company over the disposal of the said piece of land.

In its ruling on Wednesday, August 5, 2015, the Lusaka High Court observed that the Council followed procedure in disposing of the said piece of land and dismissed the case with costs.

Stand number Lus/20435 is earmarked for development of a multi-purpose sports arena, incorporating tennis and basketball courts, a shopping mall, parkades and entertainment zones.

Former Tanzania President says Zambia is shining example to Tanzania

President Edgar Lungu has expressed concern with the culture of violence that has continued to flourish whenever there was an election in the country.

Mr Lungu said it was unfortunate that criminals were being dressed in PF regalia and deployed to Soweto market by the opposition to assault ordinary marketers conducting their business.

The President said there is a deliberate ploy to paint PF as a violent political party.

Mr. Lungu said he is saddened by the opposition’s orchestrated attempt to create lawlessness in the country leading to the 2016 general election.

The Head of State regretted that Forum for Democracy and Development president Edith Nawakwi’s irresponsible statement during her campaign in Bangweulu alleging that state agents were bent on rigging the election.

Mr Lungu regretted that dark corner meetings were being held across the country by the opposition who have since unleashed sporadic acts of violent activities where about seven Patriotic Front (PF) supporters were assaulted and Eastern Province Minister Malodzo Sichone’s vehicle was stoned.

This is according to a statement issued by President Lungu’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda.

President Lungu has since directed the police to arrest any perpetrators of violence regardless of their political affiliation.

CAF snubs Bility’s FIFA presidential bid

3

The Confederation of African Football will not endorse Liberian Musa Bility for the FIFA presidential candidacy.

Bility is one of early names to have officially put his name in the hat to run for the FIFA presidency at next years extra-ordinary congress on February 26 to replace Sepp Blatter.

CAF made its decision on Thursday during the ongoing executive committee meeting in Cairo on August 6.

“In view of the elections for the FIFA presidency scheduled for 26 February 2016, the Executive Committee also received a request from Mr. Musa Bility, president of the Liberian Football Association. The latter had the opportunity to explain the reasons that motivated his decision to run for the future election of the FIFA presidency,” CAF said in a statement.

“After a fraternal exchange, full of sincerity and cordiality, the CAF Executive Committee decided unanimously not to offer the requested support of CAF to Mr. Musa Bility, whilst wishing him luck in the continuation of his endeavour.

“To preserve the interests and unity of African football, it was agreed that Africa will give time to explore all options and decide.”

Meanwhile, CAF has unanimously proposed that its FIFA committee members Hani Abo Rida of Egypt and Constant Omari Selemani of DR Congo lead Africa’s interests on FIFA’s Task Force Reforms group.
