Award winning singer and song writer Emeli Sandi says she feels good coming back to Zambia because she feels connected to the country.

Emeli born to a Zambian Father and a British Mother says Zambia is always close to her heart.

Emeli whose album has gone seven time platinum was visiting Zambia as part of her advocacy work with Oxfam GB on a gender based campaign called ‘I care about her.’

She visited Rufunsa and Kalulushi to learn fist hand the challenges that ordinary people go through to access health services and the levels of inequality between men and women.

“The most striking was for me to seeing how real the problem is, when you read the fact sheets you take in but when you go there and see a hospital without resources that is when it hits home,” Emeli recounted.

“In Rufunsa, I met this man called Alex whose daughter had been defiled and she was willing to share her ordeal. It was so moving to see the faith and tenacity of this family and they are now ready to change the community.”

She added, “When you are then you suddenly realise that these problems are real. It is no longer us and them, we are one people. I do feel like home, I do feel connected to this country.”

Emeli who studied medicine in the UK said health is such a fundamental right and there is need to increase access to health for the poor.

“If you are not health and you don’t have a chance to heal then you can’t make any changes. Heath issues hit home with me.”

She revealed that she would start exploring possibilities of hosting a concert in aid of health services in Zambia.

Emeli also called for concerted efforts to scale up the fight against gender based violence in Zambia.

“I was quite surprised at how openly it is spoken about in Zambia. It is still an issue in the UK but it is something I have never worried about because i know my rights, letting the women know that this is unacceptable helps a lot,” she said.

And Oxfam Country Director Nellie N’yangwa said Oxfam Zambia is using a new approach to fighting gender based violence.

“We have come to realize that the fight against GBV is not only about sensitizing women about their rights, we have discovered that in some cases, the more a woman knows about her rights, the more she is battered,” Mrs N’yangwa.

She added, “Oxfam is implementing a project called I Care about Her campaign aimed at getting men involved in protecting women. We ask the men to personalize the fight against GBV by protecting every girl they come across as if she was their own daughter.”

VICE President Guy Scott has urged Zambians to avoid animosity on pertinent matters of national development especially the Constitution making process to enable the country move forward.

Dr Scott said the current animosity and lack of consensus from various stakeholders on the Constitution making process was not healthy for the country.

He said the Constitution making process was currently being used by some opposition political parties to discredit the Government.

Dr Scott was speaking in Livingstone at Zambezi Sun Hotel on Saturday night when he officiated at the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) Annual General Meeting Gala Dinner.

“If we are going to use the Constitution making process to gain political mileage by engaging in careless talks, we might as well forget about the whole process and save money.

“If there is no consensus, you may have people who don’t want to vote for a referendum on time and those are my fears and our fears as Government,” he said.

He urged LAZ to lead all stakeholders including the Government in the consensus building on the Constitution because the Association was neutral as well as highly respected and professional.

[pullquote]If we are going to use the Constitution making process to gain political mileage by engaging in careless talks, we might as well forget about the whole process and save money.[/pullquote]

“LAZ has credibility to call Zambians to come together and take an amicable basis on the Constitution making process. If we don’t build consensus, some of us may be reluctant to be part of the process,” he said.

Speaking at the same function, outgoing LAZ president, James Banda urged the Government to create room for dialogue and make the governance of Zambia a reality.

“As LAZ, we need to constantly talk to Government officials to effectively achieve what is good for the country. Our particular concerns are legal and judicial reforms which affect our professional body and the people we represent,” he said.

He urged the incoming LAZ leadership and members of the legal fraternity to jealously guard the unity the association was enjoying and maintain high standards of integrity.

Newly elected LAZ president, George Chisanga paid tribute to Mr Banda for leading the Association well during the last two years.

“Mr Banda leaves an indelible mark on the presidency of LAZ. We take the confidence bestowed in us with humility and we promise to start working immediately,” he said.

Linda Chishimba was elected as LAZ vice president while Likando Kalalaluka was elected as honorary secretary and Clement Tefeni was elected as honorary treasurer.

MUZ calls on miners at Vedantta Resources’s KCM to remain calm

THE Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has called on Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) miners to remain calm in view of the current happenings at the giant-mining firm.

MUZ general secretary Joseph Chewe said miners should not completely lose hope over the operational challenges at KCM because with necessary measures put in place, the company could still bounce back.

Mr Chewe said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that the recent uncertainty surrounding KCM and Vedantta Resources in particular should not make miners to completely lose hope.

“What is important for now is for KCM to commit itself to implementing identified measures that will help turn around the economic fortunes of the company because it is still viable,” Mr Chewe said.

He, however, said the problem facing KCM and the protests in London against Vedantta should serve Government a wake up call over the need to have some level of management control in mining operations in the country.

“If we had some management control, we could easily have avoided some of the things happening in mining companies like KCM,” he said.

Mr Chewe said the KCM situation had raised worry on MUZ because should the mine go under, its impact would affect miners.

He urged Government to continue monitoring closely the operations of KCM so that necessary measures are taken to avoid any surprises.

Vice-President Guy Scott recently said Government was closely monitoring KCM operations.

UPND attacks Nevers Mumba for saying UPND can’t win in 2016

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has urged MMD president Nevers Mumba to concentrate on quenching the fire that has currently engulfed the former ruling party as opposed to attacking innocent outsiders like the UPND.

UPND secretary general Winstone Chibwe said in an interview that Dr Mumba had enough enemies at present and should therefore concentrate rebuilding friendships.

He was reacting to Dr Mumba’s remarks in some sections of the media yesterday that UPND cannot win in 2016.

Mr Chibwe said UPND was not in contention with MMD but PF which was a party in Government.

“For us, we are not in contention with MMD but PF which is the party in Government. We can only advise Dr Mumba that he has made enough enemies so he should just concentrate on quenching the fire within his party.

“Our target at present is the PF, which is in Government but if Dr Mumba wants to fight both PF and UPND, he is welcome,” Mr Chibwe said.

He said Dr Mumba had no support from his two vice presidents and some other prominent MMD members therefore he should not go outside the MMD to destabilise other political parties.

Mr Chibwe said the UPND had no time for Dr Mumba as it was concentrating on organising the party.

He said Dr Mumba should wait for 2016 in order to know which political party was more popular in Zambia.

[pullquote]“I think it will be very complicated for UPND to find the numbers to hit 40 or 42 per cent of the vote that is needed to form government,” he said.[/pullquote]

On Friday, MMD president Nevers Mumba said that MMD had a more statistical advantage to win the 2016 general elections than UPND. R. Mumba said the UPND did not have adequate numbers to win a general election but that MMD was still popular in most regions of the country citing Northern, Muchinga, Copperbelt and North Western provinces.

“We think that of the three major political parties, MMD has more statistical chances of forming government than either PF or UPND. And I think that in the PF, you find a similar problem because of under-performance. I think MMD has enough tentacles across the country with a proper campaign that we are putting up to be able to go beyond 42 per cent of the vote,” he said,

Mumba said statistically, MMD stood as the strongest party of choice for Zambians in 2016 and that the party would go on a country-wide tour to rally support and reaffirm its commitment to the people.

“I think it will be very complicated for UPND to find the numbers to hit 40 or 42 per cent of the vote that is needed to form government,” he said.

And Dr. Mumba said he would not sit back and watch UPND destroy MMD structures in North Western Province.

“We will not sit back and watch UPND coming to convert our structures here. This is our stronghold. North Western has always been conservative. It will take 10 years for it to change to another political party. If HH Hakainde Hichilema comes here and I see that our position is threatened, that time I will even start learning Kaonde,” said Mumba as the MMD members cheered him.

He said Zambians should not try to vote UPND into power because they would regret experimenting like they were doing with the PF. According to Mumba, UPND could try to do many things to get into power but it would fail because Zambians were fed up with experimenting and wanted to go back to MMD which they knew very well.

$1billion sovereign bond issue is a risk, but bold move-Katele kalumba

Former Finance Minister Katele Kalumba has described government’s issuance of the US $1 billion sovereign bond as a risky but bold move.

Dr. Kalumba has observed that much it is a sign of confidence in the Zambian economy that the sovereign bond is said to have been oversubscribed, it is important that government through the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Zambia ensure that the bond is not hijacked by whom he has termed as peddlers of the vulture fund.

Dr. Kalumba, who was Cabinet Minister under the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) regime says government has to ensure that whatever bonds that it puts on the market must be redeemable in accordance to the rules of international financial Market.

The Former Finance Minister has proposed that the Zambia government can take stock of what happened in Asia where there was a collapse of the financial system because of same vulture funds where private companies bought public loans such bonds and wanted to redeem them on higher rates.

He says this is the part where the country ought to very careful to ensure that investments arising for the issued the US $1 billion sovereign bond are managed properly in order that such investments is able to yield outputs that will allow the country to redeem the bond.

Dr. Kalumba says this means that the country needs to invest intelligently in areas of the real economy that can catalyze productivity that will enable the country to earn foreign exchange.

He has further suggested that at this end President Michael Sata should call for a technical roundtable meeting which should be attended by officials from the Ministry of Finance, Bank of Zambia and other stakeholders from the financial sector and informal sector.

He has told Qfm news in an interview that it is this technical roundtable meeting that should discuss which sector of the real economy are not doing well so that such gaps are closed and that investments is made in areas where there will be multiplier effect in order for the country to produce enough to export to redeem back the bond.

Civil Rights Activist Brebner Changala has observed that the attack by suspected Patriotic Front(PF) cadres on United Party for National Development(UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema and his entourage in Ndola on Saturday is an unacceptable criminal act.

Mr. Changala says with such a continued trend of the suspect PF cadres attacking opposition leaders when they want to exercise their constitutional rights is a further demonstration that the ruling party has now allegedly become a militia that is violent and outside the rules of natural justice.

Mr. Changala says Mr. Hichilema like any other leader of a registered political party in the country has the right to associate, assemble and communicate and does not need permission to do so from either the Police or PF cadres.

The Civil Rights activists however notes that with such trend that PF cadres have continued to infringe on people%u2019s rights in the country has already spelled the beginning of the down fall of the ruling PF.

He says his appeal to the people of Zambia thus is for them to stop such infringements of their rights by removing the ruling PF from power.

And Mr. Changala has observed that the Zambia Police Service has also been compromised under the leadership of Stella Libongani her Deputy Solomon Jere.

Mr. Changala warned that time will come for both Ms. Libongani and Dr. Jere when they both in their individual capacity will take a stand in Court as accomplices to the crimes that are allegedly being committed while the police look on without taking any action under the PF government.

Konkola Mine Police Draw with Red Arrows

0

Red Arrows on Sunday escaped from Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe with a 2-2 draw against Konkola Mine Police in a delayed FAZ Super League match.
Midfielder Daniel Sibanda opened the scoring just after 15 minutes when he rounded up Mine Police keeper Ceaser Ndhlovu to give Arrows a lead.
Arrows could have doubled their lead had referee Jani Sikazwe not ruled out Shadreck Malambo’s 36th minute goal for offside.
Three minutes after the break Mine Police levelled matters when Chanda Mushili converted a penalty to beat keeper Ken Mumba.
Ref Sikazwe pointed to the spot after defender Benedict Chepeshi fouled Andrew Tapwila in the box.
Seven minutes later Clement Mwape put the home side in frot when he headed in Tapwila’s corner.

However Mwape turned from hero to zero when he allegedly handled in box forcing the ref to award Arrows a spot kick that was converted by veteran striker Adubelo Phiri in the 63rd minute.

Power Dynamos continue to dominate the FAZ Super Division table after escaping with a 1-0 away win over Nchanga Rangers at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe.

Nchanga left Chililabombwe in disbelief after the woodwork denied them four times in the game.

Bornwell Mwape ,on two occasions in the game#, and Patson Daka once in the first half all saw the shots come off the goal post.

Daka even had the ball in the back of the net in the 19th minute but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Power snatched the vital goal in the 45th minute when Jimmy Ndhlovu hit the target when he finished off a cross from the hard working Kennedy Mudenda.

Simonda salutes Roan after Nkana draw

Roan United coach Kaunda Simonda is relieved after his side held defending champions Nkana to a goalless draw in Saturday’s FAZ Super League match in Kitwe to pick up their first point of the season.
Simonda’s team bounced back from three straight defeats to hold Nkana in Wusakile.

He said the draw at Nkana will motivate Roan.

“I feel happy you know we have been losing in the past three matches. When we are walking in the streets it has been difficult for us you know how people talk,” Simonda said.

Nkana coach Masauso Mwale has remained confident that the winless defending champions will bounce back from the poor start.
Nkana have so far posted three consective draws.

“It is worrying but I know they (players) will come out, these are the same players who have been bringing glory to the team,” he said.

MMD In Chinsali Calls For Reconciliation And Unity In The Party

4

The MMD in Chinsali has called for reconciliation and unity in the party so that the party can go back to its glory days.

Speaking in an interview in Chinsali Muchinga Province MMD provincial chairperson Francis Bowa said the wrangles in the former ruling party will not archive anything but destroy the party.

Mr. Bowa called on the people that have been agitating for an extraordinary convention to put their selfish interest aside and show humility by asking forgiveness so that the party can move on to providing checks and balances on behalf of the public.

He called on party officials to concentrate on rebuilding the party as opposed to fighting one another which he said is not helping anyone including members of the public who would like to have an alternative party in the opposition.

Meanwhile Mr Bowa says the province is behind party president Nevers Mumba as he was given the mandate to run the party for five years and that those calling for a convention should wait for the mandate to finish.

He called on members to take advantage of the disenchantment among members of public due to the non delivery of PFs promises and recruit new members instead of fighting among themselves.

And Mr Bowa said the party will embark on a massive mobilization and recruitment of members in readiness for the 2016 elections.

He said the failure by the ruling PF to deliver on their campaign promises presents an opportunity for the former ruling party to bounce back to office.

MMD challenges Josephine Limata to resign stand on PF ticket

MMD Western province Publicity and Information Secretary David Nchengu has dared Luampa constituency MMD Member of Parliament and Western province minister Josephine Limata to resign from the former ruling party.

In an interview today, Nchengu said MMD leadership in the province shall not tolerate indiscipline and unlawful conduct within the party hierarchy and has dared Limata to resign and join the Patriotic Front and re-contest her seat to see if she is popular.

“All members of the party are subject to regulations and orders which are applicable to all who violets the provisions of the party constitution. Regulations and decisions or Acts in the manner to be detrimental to the party interests are liable for disciplinary actions regardless of their status and influence they command in the party,” said Nchengu.

Mr Nchengu added that pursuance to appendices A, disciplinary regulations of 1991(3)(a), and the authority of these laws lies on the exercise of powers of the MMD NEC which are contained under article 50(4) of the party constitution and these regulations are still in force which every member should follow with keen interest.

He said Limata’s paddling of two boats and her habit of eating with double hands has choked her and as such she should resign on moral grounds in order to pave way for genuine members who could work with the party to foster development in Luampa constituency.

Mr Nchengu has challenged Limata to be brave enough to quit MMD like the wise Members of Parliament Steven Masumba and Gabriel Namulambe who have tested their popularity and retained their seats, saying their membership in PF is unquestionable unlike herself (Limata).

He has however, requested the PF leadership to learn a lesson from the MMD as it had learnt a lesson from the UPND where Limata belonged from 2005 to 2011 of her attitude of disregarding lower organs of the party.

“I still contend that her suspension is on and already in the hands of NEC for her expulsion from the party. I urge her not to seek a court injunction over the decision of the NEC to over her case in order for her to test her popularity in Luampa constituency,” said Nchengu.

Mr Nchengu has advised all the MPs serving in PF in different portfolios to remain loyal to the party that sent them to parliament.

Recently, Limata said those who were calling for her suspension in the province were just disgruntled people who were feeling jealous as she is working well in the PF under the leadership of President Michael Sata.

PF cadres were armed with guns and machetes-HH

Hakainde Hichilema addressing the media

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has disclosed that the suspected Patriotic Front (PF) cadres that attacked his entourage and interrupted an interview he was attending at a radio station in Ndola on Saturday yesterday were armed with among other things guns and machetes.

Mr. Hichilema said that he suspects that the PF cadres whom he has referred to as being thugs may have come from Kitwe and Luanshya specifically sent to allegedly kill him.

Mr. Hichilema told Qfm news that his conviction that the said suspected PF cadres came for his life is based on the fact that even after he left the radio station to open up his party’s new office in within Ndola, the same cadres pounced again on his entourage discharging fire arms while the Police watched the ordeal.

The UPND leader has also wondered why up now the Police have not arrested any of the suspected PF cadres when they were present at both incidents when members of his party were being attacked by the suspected PF cadres.

Asked whether he was injured during the fracas, the opposition leader said that whether he was injured or not is not the issue but that what matters is the fact that members of his party were injured while they tried to defend themselves adding that the fact that they were injured he too has been injured.

He said that this is why he does not think it is necessary to file a formal complaint to the Police over the attacks as the Police were present during the two incidents.

He said that President Michael Sata is however the one to blame as it is within his powers to stop such thugarism amongst his party members if only he wanted.

Mr. Hichilema has however warned that his party members should not blamed next time if the defend themselves to same extent as their attackers would be armed.

Today’s Message: Can God See Your Faith?

6

bible
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“And when he saw their faith…”

(Luke 5:20, KJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

Do you know what moves the hand of God? This may surprise you, but God is not moved by complaining and self-pity. He’s not even moved by our needs. Yes, He is concerned about our needs; and yes, He wants to meet our needs, but we have to do our part and invite Him to work in our lives by exercising our faith.

When Jesus walked the earth, oftentimes right before He healed someone, the Bible says, “When He saw their faith…” So I ask you today, can God see your faith?

When God sees you doing everything you can to get well; when He sees you getting to work a little earlier because you really want that promotion; when He sees you bite your tongue to keep the peace in your house; when He sees you help others when you really need more help than they do; when God sees your faith, that’s when extraordinary things will begin to happen. Faith opens the door for God to move. So demonstrate your faith today and watch the hand of God move in every area of your life!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, thank You for the gift of faith. I choose today to exercise my faith and let the world see that I’m trusting You. Keep me close to You. Search my heart and remove anything that is displeasing to You. I bless You today and always in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Youths in Chinsali not benefiting from Construction Works.

3

Some Youths in Chinsali have complained of not benefiting from the construction works taking place in the Provincial Capital of Muchinga Province.

The youths said they have been moving from one construction site to another in search of employment but to no avail as most 0f the contractors doing works in the area have come with their workers.

They wondered how a contractor can bring causal workers all the way from Lusaka when a lot of youths in the area were languishing in compounds without jobs and would jump at the opportunity even if it would be just for a few months.

They further complained of nepotism were a few opportunities were available adding that their complaints to the District Commissioner fall on deaf ears as nothing has been done to reverse the situation since their complaints.

“Those who have been employed from here (Chinsali) is either related to one of the bosses or has some connection through some people he knows but what about us are suppose to die of hunger because we don’t have relatives to help us get a job in these companies,” complained Jackson Chanda who spoke on behalf of the youths.

They further said even the Chinese Companies have come with their own people to do jobs which should be done by locals and wondered what their benefits are when they can not even get simple jobs.

The Youths had intended to meet opposition MMD leader Nevers Mumba but scampered away for fear of being lynched by PF cadres who had gone to disrupt an indoor meeting which the opposition leader was having.

SACCORD counsels Government on terminal benefits for dismissed nurses

Graduates dancing in Mpika during the 8th combined
graduation ceremony for Chilonga and Kasama Schools of Nursing and
Midwives which was held at Chilonga Mission School of Nursing.A total
of 94 nurses graduated.

Government has been commended for its commitment of ensuring that the nurses that were dismissed last year after staging an illegal strike get their jobs back.

Among government officials that have repeatedly urged the dismissed nurses to re-apply to get their jobs back is Permanent Secretary to the Cabinet Anne Sinyangwe who has recently further implored the fired nursed across the country to consider re-applying for their jobs.

And the Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD), one of the civil society organizations that have commended government’s gesture has further called on it to act quickly in reinstating the jobless nurses once they have re-applied.

Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says government’s quick action to reinstate the nurses once they re-apply will demonstrate its commitment of sustaining job creation in the country.

Mr. Cheembe has also advised government to seriously put into consideration the concern that has been raised that some of the dismissed nurses may not get their terminal benefits they have already worked for even after they have been reinstated.

He says government should consider putting up measures to ensure the targeted dismissed nurses that are said may not receive their terminal benefits do get their benefits in full keeping it in mind that some of the fires nurses have only less than three before they could retire from public service.

The SACCORD Executive Director says putting up such measures will act as motivation for the dismissed nurses to re-apply for their lost jobs.

He has told Qfm news that it is for this reason that his organization is of the position that government considers the issue of terminal benefits of the jobless nurses seriously once they have been reinstated as the men and women in white uniforms have diligently served the nation.
