Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda says the recently oversubscribed bond is proof that international investors have confidence in the Zambian economy.

Mr. Chikwanda has also observed that the oversubscribed bond is an indication that government is on the right track and has the confidence of key stakeholders.

The Minister was speaking in Washington DC when he and his Local Government and Housing counterpart Emmanuel Chenda has called on Zambia’s Ambassador to the US, Palan Mulonda.

And Mr Chenda says his mission to the high level meeting on water and sanitation in Washington DC was to share and learn from the best practices especially those on the African continent.

This is according to a statement issued by First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Zambian embassy in Washington DC, Patricia Littiya.

Meanwhile, the Economic Association of Zambia -EAZ- has welcomed Zambia’s successful issuance of a 1-Billion US dollars second sovereign bond on the international capital market.

EAZ president Isaac Ngoma however says though the country needs the money, the bond has come at a higher cost compared to the 7-hundred and 50 million US dollar bond which the government successfully issued in 2012.

Mr. Ngoma notes that there is need therefore to sustain the repayment of the bond on time and that government must state exactly how the money will be used.

The EAZ president was speaking on Kwacha Good Morning Zambia programme on ZNBC television on Saturday.

Acting Finance Minister, Edgar Lungu on Tuesday said like the first sovereign bond of September 2012, the second bond has been a resounding success and was oversubscribed.

In a statement to ZNBC, Mr. Lungu said the move is an expression and affirmation of the confidence the international investor community has in Zambia.

Mr Lungu says the bond proceeds will be injected into growth-prompting projects in various critical sectors of the economy, such as the transport and energy sectors.

A sovereign bond is a debt or loan issued by a country.

Warriors supporters riot

Kitwe referee Gladys Lengwe was on Saturday forced to abandon the FAZ Super League Week 4 match between Kabwe Warriors and Choma Green Eagles 20 minutes from time when home fans rioted at Godffrey Chitalu Stadium.
Eagles coach Justin Chinama confirmed that the match was called-off at the time his side was leading 2-0.
Warriors supporters are reported to have pelted assorted missiles on the pitch after Eagles scored their second goal in Kabwe.
The irate fans directed their missiles at club head coach Wesley Mondo whose side has collected only one point from the opening three matches.
Adamson Mulao opened the scoring after 50 minutes before Junior international Spencer Sautu doubled Eagles’ lead on 69 minutes.

This match will now be referred to the FAZ disciplinary committee.

“We were leading 2-0 when the match was called-off so we are hoping for the best. We have no problem with what happened,” Chinama said

Equally Eagles came into this match with one point from the opening three games.

Nkana fail to impress against Roan

2

Nkana continue to blow hot and cold in the 2014 FAZ Super League season after drawing 0-0 at home against Roan United at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

The draw was their third straight scoreless draw since the season started and have now amassed three points from as many games played with a match in hand.

Saturday’s result on the other hand was good news for Roan who picked up their first point of the season after three successive defeats since the season began on March 15.

Meanwhile, Nkana had two great opportunities to walk away with the three points in the first half when Evans Kangwa fired his free kick on the woodwork in the 8th minute.

Four minutes before halftime Ronald Kampamba failed to convert a penalty after shooting his spot kick straight at ex-Power Dynamos goalkeeper Evans Mwewa.

Roan gave Nkana a late scare in the 90th minute when Victor Kashitu thumped his shot off the beam before the final whistle put an end to what was lethargic display by the 2013 champions.

Nkana moved from 11th to 9th while Roan lead from 16t to 12th after four games played.

Assembly rally to shock disappointed Indeni

1

Promoted National Assembly on Saturday came from behind to stun Indeni 2-1 in a FAZ Super League match at Nkana Stadium.
Two late goals from veterans stanley Banda and Timothy Mbewe were enough to stir Assembly to their second straight win.
After a goalless first half, Indeni went up two minutes after the restart when Dodo Kayombo pounced on a lose ball to shake the net with a long range shot.
Indeni thought they were heading for a win before Indeni equalised via a Banda free kick from the edge of the box in the 83rd minute.
Assembly’s winner came three minutes later when Mbewe tapped in from close range to beat keeper Humphrey Mwenya.

Another highlight in the action packed second half saw Indeni coach Stephen Mwansa sent to the stands by referee Francis Lombe for alleged delaying antics.
After Saturday’s win, Assembly moves to eight points while winless Indeni remain stuck on one point after round four matches being played this weekend.

Reports from Copperbelt Province indicate that unruly cadres from the ruling Patriotic Front have forced UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to abandon an interview at Ndola’s Sun FM.

The UPND leader was appearing on radio program but the PF cadres demanded that he leaves the station because of allegedly insulting republican president Michael Sata.

The cadres forced the opposition leader to abandon the program and was whisked away while the police watched hopelessly as they were asked not to intervene in matter.

The cadres further warned the police officers to stay away from them as they sort out the opposition leader or risk being transferred to rural areas.

The UPND leader is in the Copperbelt Province to mobilize the party.

The Zambia Congress Trade Unions (ZCTU) says it is deeply concerned with recent remarks by President Micheal Sata on the constitution.

ZCTU President Leonard Hikaumba has told QFM News that it is unfortunate that the Head of State is coming out so negative about the new constitution.

Mr. Hikaumba says President Sata himself promised the Zambian people a new constitution, wondering what has necessitated the change of heart on the issue.

He says Zambians want a constitution which will be in tandem with their aspirations.

Mr Hikaumba says the best government can do is to complete the constitution making process considering that the process has already gobbled huge amounts of money.

He adds that President Micheal Sata knew from the beginning that the current constitution needed to be replaced.

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema confers with Alliance for Better Zambia leader Father Frank Bwalya

Alliance for Better Zambia (ABZ) President Father Frank Bwalya fears that the patriotic front government will leave the country with a huge debt by the time they leave power going by their borrowing habit.

Fr bwalya says the PF government has continued to borrow heavily with the hope of impressing the Zambian people, following their alleged failure to fulfill the many promises made to the people.

Father Bwalya adds that is clear that the pf government has serious fiscal policy problems because of their failure to listen to advice from economic experts.

He stresses that tHe continued reckless borrowing by government will lead the country into a debt trap.

The ABZ leader has since stated that the patriotic front should start preparing for their exit in 2016.

PF government is recklessly over borrowing, Zambia’s debt to hit $11 billion by end of 2014-Dr Mumba

MMD President Dr Nevers Mumba has declared that the PF government is a reckless, irresponsible and immoral government that has led Zambia into a debt crisis.

Dr Mumba revealed that the PF government will by the end of 2014 push Zambia’s total debt stock to around US$ 11 billion.

He explained that the PF government had borrowed 3.5 billion US$ dollars as at March 2014 at the expense of Zambians.

Dr Mumba further explained that the recently obtained US$ 1 billion second sovereign bond has pushed the country’s external debt stock to $ 4.5 billion.

The MMD leader was speaking in Solwezi Friday when he addressed scores of MMD supporters that welcomed him at Solwezi Airport.

Dr Mumba was in the area to witness the installation of MMD councilors Ezekiel Mulonga and Brian Kajoba as Solwezi Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively.

He said the Ministry of Finance website shows that the current domestic debt stood at 3.5 billion domestic debt as at March 2014.

“We know that this government is also heavily borrowing from the domestic market and crowing out the market. On a monthly basis, it is borrowing K250 million (dollar equivalent) and would have borrowed an additional US$ 3 billion domestically by end of 2014,” Dr Mumba stated.

He added, “What is even more shocking is the rate at which the country’s debt stock is swelling. Within two years of the PF, the country’s debt stock has bulged due to excessive appetite for debt. This government is reckless and just thinking of eating today.”

Dr Mumba explained that the MMD inherited a debt of slightly over six billion from UNIP government in 1991 which was contracted over a long period of years.

“When the MMD government came in, it received a lot of good will from the international community. Everyone was lining up to lend money to Zambia but due to its prudency.

The MMD government never went out soliciting to borrow but financial agencies were lining up offering funds for borrowing but the government elected to exercise prudent management and only dealt with multilateral lending institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank with favourable repayment conditions.”

Dr Mumba stated, “The PF has shown dangerous appetite for borrowing. At the rate they are going, this government could borrow from everyone willing to lend. We are watching their steps closely in Lusaka because they may end up borrowing from Katondo Street. PF is borrowing from anyone who has money to lend.”

Dr Mumba said the PF government’s debt policy is unacceptably reckless and might plunge the country into serious problems.

“This behavior by the PF government is unacceptable. The PF is behaving like that frog that over eats such that it dies immediately after it gets full. It never worries about tomorrow, all it does is eat, eat and eat until it dies.”

Dr Mumba said the PF government behaving like that frog that never considers the consequences for tomorrow and the equity of the nation.

“They are now saying Zambia’s asset value in terms of national productivity is around US$ 25 billion dollars according to the revised GDP estimates which will are disputing because it is an over statement. The true value of our economy is around US$ 18 and 21 billion but what is even more important to consider is that the PF government has now borrowed above half of our equity which is criminal. Any financial manager will tell you that borrowing above half of your equity is criminal.”

Meanwhile, Dr Mumba also charged that the wealth generated from the North western province is being mismanaged.

Dr Mumba said the PF government is creating conditions that are making it difficult for residents of North western province to benefit from the minerals mined in their area.

He promised that the MMD will ensure that Northwestern province develops socially and economically when it gets back to power.

And Dr Mumba has urged the church in Zambia to actively participate in the economic activities of the country.

He also called for leadership of integrity in politics in order to position Zambia towards a path of social and economic development.

Chipata Bishop warns Priests against taking a partisan stance during their work

11

CHIPATA Catholic Diocese Auxiliary Bishop Benjamin Phiri has warned priests against showing their partisan stance during their vocational work.

Bishop Phiri said during chrism mass held at St Annes Cathedral Parish in Chipata on Thursday that priests should stop showing their support for any political party.

The prelate said in a mass presided by Chipata Catholic Diocese Bishop George Lungu that priests have a duty to preach words of peace and unity to the nation and not steer up confusion among the people.

“As priests, you have a big role to play during your pastoral or vocational work to the Christians. Do not show which political party you are supporting and please you should handle your political matter inside your heart because once you show, you will divide the Christians,” Bishop Phiri said.

The bishop said priests should always know that the pulpit was there to assist people to understand the Word of God instead of being turned into political tool.

Bishop Phiri said any priest should work as a worker for Jesus Christ.

He said priests were ordained to evangelize the Word of God to the masses as enshrined in the Bible not to be involved in politics.

The bishop said rumour mongering among the Christians towards priests should be avoided.

He said rumour mongering towards priests from Christians was detrimental to the evangelization the Word of God.

He said Christians should not become an obstacle to the priests vocational work.

“You (Christians) you should not become an obstacle to the work of a priest but let us assist that particular priest to execute the work of God in any community,” Bishop Phiri said.

Bishop Phiri also advised media houses not to be biased in their reporting.

He said journalists needed to be honest and balanced in their reporting.

He said it was saddening that some journalists were causing misunderstandings with the way they were reporting their news.

“Journalists should not be fanning misunderstandings with bad reporting and let us be fair enough by balancing your news item,” Bishop Phiri said.

He said in most cases, journalists were agitating the fight due to unfair reporting.

ZCTU questions Government’s commitment towards revising labour laws

ZCTU president Leonard Hikaumba

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has questioned government’s commitment towards revising labour laws in the country.

ZCTU president Leonard Hikaumba said government through the Ministry Labour has continued saying existing labour laws are under review but wondered who is reviewing them when the labour movement as a social partner has been left out.

“We shall continue propounding on the need to have revised labour laws. Our Labour ministry has been saying this process is on going, as social partners we wonder who is dealing with that process if we are not involved?,” questioned Mr Hikaumba.

“Our worry is more than 2years down the line of the new government we do not have these revised labour laws and the question is what is the government doing? We need to have these new laws, we should no longer continue lamenting about the poor labour laws when every thing is within the reach of government,” he said.

And Mr Hikaumba said the labour movement is facing numerous challenges due to the changes in the market forces which is affecting the workers negatively.

“We are facing raising unemployment levels, reduced social security provisions, job loses as a result of company closures or relocations and the aggressive challenges brought about because of neo-liberal policies,”

He said the challenges are having an adverse impact on employment relations in the country such as casuallization which has become rife in the country.

Mr Hikaumba said this when he officiated at the launch of the Meanwood General Insurance new legal expense insurance product for the trade union

And the labour movement leader said unions should start exploring new ways of dealing with the challenges.

He further commended Meanwood General Insurance for providing an opportunity to the movement for them to forge ahead in their quest for better working conditions.

Mwale issues Nkana battle cry

0

Nkana coach Masauso Mwale has issued a battle cry for the defending champions to show championship character on Saturday when they host troubled Roan United in Kitwe.

The 2013 champions have failed to spark in the league so far after two games played with another two matches in hand.

Nkana are currently 11th with two points after picking up scoreless draws away to Green Eagles and Napsa Stars.

Moreover, the side has failed to win a competitive game since March 8 let alone score any goals in 360 minutes of action.

Nkana trace their last goal, and win, to their 2-1 away win over KCCA of Uganda in a CAF Champions League first round, return leg match in Kampala exactly a month ago.

“We give respect to Roan, they are a good team, but just we need to be on top of things,” Nkana coach Masauso Mwale said.

“We have to play for a positive result so that we can start accumulating the points that will help us to defend the league title.”

Roan too are under pressure and lie bottom of the table with zero points from three games played.

Ronald Kampamba set for Nkana return

0

Nkana striker Ronald Kampamba has been certified fit to face Roan United this Saturday in a FAZ Super Division Week Four game at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

The 2013 top scorer on 18 goals has been out of action since returning from Egypt on March 30 with Nkana.

Kampamba limped off with a hamstring injury just after 50 minutes played in Nkana’s 5-0 loss away to Zamalek in Cairo two weeks ago in a CAF Champions League last 16 final leg tie.

“He has been able to train fully and I think he is well,” Nkana coach Masauso Mwale confirmed.

“I am very, very happy because he is an important player in the team.”

Kampamba ‘s return means Mwale attacking worries have been eased as Nkana head into their first home league game of the season.

Simukonda warns Power

3

Nchanga Rangers coach Fighton Simukonda has cautioned FAZ Super League leaders Power Dynamos against complaisance as they meet his side on Sunday.

Nchanga and Power clash in the 13h00 kickoff match at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe before Konkola Mine Police face Red Arrows to complete the Sunday doubleheader.

Power have made a perfect start to the season – recording three straight victories to amass nine points.

“Every team in the Premier League is strong and everyone wants to win the league, equally we want to win the league,” Simukonda said.

The Chingola side is smarting from a 3-1 defeat at Zesco United in the last fixture while Power clashed Konkola Mine Police 6-0 at the weekend.

“We lost on Saturday and they won but if they relax too bad we will be at them,” he said.

Nchanga are fifth on the table with six points from three matches.

Government has called on Church Mother bodies to strictly scrutinize Pastors in the country in order to protect unsuspecting members of the public from imposters.

Speaking during the official opening of the Inter denominational national Pastors workshop in Lusaka today, Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Ngosa Simbyakula said government is aware of some churches that are not compliant with the requirement of laws such as submitting annual returns with the Registrar of Societies.

Dr. Simbyakula said government is also aware of some church leaders that have tarnished the image of the church by conducting themselves at variance with the Christian teachings.

Dr. Simbyakula added that government attaches great importance to the partnership with the church in resolving various social challenges the people face.

He said the church has always been a source of hope, solace, a mirror of good morals and unity for any community of people.

Dr. Simbyakula has since appealed to church leaders to preach peace, unity and love to the people and members of the various congregations.

Opposition Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD) Leader Nevers Mumba says he will now embark on an aggressive party mobilization campaign ahead of the 2016 elections following the failure by senior party members who were seeking to oust him to garner the necessary two thirds required to convene an extraordinary convention.

Dr. Mumba says he will work towards uniting the former ruling party to ensure the party bounces back to power in 2016.

Dr. Mumba has told QFM News in a telephone interview that he is embarking on a countrywide party mobilization exercise to ensure the party becomes stronger.

Dr. Mumba says it is his desire to see the former ruling party bounce back to power and continue serving the Zambian people where they had left from in 2011.

He expresses confidence that the MMD will make history by becoming the first party to bounce back to power after being in the opposition for one term.
