Chief Chikwanda hails Mphezeni’s selfless service

Chief Chikwanda of the Bemba people in Mpika District in Muchinga Province says the late Paramount Chief Mphezeni will be greatly remembered for his selfless leadership style he provided to Eastern Province and the nation at large.

Chief Chikwanda has described the paramount Chief as a distinguished traditional leader who made significant contributions towards promoting peace, unity and co-existence among all Zambians.

Chief Chikwanda said this in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) at his palace in Mpika.

He said Mpika District has joined the rest of the nation in mourning the passing of Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province, saying his demise is a great loss that has been deeply felt across provincial boundaries.

Chief Chikwanda said the country has lost a respected traditional leader whose dedication to national development, social cohesion and welfare of his subjects will be greatly missed by fellow chiefs, government and ordinary citizens.

He said Chief Mphezeni was a pillar of traditional governance who consistently used his position to champion the rights of his people while at the same time supporting national programmes aimed at improving the lives of all Zambians.

Chief Chikwanda further noted that the late Chief Mphezeni was particularly exemplary in the manner in which he collaborated with government institutions, civil society and fellow traditional leaders to resolve disputes and foster harmony among communities.

” In Eastern Province and beyond,

I call on all traditional leaders to draw inspiration from the late chief’s leadership.” He said,

And Mpika District Commissioner David Siame said the late Paramount Chief Mphezeni leaves behind a legacy worthy of emulation, adding that his passing marks a significant moment of loss for traditional leadership in Zambia.

Mr Siame said Chief Mphezeni greatly contributed to Zambia’s development in various areas, including agriculture, education and the promotion of cultural heritage.

The DC expressed condolences on behalf of the people and administration of Mpika District to the Ngoni Royal Establishment and the people of Eastern Province and the nation as a whole.

Meanwhile, some residents of Mpika District who share tribal roots with the Ngoni people of Eastern Province highlighted the strong bond that exists between the Bemba and Ngoni people, noting that the two communities have long maintained ties of friendship, intermarriage and mutual respect that transcend geographic boundaries.

“We join our Ngoni friends in grief and expressed hope that the Ngoni Royal Establishment would identify a worthy successor to continue the great legacy that Paramount Chief Mphezeni has left behind,” he said

A passenger has died after falling from a moving motorbike in Lusangazi District.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed and identified the deceased as 18- year-old Spanela Banda of Mudonsa Village, Sandwe Chiefdom.

The fatal road traffic accident occurred on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at around 15:30 hours.

According to Police, Banda was travelling as a pillion passenger on an unregistered Gatoma motorcycle ridden by Lottie Mwale of Pelekani Village.

The motorcycle was travelling from north to south when the accident occurred.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim fell from the moving motorcycle and sustained serious injuries while the rider escaped unhurt.

“The motorcycle did not sustain any visible damage, “Mr Mweemba said.

He added that the victim suffered a cut at the back of the head, bleeding from the nose and suspected internal injuries.

Constitutional Court sets June 19 hearing for HH candidature challenge

The full bench of the Constitutional Court has set June 19, 2026, as the hearing date for a petition filed by UPND founder Charles Longwe, who is challenging President Hakainde Hichilema’s candidature in the August 13 general election.

The hearing date was confirmed following a scheduling conference held before Constitutional Court Judge Martin Musaluke. Lawyers representing both parties attended the proceedings, after which the court indicated that a judgment date would be announced following the hearing.

State Counsel Mulambo Haimbe, a member of President Hichilema’s legal team, confirmed the June 19 hearing date. Advocate Michael Moono, who is also representing the President, said the court would determine the judgment timetable after hearing submissions from the parties.

In his petition, Charles Longwe argues that the UPND did not hold a valid convention before nominating President Hichilema as its presidential candidate on May 22, 2026. He contends that the party’s constitution requires a convention to be held before a presidential candidate can be adopted.

The petition names President Hakainde Hichilema, the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the Registrar of Societies and the Attorney General as respondents.

Longwe is seeking a declaration that the acceptance of President Hichilema’s candidature by the Electoral Commission of Zambia was unconstitutional, unlawful and void.

The case comes less than two months before Zambians vote in the August 13 general election. The Constitutional Court is expected to hear arguments from both sides on June 19 before determining the next stage of the matter.

A decision by the court will determine whether the challenge proceeds or whether President Hichilema’s candidature remains unaffected by the issues raised in the petition.

Projected bumper harvest elates agriculture union

The Agriculture, Technical and Professional Staff Union of Zambia (ATPSUZ) has commended the government for the country’s anticipated bumper maize harvest of approximately five million metric tonnes (mt) for the 2025/2026 farming season.

ATPSUZ General Secretary Stephen Meleki has described the achievement as a major milestone towards strengthening national food security and economic growth.

In an interview with the media, Mr Meleki said the expected record harvest demonstrates that with the right policies, strategic investments and adequate support to farmers, Zambia can significantly increase agricultural productivity.

He added the ambitious target of producing 10 million metric tonnes of maize, three million metric tonnes of soybeans and one million metric tonnes of wheat, annually by 2030.

He expressed gratitude to the government and praised the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema for prioritising agriculture as a key driver of Zambia’s economy.

And the ATPSUZ General Secretary stressed that it remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that advance Zambia’s agricultural sector and contribute to long-term economic transformation.

“Together, we can build a food-secure and prosperous Zambia through enhanced agricultural mechanisms,” he said.

Last week, Zambia Statistics Agency Statistician General Sheila Mudenda projected a maize production for the 2025/2026 farming season to stand at 4.9 million metric tonnes, translating an increase of 27.8 percent from the previous farming season.

Kwacha Strengthens, Breaks Below K18 Per US Dollar

Zambia’s kwacha enters K17 bracket as copper, harvest and debt reforms support gains

THE Zambian kwacha has broken through the K18 mark to trade firmly within the K17 bracket, recording its strongest performance since 2023 as increased foreign exchange inflows from mining, a bumper agricultural harvest and improved debt management continue to support the local currency.

At commercial banks and bureaux de change across Lusaka on Wednesday, the kwacha traded between K17.65 and K17.91 against the United States dollar. The Bank of Zambia’s indicative rate stood between K17.91 and K17.96, while Kasinja Bureau recorded buying and selling rates of K17.70 and K18.00 respectively. Golden Coin Bureau reported similar rates.

The Bank of Zambia says the currency appreciated by 14.8 percent against the dollar during the first quarter of 2026, with gains extending into April and May. The performance has placed the kwacha among the stronger-performing currencies in the region this year.

Economic stakeholders attribute the appreciation to stronger export earnings, improved foreign exchange liquidity and positive macroeconomic developments across several sectors.

Bureau de Change Association of Zambia president Kalumba said the projected maize harvest of nearly five million tonnes could reduce maize imports while creating export opportunities that generate additional foreign exchange earnings.

“This means Zambia will not need to import maize and can instead export the surplus, bringing in foreign exchange,” Mr Kalumba said. “When you produce more and export, you earn forex, which strengthens the currency.”

The mining sector has also contributed significantly to foreign currency inflows. Recent data shows mining companies recorded net foreign exchange sales of US$626 million, while tax remittances reached US$289.7 million, bringing total foreign exchange liquidity from the sector to US$915.7 million. This represents an increase from US$759.4 million recorded in the previous quarter.

Foreign financial institutions added a further US$542.3 million to the market, helping lift net foreign exchange supply to US$230.2 million from US$93.4 million previously.

The broader economy has also shown signs of improvement. Zambia’s gross domestic product has grown from about US$18 billion in 2021 to US$29 billion in 2025, with projections placing output at US$41 billion in 2026. Inflation has eased from recent highs, supporting overall economic stability.

Market sentiment has received further support from Government’s US$1.36 billion Eurobond buyback programme, financed through a US$600 million facility from the African Development Bank and domestic resources. The Capital Markets Association of Zambia described the initiative as an important step towards debt sustainability and long-term fiscal management.

Kalumba said the programme had strengthened market confidence by signalling continued commitment to debt management reforms and fiscal discipline.

ZANACO’s treasury newsletter reported that the kwacha recently strengthened from an opening rate of K18.15 to close at K17.95, citing sustained foreign exchange supply and relatively subdued demand. The Bank of Zambia has also conducted open market operations amounting to K1.18 billion to support liquidity conditions.

Economist Noel Nkoma welcomed the gains but cautioned that exchange-rate movements remain subject to market conditions. He said stronger macroeconomic indicators, rising copper production and increased investor participation in government securities had supported the recent appreciation.

“Citizens should take advantage of the kwacha appreciation and engage in investment partnerships,” Mr Nkoma said.

ZANACO Chief Executive Officer Maikwandi Chibesakunda said the combination of a strong harvest and efforts to raise annual copper production to three million tonnes presents opportunities for business growth and export expansion. She noted that China remains Zambia’s largest trading partner and a key destination for copper exports valued at about US$3 billion.

Not all sectors have benefited equally from the stronger currency. Millers Association of Zambia president Andrew Chintala said kwacha appreciation had reduced the competitiveness of Zambian mealie-meal exports, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where prices currently range between US$12 and US$14 per 50-kilogram bag. He added that transport costs continue to affect access to East African markets.

Kalumba said external developments remain a factor to watch, noting that geopolitical tensions and movements in global oil prices could influence future exchange-rate performance. Sustained gains, he said, will depend on favourable international conditions and continued strength in key sectors of the economy.

Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Finance Jito Kayumba said the currency’s performance reflected broader economic reforms that have contributed to stronger reserves and increased economic stability. He linked the gains to progress recorded in agriculture, mining, energy and fiscal management.

For consumers, a stronger kwacha has the potential to reduce the cost of imported goods and services priced in foreign currency. At a national level, exchange-rate stability can ease pressure on foreign debt obligations, support fiscal planning and improve confidence in the economy.

The durability of the gains will depend on export performance, agricultural output, copper production, global commodity prices and the success of ongoing debt management measures. For now, the currency’s movement into the K17 bracket reflects growing support from sectors that have become increasingly important drivers of Zambia’s economic recovery.

Government Warns Against Sharing Fake AI Video of Edgar Lungu

The Government has warned members of the public against creating, sharing, or distributing an alleged artificial intelligence (AI)-generated video purportedly showing former President Edgar Lungu undergoing a post-mortem examination.

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana says authorities are aware of individuals allegedly producing and circulating the video in an attempt to provoke public emotions and influence the electoral process ahead of the August 13 General Elections.

Mr. Kawana urged those responsible to consider the feelings of the late former President’s family and close associates, describing the content as distressing, insensitive, and inappropriate.

He warned that the dissemination of false and manipulated content has the potential to mislead the public, fuel tensions, and undermine national unity during the election period.

Commenting on the ongoing political campaigns, Mr. Kawana said claims from some quarters that the campaigns appear dull are largely due to the absence of violence, illicit spending, and other activities often associated with the misuse of public resources.

He stated that opposition political parties have failed to present a clear message to voters or offer alternatives to government programmes and services currently being implemented across the country.

Mr. Kawana further attributed the peaceful political atmosphere to prudent management of national resources and what he described as strong and effective leadership under the current administration.

He added that the 2026 electoral period is likely to be among the most peaceful in Zambia’s history, urging all stakeholders to continue promoting peace, responsible conduct, and issue-based campaigns.

The Permanent Secretary also called on citizens to verify information before sharing it online and to avoid spreading content that could cause unnecessary distress or misinformation.

Mpezeni IV Returns Home as Ngoni Nation Prepares for Final Farewell

The body of Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV is expected to arrive in Chipata today as thousands of mourners gather to pay their last respects to the revered Ngoni monarch whose 44-year reign ended last week.

According to the Ngoni Royal Establishment, the late traditional leader’s remains will be flown from Lusaka and are expected to arrive in Chipata at approximately 12:00 hours. Upon arrival, the body will be transported to Ephendukeni Palace, where it will lie in state ahead of burial on Tuesday.

Speaking at Ephendukeni Palace, Gogo Madzimawe confirmed that the remains are currently under the custody of the Ngoni Royal Establishment through Chief Maguya and the royal indunas.

“It is going to be a one-hour flight into Chipata. From there, the body will be brought here at Ephendukeni Palace,” Madzimawe said.

He also urged the public to ignore false information circulating on social media regarding funeral arrangements and succession matters, describing such reports as malicious and misleading during a period of mourning.

Paramount Chief Mpezeni IV died in the early hours of Saturday at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka. His death was announced by Senior Chief Nzamane, who described the passing as a profound loss to the Ngoni people and the nation at large.

Born David Njengembazo Jele, Mpezeni IV ascended to the throne in 1982 following the death of his father, Mpezeni III. Before becoming king, he lived in Efeni Village in Chipata and worked in Livingstone, unaware that he would one day inherit one of Zambia’s most influential traditional leadership positions.

His coronation, attended by Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda, marked the beginning of a reign that would span more than four decades.

Throughout his leadership, Mpezeni IV became a respected custodian of Ngoni culture and traditions. He is widely remembered for strengthening the Ncwala Traditional Ceremony, transforming it into one of Zambia’s most celebrated traditional events that attracts visitors from across the region and beyond.

His influence extended beyond Zambia’s borders. He maintained strong ties with traditional and political leaders across Southern Africa and was among distinguished African traditional leaders invited to witness the coronation of Misuzulu kaZwelithini in South Africa in 2022. He also hosted prominent figures, including Jacob Zuma, during various Ncwala ceremonies.

The late Paramount Chief leaves behind a wife, a child, grandchildren, and a lasting legacy of cultural preservation, unity, and traditional leadership.

As the Ngoni nation prepares to lay him to rest, tributes continue to pour in from across Zambia and the wider region, reflecting the deep respect and admiration he commanded throughout his lifetime.

President Hichilema to sign five bills today

1

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema is expected today to assent to five Bills at State House in Lusaka, a move that will place free education and major pension reforms into law and affect workers, retirees and learners across the country.

The signing ceremony, scheduled to coincide with the President’s 64th birthday, will cover the Education (Amendment) Bill 2026, National Pension Scheme Bill 2026, Public Service Pensions Bill 2026, Pension Scheme Regulation (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Local Authorities Superannuation Bill 2026. All five Bills were passed during the immediate past sitting of Parliament.

State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka said the legislation would secure key gains made in education and worker welfare while extending benefits to future generations.

“From the classroom to the workplace to a secure retirement, this is delivery that touches the life of every Zambian,” Mr Hamasaka said.

Among the measures contained in the pension reforms is an increase in the minimum monthly pension from K1,861 to K2,327. More than 17,000 pensioners are expected to benefit from the adjustment once the reforms take effect.

The reforms will also allow about 30,000 retirees to access advance lump-sum payments, with some beneficiaries expected to receive up to K17,500. Government officials say the payments are intended to provide additional financial flexibility for retirees and their families.

A further 1.2 million members of the National Pension Scheme Authority are expected to benefit from an increase in the income replacement ratio from 40 percent to 45 percent of pensionable earnings.

The reforms also provide for an increase in funeral grants from K18,618 to K23,272, a measure aimed at easing funeral-related expenses faced by families.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe said the reforms recognise the contribution made by workers who have spent decades serving the country.

“Behind every one of those numbers is a person,” Mr Haimbe wrote in a column published ahead of the expected signing ceremony.

He said the reforms would benefit teachers, nurses, council workers and many others who had dedicated their working lives to public service and national development.

The Education (Amendment) Bill 2026 seeks to place the Government’s free education policy into law. The programme was introduced administratively in January 2022 and has since become one of the administration’s flagship social policies.

Mr Hamasaka said about 2.6 million children had returned to school following the introduction of free education.

He said the legislation would provide long-term protection for the programme and require any future changes to pass through Parliament.

Mr Haimbe said the school feeding programme, which currently serves about 4.7 million learners, complements free education by helping improve school attendance and learner welfare.

The signing of the Bills comes less than ten weeks before the August 13 general election, where education and social protection policies are expected to feature prominently in campaign discussions.

Special Assistant to the President for Investment and Finance Jito Kayumba said Zambia had recorded progress in agriculture, debt restructuring and macroeconomic management, and urged citizens to safeguard those gains.

“We have the biggest harvest in the history of our country this year, close to five million tonnes of maize. We did it on food, we did it on the dollar, we did it on the debt. We can’t go back,” Mr Kayumba said.

Leadership Movement presidential candidate Dr Richard Silumbe offered a different interpretation of the free education programme.

Dr Silumbe said free education had existed under previous administrations in different forms, arguing that successive governments had maintained or expanded access over the years.

He said his administration would seek to extend free education to tertiary level if elected. The five Bills expected to be signed today cover education, pensions and retirement benefits, affecting citizens from school-going age through to retirement.

The Lusaka Times News Team joins many Zambians in wishing President Hakainde Hichilema a happy 64th birthday and good health .

FAZ expels Crown from Central Provincial League

0

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has expelled Central Provincial Division One side Crown Football Club from the league for allegedly failing to fulfil fixtures.

FAZ Central Province General Secretary Maxwell Shaba said Crown have been relegated to district league where they will be admitted upon settling penalty fees.

Shaba said Crown were among teams that have been failing to fulfil fixtures.

He said Crown caused a walkover at their home ground during a week 31 fixture against Mumbwa Skills Rangers Football Club.

“One of the Objectives of the Central Province FAZ is to make the league competitive and keep rescheduled games to a minimum,” Shaba said in a memo accessed by Lusaka Times Sports.

“It is greatly regrettable that some teams have failed to fulfil their fixtures without any proper reason and in some instances, multiple walkovers caused,” he said.

Crown is based in Nampundwe, Shibuyunji District.

“To keep this in check, actions tabulated in the above-mentioned MEMO have been invoked. As such, Crown Football Club is out of the League forthwith and have been relegated to district leagues where they will be admitted upon settling penalty fees,” Shaba said.

The club is yet to comment on the matter.

Crown are expected to contest the expulsion.

Police warns perpetrators of political violence

North-Western Province Police Commissioner, Brighton Siwale has directed Police Officers across the province to act firmly and professionally against perpetrators of political violence and public disorder.

Speaking during a media engagement meeting on election preparedness organised by the North-West Press Club in Solwezi, Mr Siwale said the Police Service in North-Western Province will not condone any form of lawlessness before, during and after the elections.

He emphasized that political violence poses a serious threat to the country’s democratic governance, national unity, economic stability and international reputation.

Mr Siwale noted that violence erodes public confidence in institutions, weakens democratic legitimacy and creates fear and instability within communities, a situation that could also discourage potential investors.

He further disclosed that Police in the province has developed and operationalised an electoral security plan aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

Mr Siwale stated that the plan focuses on preventing electoral violence through proactive policing, intelligence gathering and timely interventions among other measures.

Meanwhile, Provincial Permanent Secretary, Grandson Katambi reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting the rights and safety of journalists.

Col. Katambi (Rtd) urged media practitioners to uphold professionalism, ethics and accuracy in their reporting before, during and after the elections, warning against the spread of misinformation.

And North-West Press Club president, Chaibu Nkhoma said such engagements are vital in strengthening collaboration between the Zambia Police Service and the media in the province.

He said enhanced cooperation between the two institutions will contribute to peaceful and credible elections.

Kangwanda wants to be Chipolopolo regular

0

Newly crowned MTN Super League player of the season Albert Kangwanda is seeking to be a regular in the Chipolopolo squad.

Forward Kangwanda of Red Arrows had a stellar 2025/26 campaign, winning the ABSA Cup and finishing as the league’s second-highest scorer with 13 goals.

At the weekend, Kangwanda edged out stiff competition from Power Dynamos’ top scorer Moses Shumah and Kabwe Warriors goalkeeper Mangani Banda to claim the top individual prize.

“I would like to be a regular in the Senior National Team,” Kangwanda said.

Kangwanda won the 2022 COSAFA Cup with Zambia and was described as a hero after his performance in the final.

He scored three goals at the 2023 COSAFA Cup, helping Zambia win back-to-back titles, whilst also becoming joint top goalscorer of the tournament.

“I have always wanted to represent my country in every game and help them to get victories,” Kangwanda said.

“This is also another challenge I am working on, consistency with the national team and also scoring for the national team,” he said.

Since 2020, Kangwanda has made 15 appearances for Zambia, scoring five times.

He has played in Croatia, Moldova and Sudan.
