Champions League and UEFA cup winning coach Rafael Benitez did a comprehensive analysis of the final between Zambia and Ivory Coast in an article titled “Zambia Spring a surprise on Ivory Coast”, on his personal blog.

Rafael Benitez is well remembered for leading Liverpool to the Chanpions League title against AC Milan in a classic final. Liverpool came from 3–0 down at half time to level the score at 3–3 in the space of just six minutes and eventually triumphed 3–2 on penalties. Benítez’s calm methodical approach at half time was said to have given the players the belief they could pull off an improbable comeback and win Liverpool an historic fifth European Cup.

In doing so, Benítez became only the third manager in history to win the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League in successive seasons. Benítez’s tactics were credited as a key factor in Liverpool reaching, and winning, the final, despite an unimpressive squad of players.

For those interested in th technical details of football or just want to appreciate the significance of tactics in football can read the full article by click on the link below. The article has even a visual animation of the player’s tactical movements.

Luo suspends Siavonga Council

Local Government and Housing Minister Nkandu Luo

Government has suspended Siavonga District Council for alleged illegal land allocation involving senior officers including the council secretary.

Minister of Local Government, Housing, Early Child Education and Environmental Protection Nkandu Luo, who announced the development at a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, said the suspension of the local authority is with immediate effect.

Prof Luo said she will not entertain petitions from anyone over the suspension of the council.

“Owing to reliable reports received by my ministry on alleged corrupt practices which include irregular allocation of plots, I have decided to invoke statutory provisions under the Local Government Act (Section 88) to suspend the council to allow for investigations.

“I have signed a statutory instrument suspending Siavonga District Council. The instrument will be published in the Government Gazette appropriately,” she said.

Prof Luo said her ministry has received numerous reports of council officials allocating themselves pieces of land meant to benefit the general public.

“It is a situation where the council advertises a piece of land but instead of allocating it to members of the public, they (council officials) share the land amongst themselves and later sell the pieces of land to members of the public,” she said.

Prof Luo said Southern Province local government administrator Alex Bwalya has been appointed to manage operations at the local authority.

She said Mr Bwalya will discharge all the functions at the council for an initial 90 days until investigations are concluded.
The minister said Government will not tolerate misconduct among council officials who are supposed to work hard to deliver improved services to the people.
Prof Luo said Government will remain focused to ensure that corruption in local authorities is fought and culprits are brought to book.

She said President Sata and his administration will not relent in fighting corruption and warned of stern action against perpetrators of the vice.

The minister said there will be no sacred cows in the anti-corruption crusade. She said abuse of office, laziness or direct theft of public resources will not be tolerated.

Prof Luo said the suspension of the Siavonga District Council should serve as a lesson to other local authorities and senior officers who engage in corrupt activities because the long arm of the law will catch up with them some day.

She said Government will not condone any departure from the accepted norms, practices and procedures in the management of local authorities.

Movie review: Oscar nominated movie : Midnight in Paris

3

This is a romantic comedy set in Paris about a family that goes there because of business, and two young people who are engaged to be married in the fall have experiences there that change their lives. It’s about a young man’s great love for a city, Paris, and the illusion people have that a life different from theirs would be much better.

PROS

  • Interesting story line .
  • Great acting by the whole cast . Owen Wilson did a good job with his character. This is his best movie since “Marley & me”
  • The scenery of Paris was captured beautifully ,the city really came to life.

CONS

  • The movie ended quite abruptly ,you will feel like more could have been done.

FAVORITE QUOTES

Adriana: That Paris exists and anyone could choose to live anywhere else in the world will always be a mystery to me.

Ernest: If it’s bad, then I hate it because I hate bad writing. If it’s good, then I’ll be envious and I’ll hate it all the more.

CONCLUSION

Midnight in Paris is a very nice movie . Woody Allen writes a great screenplay that contrasts a person’s life with their dream. He wonderfully illustrates ones unappreciative attitude towards the life and era they live in in a humorous/witty way . It is the type of movie that leaves you with something to think about at the end .

It asks the question if we are satisfied with our lives in the present ,because we always reminisce and thing of our “golden years” . You hear people complaining about today’s music and how much they miss the “golden oldies” ,but if you were to go back in time to ,say , the 80’s . The people of that time would also be reminiscing of the music of the 60’s .

The movie has received four Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay and Best Art Direction

Esther Faces Monalisa Test

5

Esther Phiri finally returns to the ring after a one-year hiatus to defend her IBO and WIBA light welterweight crowns.

She will come face-to-face with Monalisa Sibanda who beat her 13 fights ago on October 10, 2005 in Harare.

However, the status of that last fight has been scrapped from a second round stop fight in favor of Monalisa to a no contest ahead of tonight’s bout at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.

Since then, Esther has been unbeaten in 13 fights in which she has drawn one with three knockouts along the way.

It will also be the first time Esther will take to the ring in a rematch after rebuffing earlier overtures from the likes of Terri Blair against whom she fought to a bruising draw three fights ago on November 28, 2009.

Today’s fight will hopefully settle any despite as to who is the better fighter following the scrapping of the result from seven years ago.

However, it will be Monalisa who will be coming into this fight with more ring rust after having not fought since 2008 to raise a baby.

“Although I have not been fighting I have been training and I’m a good boxer, “Sibanda said at the official weigh-in in Lusaka on Thursday.

“Esther knows that, and she must be ready to surrender her belts.”

Meanwhile, the fight has not been without other controversies after being cancelled three times since July due to injury to Esther and logistical problems.

But despite that, camp Monalisa has been very patient and how much of that is a virtue for the Zimbabwean will be put to the test against Esther.

Stoppila Sunzu scores the penalty that earned his team's victory over Ivory Coast during the penalty

Reuters reports that Stoppila Sunzu has set his sights on a move to England after becoming a hero in Zambia for converting the winning penalty in Sunday’s African Nations Cup final against Ivory Coast.

“I played for (French club) Chateauroux in the 2008-09 season and I would love to come back to Europe,” said Sunzu who is now with the Democratic Republic of Congo team TP Mazembe.

“I have a dream to play in England as I prefer Chelsea and Bolton Wanderers,” the defender told Romanian media on Thursday.

Zambia beat the Elephants 8-7 in a drama-filled penalty shootout in Libreville, following a 0-0 draw, to win the Nations Cup for the first time.

After the under-20 World Cup in Canada in 2007, Sunzu impressed in trials with English side Reading but he was denied a work permit.

The 22-year-old enhanced his growing reputation by keeping Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba quiet for much of Sunday’s final.

“Drogba was almost invisible, it was very easy for me,” said Sunzu. “I have no secret, I’m not afraid of any player or team regardless of names.

“I was very confident throughout the match. I was focused and it helped me to convert the last penalty.”

Frenchman Herve Renard coached Zambia at the Nations Cup but Sunzu also credited predecessor Dario Bonetti of Italy who was sacked in October, two days after the team had qualified for the finals.

“He (Bonetti) is a great coach, he did a very good job,” said the defender. “He contributed greatly to winning the cup although he wasn’t with us during the tournament.”

Sunzu said the players were given a unique reception in Zambia after the final.

“It was unbelievable,” he said. “Such a thing has never happened before in our country.

“People marched through the streets of Lusaka to celebrate with us and we were received like heroes.”

Rabies disease has hit some parts of Kasama, Malole and Mungwi districts of Northern Province.

This came to the attention of Health Deputy Minister Patrick Chikusu who visited Malole, Mungwi and other selected Health centres in the in the province.

Northern Province Provincial Medical Officer Jerita Chinyonga also confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mungwi and attributed the disease outbreak to the un vaccinated dogs that are looming the area.

And Mungwi Baptist rural health centre Sister in charge Grace Sinkala said the rabies outbreak in the area has affected both the young and the old and added that more patients are still being brought to the health centre.

Meanwhile Dr Chikusu has directed the provincial medical team to ensure that they procure more rabies vaccine to combat the scourge.

Dr Chikusu also directed the Provincial medical office to engage the Provincial Veterinary Officer and work out modalities on the vaccination of the reported rabies infected dogs before many people get affected.

Efforts to get a comment from the Provincial Veterinary Officer by ZANIS proved futile as he was reported out of town.
