Kitwe United Lament Promotion Failure

1

Kitwe United Chairman Michael Kalima says the legendary club regrets
its failure to win promotion to the elite league this year.

In the ended Division One North campaign, Kitwe United finished on
number nine with 44 points in 34 games.

Kalima said at the beginning of the season the Buchi Boys targeted to
win promotion and started the campaign on a good note.

“We started well and our aspiration was to play premier league
football next year but when you look at the last nine games we have
played, we have not performed well and when you don’t play well, you
should expect the worst,” he stated.

Kalima said:” We do regret our failure to win promotion, you see every
team’s expectation is to win the league and qualify to the Super
Division but things may not turn out to be the way you expected”.

He acknowledged that club supporters are disappointed with poor
showing of the Garden Park outfit this year which has led to the
team’s failure to bounce back to the Super Division.

“Yes! The supporters are disappointed.obviously after changing the
technical bench the fans expected the performance of the team to
improve,” Kalima said.

He further promised that Kitwe United will strive to win promotion to
the elite league next season.

Renard Downgrades Felix Katongo’s CAN Status

22

Herve Renard has said Felix Katongo’s 2012 Africa Cup ticket has been downgraded from confirmed to standby.

Felix’s modest showing against Nigeria has forced Renard to give the Green Buffaloes midfielder who is struggling with fitness issues an 11th hour deadline to be ready for the Africa Cup.

“He was average against Nigeria but it wasn’t a surprise it is normal he is in the process to pass the test,” Renard said before departure for week-long tour of India where Zambia will play two friendlies against their hosts in Goa on November 25 and 29.

“At the moment no, but the Africa Cup is on January 21, that’s two months. There is enough time if he is able to make it.

“I like Felix Katongo but am not sure for him to be in the final 22. If I left him at home how will he improve?”

Felix is part of the 20-man India-bound team that comprised of 16 home-based players and four foreign-based players.

Renard also warned that three foreign-based players must impress him before Christmas to justify their call-ups.

Defenders Francis Kasonde and Hichani Himoonde from TP Mazembe who are fringe players for both club and country have two games in India to try and make Renard happy.

Renard said he is also looking forward to seeing how Chisamba Lungu of Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast in Russia performs in India.

“They have one month to show us that they can compete,” Renard said.

The Patriotic Front has assured Zambian diplomats abroad that those working genuinely as professionals, should not be afraid of being recalled.

PF secretary general Wynter Kabimba says the country’s envoys should not think that the ruling party has embarked on a witch hunt meant to axe sympathisers of the former ruling party – the MMD.

Mr. Kabimba says this when he addressed Zambian diplomats and their spouses at “Zambia House” in Brussels on Monday.

This is contained in a statement released to ZNBC by first secretary for press at the Zambian mission in Brussels Samuel Ngoma.

Deputy Minister in the Vice-President’s office, Edgar Lungu says the PF government was not going round for purposes of retribution.

And Director of International Relations, Longa Chibesakunda, says the ruling party wants Zambian diplomats who will serve the country wholeheartedly.

The three-man PF delegation is in Brussels as guests of renowned German’ good governance NGO, Friedrich Ebert Stiftang to familiarise themselves with parliamentary democracy.

They leave for Berlin on Tuesday.

Zambia Development Agency asked to clear air on ZAMTEL

13

The National Union of Communications Workers – NUCW has challenged the Zambia Development Agency -ZDA- to clear the air on the intricacies surrounding the sale of ZAMTEL to lap green of Libya.

The union is concerned with latest unconfirmed media reports that the sale of the telecoms firm might have been marred by irregularities.

NUCW President Patrick Kaonga told ZNBC News on Tuesday that the nation needs to be put in a clear picture on the sell of ZAMTEL and not rely on mere speculation.

And when reached for a comment, ZDA Director General Andrew Chipwende says it will be premature to comment on the matter as government has already intimated that cabinet will soon make a decision on the sale.

Mr. Kaonga says his union has tried to meet ZDA management over the matter but the meeting has failed to materialize.

He says the sale of ZAMTEL to lap green may have serious implications on the future of the telecommunication firm in the wake of unfolding revelations.

Last week the commission constituted by President Michael Sata to scrutinize the sale of ZAMTEL to Lap green established that the transaction was illegal and fraudulent.

We congratulate RB’s appointment by Jimmy Carter Centre but we won’t fund him- Sata

President Michael Chilufya Sata says the government will not foot the bill of former President Rupiah Banda, who has been invited as co-leader of the International Observation Mission for the Presidential and Legislative Elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by the Jimmy Carter Centre.

This is according to a statement released by Special assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations George Chellah.

Mr Sata stated that while he congratulated his predecessor for the appointment, he could not allow tax payers money to be spent on personal programs.

“Since the invitation is to Mr Banda as an individual, government has difficulties in spending taxpayers’ money on other people he would want to accompany him on this purely exclusive invitation,” President Sata said.

Meanwhile, State House has urged the business community and the general public to be wary of a flurry of tricksters masquerading as agents of President Sata as they solicit for financial assistance and job placements.

“State House wishes to caution any individual or organization in both the private and public sector approached in the name of the President or any senior State House official to exercise due diligence,” the statement said.

“The business community and the general public are therefore, advised to report any such matters to law enforcement agencies and State House stands ready to testify in any court case that may be brought against such fraudsters.”

LAP Green Networks will defend its investment in ZAMTEL

72

Libya’s LAP Green Networks on Monday defended its investment into Zambia’s fixed line operator after President Michael Sata said last week government could reverse the transaction.

Libya’s LAP Green last year bought 75 percent of Zamtel for $257 million and the remaining 25 percent shareholding was retained by the government.

Sata said Zambia’s cabinet could overturn the sale after a commission of inquiry found that Zamtel was illegally sold to the Libyan company.

In a statement on Monday, LAP Green Networks said the company would work diligently to protect its investment in Zambia of over $300 million

The company said the sale was done “transparently and within the established legal framework” and expected “just treatment” from Zambia’s government.

“The bid for Zamtel was done independently of any internal process by the government and ministries in charge of the sale,” the company said.

Since his election in September, Sata has thrown a spotlight on a number of deals executed under his predecessor Rupiah Banda, who was criticised for taking a relatively lax line on graft.

Sata in October scrapped the $5.4 million sale of unlisted Finance Bank to South Africa’s FirstRand.

LAP Green Networks said it would cooperate with Zambian authorities but had not yet been approached by government to discuss its interest in Zamtel

KK off to China as President Sata’s special envoy

FORMER President Kenneth Kaunda yesterday left for China as President Sata’s special envoy to that country. Dr Kaunda, who left aboard an Ethiopian Airlines flight around 15:00 hours, was accompanied by his wife Betty, his personal physician, and senior government officials.

He was seen off at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Effron Lungu. The former President refused to disclose contents of the message he is taking to Chinese President Hu Jintao, saying he cannot do so before delivering it.

He, however, said he is happy that he is going to China after being on a similar mission to Angola a few weeks ago. Dr Kaunda is expected to return home on December 2, 2011.
Last month, President Sata said he will welcome Chinese investors and promised to strengthen ties with China. This was when he hosted a luncheon for investors from Beijing.

During the campaigning trail for the September 20 tripartite elections, Mr Sata was one of the harsh critics of Chinese investors, especially in the mining sector where local employees have been complaining of low wages, poor conditions of service, and ill-treatment by their Chinese employers.

Meanwhile, NANCY SIAME and KANGWA MULENGA report that China’s non-Ferrous Metal Mining Company (CNMC) Luanshya Copper Mine (LCM) says it will employ over 1, 000 locals before the end of this year.

LCM chief executive officer (CEO) Luo Xing’eng said the new employees will increase the work force to 3, 600 from the current 2,600 employees.

“Mulyashi mine is starting operations soon and when we open we need to increase our work force and we are hopeful that more locals will be employed once we commence full operations at Mulyashi,” Mr Luo said.

He also said the mine will continue giving priority to locals when employing. Mr Luo said plans are under way to reduce the number of expatriate workers at the mine from the current 70 to a much less number.

He was speaking in Luanshya yesterday when Copperbelt Minister John Kufuna paid a courtesy call on him at the mine. Mr Luo also said the mine will soon start revising the basic pay for miners to improve the salaries.

“Plans are under way to revise the collective package and negotiations are going on and we shall soon conclude,” he said. Mr Luo also said a renowned Chinese company has been engaged to do a design for Mulyashi mine to speed up the completion of the mine.

He said once the design has been completed, more local companies will be given contracts to do the finishing touches for the construction of the new mine. Earlier, Mr Kufuna urged the mine management to give contracts to local companies as opposed to Chinese companies.

Mr Kufuna said he has received many complaints that Zambian companies are not being given contracts at the mine. “I came here to find out whether the reports I’m receiving about giving of contracts to Chinese companies alone without considering local companies are true,” he said.

Mr Kufuna appealed to LCM to train the locals how to do jobs which are being done by expatriate workers at the mine. He said there is also need for the mining firm to improve the livelihood of people in the area they operate from through corporate social responsibilities.

RB is breaking the law – Lubinda

49
President Rupiah Banda is welcomed by Kapiri Mposhi residents
Former President Rupiah Banda

MINISTER of Information, Broadcasting and Tourism Given Lubinda says it is against the law for former President Rupiah Banda to continue receiving emoluments if he continues to engage in active politics.

Mr Lubinda was reacting to appeals from the MMD to Mr Banda to give the former ruling party more time to stabilise before he can retire from active politics.

He said although Government will not interest itself in the internal wrangles of the MMD, it is against the law for a former President to remain in active politics and continue receiving emoluments.

Mr Lubinda said Government needs a strong opposition to keep checks and balances but that it will not tolerate lawlessness.

He said it is up to Mr Banda to decide whether to continue in active politics or not but that Government will not pay a former President who is in active politics because it is against the law.

The Benefits of Former Presidents Act (Cap 15) states:

5. (1) The pension and other benefits conferred by this Act shall not be paid, assigned or provided to a former President who is…
(b) engaged in active politics.

But MMD Deputy National Secretary Chembe Nyangu said there is no need to rush Mr Banda into retirement before the former ruling party stabilises.

Mr Nyangu said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the party just came out of a defeat after the September 20 polls and that it still needs time to re-organise itself.
He said no-one in the MMD is happy about the defeat but that the party needs to move forward.

Mr Nyangu said if the party president retires, then it means that it has to go to a convention to elect a new leader. He said the party has no financial capacity to hold a convention as it spent a lot of money during the campaigns.

Mr Nyangu said it would not be the right thing for Mr Banda to retire as this would leave the MMD crippled with no-one to lead it.

And Mr Nyangu said MMD members are scared of revealing their intentions to lead the party because of fear of victimisation allegedly by the Patriotic Front (PF) Government.

He said the recent arrests and probes of MMD leaders have led to most members shunning the application process because they are afraid that Government would arrest them.

Mr Nyangu complained that Government had focused its attention on investigating the former ruling party when there are other parties such as the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the National Restoration Party (NAREP).

He said the PF should also explain where it got funds to finance its campaigns.

Mr Nyangu said it is public knowledge that the MMD has well-wishers who provided funding.

He said the MMD did not harass any party when it was in power over the source of funding for campaigns because every party has members and well-wishers who help it from time to time.

Nevers Mumba to decide his MMD candidature next week

36

ZAMBIA’s High Commissioner to Canada Nevers Mumba says he will state his position next week on whether he will contest the position of the MMD party presidency.

Dr Mumba said he will issue a comprehensive statement in which he will make his position known on whether he will contest the position of the MMD party presidency.

He said this in a telephone interview from Canada on Sunday that he has received a lot of requests from MMD members that he should take over the leadership of the opposition party and help it regain the popularity it used to enjoy from Zambians.

“I don’t want to comment on this matter now, but I will next week issue a comprehensive statement which will indicate whether I will or not contest the position of the MMD party presidency,” Dr Mumba said.

Die Hard MMD youth wing has backed the candidature of Dr Mumba to take over the party presidency from current holder, former republican president Banda.

National coordinator Bowman Lusambo said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, though other party officials named in the former ruling party’s presidential race equally have leadership skills, Dr Mumba is the best candidate.

Others that are vying for the MMD presidency include former minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry and Lunte member of Parliament Felix Mutati, former deputy minister of Local Government and Housing and Chisamba member of Parliament Moses Muteteka and former minister of Foreign Affairs and Kasempa member of Parliament Kabinga Pande.

Others are former minister of Local Government and Housing and Mumbwa MMD MP Dr Brian Chituwo, former Minister of Finance and National Planning Situmbeko Musokotwane, Charles Ngesa and Nason Msoni both party members.

“We think Dr Mumba can push us from where we are now to the next stage, probably taking us back into power. We know that Dr Mumba will work with us the youths, all structures of the party, the Church and ordinary Zambians.

“Dr Mumba has a lot of experience which will help the party regain its popularity it used to enjoy from Zambians. We want someone who will help the party to win the forthcoming 2016 tripartite elections and not someone who will destroy the party,” Mr Lusambo said.

He said Dr Mumba has leadership qualities that the opposition MMD needs in its current state.

Mr Lusambo also said Dr Mumba is the right person to take over the leadership of the party because he once served as republican vice-president in former president Mwanawasa’s administration.

Mr Lusambo said Dr Mumba is charismatic, clean and has the ability to interact with all citizens regardless of their political affiliation and has vast experience in relating with the international community.

He warned that the MMD youths will not support any candidate who will engage in corrupt practices to win the presidency.

Mr Lusambo said all the presidential hopefuls must exercise their democratic right in a decent manner.

Katele Kalumba attacks MMD NEC and defends Wife

57
Katele Kalumba
Katele Kalumba

FORMER MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba has called for the resignation of the entire MMD national executive committee (NEC) to allow an interim committee to undertake an election postmortem, including sourcing funds to hold an extraordinary convention.

But MMD national secretary Richard Kachingwe says the MMD leadership is busy re-organising the party and will not engage in trivialities with Dr Kalumba.

Dr Kalumba said in an interview yesterday that the current NEC cannot have new thinking to conduct an objective postmortem when it failed to provide leadership during campaigns prior to the September 20 tripartite elections.

“The group had no strategy whatsoever, what new ideas will they provide to the party now? They will simply cover their own mistakes. If they have any moral or political sensitivity, they should step aside and allow an interim organising committee to undertake the postmortem,” he said.

Dr Kalumba said the interim committee should also look into campaign financing and how funds were used in the run-up to the tripartite elections, including funding which will be needed for the extraordinary convention.

[pullquote]“Let them know that Katele Kalumba and Lumba are the last of the human species on earth who can succumb to threats. We are least impressed with their threats, I cannot be threatened by political stalk borers,” Dr Kalumba said.[/pullquote]

He said the interim committee should also review the MMD constitution and propose corrective measures to issues like the abolition of the party vice presidency and the undemocratic practice of re-appointing people who have been rejected by the membership to NEC positions because this defeats democracy.

“For the sake of our national chairman Mr Michael Mabenga, he should know that there is a provision for an extraordinary convention in our party constitution,” Dr Kalumba said.

He said there are many funders of the MMD who are sympathetic enough to allow the MMD to go through a renewal of leadership.

“We need a renewed leadership that will allow new leadership to emerge to give hope to our members and not the same old faces like Katele Kalumba and Michael Mabenga. Our debate is not self-interest but how we can salvage MMD from going to the brink of collapse,” Dr Kalumba said.

He said there is a ‘crisis of faith’ in the MMD and the only way this can be addressed is through an extraordinary convention.

“The leadership we have now will pass judgement on former vice president George Kunda ,who was a partner to former President Banda and by all accounts was playing the role of vice president in the party when he was a trustee,” Dr Kalumba said.

[pullquote]“There is no provision in the MMD constitution for groups like Die Hard MMD Youth Wing and provincial task force chairmen, they are speaking with no locus standi in the party. Fundamentally, MMD was founded on the principles of open, transparent and truthful debate and that is what took us to Garden House motel, every member is protected by the MMD constitution to debate any issue, there is no issue that is sacrosanct.[/pullquote]

He also said it is unfortunate that pressure groups with no constitutional positions like the Die Hard MMD Youth Wing are attacking him and his wife Lumba for speaking out on issues affecting the MMD.

“There is no provision in the MMD constitution for groups like Die Hard MMD Youth Wing and provincial task force chairmen, they are speaking with no locus standi in the party. Fundamentally, MMD was founded on the principles of open, transparent and truthful debate and that is what took us to Garden House motel, every member is protected by the MMD constitution to debate any issue, there is no issue that is sacrosanct.

“Let them know that Katele Kalumba and Lumba are the last of the human species on earth who can succumb to threats. We are least impressed with their threats, I cannot be threatened by political stalk borers,” Dr Kalumba said.

But Major Kachingwe says the MMD leadership is busy re-organising the party and will not engage in trivialities with Dr Kalumba.

“Those are his views and we will not comment on non-issues. Why do you want to turn me against my brother? That is the exact thing I told the Post Newspaper. We are busy organising the party and we don’t want to go into trivial issues,” Maj Kachingwe said.
