Nkana put their financial woes aside to go top of the Division 1 north table with an emphatic opening day week 1 home win while the same couldn’t be said about fellow crisis-ridden club Mufulira Wanderers who asked for time out.

Nkana crushed promoted Zesco-Luapula 7-1 in  Kitwe on Sunday in a Week 1 round of matches that saw seven out of the nine Division 1 north fixtures played.

However, their fellow financially troubled old rivals Wanderers failed to host Kalewa on Sunday at Shinde Stadium in Mufulira due to logistical reasons after Mopani Copper Mines recently ended their traditional long-standing sponsorship of both the legendary 9-time league champions and Nkana.

Wanderers have asked Faz for a 2-week break to reorganize themselves before kicking off what is expected to be their most challenging season in over 50 years.

Meanwhile, two clubs are tied in 2nd place in Division 1 north at the end of Week 1.

Afrisports were 2-0 away winners over promoted Chingola Leopards while Elijah Litana’s Mining Rangers also won by the same margin at home in Kitwe against Muchindu.

And Kalulushi Modern Stars return to Division 1 after two seasons in Division 2 began with a 0-0 draw at Independence Stadium in Kalulushi against Kitwe United.

Why deserving teachers have not been paid rural hardship allowances

ACCOMMODATION for many teachers who have been recruited in the districts has remained a major challenge. Here a teacher at Kafue's Nankanga Basic School settles into his new home

Education Minister, Geoffrey Lungwangwa says the delay to

pay rural hardship allowances to deserving teachers in rural areas is as a result of the verification process.

Prof Lungwangwa said his ministry was still carrying out a verification and audit of teachers in some areas to ascertain those eligible to get the allowances.

Speaking in an interview , Prof Lungwangwa clarified that not all teachers based in rural areas qualified for rural hardship allowances hence the reason why the ministry decided to do a verification process.

He said there was no need for the teachers to go on strike because the Government had been paying teachers their rural hardship allowances and that the monies were delayed by the system.
“There is no need for teachers to go on strike due to non-payment of rural hardship allowances because those who qualify will eventually get their money, the Government has been paying this money, the only delay is the verification process, it is done for a purpose,” he said.

Prof Lungwangwa said the criteria of verification to pay rural hardship allowances was not only done in his ministry but to other public service workers as well, to ensure allowances were paid to intended beneficiaries.

The minister was reacting to unionised teachers in Chongwe, Katete and Chadiza who unanimously resolved to go on strike to press the Government to pay them their rural hardship allowances from April 2008.
Prof Lungwangwa said his ministry would institute investigations to verify whether those teachers threatening to go on strike were all qualified for the rural hardship allowance and normalise the situation.
“ I was trying to get hold of people who can assist us with information on the ground to determine whether these teachers all qualified for the rural hardship allowances but failed, my ministry will verify these issues so that as a ministry we can have a clear picture of the strikes,” he said.

Rupiah, MMD, and the Economic Malaise in Zambia

I will sack you... President banda addressing MMD cadres at State House
I will sack you... President banda addressing MMD cadres at State House

By C.Chanda
It is now common knowledge that Rupiah Banda, President of Zambia, and his MMD party have lost direction. At a defining moment in our country’s economic situation, Rupiah’s government has vigorously engaged in a fight with a private business. We can all see that the methods being used to champion the prosecution of Post newspaper editor, Fred M’membe and Mutembo Nchito are borne out of vindictiveness.

It is clear for all to see that Rupiah is engaging in an eye for an eye type of politics. Rupiah is ignoring advice from all corners of moral society to focus his energy on improving the lives of the suffering Zambians. He is aggressively pursuing a path of destruction and wants to destroy anything and everything in his path. This path will lead him to self-destruction. But we don’t care if he self-destructs. We care about the millions of Zambians who have placed their hopes of an improved economy on the government.

We are not interested in Rupiah settling scores with private citizens. We want you, Rupiah Banda, to bring forth tangible economic ideas which will mitigate for the diseased economy our country finds herself. We want you, Mr. President, to champion an economic program that will reverse the numerous job losses, the closings of mining companies, and the suffering of the people. Mr. President, you are the custodian of our hopes and you will need to deliver us out of this malaise.

Zambians are not interested in your agenda to bring to book failing private companies. If these individuals have committed financial crimes, we have capable law enforcement agencies to deal with this. Why should it be your pre-occupation to make sure that the Post closes down. It appears, Mr. President, you have not learned from what Chiluba and other former leaders are going through today. Just to remind you, Omar Al- Bashir, President of Sudan, has been convicted at the UN for crimes against humanity. This is a leader who has abused his authority, an authority bestowed on him by the good people of Sudan through their resolve to have a ‘supreme law of the land’, the Constitution. Mr. President, it is time that you rearranged your priorities and took on a leadership role in the economy. We cannot afford another year with this kind of immaturity at State House.

While you and your children go to bed on fully fed stomachs, we the patriotic Zambians go hungry. While you enjoy world class health facilities, we the patriotic Zambians are treated to mediocrity. While you still have a job because of us, we the ever patriotic people are jobless.

Things need to change and change fast. We will not sit idle and fear the suppression of our opinions by your government. We are entitled to critique the political operations of anybody. Zambia is our country and we too, are responsible for its well being. The sacrifices we have made in the midst of blatant political and economic mismanagement will not go to waste. We have a responsibility to our children and our future generations. The buck does not stop at you being President, for our great country will live on many more years after you have vacated State House. Therefore, it is prudent that we lay a solid economic and political foundation, a foundation upon which our children will build a strong and vibrant political system

We, the people of this great country, have made numerous sacrifices since independence, so that we may have better lives for ourselves and our children. But the rate at which our country is going, both politically and economically, one wonders what will be left of our country by the end of your term. If you have failed to run the country, Mr. President, please do the honorable thing-RESIGN. We will hold you in higher esteem if you took this step.

We realize that the world has moved at an alarmingly fast pace since you lost your Munali seat in 1991. The ideas of today may just be too much for you to comprehend. Now is a time for our country to be governed by someone who understands the current economic dynamics. We need an intelligent and practical player who can steer the economic ship to prosperous shores in the midst of catastrophic storms and waves. We need someone with fresh ideas to create a unity of purpose in our politics. We need a President who will change the political landscape to that which is tolerant of divergent views, one which views political opponents as positive contributors to the well being of our nation. Mr. President, no one holds a monopoly on intelligent ideas. This is the more reason why tolerance of divergent views is critical if we have to live up to the promises of our constitution.

We will not ask, or expect you to do things beyond your capability, but we ask you to consider ideas and opinions of other people. Rupiah, you are not an island of knowledge. You are not the only President this country has had. We implore you to reflect hard, magnify, and ponder.

Excessive beer drinking among youths worry DC

An unidentified youth gasping for breath after imbibing a lot of alcohol

Mansa Acting District Commissioner Charles Makwaya has bemoaned the excessive alcohol consumption in the district especially by youths.
Mr. Makwaya said alcohol consumption was retarding development in the district because people were continuously drinking beer instead of engaging themselves in productive activities.

He said beer drinking was also rife amongst the adolescents, posing a great danger to their lives and future as they could not go to school.
Mr. Makwaya was speaking when he officiated at an HIV/AIDS Alcohol Research Findings Dissemination Workshop by Health Communication Partnership (HCP) in Mansa.

The DC said there was need for people especially the youths to make positive life choices that would contribute to their improved livelihoods in the district instead of constantly engaging themselves in beer drinking.

Mr. Makwaya noted that the excessive beer consumption had resulted in increased HIV/AIDS prevalence levels in the district , which has increased from from 11 percent last year to 14 percent this year.
He said excessive alcohol intake in the district had exposed people to risky sexual encounters resulting in the further spread of HIV/AIDS.
“It is sad that we are spending more time drinking when we can shift that time to fighting poverty and HIV/AIDS which are our main enemies today,” Mr. Makwaya said.

Luapula Province HCP Programs Officer, Steven Filumba said there was need for strengthened partnership amongst all stakeholders to mitigate excessive beer drinking and thus reduce HIV/AIDS risky behaviors in the community.
Mr. Filumba called for enhanced enforcement of the law to regulate alcohol abuses among youths.
“We need the law to be enforced starting from the issuance of liquor licenses to routine monitoring of these beer outlets to ensure that they adhere to the law in terms of age limit and operational time,” Mr. Filumba said.
He noted that the local leadership needed to be involved in community mobilization for action on health and other social issues that come with excessive alcohol consumption.

HCP recently conducted a research in Chongwe district to learn about the factors that influenced alcohol consumption and the effects alcohol had on sexual risk-taking which resulted in spreading and contracting of HIV/AIDS.

The research recommended interventions to reduce Zambians’ vulnerability to excessive alcohol consumption and its consequences in health, social and economic spheres.
The report which was disseminated to stakeholders in Mansa over the weekend recommended that government needed to strengthen the capacity of the law officials to enforce the laws and regulations on liquor.

Angry Choma stepmother blinds stepson

39

A seven year old boy in Choma district has lost his sight after his angry step mother allegedly flung at him .

The named boy had his left eye brutally severed as a result.

His grandfather, Workson Sifutata, confirmed in an interview with ZANIS in Choma yesterday.

Mr. Sifutata said his grandson of Mwapona compound was allegedly brutally assaulted by his step mother while he was asleep in the house during the day.

He said the the boy was born in a polygamous marriage.

Sifutata explained that the boy’s biological mother was selling at the market at the time of the incident.

He said the assailant allegedly used a stone to injure her step child.

Mr. Sifutata said his grandson, Maurice, was admitted to Choma general hospital where authorities discovered that the left eye had been completely damaged in the assault.

He said the matter had been reported to police and the suspect had been arrested but released on police bond.

Mr. Sifutata said police had since referred the matter to the Victim
Support Unit but expressed worry at the pace at which the matter was being handled given that the boy had permanently lost his sight in the left eye.

He said he wants justice done because nobody was above the law especially that violence was perpetrated against an innocent minor.

The victim’s mother, Theresa Nafutata, 30, told ZANIS she believed
the first wife allegedly assaulted his son to avenge over their
differences in the polygamous marriage.

But police officer in charge, Victor Mateyo, told ZANIS in Choma that he was not aware of the report and promised to investigate.”I am not aware of this matter. I will get back to you,” he said.

However, a police medical report signed by doctors at Choma general
hospital availed to ZANIS indicated that Maurice had permanently lost his left eye in the assault.

“The eye is completely damaged. No sight,” reads the report in part.

RB is not obliged to release letter – Shikapwasha

162

ronnie_shikapwashaGovernment says President Rupiah Banda is not under any obligation to Patriotic Front leader Micheal Sata to release the letter he referred to when he addressed MMD cadres that marched to State House concerning former Minister Ng’andu Magande and Zambian Airways.

Chief Government Spokesman, Luitenant General Ronnie Shikapwasha, said in a statement obtained by ZANIS this evening, that President Banda is not also going to work on threats or ultimatums because the truth will come out after investigations into Zambian Airways have been concluded.

” When the President talked about a letter written by former Finance Minister in which he was proposing to have Zambian Airways bailed out by the Government, he had carefully studied the whole issue and had information other than was just contained in the letter,” said Lt. General Shikapwasha.

Lt. General Shikapwasha is also Information and Broadcasting Minister said President Banda is aware of the circumstances surrounding the Zambian Airways saga.

He explains Mr Banda had followed up the whole issue and was just pushed to the extent of talking about the letter by those purpoting that he was deliberately resisting to help the embattled airline or that he just wanted to demonise the former minister (Mr Magande).

He said that some people had even gone as far as suggesting that the President and his government was plotting to arrest those connected with the Zambian Airways indebtedness.

” It is, therefore, unacceptable for the Patriotic Front leader or any other person to start issuing ultimatums or threats because that is not the way the President operates,” said the government spokesman.

He has challenged Mr Sata to release the letter, since he says he has the letter and has already shown it to the Post newspaper, as long as he is satisfied that there will be no security or legal implications.

Lt General Shikapwasha urged the PF leader to realize that Mr Magande is not a PF member for his issues to be dealt with by the opposition party.

He suggested that the PF leader should leave the issue to the President and the Movement for Multiparty Democracy to handle.

” Moreover, Mr Sata should not mislead people about the oath of secrecy because he is fully aware of what it involves,” said the chief spokesman.

He explains that when Vice President George Kunda made reference to the oath of secrecy, he was merely stating what is contained in the law, which Mr Sata knows very well.

He said If Mr Sata as former Minister knows how far he can go with the oath of secrecy even now that he is out of office, why should he portray the Vice President as intimidating former ministers.

The law is clear that all who have sworn the oath cannot divulge government confidential information even after leaving office, he said.

Non performing Parliamentarians should step down – Lifwekelo

27
Edwin Lifwekelo (L)
Edwin Lifwekelo (L)

Forum For Leadership Search chairperson Edwin Lifwekelo says Parliamentarians who fail to deliver on their electoral promises should quit.

Mr Lifwekelo said in a statement obtained by ZANIS, today, that non performing Parliamentarians should step down rather than continue to masquerade as leaders .

He said it is silly for any MP to allege that the electorate are conniving with the MMD whenever they demand for responsibility and accountability from them.

” We shall not shy away from recognizing government responsibility to provide services for its citizens ,however, MPs as representatives of the people are the focal point persons for distribution of these services and it becomes silly for an MP to become defensive and fail to recognize,” he said in the statement.

He maintained that the electorate have constitutional and democratic right to task their representative if they do not deliver on their electoral promises.

Mr Lifwekelo states in the statement that while his organisation recognises the enormous responsibility that MPs have, basic community projects such as grading of the roads and providing good drainage could be under taken using Constituent Development Funds (CDF).

” As an NGO and an individual I have a responsibility to partner with the government of the day without misunderstood and that does not suggest any conspiracy to undermine any MP”.

He condemned the recent media briefing by Kabwata constituency MP  Given Lubinda ‘s suggesting that representative of the people are useless and irrelevant to the economic dispensations.

He advised Mr Lubinda to rise above partisan politics at the expense of national development.

Mr Lubinda is reported in the media to have stated Parliamentarians are law makers not to source funds for development activities in constituencies they represent.

This was after concerns were raised by sections of the electorate in Kabwata Constituency Mr Lubinda represents.

Give RB ample time, Former Choma MMD councillor

42

A former MMD councillor in Choma, says President
Rupiah Banda should be given ample time to manage government and the ruling party’s
affairs.

Ms Tunia Mpamba told ZANIS today that it is unfair for some sections of society
to criticize President Banda when he has been in office only for a short time.

She said the period that Mr Banda has been in office is too short
to attract criticisms she said are based on political rivalry.

She said President Banda needs the support from all Zambians in order for his
government to continue with late President Mwanawasa’s legacy of new deal governance.

She noted with concern at the ongoing mudslinging in which President Banda
was being unfairly criticized especially over what is going on in the
country’s economy resulting from the global economic meltdown.

Ms Mpamba said what is even worrying is that this criticism is coming from
the old folk who are supposed to support president Banda as he leads the
nation.

He has urged Choma residents to give President Banda’s government the
needed support.

The President has undergone scathing attacks by his political foes within
the MMD party and the opposition with the latest being some prominent figures
in the ruling Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) who have since been suspended.

There’s Nothing too Hard for Him

11

Today’s Scripture

“Is any thing too hard for the LORD?…” (Genesis 18:14, KJV).

Today’s Word from Joel and Victoria

In Genesis, God promised Sarah that she was going to have a child. At first she didn’t believe it. She thought she was too old. She thought her time had passed. But do you know what God said to her? He simply asked, “Sarah, is there anything too hard for the Lord?” I believe God is saying the same thing to us today. “Is there anything too hard for Me?”

Do you think your dreams are too big for God to bring to pass? Do you think that a relationship is too far gone for God to restore it? Do you think you have to just live with sickness the rest of your life? Get a new vision today because there is nothing too hard for God! God is saying today, “I am all-powerful. I can turn any situation around.” It doesn’t matter what things look like in the natural, we serve a supernatural God. The Amplified version puts it this way, “Is there anything too wonderful for the Lord?” The next time you think, “That’s just too good to be true,” remember, God wants to bless you beyond your wildest dreams. Take the limits off and dare to believe that He has wonderful things in store for you!

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, I choose to trust You with my whole heart. I know there is nothing too hard for You. Help me to stand strong in faith and keep me close to You all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
