Acting President Rupiah Banda has announced a reduction in fertiliser prices from K200, 000 to K50 000 for a 50 kilogramme bag of the commodity.
Mr Banda said that the measure is meant to encourage more farmers to engage in agriculture activities this season.
Speaking when he addressed a mammoth rally at Kasama’s President Park this afternoon,(Wednesday) he said 200, 000 farmers will be targeted to benefit from this year’s Fertiliser Support Programme.
ZANIS reports from Kasama that the Acting President also opposed the proposed increase of trade licence fees for marketeers from K185, 000 to K400, 000. Councillors across the country made the proposal a month ago.
He advised marketeers not to pay the proposed increase should it be effected until the matter has been discussed and resolved conclusively.
At the same rally, Mr Banda assured Kasama residentsin Northern Province that he would uphold the rule of law once elected president.
He warned that he would not tolerate anarchy and will deal firmly with individuals fomenting trouble in the country.
Mr Banda said his aim was to promote unity and peace in Zambia.
He further pledged to work hard and woo investment in a bid to open up Northern Province in mining and other activities for the economic benefit of the local people.
On the Kanchibiya by election results, the Acting President congratulated the Patriotic Front (PF) for scooping the seat but advised PF leader Michael Sata and his party to congratulate and accept whoever will win the October 30 presidential election.
Mr Banda started his campaign trail for Northern Province on Monday and has since held rallies in Mpika, Isoka, Nakonde, Mbala, Mpulungu and the last public rally was in Kasama this afternoon (Wednesday).
Those in Mr Banda’s campaign team comprised former Vice President Nevers Mumba, United Liberal Party President Sakwiba Sikota, MMD’s National Party Chairman Michael Mabenga, MMD’s National Secretary Katele Kalumba who just joined the campaign and Deputy National
Secretary Jeff Kande.
Others part of the campaign team included Commerce Minister Felix Mutati, Isoka East Member of Parliament (MP)who is also Community Development Minister Catherine Namugala and Mbala MP Gunstone Sichilima.
The A/President is expected back home this evening
