Division 1 Preview and Relegation round-up

Chambishi and Nkana are both just one victory away from promotion to the Faz Premier League when they take to the pitch on Wednesday in their delayed Division 1 north week 28 games.

Top placed Nkana and second positioned Chambishi have been hand the opportunity to book their promotion with two games to spare.

This is after 3rd placed Prison Leopards lost 2-1 away to relegation threatened Konkola Mine Police in their Week 28 match played on Sunday.

Nkana lead on 59 points from 27 games played while Chambishi are a point behind and Prisons stuck on 54 points and can only amass 60 points in their remaining two matches.

Victory for Chambishi in midweek at home against Mufulira Blackpool would see Aggrey Chiyangi’s team make a quick return to the top-flight following their relegation last season.

Nkana on the other hand host Lime Hotspurs will be hoping to complete their first return to the Faz Premier League since they were demoted from the elite league in 2004.

And the race for promotion in Division 1 south is set to go to the wire with the only three challengers in the race for promotion from the zone separated by just two points going into Wednesday delayed Week 28 games.

Green Eagles lead on 58 points, while Riflemen and Nkwazi are locked on 56 perched in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Eagles await Livingstone Pirates, Nkwazi are away to Profund Warriors while Riflemen are at Chilanga Heroes.

Meanwhile, the four relegation teams from Faz Premier League are confirmed after Red Arrows made sure of their survival with a 5-0 win over bottom placed Nakambala Leopards who first to be relegated a week ago.

12th placed Arrows win saw them shift to 32 points while 13th positioned Zamtel on 26 points from 28 games cannot usurp them due to a vastly inferior goal difference.

The full list of teams that have been relegated are Zamtel, Forest Rangers, Nakambala (After two seasons in the top-flight) and National Assembly who ended a four year stay in the highlife.

Indeni oil refinery resumes production

Indeni Oil Refinery has resumed production, managing director Gerald Gueglio said on Monday, after a prolonged shutdown which sparked fuel shortages as suppliers gave copper mines priority.

Last week Zambia started rationing fuel following a shortage caused by the closure of the sole oil refinery.

Indeni was shut on Sept. 1 but re-started preliminary production on Sunday with normal operations due to be resumed on Monday, officials said, following the pumping of crude oil from Dar-Es-Salaam by another state-owned firm, Tazama Pipeline.

“We have started pumping crude oil and even the refinery has started (preliminary) production. We pump an average of 2,000 tonnes of crude oil to Indeni per day,” Tazama’s managing director Largeman Muzelenga told Reuters. Tazama is set to supply Indeni with 60,000 tonnes of crude.

Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary Buleti Nsemukila said last week that Tazama could not begin to pump the 60,000 tonnes crude oil imports following a misunderstanding with a banker over a $42 million letter of credit, but the issue had been resolved.

A senior ministry of energy official said on Monday that Zambia was still importing refined fuel from South Africa, Mozambique and Tanzania to cushion the shortages following the closure of Indeni.

“The imports of fuel will continue until Indeni stabilizes its operations,” the official said.

Nsemukila said last week that the fuel shortage had not affected the copper and cobalt mines, Zambia’s main economic lifeblood, because oil marketing firms were giving mines preference for fuel deliveries.

Last week, a few service stations in the capital Lusaka were offering only 10 litres of fuel worth about $18 per vehicle while others completely ran out of petrol as motorists parked their cars and opted to go to work by public transport.

Nsemukila said the shortage had partly been caused by deliveries of fuel to the copper mines.

Levy recognises new Chieftainess Mwenda

President Mwanawasa has recognised, Elly Mwiinga Kalichi, as Chieftainess Mwenda of the Tonga people of Mapangazya area in Mazabuka.

This is according to a Statutory Instrument number 101 of 2006 made available to
ZANIS in Mazabuka by Town clerk, Ekan Chingangu.

The recognition order states in part, that President Mwanawasa was satisfied that
Mrs Kalichi is entitled to hold the office as required by subsection (2) of section
three of the chiefs act.

Meanwhile, Chieftainess Mwenda has thanked President Mwanawasa for recognising her
as new Chief Mwenda.

Ugandan community happy with existing ties with Zambia

The Ugandan community in Zambia is happy with the warm relations existing between Zambia and Uganda.

Speaking during celebrations to mark the 45th, Independence Anniversary at the
Barclays Sports Complex yesterday, newly elected Chairman for the Ugandan Community
in Zambia, Fred Kagimu, said Zambia has been an all weather friend of Uganda.

“I would like on behalf of the Ugandans in Zambia, to commend the Zambian Government
and its people for the warm and cordial relations that have existed between the two
countries from pre-independence days”, Mr. Kagimu said.

“For most Ugandans living in Zambia, this has become like a second home to us, as we
have over the years studied, and in some cases even intermarried with the Zambians”,
he noted.

And speaking at the same occasion Managing Director of Madison Insurance, Rhoydie
Chisanga said Zambia appreciates common areas of cooperation that have existed
between the two countries since time immemorial.

Mr. Chisanga said Zambia stands ready to learn from success achieved by Uganda in
developing that country’s agriculture sector.

“Uganda has a rich and vibrant agricultural industry especially for cotton and
coffee, which is largely exported to both the European and Asian markets”, Mr.
Chisanga said.

And in a vote of thanks, a Legal Expert at the Common Market for Eastern and
Southern Africa, COMESA, Secretariat Stephen Karangizi said Zambia and Uganda have
many similarities and as such the need for stronger relations.

“Both Countries are land locked, are facing similar challenges, both were colonized
by the British, and the Universities of both countries has had students from Zambia
and Uganda study and emerge in various disciplines, this goes to show the strong
bond between the two countries”, he observed.

The Celebrations to mark the Uganda’s 45th independence anniversary whose theme was
dubbed “Living in Harmony Outside Uganda”,  attracted the attendance of Zambians,
Ugandans and many other nationalities.

Ugandan, which gained her independence on 9th October, 1962, had gone through
political instability in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s that led to a mass exodus
of its people, some of whom have lived and settled in Zambia.

Zambia Under-23’s Olympic dreams look bleak

Zambia Under-23’s qualification to the Beijing Olympic Games football tournament suffered a major upset when they lost 2-1 away to Senegal on Saturday in their fourth Group B game played in Dakar.

Peter Kaumba’s teams defeat means they surrender their five-month-old dominance of Group B since the pool stage qualifiers began on June 3.

This is after Cote d’Ivoire beat Mali 2-1 in Bamako yesterday in their Group B match.

Cote d’Ivoire ‘s win means they usurp Zambia at the top of Group B to move from 6 to 9 points, exchanging places with the latter who stay put on 7 points while Senegal remain 3rd but move to 5 points after their home win.

Zambia’s defeat was their first in the Olympic qualifiers but signs of the team losing steam in the race to China were evident in their last Group B match against Senegal last month in Lusaka when they stuttered and came from behind to draw 1-1.

Kaumba’s team will now have to beat the Ivorian’s in the two sides penultimate Group B tie during the weekend of November 17-18 in Abidjan to keep their now slim hopes of making it to the Beijing finals alive.

Another win for Cote d’Ivoire in that match against Zambia will see them book their place to the Olympic Games with a match in hand with a potential unassailable 12 points going into their final Group B games on March 26 next year.

In their final Group B matches next March, Zambia will host bottom of the table Mali while Cote d’Ivoire travel to Dakar.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Under-23 is due back home this Wednesday, October 17.

Zambia have not qualified to the Olympic Games football tournament since the 1988 event hosted in Seoul, South Korea.

Barclays Cup Quarterfinal wrap-up

Zesco United, Green Buffaloes, Konkola Blades and Chambishi are all through to the semifinals of the inaugural Barclays Cup after winning their respective quarterfinal matches played this afternoon.

Newly crowned Champions Zesco stayed on course for a 4th cup final after beating Lusaka Dynamos 1-0 at Woodlands stadium in Lusaka.

Buffaloes advanced in the earlier kickoff in the doubleheader played at Woodlands after defeating Green Eagles 2-0.

Buffaloes win was secured thanks to second half goals from Maybin Ngosa and Newa Mwewa who were on target in the 52nd and 75th minutes respectively.

Meanwhile it took Zesco until the 87th minute to secure their semifinal passage against Dynamos in a grinding game.

Zambia striker Jonah Sakuwaha headed in the winner pasted the outstanding Lewis Chitala who was kept busy by the Ndola sides attackers throughout the match.

Dynamos lost their touch in the 78th minute after holding their own when veteran striker Masautso Tembo was substituted after an eye-catching performance that was marred with a bone-crunching tackle from him on Zesco defender Kunda Mushota midway through the second half.

Zesco could have been two-up in the 88 minute had Rainford Kalabas ball not sailed wide of the far post after the Zambia playmaker skipped pasted three Dynamos defenders before beating Chitala only to miss inches wide of target.

Zesco and Buffaloes will meet in the semifinals on November 3 at Nchanga stadium where Chambishi and Blades will also meet on the same date.

Chambishi booked their place into the last four after a 2-1 win over Riflemen at Nchanga while Blades beat Nkana 1-0 at the same venue in a lunchtime kickoff.

Senior Chief Kalindawalo urges subjects to engage in mineral exploration

Senior Chief Kalindawalo of the Nsenga people has urged his subjects to undertake mineral exploration in Petauke District.

The senior chief said the district is endowed with plenty mineral resources that
remain unexploited.

The traditional ruler made the call at a meeting with village headmen held at Mtondo
Basic School in his area, yesterday.

He advised people who were aware of areas with potential mineral deposits, to help
with the information in order to facilitate investigations and subsequent
investigations.

Senior Chief Kalindawalo said regretted that his subjects languishing in poverty
while the district was endowed with mineral wealth.

Meanwhile, mining activities are already taking place at Sasali in chief Sandwe’s
area west of Petauke boma.

The chief, however, regretted that such mining activities, that have been taking
place for the past ten years, have not benefited the local people.

CEEC appoints interim boss

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Director of Planning, Gideon Lintini, has been appointed new interim director general for the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission, CEEC.

 CEEC chairman, Jacob Sikazwe, confirmed the appointment of Mr. Lintini to ZANIS yesterday adding that the decision by the commission to appoint Mr. Lintini was made at a meeting held on September 28, 2007.

Mr Sikazwe said Mr. Linitini will coordinate the work of the commission in it’s formative stage and other targets, set to be achieved by the end of the year.

He explained that one of the targets, is to set up the commission’s secretariant by the end of the year.

The ministry of commerce trade and industry seconded the appointment of Mr Lintini as interim director of CEEC who’s secretariant is housed at the investment house ,formally occupied by the Zambia Investment Centre (ZIC) in Long Acres in Lusaka.

First Lady says literature is key to national development

First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa, says a well developed book industry is significant to national efforts of achieving development.

Mrs. Mwanawasa said literature is a powerful development tool due to its ability to
influence decision makers and peoples way of life.

She was speaking at the official launch of a book entitled ‘Uneasy Yoke’, written by
Dr. Kachinga Sichizya and published by Maiden publishers of Lusaka, at Mulungushi
International Conference Centre in Lusaka last evening.

Mrs Mwanawasa said there is need to continue publishing quality and useful
literature which promotes a positive attitude towards development.

She also challenged Zambian writers to highlight successes achieved in society as a
way of promoting positive trends as opposed to concentrating on negative trends.

Mrs Mwanawasa noted that as the country is in the process of formulating a new
national constitution, the task of safeguarding civil liberties should not be a
prerogative of politicians and the judiciary but all peace loving Zambians.

She explained that publishers have an important role to play by ensuring that issues
of civil liberties are well understood by the people through literature.

Mrs Mwanawasa commended Dr. Sichizya and Maiden publishers for writing and
publishing the book respectively and encouraged him to write more especially on
issues relating to HIV/AIDS.

The first Lady has since challenged Zambians to develop a passion for buying and
reading books.

And speaking earlier, Dr Sichizya said the book is intended to educate future
generations on the importance of traditional and cultural values.

Dr. Kachinda, who is also a neuro-surgeon at the University Teaching Hospital,
however, bemoaned the diminishing interest in traditional values among young people
in the country.

He expressed hope that the book will help uplift cultural values and pass on other
historic values of Zambian society to the young generation.

Meanwhile, Maiden publishers Managing Director Christine Kasonde observed that the
poor reading culture in the country has continued to impact negatively on the
development of the book industry.

MMD nominates ex-PF MP, Chimumbwa, for Nchanga by-election

The ruling Movement for Multi-party Democracy, MMD, has nominated former PF MP, Charles Chimumbwa, as its candidate for the forthcoming Nchanga parliamentary by- election.

MMD Chairperson for Information and Publicity, Benny Tetamashimba, announced the nomination at a press briefing in Lusaka today.

Mr Tetamashimba said Mr. Chimumbwa has been nominated candidate based on the
qualities of integrity he has, adding that he is also well known by the people of
Nchanga constituency.

Mr. Tetamashimba, however, acknowleged that the race for the MMD candidature for the
Nchanga by-election was tightly contested as most of the applicants were highly
wualified leaders.

He said the MMD has no doubt that Mr Chimumbwa is the right person to stand on the
party ticket in the forthcoming by-election being contested by among others the
opposition United Party for National Development, UPND, PF and All People’s
Congress, APC.

He appealed to the people of  Nchanga to vote for a candidate who is going to
adequately represent them in the on-going constitution making process.

He also appealed to the unsuccessful applicants for the MMD Nchanga candidature, to
support Mr. Chimumbwa and help him put up a strong campaign ahead of the polls.

The Nchanga seat fell vacant following the resignation of Mr Chimumbwa from the PF
to join the MMD.

And Mr Tetamashimba has defended the MMD National ExecutiveCommittee, NEC, decision
to nominate Mr. Chimumbwa as candidate for the by-election.

He said the decision is not in contradition with the party Constitutional provision
that provides that a selected candidate for an election must have served the party
for three years.

Mr Tetamashimba explained that Mr Chimbumbwa is not contesting for a party position
but rather a parliamentary position which is decided upon by the electorates.

He said the decision of NEC would have only been irregular if Mr Chimumbwa was
nominated to contest a party postion, which decided upon by party members .

Meanwhile, Mr Tetamashimba said the position of  MMD  Deputy National Secretary will
be filled soon.

He said the position is important to the party as it is a full time job.

He, however, indicated that the selection of an individual for the  position of  MMD
Vice President  will be done at a later stage.

Mr Tetamashimba has since assured party members that the NEC was doing everything
possible to fill theexisting vacancies in the party.

Chiefs in Southern Province resolve to protect children from all forms of abuse

Eight traditional leaders drawn from various districts of Southern Province have pledged to promote the protection of children from all forms of abuse in their respective chiefdoms.

The chiefs have since come together to discuss about how to effectively approach the
protection of minors from abuses such as sexual offences and others forms of abuse
prominent in the chiefdoms.

The traditional leaders who are meeting in Siavonga for a three-day Save the Children Norwegian government sponsored workshop are also tackling traditional practices that promote the spread of HIV/AIDS such as sexual cleansing.

The traditional leaders include chiefs Mukuni of Livingstone, Sinazongwe of \Sinazongwe, Moomba, Sekute and Nyawa of Kalomo, Munyumbwe of Gwembe and Simamba and
Chipepo of Siavonga district.

Morgan Sakala, a facilitator at the workshop told ZANIS that the meeting will also
sensitize and update chiefs on children’s rights.

Mr. Sakala said at the end of the meeting, the chiefs, who are the custodian of
tradition and culture, will come up with clear-cut initiatives of how to curb abuses
of children in their chiefdoms.

And Chief Munyumbwe told ZANIS in an interview that it is important to bring on
board traditional leaders in efforts aimed at addressing social and economic
challenges facing communities, particularly issues affecting the wellbeing of
children.

Chief Munyumbwe pointed out traditional leaders are key in addressing problems of
early marriages, defilement and other social ills.

He emphasized that as custodians of tradition, traditional leaders are in a better
position to deal with people that come into conflict with the rights of children.

Govt channels over K1.3 billion to science education

Government has provided over K1.3 billion to the National Science Centre to promote the capacity of science and technology education in selected basic schools around the country.

The money has been provided by three cooperating partners through the Service
Delivery Improvement Fund (SDIF).

Management Development Division Permanent Secretary George Kawatu disclosed this
today when he handed over a motor vehicle, motor bikes and mobile science laboratory
equipment to the National Science Centre in Lusaka.

Mr. Kawatu said government was keen to see improved science education standards in
basic schools in the country hence the initiative by the National Science Centre to
come up with mobile laboratories.

He urged the National Science Centre to use the equipment in a manner that would
improve the teaching of science in the country.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Lillian Kapulu said the
initiative to manufacture mobile laboratory units would offset the challenges many
schools are currently facing in the country.

Mrs. Kapulu said most schools in the country did not have science laboratories,
thereby compromising the quality of science education.

She said the donated equipment would help realise government’s objective of
promoting science education in the country, which would in turn help develop the
country.

Barclays Soccer Cup advances

Eight Barclays soccer cup quarter finalists have advanced preparations for the K 250 million rich championship.

One of the teams is the 2006 KCM Premier League runners-up Green Buffaloes football
Club who say they want to use the match against Zambia National Service (ZNS)
Division One sponsored side Green Eagles at Woodlands Staduim as a stepping stone
to lift a silverware this season.

Lusak Dynamos would face 2007 KCM premier league winners Zesco United at the same
Stadium.

Other quarter-final matches would be held on the same day, involving Nkana who faces
Konkola Blades, Riflemen to face Chambishi at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola.

Stand-in coach Goerge Chikokola told journalists at the Independence staduim during
a training session that his boys were more than ready to face Choma-based division
one side Green Eagles on Saturday.

” We are ready for the game as we have done all we can to prepare, ” said the coach.

He however said three key players namely Dennis Banda,Boston Mwanza and Simeo
Lubemba have injuries with Banda having severe injury with a fractured shin.

“We are taking him ( Banda ) to the Italian Hospital for specialist treatment,” he
said.

But he bragged that he still has a lot of ammuninitions to enable his team sail
through to the semis of the inaugural championship.

He said although his team would enjoy a slight advantage over the ZNS sponsored
Division One side, his team respects their oponents.

He thanked Barclays Bank for coming up with the initiative which he said would help
improve soccer standards in Zambia.

” I want to thank the bank for introducing the Cup as it has added more value to
Zambian football,” said Chikokola.

He appealed to GBFC fans for calm but support his team to carry the day on Saturday.

He also appealed to media fratenity to follow the rules of the game to avoid
joepardising it.

And team captain Noel Mwandila said preparations for the Saturday game was going on
well adding his team was determined to scoop the cup.

Mervin Sinkala echoed his skippers’ sentiments saying the team’s preparations were
progressing well.

Sinkala noted that although his team were looking to a second silverware, the team
was determined to win the cup in appreciation to the sponsors especially Army
Commander Isaac Chisuzi.

” As Buffaloes we are looking for a silver ware this season. We are determined to
the cup for our Army Clommander, he said.

The quarterfinals to be beamed live on national television through sponsorship of
Barclays Bank as well as on Multi Chioce DSTV would not only entertain the soccer fans but would be another leverage to improve individual players’ soccer calibre.

Meanwhile, Barclays Bank Marketing Manager Erick Ngondo urged local journalists to
be responsive to the development of sports in the country.

Addressing journalists at the end of the four day sports workshop at ZAMCOM today,
Ngondo said time had comer for Journalists to take the leading role in the
development of sports.

He said since journalists were able to make or break society it was imparative for
them to actively cover football and other sports activities in rural Zambia,
especially.

The manager said his bank was keen to support Journalist’s efforts in the coverage
of sports in the country.

The Zambia Disability HIV/AIDS Human Rights Programme has urged disabled organisations and persons with disabilities to develop keen interest and participate in the National Constititution Conference (NCC).

Programmes Director Elijah Ngwale says the participation of disabled organisations
and persons with disabilities in the NCC will give them a wonderful opportunity to
represent themselves on the NNC fora.

Mr Ngwale told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the participation of
persons with disabilities in the NCC would also play a paramount role of ensuring
that human rights to do with disabilities are not violeted in the country.

He urged politicians, the church and other stakeholders not to shunn the much
awaited and needed NCC Act but to ensure that they participate so that the alleged
numerous frauds in the NCC can be addressed.

Mr Ngwale, who also demanded the inclussion of the people with disabilities in the
NCC said there is need to expeditiously put in place a new constitution that will
answer the people’s aspiration.
