Zambia national team Wednesday Update

The Zambia national team today gathered in Lusaka today ahead of the squads departure for South Africa tomorrow where they will face Mozambique in the semifinals of this years Cosafa Castle cup to be played in Pretoria on Saturday.

All but two players of the local players or foreign based call-ups already in Zambia were in camp by 18:00, Wednesday evening.

Missing was Malaysian based striker Philemon Chipeta and Felix Nsunzu.

“Chipeta is still missing and we haven’t heard anything from him but he should join us later tonight,” Stand-in Zambia coach Fighton Simukonda said after this afternoons training session with the team.

He said there was no word on when Nsunzu would arrive after his passport was withheld by his agent in Tunisia where he was attending trials.

The Konkola Blades striker however, has retrieved his passport and is due to join the team by Friday in Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, Zambia will tonight be guests of Chrismar Hotel who will host the team in a farewell dinner ahead of their departure Thursday morning.

Zambia leave for South Africa at 07:55 where they will be joined by five other foreign based players who play in that country after they complete they club cup commitments before Friday.

Govt urges stakeholders to step up economic diversification efforts

Minister of Gender and Women Development Patricia Mulasikwanda says authorities on the Copperbelt Province should step up efforts to revisit the regional diversification programme.

Mrs. Mulasikwanda said stakeholders should identify other economic activities that
would help sustain improved economic status of the area even in the absence of
mining.

She said as much as government was happy with developments in the mining sector on
the copperbelt province, there is need for planners to increase focus on the future
prospects of the province.

She was speaking at a thanks giving church ceremony held at Envision Ministries in
Mufulira.

And Mrs. Mulasikwanda has also observed that meaningful economic development is
attainable once women are given equal opportunities to allow for their full
participation in the process of development at all levels of society.

UNIP CB Provincial Chairman arrested

Opposition United Natioal Independence Party (UNIP) Copperbelt Provincial Chairman, Oliver Kabange has been arrested by the immigration department over his nationality which is still being probed.

Investigative wings say Mr. Kabango is not a Zambian but a Congolese national
born in the Democratic Republic of Congo) DRC in 1963 and has been branded a
prohibited immigrant.

Mr. Kabango 44, a mining engineer at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is currently
detained at Kamuchanga open air prison in Mufulira.

 The opposition Copperbelt Provincial Chairman contested last years September
2007, tripartite polls as a parliamentarian for the Mufulira Central seat under
the joint alliance, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Sources handling the case say Mr. Kabango entered Zambia in 1993 and managed to
acquire a Zambian passport and National Registration Card (NRC).

The sources disclosed that Mr. Kabango claimed that he was a Zambian born at
Kashiba District in Mwense in Luapula Province, but such chiefdom does not exist.

 The sources noted that Mr. Kabango’s arrest has nothing to do with his ties with
the opposition party, UNIP.

 The sources said Mr. Kabango’s nationality has been under scrutiny for several
years now and the immigration department has managed to extract and ellicit key
details on this issue.

 The sources said Mr. Kabango was born in DRC, educated and grown up in Belgium.

The investigators say no Zambian has actually come forth to claim that they know
Mr. Kabango.

Kasempa receives agro inputs for 2007/08 season

Kasempa District has started receiving farming inputs for the 2007-2008 farming season.

Kasempa Acting District Agriculture Coordinator, Manley Mazila, confirmed the
development to ZANIS in an interview in Kasempa today that 9,000 by 50 kilogramme
bags of Urea and Compound D fertilizer has been received so far.

“I can confirm that so far we have received 6,000 by 50Kg of urea, 3,000 by 50Kg of
compound “D” and 652 by 10Kg of maize seed and another 3,000 by 50Kg of compound “D” is expected next week”, he said.

Dr Mazila said the move was in line with the deadline set by government to
distribute inputs to all parts of the country by September month end.

He, further, disclosed that  government had reduced the number of farmers intended
to benefit from subsidised inputs for 2007-8 farming season.

He explained that Kasempa has cut the number of beneficiaries from 2, 200 in last
farming season to 1,500 farmers this season.

Dr Mazila added that government does want small scale farmers to continue relying on
subsidies hence the need to reduce the number of beneficiaries.

He explained that Kasempa is second from Solwezi in terms of the number of
beneficiaries adding that the rest of the districts in the province will receive
less inputs.

“We are even better as a district because the rest of the districts in the province
have less beneficiaries, apart from Solwezi, which is the highest”, Dr Mazila said.

In another development, Kasempa has recorded a bumper harvest of over 88,000 by 50Kg bags of maize as compared to the 2005-6 farming season which had 83,000 by 50Kg  bags of maize.

Dr Mazila attributed the good produce to good rainfall pattern and dedication by the
farmers.

“Another reason for the increase is that after Dunavant company with drew from
Kasempa, cotton farmers had no other option but to switch onto maize farming” Dr
Mazila said.

Katongo lashes out at McCathy for unsporting behaviour

 Zambia National Team Skipper Christopher Katongo has lashed out at South Africa’s Bafana Bafana leading striker, Benni McCarthy, for his unsporting behaviour.

In a recent interview with a local South African tabloid obtained by ZANIS sports,
Katongo advised McCarthy to start leading by example to other African footballers as
he plays in the ‘ big’ English league where many fans and players see him.

” Well Benni should start playing leading by example because he plays in a big
English league, where many players and fans see him,” he said.

The Zambian Skipper who plays  Brandy IF football club in Denmark said during the
qualifying match McCarthy bragged to Zambian plays that they are nothing as they
cannot compare toi how much money he has made.

” Bennie was saying to our players ‘ who are you? I’ve got a lot of money than you.’
If Bennie has a lot of money , he should keep it to himself,” Katongo told the
newspaper.

He said Bennie became frustrated as things were not going well for Bafana Bafana
saying despite this, he was out of order to say what he said about the Zambian
players.

He urged Bennie to play football and not to tell people about his money saying he (
Bennie) might lose the respect from most Zambiansif he contnued saying ,’ things
like that.’

Bennie’s action to drag a Zambian player after being red carded for a second yellow
card brought the match to a halt as it attracted reaction from Zambian players.

Katongo scored a hattrick with in 21 minutes of the first half against South Africa
a defeat described by Bafana Bafana coach Alberto Carlos as the waste defeat in his
21 years of coaching career.

The Zambian skipper who attributed Zambia’s shock defeat of South Africa at their
home turf to team work also took a swipe at the lewd comments by Television
commentators during the match.

He said despite the uinfavourable comments made on the Zambian players, the
chipolopolo boys overcame all odds to win the match.

” We proved our our point on the field, not by talking too much. I always say that
talk is cheap,’ Katongo said.

And Zambian defender Billy Mwanza supported Katongo’s sentiments saying as he was
marking the South African striker he was being told about his (Bennie ) money.

Mwanza alleged that Bennie continued insulting Zambians through out the match.

” I guess it was due to frustrations because I was marking him tightly. Bennie is a
great player, but what he was saying reflects badly on him, ” said the Zambian
defender.

Levy reiterates that no Mugabe, no EU-Africa sumit

Go to fullsize imagePresident Levy Mwanawasa has reiterated that the official position of the SADC region is that nobody will attend the Eurpean Union (EU) – Africa Sumit set for December in Portrugal if Presenedent Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is not anvited to that sumit.

Mr. Mwanawasa, who is the current SADC chairman, said this yesterday when he was
answering a question from a Zimbabwe journalists on the regional body’s official
position on the summit.

Mr. Mwanawasa said it would be difficult for any head of State in the SADC to attend
the EU-Africa summit without Mr. Mugabe in attendance.

He stressed that there was need for unity of purpose in the region in all areas of
mutual interest.

Earlier, Mr. Mwanawasa and his Zimbabwean counterpart had closed door discussions on the 47th floor of New York Palace Hotel where Mr. Mwanawasa is lodging.

Meanwhile,  Mr. Mwanawasa is later today expected to meet with the Portuguese Prime
Minister where the two leaders are expected to discuss the EU-Africa summit in
detail.

Mr. Mwanawasa is also going to participate in a round table discussion on human
rights and democracy at the United Nations  Building.

The President who is in New York to attend the 62nd regular session of the U.N
General Assembly is accompanied by Foreign Affairs minister Kabinga Pande and
Commernce and Trade Minister Felix Mutati.

Agriculture Minister Ben Kapita and Science and Technology Miister Peter Daka.

Jomo Cosmos: Striker David Mwape played the full 90 minutes for 9th placed Cosmos in their 1-1 home draw with promoted and 7th positioned Platinum Stars on Sunday.

Mwape was not on target.

Lamotville Golden Arrows: Defenders Billy Mwanza and Joseph Musonda played the full 90 minutes for 6th from top Golden Arrows on Sunday in their teams 2-1 home win over second from bottom Orlando Pirates.

Wits University: New Zambia call-up Noah Chivuta played the full 90 minutes for 3rd from top Wits in their 1-0 home win over 13th positioned SuperSport United on Saturday.

Zambia Monday Update

Zambia’s Cosafa Castle Cup semifinal build-up continued in disarray today after all three Angolan based call-ups were ruled out of Saturdays game against Mozambique after their respective clubs refused to release them.

“The players from Angola are not coming because their clubs crucial league games with three matches remaining to play there while Zesco have refused to release their three players,” Zambia team manager Solly Pandor said Monday afternoon.

Midfielder Ian Bakala of Clube Desportivo 1º de Agosto, striker Adubelo Phiri from Deportivo de Villa and Petro Athletico midfielder Felix Katongo have all been ruled out.

In their place, Zambia stand-in coach Fighton Simukonda has called-up five players that will also see a rare drafting into the squad of Malaysian-based striker Philemon Chipeta who returns to the fold after almost four years in the wilderness and who is currently in the country on holiday.

The other players called up are Zambia Under-20 and Lusaka Dynamos playmaker William Njovu plus the Under-23 trio of Clive Sichondwe (Kabwe Warriors), Francis Kasonde (Power Dynamos) and Felix Sunzu (Konkola Blades).

The changes have been necessitated after clubs at home and abroad continued to flex their muscle over releasing players forcing Simukonda to seek alternative players for the game against Mozambique.

This will mean seven players originally called-up for the Cosafa Castle Cup semifinal match will miss this weekends semifinal game.

Zesco United on Sunday made an unprecedented stance by refusing to release their three Zambia players whom they will feature in Sundays Coca Cola Cup final against Nkanato be played at Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka.

The affected Zesco players are midfielder Rainford Kalaba, striker Enoch Sakala and defender Willy Chinyama.

Striker Songwe Chalwe of South African Premier Soccer League team Moroka Swallows has also been ruled out because of a Telkom Cup commitment this Saturday.

All clubs are not obliged to release any of their players for this weekends Cosafa Castle Cup semifinal match.

This is because the semifinal game will not be played on a FIFA international match date.

Simukonda meanwhile is sweating on the availability of another four South African based professionals whom have indicated they will only join the team at least 48 hours before the game.

Billy Mwanza, Joseph Musonda, Kennedy Mweene and Kampamba Chintu will all be involved in Telkom Cup outings for their respective teams in the run-up to Saturday’s game.

Zambia enter into camp on Wednesday in Lusaka and are scheduled to depart for South Africa on Thursday at 07:55 hrs.

2007 BP Top 8 Cup Quarterfinal Round-up

Defending BP Top 8 champions Zanaco, 2005 winners Kabwe Warriors including Konkola Blades and relegation-troubled Nakambala Leopards all booked their places into the semifinals of this years tournament after winning their respective quarterfinal matches played on Saturday.

Zanaco made to through after beating Zesco United 5-3 on post-match penalties when their quarterfinal match finished 1-1 at full-time that was played at the Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola.

The match was one of three quarterfinal matches that was decided via spot-kicks during the opening round of this years BP Top 8 that saw only three goals scored in all four matches in relegation time.

Zanaco took a 4th minute lead through striker Winston Kalengo who set the defending champions on the road in this match at the Trade Fair.

Zesco defender Rogers Kamwandi leveled four minutes before the break on their way to the penalty shot-out that denied the home side their third successive BP Top 8 Cup semifinal appearance.

2005 champions Warriors had no such problems after they beat Power Dynamos 1-0 in Kabwe.

Zambia Under-23 defender Bronson Chama’s 50th minute goal from a free-kick was the difference between these two teams to see Warriors the only team to reach the semifinals within the distance.

Nakambala, who booked their BP Top 8 place after finishing 8th on the top-flight log last season, will be making their debut semifinal appearance after beating Green Buffaloes in their quarterfinal match-up at their infamous square pitch in Mazabuka.

The relegation-troubled team booked their BP Top 8 semifinal place thanks to a 5-3 on post-match penalty win over the army side following a scoreless draw at full-time.

Blades did not suffer the same “giant-killing” fate that befell Buffaloes when they dispatched of troubled Forest Rangers 4–2 on spot-kicks… again after another scoreless result at the end of the 90 minutes.

In the semifinals, Zanaco take on Warriors at Nchanga in Chingola while Blades and Nakambala face-off at Nkoloma in Lusaka on October 20.

Vision 2030 sensitsation takes off in Sinazongwe

The Ministry of Finance and National planning has started disseminating the vision 2030  and enlightening government heads of departments, civil society, and the traditional leaders in Southern Province.

Presenting the books at a two days workshop in Sinazongwe, team leader of the
delegation Patrick Choolwe, said government has set up the vision 2030 to promote
economic growth in the sectors.

Mr. Choolwe said the vision 2030 would help the country to reduce the high poverty
levels, improve  production of goods and services,  improve Science and technology,
and  add value to the raw materials being produced.

He disclosed that once the decentralisation policy was put in place, districts would
have the authority to budget on their own, unlike the current situation where
planning was being done at the ministerial level without involving the districts.

Southern Province Local Government Officer, Alfred Chingi, said the vision 2030
would enable the government to plan, evaluate, and assess the failures of some
projects.

Mr Chingi said the vision 2030 would give people the right to set their own targets
in implementing developmental activities.

He said the vision 2030 would be inclusive to ensure that the civil society and
traditional leaders align themselves to developments on the ground.

Chief Sinazongwe expressed disappointment that money allocated to the district for
developmental activities ends up at the ministry headquarters.

He said government was not serious because it was failing to monitor the ministries
and the districts once money for developmental projects was assigned.

“The only way to reduce inefficiency was government to bring decentralisation
policy, and since you are involving us in your plans, let us also know the amount of
money you are bringing to the district for development,” the chief said.

Sinazongwe District Commissioner, Laiven Apuleni, said the government was determined to ensure that the vision 2030 was achieved.

“We must determine our own destiny and we are capable of prospering because as a
nation we have given ourselves a plan to achieve by 2030,” Mr Apuleni said.

Politicians must not lead the constitution making process – Sikazwe

Some Non – Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have maintained their stance to boycott the National Constitution Conference (NCC) citing among other reasons their mistrust of Parliament in enacting the constitution.

The Non Governmental Organisation Coordinating Conference (NGOCC)   Representative Emily Sikazwe stated that past experience has shown that Parliament   has jurisdiction to alter what people have proposed.

Speaking on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) National Watch
programme monitored by ZANIS, Ms. Sikazwe stressed that through various laws that
Members of  Parliament (MPP) have enacted against the will of the people have
indicated of  what the MPs are capable of doing.

She stressed that the women movement would only participate if government aggress to take on board the social economical rights as reflected in the  Mun’gomba Constitution  Review Commission (CRC).

Ms. Sikazwe stated  by government refusing to consider the economic social aspects,
it was  neglecting  the core values of the poor children and women whose
organisation  represents.

Transparency International Zambia (ITZ) President Reuben Lifuka stated that  NGOs
were not comfortable  with the composition of the NCC , which he said  was dominated
by Political parties.

He also expressed surprise that government has now agreed to piece meal amendments
of the constitution which it had refused to undertake before the 2006 tripartite
elections.

But Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ) Rev. David Masupa appealed to the  civil
society not to pull out saying they are safe guards measures which have  been put in
place to ensure that  the process is conducted professionally.

Finance and National planning minister ruled out fears that government would not
take on board the social economic aspect.

He  pointed out that  part six of the draft constitution deals with bill of  rights
which would be among components to be discussed by the NCC.

He however said it would not be right for people not to have confidence in
parliament because the house was mandated to enact laws.

Lusaka Laywer Chifumu Banda said all participates will be given chance to discuss
the whole report and the Mun’gomba Draft Constitution.

Oasis Forum to maintain its distance from the NCC

The Oasis Forum says its decision to divorce itself from the National Constitution Conference (NCC) is strictly based on the fact that many contention issues in the NCC Act have remained unresolved.

Oasis Forum convener Father Joe Komakoma said at a press briefing in Lusaka today
that among the areas of concern is the composition of the NCC which is not
equitable.

Fr Komakoma  explained that this is so because out of a possible 502 members of the
National Constitution Conference, 279 are politicians, made up of 158 MPs, 48
representatives of political parties and 73  councilors. Only 15 percent of the
composition are from the civil society.

Fr Komakoma, who is also Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) Secretary General,
further pointed out that the Act in its present state does not involve the
participation of the people at the level of adoption of the constitution.

He said the NCC Act, which establishes the NCC, clearly indicates a fundamental
departure from the people’s demands for a new constitution.

Fr Komakoma said the NCC is established not to adopt a new constitution but to alter
the current constitution.

“The Mungomba CRC had listened to the people and recommended repealing and replacing the current constitution which everyone including President  Mwanawasa considered as deeply flawed, oppressive and suffocating,” he said.

He said the NCC Act in Article 4 takes away from the people the chance to  be in
charge of the country’s constitutional destiny adding that the Act  provides for a
composition that now reflects a politician driven constitution over the constitution
making process.

Fr. Komakoma stressed that the popular mode of adoption, decided upon by the people,
should not be dominated by one particular category to ensure that the  draft
constitution to be decided upon will be a product of consensus.

He said agreeing to participate in the NCC would mean endorsing and  legitimizing a
process that has clearly departed from the poeple’s wishes to  repeal and replace
the current constitution.

And Fr. Komakoma explained that the Oasis Forum is not in alliance with second
republican president Dr. Frederick Chiluba.

He said contrary to media reports, during the Oasis Forum conference held on  13th
September this year, an invitation was sent to Dr. Chiluba and the first  republican
president Dr. Kenneth Kaunda in their capacities as former heads  of state and not
as individuals.

He said public meetings convened by the Forum have always been open and that
invitations are extended to all stakeholders regardless of political or religious
affiliations.

Kapoche Mp appeals for relief food

Kapoche Member of Parliament says people in his constituency are in urgent need of relief food.

Professor Fashion Phiri says though there was a marked increase in the amount of
maize sold to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA), most of it came from Mozambique.

He said people in the constituency had little or no maize to sell to FRA  and are in
need of relief food.

Professor Phiri who is also foreign affairs deputy minister revealed this at a
consultative meeting with civic leaders in the area held at Petauke council chamber
today.

The Kapoche Mp  said the  Provincial Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit was
misinformed about the hunger situation in his constituency.

Professor Phiri assured the councillors in Kapoche that he was going to look into
the hunger situation soon.

First Lady commends the church for its support to the needy in society

First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa has commended the Christian movement in Zambia for its devotion to the  spiritual and physical needs of the vulnerable in society.

Mrs Mwanawasa says the church has been one of the most reliable partners in the work
of the Maureen Mwanawasa Community Initiative (MMCI), which has been assisting the vulnerable people in the country for the last five years.

She said the church has been transparent and accountable in donating and distributing various items to the needy communities around the country thereby making the work of the MMCI easier.

Mrs Mwanawasa was speaking at State House today when she received a donation from
Campus Crusade for Christ-Zambia to the MMCI.

The First Lady also commended MMCI volunteers working in all the 72 districts of the
country for their commitment  in reaching all the areas of the country.

And Campus Crusade National Coordinator, Teddy Kamfwa said the donation was worth
US$9,500.

The donation comprised 14 tonnes of fortified rice and soya protein.

Reverend Kamfwa said the MMCI was doinf a commendable job in easing the plight of
vulnerable in society.
