30 Buffaloes found dead in Kafue National park

Share

30 Buffalos have died of suspected poisoning in Kafue National Park.

The Buffalos were discovered dead by wildlife police officers on patrols along the Musa River, in the southern part of the park on Sunday, 27th of September 2009.

Although the actual cause of death was not immediately known the Buffalos were, however, suspected to have died out of poisoning by poachers.

This is according to Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA)spokesperson Wilfred Moonga in a statement to ZANIS, today.

Meanwhile, ZAWA has since dispatched its wildlife veterinary expert to the area to collect samples for laboratory examination to establish the actual cause of death.

Mr Moonga says the Authority has also launched extensive patrols in the area to inspect all water sources for any signs of poisoning.

  1. its your policies to blame. How could you make hunting license fees so unaffordable to locals?,
they have found solace in eliminating the innocent animals. The poachers have implemented their policy of “if we cant have the dingi, no one will”.

  2. Some people are drunk with politics. How can a death of 30 buffaloes in unclear circumstances be about Govnt policies on hunting licenses. How can you suggest that buffaloes could be saved if hunting licences are affordable are given to every Jim and Jack? How can you honestly save animals by allowing more people to Kill them?

  3. this is really a sad story. heartless poachers. These must be jailed for life. This is the same as corruption. How can you kill 30 animals that are a treasure to a country when you have no use of them. Shem man. This is really sad.

  4. 30 its too much even for the poachers, how then were they going to transport the them? I think we should not ruch to say poachers when they could be a disease in the area

  5. its the same zawa officers who might hve done such a thing, dnt blame poachers first let the vet officers tel us the report findings

  6. Let the ZAWA officers drink the waters or graze the area themselves to see if the area was sprinkled with poison. If it were poachers, where were the ZAWA officers. These guys, we are told, are able to smell poachers!!!. It is sad to lose 30 buffaloes and more are still dying. Hope its not swine flu

  7. # 5, I agree with you. Guys, lets not rush to condemn every time we hear something. For all we know, these animals could have been poisoned by something in the grass or water. Now, why would a poacher poison 30 buffaloes, as if to get horns or tusks and I am not sure buffalo horns are valuable at all. ZAWA needs to probe further into this issue to find the cause of this. 30 buffaloes is indeed a lot and we cannot afford to lose our wildlife at such an alarming rate.

  8. It may not the fault of anyone, but the authority has a hand to play. If the animal cropping system existed in the country where these animals are killed maybe once in 2-3 months for the people in the communities to eat, then they would guard them jelously indeed because they know they will benefit in some way. But the system here is that the hunters buy these animals and go to sell, and the villagers who some of them live in the game rreserves, or management areas dont even have a chance to eating imboo, they would do such a thing.. Find the cause, I suspect the the posoning is from the water mu fitobo, the same kind of posison they use to kill fish in some areas. Its not poisonous to humans. napwa.

  9. Too bad. Any other animal found dead apart from these 30 buffaloes? Find out and punish the culprit. And don’t let any predator feast on them as such can cause death.

  10. iwe number 15 Jamal,tawumfwa iwe!u have cracked my ribs………he heh heh eh .!
by the way is that u ghost dog a.k.a digital smoke?

  11. Its raises lots of Qs…how come its was only buffalos that died?did any other type of animals die?how about the fish?
Pliz ZAWA dont take this lightly,it could be more serious than u think…it might not even be poachers….it could be a deadly mysterious disease…. it could be some jealous muzungu  wanting to wipe out our beautiful natural things…..INVESTIGATE DEEP.or else all your gameparks will have no animals and that will mean no jobs for you ZAWA chaps!mwanya mukashalafye natu-koote notu pale!

  12. Poachers are heartless! how on Earth, can some one born from mothers carry toxic material in the national park just to kill an animal. This is more worse as TERRORISM in our morden time. “GOD craeted the world to be shared with all being and MAN was given the responsibility to safe guard creation not to misuse it . Such senseless killings should be investigated and its the worst of its kind….” please zedian let save mother EARTH by all means…
