Violence erupts in Mufumbwe bye-elections campaign- FODEP

cadres jeering at police officers

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has said the escalating violence in Mufumbwe by-election between UPND and MMD cadres has left nine people injured and hospitalized in various clinics.

Fodep Information Officer Macdonald Chipenzi said in a statement today that such acts were barbaric, uncalled for, should be curtailed immediately, and the perpetrators should punished.

Chipenzi said the violence has exposed the weaknesses and ineffective of the electoral code of conduct, which he describes as an affront to holding free and fair elections.

He disclosed that FODEP monitors on the ground in Mufumbwe have observed that violence was being instigated by MMD and UPND supporters have left nine people hospitalized.

Mr Chipenzi alleged that some traditional leaders are also instigating some of their subjects to beat up opposition supporters.

He said FODEP is displeased at the involvement of traditional leaders, whether indirect or direct, in intimidating their subjects into supporting certain political parties.

The Information officer urged the traditional leaders that they are supposed to be neutral and allow their subjects a chance to make their own independent choices.

He stated that it is unfortunate that political parties seeking votes from people are at the forefront of exerting pressure in terms of medical bills to families and on some health centres in Mufumbwe to treat increased casualties a result of political violence.

Mr. Chipenzi says FODEP calls on the police in the area to consider stepping up their efforts in maintaining law and order before lives are lost.

He appealed to participating political parties in Mufumbwe to employ non-violent campaign strategies, to preach unity, peace, and to coexist.

  1. These cadres also, why kill each other when abena RB, HH and Sata are very safe and comfortable wherever they are. God help these pipo.

  2. That fact that there are no reported arrests means it the ruling party pepetrating the violence thats why the Police is not acting.

  3. uko……kill each other while them politians are seating enjoying and watching you like fighting dogs that have been bet on:d

  4. These tuma traditional “leaders” are a disgrace,i dont think they have any space in the modern society,if it were Opposition cadres beating up MMD cadres, arrests would have been made by now,Shame[-x[-x[-x

  5. One would wish that these cadres were a little bit more educated and employed, but the folks are illiterates who are being used just for some chibuku and sugar! What a shame!! The same people you are voting for easily forget you once in office.

  8. Its easy to identify the perpetrators of the violence from the FODEP report.

“Mr Chipenzi alleged that some traditional leaders are also instigating some of their subjects to beat up opposition supporters.”

  9. This is what political gangstarism is all about. In Zambia today, there is no political party which uphold tenents of democracy apart from well organised chaos like evidenced in Mufumbwe. When HH promised descent politics after dribbling Sakwiba Sikota on tribal gigs, i thought he would bring political sanity. I was wrong, HH is now a political gang leader. If the likes of Serpent Cobra Sata, Rupiah Banda and HH are out oon political retirement, this country will enjoy the 21st politics.
Anyhow, am encouraging the pipo of Mufumbwe to fight each other more and if possible kill each other because being violent mean stopping thinking.

  10. It is a fact that National elections in Afghanistan and Iraq are well and better organised than a bye election in Zambia. It is a disgrace that the perpetrators of the violence are MMD thugs and some corrupt chiefs. At this rate one wonders what will happen at the general elections. The fact that FODEP is appealing to the police to act confirms that the MMD are responsible for the violence.

  11. Zambian politics is full of un educated cadres. I cant understand why on earth some one can hurt or kill his brother for belonging in a different political party. It is very un fortunate for the political party in power to condone all this nosense. Zambians, if we are not very careful we will be fighting and killing each other for nothing. Those chitenge materials you are fighting for from the MMD party will be used to cover your dead body. We dont want those kind of politics and thank you for sending peace keepers to the area

  12. Akuiponeni ifyofine bamukukulu while the chief master mind RB will continue enjoying the tender fruits discovered in old age. 😕

  13. Zambian democracy is has the potential of being the best in the world except for stupidity among some people. If you look at it properly you will find that our peacefulness is actually unsurpassed. Except for UPND that publicly still shows its tribal nature (I can prove my assertions) and a bit of it popping up now and then in PF although not so much (For the record, I absolutely don’t support PF. I’m just saying the truth), political support in Zambia is purely personal.

In my family alone, I have many UPND/PF supporters as well as MMD/NAREP/Heritage supporters, and yes, Heritage supporters are still there. I’m not sure about the other parties but I hope u get the point.
We have absolutely NO reason to kill each other over parties we can join or leave at no notice for no apparent…

  14. Chizela/Mufumbwe area was Adamson Mushala’s headquarters for a long long time when he was running circles around KK’s army. So may be the locals have a bit of a taste for violence. Zambian life can be very dull so let those villagers do one or two things to each other. It is all for a good laugh

  15. I know I know. where ever the Ruling party has an uphill battle, there is serious violence. yaba. This country it’s like the ruling and opposition parties are sworn enermies, Lions & Buffaloes war dance in Game parks. We never see such animosity in the USA elections and campaigns. Whats the secret mwebali pa USA? Why this in Africa? We have seen those in Leadership in Africa refusing to be democratically refused. We are the mastersus the masses that put people in power, but they want to oppress us and decide for us always. Aaah Nkani yalula pa Zed.

  16. The MMD government is taking things for granted. People are now fighting. They are tired……. We are Africans, and we reac this way when too stretched…

  17. What we dont know is this will slowly end up in people using Machetes (God forbid) ….lets not go the Kenya way. We should always be mindful the things we are doing even if its only a by election. If this kind of violence is not stopped i pity us next year. Especially for people who have opposing views, its like in this country any one not supporting HH or SATA is a sale out of the Govt and people always think when they speak their views opposing Govt then they speak for the Zambian people. Whereas some of us dont subscribe to govts poor performance we dont agree with the option we have been give that is the PACT . we would rather Banda than SATA and then thats a crime.

LOVE M its not only the Govt the Opposition also has a part to play . If people are fighting then its two opposing ca

  18. #16 pwando… :d:d:d:d stop those tuma cheap lies trying to scare other zambians from others so that you benefit. Zambians can no longer be fooled. Sata is the father of morden day tribal politics when he started decampaigning Mazoka purely on tribal lines. In 2001 Mazoka got the lowest votes in the Bemba dominated provinces even after scooping WP, SP, LP, N/W, CP.

The rest of us who are either aligned with PF or UPND not even MMD know the true tribalist. Dont even get this debate started. Just work hard bwana the erra of being ‘elite’ becoz you belong to some tribe is long gone!

What did one GB of PF say PUBLICILY when campaigning in Kasama? :d :d:d caught punts down baba!

  19. I like #4 coment concerning tuma “traditional leaders”! Let them kill each other so world population can go down! Kill traditional leaders kill! Viva people that have no brains!!!! VIVA!!!!!

  20. what causes this violence is the fact that to be an MP is the most coverted job in Zambia. Unlimited loans, Travel with allawances allover the place, Free fuel, talk time and accomodation allawance, work only 2 years in five before the next election, the other 3 first years spent on seminars, unlimited enjoyment at parilament motel. Gauranteed millionire after 5 yrs. Now Who wouldnt encourage violence for a chance at a job like that ???

  21. sorry guys but the list keeps improving, what a job, even if you are caught stealing public funds, just donate chibuku to the locals and they will vote you in again.

  22. 2011 people will use guns in northwestern since they are next to Angola. Many bought UNITA guns. Watch the pace. Zambia is about to go into civil war if RB and is bootlickers are not carefull.
    May God bless our Zambia.

  23. I pray that the people who are sending posts on this blog will never be leaders. All I see is hatred for other people and no respect for the Zambian people and their sovereign right to elect who ever they want. If you want to be a leader in a democracy, you must begin by respecting the collective wisdom of the people and understanding that you may not like the one they elect but you are obliged to accept their choice. The vote of every Zambian is valuable and it is no better and no worse than another’s vote. If you think your preferred choice is better, think again.

  24. Makes me think of the PBS program called “Worse than War” based on a book by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen who visits sites of mass killings in Guatemala, Rwanda and Srebrenica. Reports like this one in Mufumbwe reveal that govts are almost always the instigators of political violence. I am neither MMD nor UPND but the ruling party has shown itself unable to control its own cadres and this is shameful!

  25. north westerners dont be too much bu kamushi people using you are very safe lets not kill each other for chitenges big nshimas and fichibuku ifyalula letsbe v careful people using are bad and they dont care about your wellbeing they have there own interests and not putting your life first .If by-elections can be as hot as this what about 2011 general elections i promise you Zambia will be the next Rwanda am worried about my family and friends there will be the worst genocide in Zambia the worst ever in the world thats when you will prove that giving too much room for retired tired politicians is the worst we can do in Zambia thats why the country cant even develop because we continue giving power to old people finished ones.
