The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) has said that they will seek the court’s intervention if the Patriotic Front (PF) ruling party decides to freeze from republican president Rupiah Banda’s entitlements.

MMD Chairperson for legal George Kunda told Muvi TV that the former presidents should be let to enjoy their constitutional rights.Mr Kunda said that the former ruling party will soon consult the former president Rupiah Banda on the way forward but said they will seek the court’s interpretation in the matter.

In a press statement released to Muvi TV, president Sata through his Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations George Chellah stated that cabinet will soon give its position regarding the former president Rupiah Banda entitlements.

Meanwhile, preparations for the former ruling party’s extraordinary convention have heated up with the card renewal exercise launched in provinces. The MMD was recently in some provinces for the card renewal exercise that saw party leaders calling for unity.

In central province the exercise was characterized by some dancing among the party members. Present at the card renewal exercise were former republican Vice president George Kunda who is also Muchinga MP, Mumbwa MP Dr. Brian Chituwo and MMD presidential candidate Felix Mutati.

And speaking when he addressed the party members Mr. Mutati said the September 20th tripartite election defeat assisted the MMD to identify the true members of the party. He stated that following the long reflection on the defeat MMD is also reorganized itself and is ready to lead again.

MMD Mumbwa Central Member of Parliament Dr. Brian Chituwo warned the former ruling party not to pick on strangers to lead the party. Dr Chituwo has warned that hopes for the former ruling party to bounce back into power may not come to fruition if they rush into picking on strangers to lead the party.

Dr. Chituwo on the other hand advised the party members not to look at the financial muscle of the candidates but the leadership qualities. He said this at the MMD card renewal exercise for the Central Province held in Kabwe recently.

  1. MMD can surely bounce back following the dictatorial tendencies and poor governance already showing in the present government. The kwacha is in a free fall and FDI is drying up.

    • you are in SA have you been seeing how the rand has also been the whole world is still in a finencial crisis, but i understand you cause in any thing some one has to be blamed even when they are not the of the problem

  2. AM SO DISAPPOINTED WITH MR. KUNDA. YOU SEE HE IS MY FRIEND’S FATHER IN LAW AND IT FEELS SO BAD TO BE READING SOME NEGATIVE THINGS HE SAYS. I THINK IT WOULD PAY GREAT DIVIDENDS FOR HIM TO LEAD A RETIRED LIFE THAN ALWAYS BEING SEEN LIKE A DISGRUNTLED BOY WHOSE SWEETS HAVE BEEN GRABBED FROM HIM.

  3. IT’S HIGH TIME THE MMD DID SOMETHING TO SHUT GEORGE KUNDA UP OR HE WILL BE A FULL BLOWN EMBARRASSMENT. DOES HE SENSOR WORDS BEFORE HE SPITS THEM OUT. NO WONDER HE WAS A FALLEN MINISTER OF JUSTICE AND VICE PRESIDENT. THIS MAN CONTRIBUTED A LOT TO THE FALL OF RB!!!!! GO AND SLEEP GEORGE MAYBE YOU WILL WAKE UP WITH A FRESH MIND.

  4. Will give you another chance but do not steal and RB must be out of active politics because he performance remain questioneable.

  5. Constitution elelanda regarding ex presidents and active politics on this matter ba Goerge naimwe mwalapena

  6. George is a lawyer and he can’t interpret the constitution his party formulated, Sata was right George must be very dull or the sickness is taking it’s toll at his brain. This is what happens when you make laws targeted at one person, they start to haunt you when you are no longer in power. Taking things for granted and abusing the laws of the country was typical in MMD and they can’t believe someone is telling them that it has to stop.

  7. George is right. The mmd haas not had its convention so how do they expect RB to just drop the presidency like that? Other parties that have no regard for democratic tendencies cant see this. Did RB say he will never give up mmd power or partisan politics??? So that former benefits of president act has not been breached if you read it to the letter! We all know that some parties would like to wear the old unip socks and have zambia in a one party participatory nonsense set up again. We need to support a vibrant opposition and that is mmd and upnd now. Get it?

  8. George has always been proven right time and again….  You just don’t stop politics when you loose elections without handing over. PF seems to have no direction or time for more important national issues
2016 elections will be the biggest defeat a party will ever suffer.

  9. The past bad behaviour of MMD has come to haunt them big time. They froze KK’s benefits. they froze FTJ’s benefits based on the same things or even worse what RB is doing. So why are they crying foul when it is them that set a precidence???????? I know GK is campaigning for MMD Presidency and the other contestants will be ambushed at the right time by GK. No wonder he is busy defending the un-defendable.

  11. Ba George you know it will not come to that. You are talking to much of late. By the time cabinet sits to decide on this RB would have already handed over power to Dr. Musokotwane. April is next month and RB will be out of politics. # 9 Rugger, tough luck but the supreme law of the land prescribes that an ex President in active politics forfeits his retirement benefits and there is nothing you and me can do about it. This is the problem of laws that target individuals. # 10 the great Engineer, I do not agree on your first part, the law says no active politics for ex Presido otherwise no muchanga from government but the second part you are right, PF is headed for the worst defeat in Zambia’s elections in 2016, worse than 1991 UNIP defeat by MMD. Ba opposition please come together

  12. Section 5 of the Benefits of Former Presidents Act is in violation of Article 21 of the Constitution and therefore null and void. RB’s freedom of association including his right to assemble freely and associate with other persons and in particular to form or belong to any political party. this is guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution and cannot be taken away by an Act of parliament. besides, parliament can only withhold Rb’s benefits if two thirds majority voted in favour of the motion.

  13. This why we can’t develop, what is denying former President his money gonna help anyone
this is a bad vicious cycle , it’s gonna be sad come 5 years and poor old Sata is also denied
    his benefits,
