MMD leader Nevers Mumba has denied accusations by President Michael Sata that he seeking criminal asylum in South Africa.
Addressing a media briefing at his residence in Kabulonga in Lusaka, Dr. Mumba said the accusations that he was in South Africa to ask for criminal asylum are false.
Dr. Mumba said the opposition leaders that travelled to South Africa have no intentions of leaving Zambia because they have nothing to run away from.
“We are not running away and if there is anything that President Sata wants to do to me and my colleagues in the opposition he will have to do it right here in Zambia,” Dr. Mumba stated.
The MMD President explained that the South Africa meeting was meant to facilitate a legal meeting with their lawyer.
“We didn’t go to South Africa to have a political meeting, we went there to meet our international lawyer and as you aware our lawyer Mr. Robert Amsterdam is not allowed to enter Zambia so we had to meet in a neutral environment to discuss our legal options.”
“In today’s technological age, the issue of having a meeting outside the country does not arise. What happens in Zambia attracts the interest of the international community in real time. So where you hold the meeting does not really matter,” Dr. Mumba said.
He also dismissed assertions by Chief Government Spokesman Kennedy Sakeni that former President Rupiah Banda attended and organised the South Africa press conference.
“I feel pity for my brother Sakeni because he is being forced to release statements that he has not written,” he said.

And Dr. Mumba says the opposition leaders are determined to continue alerting the international community to the growing human rights abuses taking place in Zambia.
Dr. Mumba revealed that the opposition leaders will soon engage the African Union and the SADC Secretariat to present a dossier of documented human rights abuses under the PF administration.
“The document we gave the Commonwealth is about 40 pages, we will document further abuses in the next dossier we will give to the AU may be 60 pages and the SADC one might around 80 pages long.”
Dr. Mumba also appealed to President Sata to desist from telling lies.
He said President Sata has developed a bad habit of telling him on his political opponents.

Earlier today President Michael Sata claimed that the South African government was not ready to give criminal asylum to former President Rupiah Banda.
President Sata explained that Mr Banda did not know that the government can have him extradited from South Africa to Zambia so that his immunity is removed.
The Head of State charged that MMD president, Nevers Mumba, his UPND counterpart, Hakainde Hichielma and Mr Banda were looking for criminal asylum in South Africa.
Mr Sata stated that out of the three opposition leaders who held a media briefing in South Africa, only United Liberal Party (ULP) leader Sakwiba Sikota was the clean.

How do you summon a person with presidential immunity to answer some allegations and yet you fail to deal with an attorney general who goes to the ACC offices with cadres and defies the very law he is supposed to uphold.

@Luundu, I am NO Layer but I do know that there are all kinds of ‘classes’ under which people can claim asylum. I do know political asylum is the most universal among them. Refugee status can also lead to being gratend asylum. Also things like violence that is not necessarily of political nature can lead to one being granted asylum in some countries. It all depends, I think, on the determination of the host country.
Rememder the WIKILEAKS leader who was/almost granted asylum(not sure what the final outcome was) by one of the South American county (can’t recall which country exactly); I am not sure under what category they thoguht he deserved asylum. In short, there are all kinds of asylum classes out there. Not sure if “criminal asylum” is one of them under South African law.
That’s a reason why we need local languages as a media of communication. Foreign language is not for the president . The 1951 UN Geneva Convention states that a person can claim asylum if running away from political persecution, torture or discrimination. basically asylum can be granted if you prove to the receiving state that your human rights have been violated by the Government of your origin. In criminal cases asylum can be granted if the country of your origin cannot guarantee the receiving state that your human rights will not be violated if returned back to your country e.g you will not face torture. The receiving state will grant you asylum on humanitarian protection not refugee status.
Saki is a lawyer, does he need an outside lawyer who cannot even come to Zambia?
This excuse by Mumba that they went to meet their lawyer is rubbish, you don’t need an international lawyer to represent you for theft and why all the opposition hired the same lawyer when they are facing different cases is beyond comprehension. Why don’t they publicise these documents so that we all know what they are writing? I do not think it is the quantity of pages that count but the quality of content. I wonder if there are diagrams and pictures in the dossier. Amsterdam is know to attack personalities. I think these documents provides a character biographies of Sata, M’membe, GBM, Kabimba, and Nchito. If complainants NM, RB, and HH did not participate the case would be credible.

Most of you claim our President is entrenching human rights abuses in the nation.Can some one bring out 10 such abuses and what the law dectates.Sata did not creat any new laws lest you want him to interven every time break the existing laws. Mind the international community will liase with foreign missions in zambia to get a confirmation of the alledged abuses and Sata will be vindicated.Since when did Robert amsterdam become HH and Mumba’s lawer apart from the fact that it was RB’ seeking your account of alledged abuses so that he can make a case against Sata to win sympathy for his and his family crimes during his rule. Okay so Sata is already labeling Dr. Mumba and HH criminals?! This does underscore the importance of what they presented to the commonwealth secretariat because it raises serious questions if the head of state can assume people to be criminals even before evidence can begin to be heard in courts. I urge all real and patriotic Zambian to stand up and be counted on the right end of the moral spectrum on this matter
What did the Presidentwant Zambians to make of his extradition speech? As for ba Banda, it is now clear that the President has decided to lift his immunity. I have no problem with the lifting of immunity if Parliament so decides. My worry is the President’s attack on the opposition parties and their leaders at every opportunity. Does he want Zambia to be a defacto one party state?? If not why is he saying if MPs leave their party, they will be given house, money, car!

I think what H.E. meant is that Mumba & HH were seeking asylum In RSA because of criminal investigations for which they ve been arrested for and are before the courts of Law in Zambia. Julian Assange the weaki leak founder who is still holed up in the Equodorian Embassy in London asked for political asylum because he claims his actions to reveal Western secrets may land him in jail in the US after UK extradites him there. Back to NEVERS & HH, they would probably ask for “political asylum” as a result of ” criminal activities” that arise from their “political activities”. Whatever hidden agenda Ba President harbours against RB, HH and Nevers Mumba, this high Office should not have mentioned the name of President Jacob Zuma in dealing with his perceived political enemies. Zuma (and Julius Malema) and rest of current and former leaders in the SADC region know very well that Sata was never a freedom fighter but a stooge of the British Govt. The mere mention of President Zuma in his public statements is the worst kind of diplomacy emerging from a Republican President.
