Human Rights activist Brebner Changala and his sister Agness this morning pleaded not guilty to trafficking in psychotropic substances.
The two pleaded not guilty to the offence when they appeared before Magistrate Alidah Chulu who set August 22 as trial date. They remain in jail as drug trafficking is non bailable in Zambia.

Police raided Changala’s home last week and found medicinal tablets. They then arrested Changala and demanded that Mr Changala’s sisters who apparently forgot the tablets in his house appear before the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officers.

Changala was driven to Kabwe where the police picked up his sister.Ms Kawandami, a nurse insisted that the drugs the police picked up and are claiming to be ecstasy are infact Vermox used to deworm children.

On Friday, the Drug Enforcement Commission formally charged Mr. Changala and his sister for trafficking in psychotropic substances.DEC officers have said they found over 25 grammes of Ecstasy, a sex enhancing drug which the duo insist was never in their possession.

Mr. Changala has been a harsh critic of President Michael Sata and the PF administration.

  1. Zambian Government and its leaders have become a circus. Why hold the man if the Drugs belonged to the sister who accepted? Only hope they never swapped the drugs just to win the case as all politically motivated cases have fallen badly. Guys watch out?? Even “MUTOTOTO” will be classified as drug if you are critical of PF?? WHAT A JOKE ZAMBIA HAS TURNED IN TO.

    • If this government and its agencies honestly think that the nation is buying into these tramped up charges, then they have totally lost the plot. What exposes the whole scheme is the fact that they are holding on to Mr Changala and yet he has nothing to do with the “drugs”. And of course the police are not allowing anyone to visit the accused. We all know what the government wants to achieve, silencing all opposing voices. Its inhumane and cruel to frame people and lock them up just to buy a semblence of normality. We are watching and you will pay a heavy price.

    • ati “drug trafficking”, thats what happens when you make up lies against someone, you even get the concepts confused, how is it drug trafficking if the drugs were in his home intead of drug possession, this governement should be serious. even if he was not set up, the offence here is not trafficking, there is no evidence of the accused trying to profit from these drugs. anywaz, PF be wise, truth is like the sun, you can keep it away for a while but its not going anywhere.

  2. THis is laughable!
If i were president, i would scrap off the Zambia police, introduce a new name with post graduate qualifications to be considered for such jobs, I would also make sure i retire all you infringing the rights of innocent Zambians in the name of following orders, definately the ACC would be first on my agenda to flush out they are all law breakers; i would surrender you to the ICC in Den Hague after matching you in chimbos for TEN years! Please leave the woman alone.

  3. Any drugs purportedly found in Mr Changala’s house apart from Vermox will be planted there by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC). Since when did Vernox transform itself into Ecstasy.

Grow up DEC and show us that you’re professionals and not a bunch of cadres. My conscious will not be clear and will resign if I were working for DEC……

  4. interesting. libodo issues. The main problems is that Police like faking Evidence. Just win a conviction

  5. Why Zambians do you defend drug traffickers. These people have finished people’s lives with their business. Changala must be locked up if found guilty. Vermox tablets? So many of them? These are dangerous crimninals who are supposed to be locked up. I will wait for the trial and the lab tests though before defending anyone.

  6. Someone must keep all these records of fake or tramped up charges against anyone critical of the PF government and its administration for the day of reckoning is coming. No matter how long it takes it will surely come; be it from one of them of an outsider. Late LPM worked with late FTJ and saw the wrong things done by FTJ and his gvnt where MCS belonged, but when the fulness of time came, some people accounted for their wrong doings.

  7. Too bad for Brebner and his sister, but no power wins over injustice, but only for a while, for glory is impersonal, immortal and everlasting.

The taste of evil is mischievous and misleading, its intensity is short lived but its consequences are transparently illuminated and its doers will radiate with its gaudiness sooner than later.

But good and truthfulness are immortal, and ever shine like the bright morning star, accompanied by the fresh breeze of social justice, in the twilight of fair play and love.

    Brebner shall prevail!

  8. Sata is on record of using mutototo from Mpezeni as his thing is failing stand and to do justice to kaseba. Is that drug abuse?

  9. Zambians have lost confidence in the Police,ACC and DEC…these have become PF terrorist organs. They should be scrapped.why should tax payers monies be spent such useless organisations? you tortured oppostion leaders, journalists, now human rights activists.no wonder some people in western province are now errecting their own flags. The current governmetn leaves much to be desired.

  10. Its only Brebner Changala, his sister and God who knows the truth. Honestly the truth will prevail at the end of the day.

  11. nonsense this is just a trap by pf to punish the changalas. Please pf stop being so vindictive and concentrate on developing our nation.

  12. It is either the Police ,Dec and Acc are incompetent or criminals now are either hiding in politics or human rights. The truth will always win.

  13. No story here. how many high officials use drugs? alot.

    that aside.

  14. Now I hear the state has decided to release Brebener and his sister as they fear being embarrassed in court. It is very tragic that our law enforcement agencies like the DEC can agree to be abused by the PF in this manner. DEC should be disbanded, it has lost all credibility because it is now being used to suppress citizens. Donors who supported DEC , see what monstor you have created. You had been warned that in Africa, non bailable offences could be abused to ‘ fix’ political enemies. The cure to this is to make the offence of drug trafficking bailable. That way, DEC will not be motivated to ‘plant’ evidence during those bogus searches.
