COPPERBELT United Party for National Development (UPND) chairperson, Elisha Matambo has been questioned by police for allegedly uttering an alarming statement over the health of President Michael Sata.

Mr Matambo was warned and cautioned at the Kitwe district police headquarters where he was summoned for interrogation yesterday.

The Copperbelt UPND chairperson was summoned for interrogation in connection with a statement attributed to him that President Sata was unwell and that the country would soon be having a presidential by-election.

Mr Matambo who arrived at the district police headquarters around 11:25 hours confirmed after the interrogations that lasted for about 40 minutes that he was warned and cautioned over the alleged alarming statement.

“Police summoned me on allegations that I said President Sata is going to die and that people should prepare for a by-election but I have denied that because it is just an allegation,” said Mr Matambo who was accompanied by his lawyer Tom Shamakamba and UPND Copperbelt spokesperson Kennedy Kalunga.

Mr Matambo described the action by the police to interrogate him as mere intimidation to which he vowed never to succumb.

He accused the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) of using the police to instill fear in him so as to silence the UPND in the province.

Copperbelt Police chief, Joyce Kasosa when contacted said Mr Matambo’s interrogation was in relation to a statement attributed to him while at a UPND meeting in Kitwe on June 7, this year, where he alleged that President Sata was ill and that the country would soon be headed for a by-election.

“Mr Matambo has been warned and cautioned over the alarming statement where the UPND is going round telling people that President Sata is ill and the country will soon be going for a by-election,” she said.

Ms Kasosa said police only warned and cautioned Mr Matambo but that investigations into the matter had since been instituted.

It is Mushotos personal interpretation of Phd English. Most probably meant “impel” but it is beyond his spelling capability.

    • UNFORTUNATE WHEN ONE IS SICK THERE IS NO OTHER WORD WE CAN USE APART FROM THE WORD WHICH EVEN OUR GRAND GRAND FATHERS HAVE BEEN USING HE IS SICK WITH NO SIGN OF RECOVERY EVEN FAMILY MEETINGS WERE CALLED WHEN ONE IS ON SUCH A CONDITION LIKE MR KATONGO

    • What is the issue with saying someone is unwell? Let us also refer to the pictures we have been seeing of late what do they say? Let us be civil, police please be professional.

    • but sata looks to be unwell, is it a secret to tell that he is unwell. it is his body structure that is running down that compels people to say he is unwell despite being availed the best medical care, the best food and a lot more facilities. if I were sata I would burst big like kambwili is

    • Waste of taxpayers’ money! If Sata is well, he should assure the nation that there’s no cause for alarm. Why are the police doing this on his behalf? Sata used to do the same thing, mocking the late Mwanawasa, day in day out.

    • Then this minister with a dirty grey beard, former labour minister should also be questioned for saying they are concerned with sata’s health recently.

    • So my dear Zambians……. How does it feel to be gauged? Very irritatingly excruciating experience I presume! Sad to be voiceless in your own country! Tumbled by the west because you are economically disadvantaged, once again tumbling to your own for a little power they gained! Next time unite for the greatest price to freedom!

    • @ Mushota
Mushota is a name from Luapula and I suspect him to be linked to some MP of Lusaka.
Anyway, we must not will someone to die but when I am sick, I need people to be closer and pray for me.
We need to know how to pray for our Leader and what do we pray for if he is in good healthy? I think we pray for him to God so that he can address the nation occasionally with all the national issues like poverty levels in rural places and just to see him talk to visit provinces and not when their is a by-election.

    • I wish we all knew what God has in store for us.

Those that wish Sata death will be shocked that he will outlive them.

I know that even if the UPND leadership thrives and have made the misfortunes of others as their core development agenda, they will never ascend to power.

The deep seated tribal and selfishness that characterise the UPND is what has driven it into the ground.
No amount of wishing Sata dead will make UPND popular and even propel into govt. Its wishful thinking and will remain just that

If UPND wants to be attractive to new members and grow into a respected party, get rid of your putrid head and embrace more than just tongas

  1. How many years, and times did sata say mwanawasa was sick, that his brain was not function well due to the accident .but I don’t remember levy instructing the police to summon sata to any police offices for warning. All over presidency is a public property so if a person occupies that office, one automatically becomes a public property both in his duties and health concerns.sata ni ma loss, wasted years.

    • Are you not aroso on one way to the grave??? Who is not going too die by the way????? For your own information, those wishing Sata died will go first and Sata will grow old to 100years. Most of you, are still very young and it is unfortunate you can speak like that. For information, your HH will die earlier than Micheal. Mark my words!

  2. Soon the nation will be shocked to hear news that ka hh has died in a fetal accident and you lunatics will be responsible for his death

  3. What is shocking is that we are seeing this and we are all quiet. The cadres sacrificing their lives for the opposition wont even benefit a thing. The people we never hear off are the ones to get all the deplomatic jobs. Permanent secretaries. Distric comissioners. And sudenly their Children will pop up claiming then dont thrive on any ones popularity.

    • Which future??? God can never anoit a tribalist or secterian leader to be president of this great republic. NEVER!!! Keep on cheating yourself my friend.

  4. Arresting a person for saying Sata is sick?!!!! Zambia Police is the most useless police force in Africa.

This is what happens when you have a dictator as a President, all key institutions only do that which pleases the dictator, however ridiculous it may. Right now those poor police officers don`t even what charge Mutambo, all they want is for Sata to hear that the guy was summoned by Police. Its a pity how a country can sink in such a short time.

  5. The defence is simple here for UPND. Sata himself said there was nothing wrong in people debating his health because he was a people’s property. Sata called other former leaders all sorts of names but was not arrested.

    VIVA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 2016

  6. Well, I am not one to delight in the illness of others let alone a Head of State but illness and like wise death is inevitable. All President Sata needs to do now is come clean, get the appropriate help he needs and take a sabbatical. Can we learn from Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro who chose not to hide their illnesses but informed their nations who in turn showed them great sympathy and humanity. Ala taba fisa ubulwele! Nomba ba Shikulu ba lufyanya pafula! Baletina ati abantu nga baishiba bala pena. They say karma is a b*tch! Kwena bashi Chilufya mwaleseka ubulwele bwakwa Mwanawasa lelo nimwe! Sad indeed!

  7. Look even if Sata was dying today, PF would still claim the presidency with any candidate and can someone tell me if this elisha and his cilema will outlive God?

  8. We are all prone to sickness. Human body can be weakened by any malaise. However, it has remarkable ability to fight off disease causing microorganisms. The defensive ability of the human body makes it possible for all of us to be alive at any particular instance. If this was not the case there would have been no humanity. The first human being would have been wiped out at the first attack of an illness early in life. Given this scenario, it is needless to emphasise that when ever we fall ill, no matter how grave, we can recover. Perception that Sata is sick and is going to die for HH and UPND to takeover reigns of power is hallucination. How many times did these dogs wish Sata to die before 2011? Many times. Sata was protected by the good LORD and today he is president of Zambia.

    • A sick president means a sick economy and a sick political system. That is more the concern of the stakeholders. It should concern us all that the president is sick.

  9. There is no smoke without fire and there is nothing “alarming” about president Sata’s illness. Those semi-illiterate police officers should be retired in the interest of the nation.

  10. honestly: what is wrong in saying someone is ill; we have all seen the president on TV or the papers; he does not look well at all; but when did this become an offence the more people try to hide this the more people are going to comment on it; the only bad I see in this is people being nasty about it; so taking someone to court or being summond by the police perplexes me; Zambia has become like North Korea now;

  11. lelo chapipata mailo chilipaiwe sata now cannot not use the office used by levy mwanawasa for fear of his words he used to him such an old man suprised the zambians for having no respect for the sick and even the dead let him go and join them they are waiting for him hahaha
