Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba is scheduled to attend the first ever USA-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington DC.

The Minister will be attending the Summit with other Senior Government officials.

Speaking ahead of the Summit, Mr. Kalaba says the meeting he is set to attend is very important as it tackle important issues of trade and investment in Africa and the commitment of America to Africa’s security and democratic development.

Mr. Kalaba says the summit will also be an opportunity to interact with other countries and forge stronger ties for cooperation with the west.

He said as Zambia continues to pursue economic diplomacy, this summit will add to the efforts Government is making in promoting trade and investment.

This is contained in a statement signed by the ministry’s Public Relations officer Alick Banda, today.

The minister said that the USA remains an important partner in the contribution to the development of African countries.

Mr. Kalaba is confident that the outcome of the Summit will be important for all African countries.

The United States will be hosting a USA-Africa Leaders Summit scheduled from 4th to 6th August 2014 in Washington DC.

US President Obama will be on hand to welcome leaders from across the African continent to the Nation’s Capital for a three-day U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit, the first such event of its kind.

The summit, the largest event any U.S. President has held with African heads of state and government, will build on the President’s trip to Africa in the summer of 2013 and it will strengthen ties between the United States and one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions.

The Meeting will discuss among other key issues trade and investment in Africa and highlight America’s commitment to Africa’s security, its democratic development and its people.

It will also highlight the depth and breadth of the United States’ commitment to the African continent, advance shared priorities and enable discussion of concrete ideas to deepen the partnership.

The Summit also aims at fostering stronger ties between the United States and Africa.

  1. And what about Dr Scott? I think Kalaba is just attending and not representing the disappeared Sata. Nothing in the article suggests that Kalaba is representing Mr Sata.

    • STATEMENT FOR POSSIBLE USE BY HIS HONOR THE VICE PRESIDENT DR. GUY SCOTT AT THE US-AFRICA LEADERS SUMMIT, ON 6TH AUGUST 2014, WASHINGTON D.C.

The United States has been a vital security and development partner for the African continent and U.S. Investment and assistance have played a very important role in helping Africa build a better future. On the hand, Africa’s global influence and importance has become significant to the U.S. strategic national interests. Proactive engagement with Africa in securing peace and stability and promoting sustainable economic and social development are fundamental for enduring mutual benefits of both Africa and the United States. In this regard, Zambia is delighted to have this opportunity to…

    • @Nostradamus
have you heard what australian engineer is says??? it better to send Obama facebook photos of Sata addressing cabinet meeting in Zambia than send Sata in wheelbarrow to the States,,,, mushebanya!!!

  2. Missed opportunity, while other countries are being represented by their presidents look who we send, one of the many “useless” ministers. I bet he was told last minute that he was attending the conference.

    • Isn’t it disappointing that the quality of representation Zambia has at such international fora is mediocre? The truth is that the office that Kalaba holds is too big for him to handle and confidently go and independently discuss the intricacies of international trade and development and associated legalities. Even at home Mr Kalaba will never stray from the scripted party response like, “the country will only develop under Sata’s vision.” I would have had a little hope being represented by the likes of Bob Ngosa Simbyakula, not withstanding the fact that he studied in the US. A Kalaba who could not understand basic environmental tennets vis-a-vis impact of mining in a pristine game park. Ma gon’ga!

  3. Confirmed! We knew Sata couldn’t attend. The guy wouldn’t know where he is and what he’s doing there. Dementia is terrible.

  4. Meanwhile Charles Katongo continues to be a social media freak through his vuvuzela George Chella,This is a milestone in this banana republic were the dull are allowed to stir a directionless ship, and a buffoon in Kabimba has the audacity to say they can only listen to 3/4 of the uneducated masses that believed their 90 day lie. There day will come when cheap lies won’t work as it is an insult to think these same people that ushered them into power have not learned their lesson.
Zambians let us get people into office that are prudent and effective this whole thing of doing the same thing and expecting a different result must STOP.

    • And the prudent thing is to stop recycling the same politicians who
Have let us down on several occasions! PF is MMD part 5!
In other words, 23 years of MMD rule after 27 years of UNIP!
I am tempted to think 27 is the cycle for Zambia. It means the time for UPND is around the corner! However, I’ll only vote UPND if they take on board Magande, Miyanda, Chipimo, Musokotwane, Caleb Fundanga, Kavindele, Muna Ndulo, Clive Chirwa, Prof Hansungule, and many more progressive minds! This country is not yet beyond salvage!

    • @Muwelewele; if you know your politics well you will know that Magande was in UPND and was Mazoka’s economic adviser until Mwanawasa came and poached Magande, who couldnt resist working with the MMD government. Clive Chirwa was a member of UPND and was one of the negotiators when UPND and PF got into the failed partnership. Chipimo and Miyanda are not like Nervers Mumba who would consider abandoning their creation for another party unless they were coming in as President or perhaps vice. In all likelihood Fundanga may have lectured HH when HH was either 1st or 2nd year at UNZA, and my assessment is that applies to the two other academics, they would prefer being non partisan but if invited to contribute to a well meaning governament they would just as any progressive would.

    • He has lost his voice, probably to cancer of the throat given his past history of HEAVY smoking! I wonder why he still wants to hold on. My wildest guess is he is selfish and has some things to hide! He doesn’t care!

  5. This is lack of seriousness!!! I really admired Kenyan President Uhuru’s outline of his program at the Summit.

    • @Kavundula, I totally agree with you. America’s influence over the World under Obama has weakened further. Third world countries have very little to benefit from this summit. This is simply a PR ploy to boost his image with unsuspecting African presidents. Zambia benefits more from China than America whose only intention is always to exploit situations in their favour. I personally can’t remember anything tangible that Obama has done for Africa in general or his late father’s country Kenya where his biological grand mother still lives.

    • @Judy, been watching too much Fox News even repeating talking points from Frank Lunz. America’s influence around the world has neither diminshed nor increased under Obama. The only thing he hasn’t done is invade another country with American troops on the ground. You must be from Alabama, Kentucky or West Virginia.

  6. This is a sad day for Zambia. All countries are represented by their respective presidents at this summit and Sata surely can’t go? You have the opportunity to meet the most powerful man in the world, Obama, and as a country we disrespect him by sending a mere minister. Even Guy Scott would have done.! Sata and PF are useless dander heads whose only purpose for Zambia is to destroy it farther.

  7. You dogs we told you not to vote for *****s but you couldn’t listen and went ahead to vote for these morons. You chose tribe instead of brains. Between Sata and HH,who has more brains? There you go,I hope this time you will vote for the latter.

  8. According to ZNBC vernacular news a few minutes ago, Guy Scott has arrived in Washington. Kalaba, Kasonde, Sichinga are part of the delegation.

  9. How about African leaders asking Obama to come here instead of the whole bunch of them trooping all the way to America to listen to him shoveling down their throats the west’s agenda for Africa. It’s time to be assertive and stop the subservience.

  10. Ha ha ha ha! I actually agree that HH could have represented us better. But Im sure govt wouldn’t ask anyone outside it to represent the country.

  11. What head of state is this Sata guy, who is not fit even to be a substitute player? What a shame! It is a disgrace for Zambia.

  12. @Wantanshi, A “KING” is never summoned! Besides the amount of money to be spent on Obama’s security is almost the same as Zambia’s and Zimbabwe’s economy combined! That money is better spent on using it for transport and accommodation for the corrupt lot known as African leaders while in the USA!

  13. Sata continues mucking about and seems to have forgotten that he is president. He is even failing to attend meetings and thinks he is there to idle around like Zambia is his own personal property. He is the worst thing ever to happen to Zambia.
    Sata is a disgrace.

  14. Sata and the USA are both MIA(missing in action).USA is belatedly realizing it is fast losing influence in Africa and even in two way trade it is lagging a distant 3rd.The paltry $900m in trade deals and Sata’s absence is a mirror reflection of lackadaisical attitude on both sides.

    • Africa is a giant play field. And no one country has home court advantage. The U.S., unfortunately, cannot afford to go back to sleep, going forward. The country has the capacity to redeem itself and recover lost ground. As for Mr. Sata, I wonder if he is worth the mention?

  15. Zambians are lazy, haters, talkative and less proactive. Fonder of talk down those they dislike and when you ask them what they have done for Zambia -its NIL. Spend much of their time frustrated, aimlessly, with their own wrong makings in countries they have chosen as their second homes.Hiding behind the keyboard ranting like hallucinating wild dogs is the best they can offer. These are the same people who talk about seeing in future young leaders leading this great nation. However, failing short of exposure which the same young leaders need. For Kalaba, its well deserved and its your luck in your life time. Mr Sata has over time gave opportunities to each ministers to act as a president. Kalaba its your time and do not listen to these armchair critics with little brains / full of hate.

  16. Sata didn’t attend because he thought it was a Facebook meeting.Cabbage president with no sense of direction, what a waste. He’d be there to embarrass us anyway so he better stay away.
