The British High Commissioner to Zambia, James Thornton, has announced that the UK Government has substantially increased the number of places for Zambians who wish to study in the UK under the Chevening Scholarship programme.

The High Commissioner said Zambians who have studied at top UK universities are now using their skills and knowledge to contribute significantly to Zambia’s development.

At a pre-departure briefing event for two Chevening Scholars on 21 August, Mr Thornton said:

“Britain has a global reputation for excellence in the field of education and skills, rooted in our centuries-old yet forward-looking educational system. It’s a tradition of learning that we continue to share with the world, including Zambia. An assessment last year indicated that four of the six best universities in the world were British.

Since 1985, over 150 Zambians have studied in the UK under the Chevening Scheme. I am delighted that next year we expect to be able to offer fourteen Chevening Scholarships to Zambians, compared to the two offered this year”.

Earlier in the day the High Commissioner attended a send-off event for recipients of Commonwealth Scholarships, which are also funded by the British Government. This year twenty have been awarded, up from sixteen in 2013. Other schemes available to Zambians include Rhodes, Beit Trust, Canon Collins and Africa Fellowship Trust scholarships.

Mr Thornton said the Chevening Alumni Association had also been revived. A Commonwealth Alumni Association is expected to be launched later this year. He urged scholars and fellows to join the Associations.

Mr Thornton gave examples of Zambian Chevening Scholars serving in top positions in Zambia and elsewhere. These included Justice Florence Lengalenga, Supreme Court Judge; Stephen Kampyongo, Home Affairs Deputy Minister; and Chibamba Kanyama, former Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation Director General and now working at the International Monetary Fund.

  1. Can’t wait to hear some I D I O T I C PF Kaponyas, Ministers or party cadre brag that this is because of PF great policies. Last time I heard some f o o l called Yaluma bragging on the radio that Guy Scott sat close to Obama because Zambia had a good governance record. What Yaluma failed to relase was that sitting was arranged alphebetically and of the countries there, Z and U were close.

    • I don’t want this place to be infected with too much Zambians or else being in the UK will be undermined and some people will think being here is my an achievement.

A sad day indeed for some of is here if I am being honest

      Thanks

    • ba mushota, you need rebasing,, especially were the UK is involved, it seems you are suffering from a psychological disorder known as hood rich in the USA. but since you are Zambian, yours must be village rich. but then, i was not there in the beginning so what can i say

    • Look, I think you missed the point.

What I am saying is, being here is an achievement, people find it hard to
Win a place in University, afford a ticket, pay for tuition, interact with whites.
Leading to citizenship which brings benefits free from Government, you accent changing
Being the envy of most Zambians back home, with them whispering

‘She is from the UK’ It makes some of proud and from my point of view makes me feel like
I am blessed and not one of them.

So these free scholarships will take away that pride, that identification and that envy

That is my problem, it is about understanding what I am saying don’t just vote me DOWN

      Thanks

    • exactly my point, you want to be the only one if not one among the few to feel you are blessed and feel the pride of walking with you head up high, knowing that you are there.which leads me to ask you how it really is like to feel you are the one blessed more than others, looking at others and be able to talk about it like i feel i am more blessed than you? and if you have a choice now, are you so determined to keep it that way, as in the most blessed in you zed neighborhood or you wish to see others rise with you ?

    • I don not think we need these anymore,we have Robert Makasa and each province will have a University soon,So Britain can shove the scholarships up their (censored)

    • @ achimwene,
this is not dry humour, this is exatly mushota and if you were to meet him even in person, its exactly what he would say, its time people took him serious for what he says

    • Letters Z and U are close but not next to each other. Obama was seated next to Guy. The closest should have been Uganda. Liar!

  2. These arrogant British now that they have noticed that the number of foreign students from non EU countries has dropped drastically due to their right wing policies and students opting for student – friendly countries….they have started to feel the effects. Their universities are crying out for non EU student ad they can not depend on their own subsidied students who opt for mickey mouse courses like Geography and Graphic design.

    • So what is your point? These scholarships are paid for by the British. Its not like the Zambian government will be footing the bill. And for your information British students now pay the same market rates like foreign students. There’s no longer a two tier tuition system where you had British and EU students paying half the cost of what a foreign non- EU student was paying in tuition for a course. If the tuition fee for a degree is £9000; everyone pays the same irrespective of whether they are British, EU or foreign. They are no longer subsidised. The next time make sure your rant makes sense.

  3. thank you but we need undergraduate places as well under these programs, not just post graduate places especially in the medical field and not only in law, economics and philosophy.

    • Scholarships is one of the cheapest ways to market a country and the easiest ways to tap into that lucrative foreign student market. …one student on scholarship is able to attract 2 full time fee paying students the western countries have mastered this…look at Perth, Australia.

    • since we cannot offer scholarship at our own universities and we are in need of the education which they are offering, we wont sit back refuse the offer just because we do not want them to expand their business. we have no option for now, the best we can do is go there get the education so that we have the opportunity to do likewise aswel in the next 10 to 15 yrs.

    • But how can we do the same later when we always decide to stay in the foreign country we studied after completing our education and trying hard to get citizenship. who then does this education benefit? Zambia? i doubt it!!

  4. Good move education is important let Zambia move forward in important issues politics is for politicians and its a full time job for them .

  5. Kusiyana siyana kwa ma achievements, Depending on what you are doing in the UK, others its an achievement going to the UK and you brag ati twikala UK.

  6. If the British govt really want to help us let them instead convert those funds into sponsoring 100 underprivilaged school kids from grade 1 up to grade 12. A single individual studying abroad will benefit a few that same money used to educate 1 already privilaged person to study abroad can educate 5 or 10 poor kids that normally might not receive any formal education right from primary to secondary school. This is just elitism at work!

    • what you need to understand is that a scholarship is like a prize, that someone has to earn regardless of their background, privilaged or not but based on their work or performance especially academically and in some cases sports. what you are suggest ing is a job for charities and the government which am pretty sure they are doing as there is free education atleast from grade 1 to is it 7 or someting like that.

  7. these white monks are full of bonkers. they had locked me up for illegal immigration issues and the inmates had taken advantage of my oily bottom. you shall send your children to hell fellow Zambians. evans mfula at evaduco reporting from lusaka

    • I am all woman, I am dating a white person, yourself?

      By the way I have
MBA, CIMA, ACCA, Msc, Bsc, Bsc Applied Accounts and pursuing a PhD

      Yourself?

      Thanks

  8. mushota its really embarrassing that those words are coming from you it is even hard to believe that you are human.so you want to be enjoying alone there let your friends enjoy also.and by the way does it matter if you are dating a white guy its nothing and those masters and bachelors you are boosting about if you were to be in zambia you were not going to have all that.uk education is not hard to pass believe me.think like a human ben for a second.

    • Mushota ubufi uleke. Your comments do not seem to be from someone with all those qualifications you have listed. Are you doing these online fake courses ? If you truly have them, I would not enrol at that Uni or college, because you seem to have not a lot of skills that are required to hold a sensible debate.

  9. I’ve noticed that this troll called Mushota is usually one of the first muppets to unleash her vile demented thoughts. For someone who has gained all those so called qualifications at your age means you either stated school at the age of 2 when you were still in your terry nappies, or you found some Nigerian to help you forge your certificates. There are thousands of people who pass comments on this site and are far more educated than you. This so called PHD will never happen as your Nigerian is demanding more money this time round. You seem to be glued to this site pouring out so much rubbish form your small mind . I have lived in the UK for over 40 years and hope to never run into an ex kalipined slapper like you who thinks she is so up there because you’ve bagged some white hobo!

  10. This is all nonsense by the UK gov’t. They want ‘in’ to lucrative investment projects in Zambia. They hope to take away from the Chinese, so they can come here and siphon off Zambian resources for little return to us. We are easy pickings because of our politicians who wish to retire in UK rather than Beijing! Don’t be fooled, this is typical British cunning. THE FACTS ARE as Mushota knows very well, British education has declined because of their decision to increase fees in effort to reduce their responsibilities. Universities are charging extreme fees, that most ordinary Zambians who want to privately sponsor their children to study here will not be able to. Not all Zambians will be able to win these scholarships.

  11. All British universities are providing poor content in most of their Degrees because of cuts. The education is fast becoming the worst in the world. The idea that the British gov’t educate our future Leaders is worrying. Looks like an attempt to reassert their colonial rule. This stinks. THE FACTS ARE as Mushota knows very well, British education has declined because cuts to education.

  12. Only 150 people since 1985? America, Russia, China, Netherlands, etc, have done far better than our colonial masters!!

  13. LOL, hahaha this Mushota thing, love it or loathe it, sometimes you really can’t help it but to laugh. Is this person for real? Man, Bembas were correct when they said “Chalo in bantu”. Nothing tends to surprise me anymore as I have seen it all, but this Mushota really takes it to another level. I mean you gotta admire the consistency, it takes great effort to be who she/he is.

For those ranting about British scholarships, people please learn to appreciate free things. Why do you have to question the motives all the time, they owe us nothing after all, regardless of the motives. The luck ones will have their lives changed in a +ve way. What we should be ranting about is whether these scholarships are being offered fairly without corruption by our own people.

  14. Your Excellence, that number is not enough, remember the Chinese are awarding 4 times your number. If you don’t double the number, in two years time we may decide to give the Chinese 120 years to colonize us, while we only gave you 60 years….. kekekeke…..

  15. @saba, concur. Its all about re colonising. Hilary Clinton warned us to be careful. UK education..The worst in the western hemisphere due to cuts, only substandard content in degrees. Human Rights abusers. No Housing. Racist whites voting for repugnant politicians like Nigel Farage borderline facist. They want in to our resources and to destablise worthy Chinese efforts for Zambia. Thornton and his Cheveny Scholarship should just stop it with the lies.

  16. Increased for misters and permanent secretaries children who cares. I have never head anyone get these scholarships on merit.
