Former President Rupiah Banda’s eldest son Andrew says he has not betrayed his father by choosing to endorse UPND presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema for the January 20 2015 presidential election.

Andrew Banda on Sunday at the Kanyama UPND rally publicly endorsed Mr Hichilema as the only candidate who can take Zambia forward.

He explained during a news briefing in Lusaka that a number of people have been calling him and threatening his life since he made the endorsement.

“From Sunday evening when news went round that Andrew has endorsed HH, a lot of people have been verbally abusing me with some openly threatening my life. Some have been calling me ati Koma Ulichipuba (you are mad) that am a traitor and I have betrayed the Old man,” Andrew said.

He said, “I have not betrayed my father and it is unfair to label me a traitor. I have not been consulted over my father’s come back and I don’t agree that he should return to active politics.”

Andrew said all those that are criticising his decision to campaign for Mr Hichilema are not being sincere.

“I love my father very much. His blood flows in my body and no one can separate us but there is a lot of democracy in my family and I have made a democratic choice to support Mr Hichilema. People have been spreading lies that I insulted my father during the Kanyama rally, that is a lie. I cannot insult my father even if I differ with him.”

Andrew also predicted that his father will lose the January 20 presidential election if he goes ahead to contest.

“The old man is being misled by the same people that made him lose elections. They are cheating him that he can win the January election. He lost to the PF with all the instruments of power at his disposal. How do they expect him to win this time around?” Andrew asked.

Mr Rupiah Banda is today expected to launch his presidential campaigns on the MMD ticket and outline the objectives for his political come back.

Mr Banda’s Spokesperson Lucky Mulusa told Journalists that the former President will launch his campaigns at Chrismar Hotel in Lusaka at 10 Hours.

    • If he is not a traitor, then he should shut the f*ck up. He has already said it once and we understand the reasoning behind his actions. Him trying to defend himself over and over again makes it look like his conscience wont let him have any rest at night. I for one supported his actions, am all about liberty but this again from brother Andrew Banda is really irritating me.

  1. have you visited your mother Thandiwe in the hospital? That woman was good to you and your father and you all abandon her in the hospital and carry on with politics as usual. Karma is a b.i.tch!

    • What do you want princess? I hope you are not expecting him to always be at the bedside as visiting doesn’t take long.

  2. He is actually trying to protect his father. Politics is dirty business and maybe his father wants to come back for the wrong reasons. The way things are going he is the best we’ve got.

  3. Andrew I am very impressed with your reasoning. When your father was misled last time by political wolves, you stood by his side when the same wolves ran away from him. Now they have gone back to mislead him again and people expect you to blindly follow him? Despite him being your father, you are an individual who is an adult by the end of the day and make independent decisions. Yes differ with your father but continue respecting him as you have always done my man.

  4. RB is a traitor and definitely he won’t stand omit MMD ticket. We r sending him 2 the gutters! Leave Andrew alone. This year ALL bring backs failed. Bring back Girls Failed, bring back Malaysia Failed, bring back President failed, bring back RB, Failed! Failed!

  5. Zambians know why you are suporting HH. Tomoro it will be RB suporting HH. Eastern, luapula, northern, muchinga and CB 80% PF. lusaka, central 60% PF. 40% from others. The chapter for Tongas and Bembas is closed untill they learn to respect other tribes

    • Wisest post on here. Bembas and Tongas are the most tribalistic people groups Zambia has. It is good others see this :).

  6. Andrew is a realist. He is not a tribalist like some of you. In 2001 he supported Chilaba and MMD against his father who was stuck with UNIP. in 2001 he supported Mazoka and UPND He is good at reading the mood.

  7. Calculated move Andrew. If RB wins then the family is protected and all cases disappear. If HH wins you get appointed to something. RB’s cases disappear and he’s protected.

  8. Iwe Nubian Princess. Sibananilekelele. Ni family stategy. We’re trying to spread the risks. Look at the Kaundas. Chimudala; zimaningi, Panji, hallo Pathetic fool, uja winangu, unip. Balanced ka. Kikiki

  9. Andrew is old enough to make his choices. He is a political nonentity. All those surrounding HH are desperate for political employment. In the same vein, Rupiah Banda is old enough to decide what he wants to do, just the way a voter has a choice. No need to comment insults on Lusaka Times, politicians don’t even read your comments. What is advisable is use your vote wisely, don’t throw it for fake promises & a chitenge or t-shirt like most of you do!

    • Ifitenge fyena boss tukafwala. If its me, now that its farming season, I will collect as many as I can from all political parties and distribute them equally among my extended family in eastern, southern and northern province . They have much more use for them when going to the fields. Vote ni pa mutima. All the tribalists can suck on that.

  10. Yes you are not a traitor because as an adult you are entitled to your own political opinions. however, it could have been better if you had discussed this with your dad at home rather than telling the public that he is being misled.

  11. Iwe Andrew, what is the problem with your father? Can you advise him correctly. He wants to lose even a pinch of trust people have for him. He should just stand behind as a well respected former head of state. He wants to be rubbing shoulder with young ones on the campaign stage making empty and unrealistic promises to the people forgetting what was happening yesterday when he was both president and minister of foreign affairs. Advise him correctly please!!!!!

  12. Andrew Banda looks older than RB. Is he the elder brother or what? Traitor he is indeed but don’t blame him, he is supporting a brother whose paternal roots are unknown. Anyway, I know why, Andrew was born outside wedlock. He is not the son of Hope Makulu Banda. This man is a convict tefyo.

  13. If I father was going to stand for presidency and personally I know that he is not fit to lead the nation I wouldn’t support him. I guess Andrew is a man of integrity. We need to learn and make wise decisions. Brave Andrew!

  14. You’re hedging your bets Bandas. Whichever party makes it, mwalya again. I don’t buy this faux-reasonableness.
We know, free money is irresistible.

  15. I would like to find out if Andrew went see his father to tell him he was backing HH? What is wrong with dialogue Mr. Andrew Banda? You Mr. Banda have always been an opportunist!
