Zambia: Crocodile claims boy’s life on Lake Kariba

A 13 year-old boy has been killed by a crocodile on Lake Kariba in Sinazongwe district.
Nangombe ward Councilor Robson Sialukowa confirmed the development to ZANIS that the boy identified as Junior Siamangaba of Kaduku village in Chief Sinazongwe’s area was killed while fishing on Lake Kariba.

Mr Sialukowa said the boy went fishing with his friends and the crocodile grabbed him while he was on the shores of the Lake.

He said the boy whose body is laying in Maamba Hospital mortuary was a grade five pupil at Siamuyala Basic School.

Last December a 42 year old man was killed by a crocodile on Lake Kariba barely a week after when another 12 year old boy was killed.

The Ward Councilor noted that people in the area have continued to leave in fear of the crocodiles that have become a danger to their lives.

He has appealed to the Zambia Wild Life Authority (ZAWA) to quickly move in to crop the reptiles before more lives are lost.

Ba moze, It’s supposed to be a ‘food chain’ but people are eating less of this ‘Hopani’ delicacy and instead, settling for T-bone nenkoko. As a result, it’s over eating us. We are the ones who are supposed to be on them crocks….ninshi yabalansa. l-)

Just outlaw fishing in these danger spots and put up poster or borads warning of these creatures, please culling is a long term measure as it will need money, as per Zed anything needing money has to wait for donors. My condolensces to the family.

    THE INVESTIGATOR says:

The solution does not lay in ZAWA cropping the crocs. Its a question of the locals being aware of the dangers of fishing in waters which are heavily infested with crocs. May be the best reason would for Zawa and the local croc farmers come with a project to fence of certain places so that crocs do not continue to kill human being in that area. There is a big conflict between human beings and the crocs. No matter how many times Zawa will try to crop the crocs it will not yield any lasting results. Those reptiles have reproduced into thousands and the fact that some commercial farmers release some crocs into the lake makes the whole situation kokayi.
