Minister of Science Brian Chituwo says there is need to unlock the scientific potential that exist in Zambia and translate it into short and long term economic benefit in the country.

Dr. Chitwo said there is need to reposition scientific initiatives and venture into an innovation-led economy which will be driven by a highly skilled, creative and competitive work force in the country.

He said in order to carry out such a transformation, there is need to have a lot of researchers, scientists and engineers.

He said this in a speech read for him by his Deputy Crispin Musosha at the Youth Inventors Fund and Strategic Researcher Fund, Grant and awards giving ceremony held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka today.

Dr. Chituwo said government will continue to provide an enabling platform for this transformation through various initiatives and funding for scientific research and innovation.

He added that this why government has developed the strategies research and youth inventors funds, which are under his ministry.

He pointed out that the common goal of these funds is to promote science and technology innovations and development in the country.

Dr. Chituwo noted that the two funds should address the challenges of developing a new generation of researchers, inventors and engineers working on matters of national relevance.

  1. Dr. Brig. General, Hon Minister Chituwo! Why does RB keep tossing you from one Ministry to another? No sooner do you begin to grasp the operations of one ministry than you are moved to another one, to undertake familiarisation tour.

  2. *-:) I have stated this time after time. Innovative and experimental science should be combined. Release funds for youth creations aswell. Imagine the potential like the Banda lad that electrified his entire village from an old bicycle wheel windmill generator. Powered his whole entire village and as of now has a prestigious scholarship at a prep. Guided expansive horizon college in South Africa.=d>

  3. [-( blah blah blahhhhhhhh, GRZ ever talks the talk when are you going to walk the walk??????? we have researchers, engineers, scientists & all but the problem is GRZ’s failure to give em jobs. Ba Chituwo where are going to get your funding from???? i’m smelling a Chinese loan here.

  4. A very good lecture from our versatile Minister Hon. Chituwo.

However, much as I agree with the emphasis on innovative science, I feel that a lot still needs to be done in terms of patents. Those of you who watched a documentary a few years ago on BBC about 2 Kenyan doctors who discovered what could have nearly been a vaccine against HIV only to find out that the British pharmacists who had sponsored the project secretly applied to be acknowledged as the patents from the UK patent office – know what I’m talking about.

  5. In South Korea, their govt embarked on a massive expansion in Agriculture and universal education, once they were able to feed the people, they ventured into skills training and the story changed, you have Hyundai,Kia,etc.these zambians politicians love to be in the news and make themselves look foolish,if you feed the nation, the surplus you sale to bring money,Chituwo is talking about things he’s read in the Economist, what Zambia needs is a powerful Agric ministry to design new ways of crop production and implementation, these guys are just blowing hot air!!!!
