There is an increased cultivation of canabis in rural areas on a commercial basis. A Senior government official in Mazabuka has attributed the increase in the number of villagers cultivating Cannabis on commercial basis to lack of Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officer in the district..
Acting Mazabuka District Commissioner, Wilson Siadunka said in Mazabuka today some villagers are now cultivating cannabis especially in Chikakankata area of Chieftainess Mwenda on commercial basis due to the absence of DEC officers.
Mr. Siadunka told ZANIS in an interview that Chiefs have now resorted to arresting suspected drug traffickers that are surrendered to Police.
He said inspite of his office securing accommodation space for DEC, two years ago, the Commission has failed to send officers .
”DEC asked for office accommodation two years ago and we secured but our surprise they have gone for good.
This is despite the alarming cases of cultivation and trafficking of cannabis in my district,” complained Siadunka
Mr Siadunka said the reluctance by DEC to open an office in the district is frustrating traditional rulers who have pledged to join hands in the fight against drug trafficking.
Meanwhile, Mr Siadunka has commended Chieftainess Mwenda for declaring war against drug trafficking in her Chiefdom.
He said the arrest of dangerous drug traffickers in her Chiefdom deserves commendation because it is in line with government policy of drug free country.
And Chieftainess Mwenda in a separate interview told ZANIS, warned that she will suspend all village headmen linked to the cultivation of cannabis on commercial basis.
She complained the cultivation of cannibis in her chiefdom has reached alarming proportions as some villagers had stopped growing maize in preference for Dagga.
” I think people are reaping heavily in Dagga business, but am not going allow this to happen because some youths who smoke Dagga end up running Mad,” said the Chieftainess.
Just allow villagers to grow this for export. Just legalise the trade and export to countries like Holland. Besides Zambian Dobo is the best and would fetch a premium on the internation market. And before all you self-proclaimed moral policemen jump on me, consider this. Beer has caused more trouble, deaths, etc than Dobo and yet we have failed to outlaw it it. There are countries where Dobo is legal and lets export to them and help get our villagers out of poverty. If the industry is legalised and controlled, it would be hard for this product to find it’s way on the local market. Today it’s everywhere. And he who has never seen a leaf of dagga in zambia, cast the first stone on me.

sometime back at a wakeshop in Berlin, I had a discussion with a foriegn minister from one of the latin american countries and we happened to discuss drugs. He frankly told me that most poor people in the rural areas of that country lived on growing drugs, and there was nothing the government could do otherwise they would die of hunger. Period. We have seen how people lost employment after Agriflora went down when the Chisanga drug saga was exposed. The fact is that drugs sustained Agriflorer’s operations and the govt shd have just kept quiet. What should be topped is local consumption and not production for export. Cmon guys, wake up!
i worked for dec for 3yrs in lusaka,there are a lot of officers in lusaka who should be sent into rural areas and do the job they were employed for,suprisenly most of them are stuck at luaska doing nothing but chasing after smokers with 0.5gms of cannabis when they are supposed to arrest the suppiers who cultivate the drug in large scales

If the government wants a drug-free policy, they must outlaw alcohol and nicotine because these are also dangerous drugs. It would be wiser to legalise dagga like cigarettes and tax it. Then the government could get some money from it instead of putting money in the pockets of the criminals. There is so much money in drugs that the crime bosses can always pay off the officials. Much better to legalise it and tax it. The Americans tried to ban alcohol in the 1930s and they failed. Banning dagga will always fail.
I agree with #21 besides the DEC boses have been drug peddling while claiming to root out the evil and at the same time drawing money from taxpayers as salaries for work they do not do. A legalised model would ensure the drugs are not sold to anyone by companies allowed to trade in this business and if they do they lose their license, just like they do with companies that sell explosives.

Zambian climate and conditions are ideal for growing dagga. The government should be encouraging small farmers by providing loans and grants to help them produce a consistent quality.

I tried once.Guyz this stuff is bad.Chibuku is better.My brother told me it gives extra power but when i tried it with him,he couldnt count up to 4 in grade 9.And i slept almost 24 hrs and ate like hell the following day.
I recommend that GRZ should only legalise it when everyone can afford a good bed and enough food.

Wikipedia has a quit large amount of information regarding all industrial uses of Cannabis. A search term there could be “hemp”.
The industrial value of Cannabis is buried in discussion about the recreational use of the plant.
That’s how they keep countries like Zambia down.
They scream about the so called dangers of Cannabis, but whispers about the medical part and hardly talks at all about the industrial part.
Only a government with guts and true ability to act and not just talk, could use the plant, instead of suppressing it.

Really though, marijuana is a competitor for beer and alcohol, which is why those companies are against it. It is a competitor for cotton and it’s twin, the chemical industry, which is why they are against it. Hemp is a competitor for the woodpulp paper industry, which is why they are against it.

To grow, it needs barely any fertilizer or pesticide. It grows on and stabilizes soils that are too poor for other agriculture, so future generations can grow maize on it.

From a US perspective, its a peaceful march to promote the decriminalisation of marijuana, as a industrial plant, as well as a medicine and a recreational herb. Many also support the idea about the cannabis plant being free, free as in free beer.
If I am not wrong, in Zambia you might add inn a few more critical needs.
Such as opening up future areas for food production.
