Cultivation of Cannabis in Rural Areas on the Increase

Share

There is an increased cultivation of canabis in rural areas on a commercial basis. A Senior government official in Mazabuka has attributed the increase in the number of villagers cultivating Cannabis on commercial basis to lack of Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officer in the district..

Acting Mazabuka District Commissioner, Wilson Siadunka said in Mazabuka today some villagers are now cultivating cannabis especially in Chikakankata area of Chieftainess Mwenda on commercial basis due to the absence of DEC officers.

Mr. Siadunka told ZANIS in an interview that Chiefs have now resorted to arresting suspected drug traffickers that are surrendered to Police.

He said inspite of his office securing accommodation space for DEC, two years ago, the Commission has failed to send officers .

”DEC asked for office accommodation two years ago and we secured but our surprise they have gone for good.

This is despite the alarming cases of cultivation and trafficking of cannabis in my district,” complained Siadunka

Mr Siadunka said the reluctance by DEC to open an office in the district is frustrating traditional rulers who have pledged to join hands in the fight against drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, Mr Siadunka has commended Chieftainess Mwenda for declaring war against drug trafficking in her Chiefdom.

He said the arrest of dangerous drug traffickers in her Chiefdom deserves commendation because it is in line with government policy of drug free country.

And Chieftainess Mwenda in a separate interview told ZANIS, warned that she will suspend all village headmen linked to the cultivation of cannabis on commercial basis.

She complained the cultivation of cannibis in her chiefdom has reached alarming proportions as some villagers had stopped growing maize in preference for Dagga.

” I think people are reaping heavily in Dagga business, but am not going allow this to happen because some youths who smoke Dagga end up running Mad,” said the Chieftainess.

  1. Just allow villagers to grow this for export. Just legalise the trade and export to countries like Holland. Besides Zambian Dobo is the best and would fetch a premium on the internation market. And before all you self-proclaimed moral policemen jump on me, consider this. Beer has caused more trouble, deaths, etc than Dobo and yet we have failed to outlaw it it. There are countries where Dobo is legal and lets export to them and help get our villagers out of poverty. If the industry is legalised and controlled, it would be hard for this product to find it’s way on the local market. Today it’s everywhere. And he who has never seen a leaf of dagga in zambia, cast the first stone on me.

  2. regalise dagga bane mwana.why arrest inocent pipo while Shakas is still free nemipoto sha-screw women…shaa, atense..

  3. pipo in rural are not benefiting from the mines thats why they are doing that to make ends meeting.Ba govt pls wake up and empower rural pipo where you get 3000 votes out of 200 registered voters.Shaa mukwayi..atanse !!!

  4. #1, I agree with you even though I have never seen a leaf of this weed. If dagga can be the second largest Fx earner, why not go for it?

#2, Shakafuswa is more of the wrong doer than those innocent villagers who are toiling to feed themselves.

#3, In Chavuma Dr.HELPMSC got 12,000 votes out of 3500 registered voters. and you wonder who Mwai Kibaki and Bob Mugabe’s mentor is!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. sometime back at a wakeshop in Berlin, I had a discussion with a foriegn minister from one of the latin american countries and we happened to discuss drugs. He frankly told me that most poor people in the rural areas of that country lived on growing drugs, and there was nothing the government could do otherwise they would die of hunger. Period. We have seen how people lost employment after Agriflora went down when the Chisanga drug saga was exposed. The fact is that drugs sustained Agriflorer’s operations and the govt shd have just kept quiet. What should be topped is local consumption and not production for export. Cmon guys, wake up!

  6. i worked for dec for 3yrs in lusaka, there are a lot of officers in lusaka who should be sent into rural areas and do the job they were employed for, suprisenly most of them are stuck at luaska doing nothing but chasing after smokers with 0.5gms of cannabis when they are supposed to arrest the suppiers who cultivate the drug in large scales

  7. Pse pipo leave Shaka alone. He has nothing to do with Mbanje. The only abominable sin he has committed is to be the Pres’ nephew, but that cant be changed. The guy does work that is why he is in that posn. It is on merit. Who amongest you has never said worse things than what he said. Let the law take its course and for sure if he did anything wrong he will be punished accordingly. For now keep quiet. He is a hero.

  8. He is hero in women’s underwear! We need people with spines in government, putting medicines in hospitals. What has Shakafuswa done for you lately?

  9. #11 You are hopeless what has he performed apart from screwing your girlfriend and giving you money for screwing her,no wonder those praises!!!
Frankly speaking i haven’t seen what the Ministry of Finance is doing. Can someone tell me?

  10. shakef####ker should not be lift alone, he brought it on himself, so he thinks he can take zadians for a ride, hell no, but agains seems that the family tree has won for now, they are only two ways in zambia , LPM WAY OR NO WAY, LPM WAYS WINS AGAIN JUST FOR NOW,just has it was during chiluba time so will LPM AND his family tree be, those fools bootlicking him will turn against him, LPM open your eyes

  11. What`s the difference between cannabis and antidepressant(prozac) pills?Pharmaceutical companies simply want to monopolise this kind of business.

    Welcome back!!!!
I had also taken a break for a while and only came back about a week ago.
Only HK and PRAGMATIST are still around but the rest are gone.Due to impersonations SAGE changed his ID to SOCRATES.The rest are new bloggers.

  14. If the government wants a drug-free policy, they must outlaw alcohol and nicotine because these are also dangerous drugs. It would be wiser to legalise dagga like cigarettes and tax it. Then the government could get some money from it instead of putting money in the pockets of the criminals. There is so much money in drugs that the crime bosses can always pay off the officials. Much better to legalise it and tax it. The Americans tried to ban alcohol in the 1930s and they failed. Banning dagga will always fail.

  15. I agree with #21 besides the DEC boses have been drug peddling while claiming to root out the evil and at the same time drawing money from taxpayers as salaries for work they do not do. A legalised model would ensure the drugs are not sold to anyone by companies allowed to trade in this business and if they do they lose their license, just like they do with companies that sell explosives.

  16. Blaming the culprints wont do.Government s failure to have youth developmental and sustanable agricultural programms is one area of concern. Our government has run out of ideas and we are reaching a dead end thus people are resorting to all means of making cash.

  17. Zambian climate and conditions are ideal for growing dagga. The government should be encouraging small farmers by providing loans and grants to help them produce a consistent quality.

  18. What difference is a DEC officer going to make.Is there no police station in these areas? Is the DC implying that police are involved in the cultivation?
They have sworn the same oath of allegiance and service.Leave the villagers alone!!!!!!!!!!

  19. It is better to be poor and sober rather than have more money and be drug addicts. If Chamba is not good for Zedians it is Certainly not good for anyone else.

  20. I used to think like #1 until when I came to UK and saw how drugs can ravage society. After taking drugs, children as young as 12 kill with knives and guns with no remorse. I totally agree with #28 SAY NO TO DRUGS

  21. #28 & #30 I hope you guys dont smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol because if you do you are in no position to speak Do you know that those 2 drugs cause more damage tham mbanje and all the other drugs put together?

  22. I tried once.Guyz this stuff is bad.Chibuku is better. My brother told me it gives extra power but when i tried it with him,he couldnt count up to 4 in grade 9.And i slept almost 24 hrs and ate like hell the following day.
I recommend that GRZ should only legalise it when everyone can afford a good bed and enough food.

  23. #34 There is an old saying “dope will get you through times of no money, better than money will get you through times of no dope”

  24. But honestly, the stuff is makali one hey!!! When i used to smoke it i could work in the field from 6 to 6 and would face my sister in law….aaah bane i survived because of the leaves!!! Viva mbanje…

  25. Yes me bredrin, a Ganja time again! The international Herb is a blessing to our nation, just face reality. How dem claim to be concerned about the youths when the whisky and vodka weh dem import does more harm to de youths! Plus Ganja is the only effective cure for Glaucoma, you never know, eh? Herb is Medicine!

  26. Mmmm…I should consider settling in rural Zambia when my terms expires. I guess I would love it better than Texas.

  27. Its probably not very well known i Zambia, but “the trick of the trade” for Amsterdam as a tourist magnet, is the decriminalisation of Marihuana(spelled European way)
Thats why its hard to get a hotell room in Amsterdam.
Thats way all global companies have their courses and confernces there. At least within computer business.

Cant weed be used as bio fuel?

    Answer: Yes

Mwenda is right, but wrong about youngs going “mad”.
Right because more youngs are going mad, but thats also without marihuana. So wrong.

    Madness comes from other substances.

Swiss University reports positive on use of marihuana and mental conditions.

  28. with the economic worries taking hold of the world we live in live,it could be the only source of income for the villagers to have food on their table and send their children to school. If you have to check wat agwan inna Holland,it is even making their economy boom.By the way Ba DEC or whoever, don´t ever mistake or label weed as a drug cos it is the healing of the nation.

  29. Legalise the herb for the pipo to burn!!!! Look at the inequality and poverty in rural zambia. It shows that the national cake is not shared equally and if there is prosperity to talk about its for the few elite and not common man. So why doest DEC/GOV get into export arrangement with countries that have allowed it for medicinal purpose? I see no reason why growers should be harrased. its just making the price go wild.I know what usage mean and it cant get you high at all. Viva growers!!!

  30. I hear the highest grade of Zambian weed comes from Eastern Province. Is this true? Them say when you smoke it, you even see de birds flying backwards an hear de plants whispering.

  31. Sure looks like the eastern part of Zambia is the place to start then?

Remember. The Cannabis plant also is about food, fibres for cloths, fuel.

Rudolph Diesel who invented the diesel engine never expected humans to take out diesel from oil, but rather from the Cannabis plant and so forth.
Today we rape the earth for all resources instead of using renewable resources to make biofuel and other materials that can compete with plastic etc.

So because the US businessman involved in petroleum, plastics, timber and paper industries, have understood that Cannabis is a threat towards their monopoly, Zambia is to lay down on their knees and accept that the plant who can change Zambia… Is illegal

  32. Most information about hemp, cannabis or whatever you like to name it, can be found around on the net.

Wikipedia has a quit large amount of information regarding all industrial uses of Cannabis. A search term there could be “hemp”.

The industrial value of Cannabis is buried in discussion about the recreational use of the plant.

That’s how they keep countries like Zambia down.

They scream about the so called dangers of Cannabis, but whispers about the medical part and hardly talks at all about the industrial part.

Only a government with guts and true ability to act and not just talk, could use the plant, instead of suppressing it.

I wish all intelligent Zambians good luck with this…

  33. Legalize it, don’t criticize it. 🙂

Really though, marijuana is a competitor for beer and alcohol, which is why those companies are against it. It is a competitor for cotton and it’s twin, the chemical industry, which is why they are against it. Hemp is a competitor for the woodpulp paper industry, which is why they are against it.

Hemp is the solution to so many problems – unemployment, soil erosion, and the blues. There are a thousand products that can be made from hemp – clothes, shoes, paper, cardboard, rope. To grow, it needs barely any fertilizer or pesticide. It grows on and stabilizes soils that are too poor for other agriculture, so future generations can grow maize on it.

  34. best we make it legal alot of us made money out of it, we are all broke now coz of the heavy handed DEC.FTJ likes it.Sata depends on it.Levy try it you might just manage to get up for Mauren, then you will know how you aids are enjoying you wife

  35. Around the world… today, Saturday, May 3rd 2008,
222 cities have signed up for the global marijuana march.

From a US perspective, its a peaceful march to promote the decriminalisation of marijuana, as a industrial plant, as well as a medicine and a recreational herb. Many also support the idea about the cannabis plant being free, free as in free beer.

If I am not wrong, in Zambia you might add inn a few more critical needs.

Such as opening up future areas for food production.

A tax on decriminalised marijuana sold in official licensed “Daga Cafe”.
Just like The Netherlands. Give it a tax and make sure the tax is going directly into developing large scale hemp farms. Food security…
