Mazabuka Mayor, Edmund Cheelo, has called on the Office of the Vice President to immediately send relief food supplies to the district to mitigate the effects of hunger ravaging the area.
Mr. Cheelo complained to ZANIS in Mazabuka today that a 50 Kilogramme bag of maize has been increased in most villages from K 50,000 to K 100,000.
He said the high cost of maize which stems from the shortage of the commodity has now forced most families to survive on mangoes which have also become scarce due to high demand by starving villagers.
Mr. Cheelo said government should also consider sending relief food for sale in villages to enable poor families who cannot afford to meet high transport costs to town buy food locally.
However, Mazabuka District Commissioner, Tyson Hamaamba, has assured the Mayor and starving villagers in the district that government is aware of the hunger situation and is seriously considering sending relief food to the district.
Mr Hamaamba said the Office of the Vice President phoned him and assured him that a truck load of relief Maize was on the way to Mazabuka from Chipata.
He said the food aid would be distributed to the beneficiary communities immediately it arrives in Mazabuka.
Mr. Hamaamba said the dispatch of officers from the Office of the Vice President to conduct a rapid food assessment exercise is testimony enough to show government commitment in mitigating the effects of hunger in the district.

I have come to understand that we Zambians are very lazy people. Always asking for relief food. Always begging. Maybe instead of relaxing his balls at the farm, Rabid Bulldog Toadface should address issues such as this one first. Poor villagers, the owners of sugar land have resorted to eating mangoes.
We are told RB stood for continuity of economic and other policies of Levy but how come he is not making it easier for small scale farmers to increase production. The cost of fertilizer is beyond the means of most small scale farmers. I can see no end to these hunger situations and relief food with this type of thinking from our economist President.Need we shout it into his ear that even the USA and the whole of Western Europe still subsidize farmers. Are we more capitalist than they are? Strange!
Thought Maestro says they have enough food there! Ah well!

this is what happens when a drought prone country depends on a rain fed crop. from maize to mangoes, so when we have a year with no rains, the country will see severe famine. why don’t these jokers in govt change the dietary culture?
This takes me right back to my original question on another blogg a few days ago…and that is, why is Mazabuka so susceptible? Surely, is not Mazabuka subject to the same economic pressures as every other part of Zambia or am I missing something?
Am alway wonder why southern province every year they cry for relief food and yet it is the maize belt. From what i have seen most of relief food goes to Southern province. The problem is these people they are becoming lazy and they dont know how to preserve food. What they do what ever they will haverst they sell all and remain nothing waiting for free food called relief. Let them learn how to preserve food.

My mother however is probably throwing away mangoes and i do not now how she can donate more to those without food for year in year out she gives many people whom she reaches. On the maize prices, I will be back soon.
