President Rupiah Banda has urged Zambians in the Diaspora to take a leaf from Ethiopian nationals who have invested massively in their country.
Mr. Banda said the Ethiopians in Diaspora have invested in their country’s infrastructure , Agriculture , Tourism and Real Estate that has translated into significant development of Ethiopian towns such as the capital, Addis Ababa.
President Banda was speaking last night when he addressed the Zambian community in Addis Ababa where he is attending the 12th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, which is under the theme ‘Infrastructure Development in Africa’ .
The Ethiopian government estimates that between 1.5 million and 2 million Ethiopians are living abroad in places as far as Sweden, Canada and the Middle East.
Mr. Banda said efforts would be made by the Zambian government to find a strategy of encouraging and facilitating for the Zambians abroad to invest their earnings back home.
“Investing back into the country by you people in the Diaspora would help you avoid becoming destitutes once you are recalled,” he added.
Mr. Banda also called on Zambians to adjust their way of life in the face of the global economic financial crisis.
President Banda urged all Zambians to seek to be self-sustaining by venturing into farming in a bid to avoid buying food for their survival.
He said at national level, the country was diversifying from the traditional dependency on mining to other sectors such as agriculture and tourism in a bid to mitigate the impact of the global economic financial crisis.
President Banda also emphasized the need for unity at family, community and national level, as unity is a prerequisite for personal and national development.
He said unity was a precious attribute, which must be guarded jealously if Zambia is to move forward.
President Banda reiterated that his administration was a listening government and would accept constructive criticism for the good of the country.
Speaking earlier, Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Patrick Sinyinza said the efforts by President Banda to spare time from his busy schedule for the Zambian Community in Ethiopia was a clear manifestation of good leadership.
Mr. Sinyinza said the Zambian Community in Ethiopia was fully behind the leadership of President Banda and government.
And Chairman of the Zambian Community in Ethiopia Washington Mukumbila congratulated President Banda for his victory in the October 30 Presidential by-election.
Mr. Mukumbila said signs were already visible that Zambia was poised for greater development under the leadership of president Banda.

What is the incentive?
Yes you funny diasporans..where is the money?! :-w
OK. Let me read
Teti!!!!
One for life
what is important is to attract those zambians back home.most of them actually suffer
What has he invested in his village?
:o:o:o We have been to Addis Mukamba chani ABanda. Can you show us the statistics for that inverstment. :o:o
We would love to, but tulatina ama high taxes!….
What needs to happen first and foremost is for the government to lead by example, reduce on carrying excess laggage on important national assignments. We as Zambians need to be fanacially disciplined
all the time. Why should the government pay for cadres to attend AU meetings the government needs to be serious in the way they do things only then shall we be inspired to invest in our country.
:o:o Do you think it is encouraging with all your rigging. We will inverts if we choose our own government. For now forget….:o:o:o:o
1 to 3, where have you resurrected from? Awe mwe. or may be its jamaco and Ba Mose who have metamophised into these strange bloggers!!
Ma-Image builders banazebenza, chayamba kuonekako mushe ichi chimuntu :o:o:o:o
Thank you for your wise advise, but investment should start with Zambian who are already in that country. If there are any rich people in Zambia , then there are not investing in Zambia,Zambia should be the way it is now.Come to South Africa, rich people are investing within South Africa. But where are the rich people of Zambia investing.Lets develop out own country the so called rich people of Zambia.Do not take you investment to Belgium.
What wealth is in Ethiopia other than the closely guarded beautiful women?
Get out of here RB.In Ethiopia, the govt give precedence to its own people before any other. In Zambia, the govt embraces every foreign Jim and Jack sidelining its own people. What do you want us to do.I can’t believe this hypocrisy.
Wenye wanu! :-@
too much corruption in zed
# 15 good one! I had a crush on this ethiopian girl…blood beautiful! But, I guess I shouldn’t have liked her friend too…yabba.. 🙁
Emulate them in what ? Hunger
yes #16 everything that Ethiopians consume is locally produced. they even have avocado juice. why cant we have ifisongolo juice. RB empower your people before you talk of them emulating Ethiopians. kwaliba wa tandala and you want your people to be like the beautiful ethiopians who use butter as lotion.
#15
So in short ifwe tatuli basuma???
7. THE PONTIFF GENERAL
iam not a surpoter of RB but on this one i think he is a good example of it. RB spent almost his entire life in diaspora yet he maintained his well established companies in Zambia. Allen west is a very old company and still operating in kitwe, Robert hudson is also still operating in lusaka. Chiparamba trading though now being run by his son is still operating now at Manda Hill. Iam told in the late 80s he added a small farm in his home town chipata. Apart from his farm it looks like all the companies where run while in diaspora and when he came back he just continued from where he left.
I just got notice of Govt earmarking my lot for reposession. How do I invest when vultures are lurking all over with evil intentions. And also whats with the reposessions when we have only had title of the land for a decade while the terms of lease says 99 yrs?
Mr Pres Im disappointed with the ops of lands min and banks. If they gave us the same treatment they offer foreigners, you will have no cause to worry. We are given raw deals by both the lands and financial institutions. There is need to step up and empower zedians in owning modern commercial infrastructure other than shopping complexes.
Characters like Nawakwi are now being rewarded for campaigning for nyama soya, all the way to Addis on tax payer’s money.who is she representing?
I Am back!!! Watch this space!!!!!!!!!!!! :d:-j
We will never came back.. did you pay for our visa? we charge us so much for the passports…
For what for??? there are no incentives in out mother land, just the rich aare getting richer and the poor are getting poorer!!! :-b
he will be the first one to frustrate them. Rigging elections can not attract anyone back home, it only does the opposite. May be he is talking about the 1 billon chinese in the dispora. As you know shoes are flying in china and 60million factory jobs gone. Super Power honey moon is over
During the presidency of RB,b-) Kenya has been transformed into a glittering multi-storey shopping mall of corruption. how can we fit it?
During the presidency of RB,b-) Zambia has been transformed into a glittering multi-storey shopping mall of corruption. how can we fit it?
For 23 called engines. Those are not real investments. Taking money from the Government and establishing personal business is just plunder. Ask HH, the so called business man how easy is it to steal during privatisation.
Depending on the person manning a given shop, you can steal anything in this mall called Zambia and walk away scot-free. In this mall the shopper doesn’t pay for what he takes and doesn’t face any sanctions. He usually steals with the help of the shop attendant b-) RB
That is all he can say. Does he even know the current level of remittances to Zambia? Look at the statics before you accuse us of not doing what we have been faithfully doing even though there are no incentives to talk about. Why should a simple passport cost so much when a VISA for foreigners is so cheap? Find out why Ethiopians in the diaspora invest so much in their country? I am sure you would not make this statement. The Ethiopian government has done so much to attract investment from their nationals in the diaspora. It seems you respect foreigners more than your own people.
25. POLITICAL PROSTITUTE
If you cant beat them join them. Politics is about judgement whats the point of having good ideas stuck in the opposition where they cant be implemented and claim that you want to improve the lives of people. The next election will be in 2011 thats the fact, so if you have good ideas why wait for 2011 when you can contribute now. moreover if you wait for 2011 there is no guarantee that you will win, chances are that you will die with your plans. Let Nawakwi a good economist contribute in any way she can as Mcain would like to do. Govnt is not for MMD, UPND, FDD or PF its for the people of Zambia regardless of their affiliations.
Its about time!! :o:o:o:o
“Mr. Banda said efforts would be made by the Zambian government to find a strategy of encouraging and facilitating for the Zambians abroad to invest their earnings back home.
“Investing back into the country by you people in the Diaspora would help you avoid becoming destitutes once you are recalled,” he added.”
Firstly, who will recall me? Secondly, what incentives are you going to provide to me in looking at the way you have provided incentives to foreign investors?
Forget Rupiah and the useless UNIP generation that have crossed in the sub party MMD. They are a wasted generation and they are JUST CHINESE DISPORA.
Good observation NS but try to give us incetives in terms of tax exemptions in the first five years.
Mr Presido, how can you elect that dictator in Gaddafi as the new AU president? Iam very disappointed with his election for he is a threat to our democracy in our fragile Africa.
Nyama soya you people don’t give Zambians a chance to invest all you think of is foreign, if a foreign apply for a land and a Zambian apply for the same land you would rather give it to foreign than a Zambian. motivation palibe
Mr Banda!! We are not Ethiopeans Imwe!! Then you also rule Zambia like Ethopia is ruled!!
I really do not thnik our President is serious!!
All the time Chinese, Koreans, Indians and then Zambians in Diaspora? I am not sure if this guy really knows what he is talking about!! He should spend more time in his office in Zambia than runing around like a headless chicken!!
37. Anonymous continued.
There is no need for rhetoric Mr President RB Banda. Your MMD GRZ has been in power for 17 years and what have you collectively as successive governments done to promote investment from Zambians living in the diaspora?
I have heard so much of useless talk, but please you will do me good if you show your commitment to this by implementing incentives so that I can be motivated to invest in Zambia.
Otherwise, do not waste precious time in talking only as ‘time is money’ according to someone.
Well,we cannot always say what we invest in so Banda or anyone else would not know how we spend our money in Zambia infact Mwanawasa did his homework,he lured most of us in the diaspora to invest back home & some of us had been doing i even before that advice from Levy.
Ekalefye tondolo uyo. Does he know why they are investing in their own country. Let him find out. Here in Zambia pay highly in PAYE and yet we do not see any benefits. Roads are in shambles, hospitals are bad and to get standard treament you have to pay, to get good education you have to pay. So where is the incentive? You could just end up losing your money here
Off for Lunch. since I dont have enough cash, I will just go to Joe Mbuzi Snacks along Lumumba Road opposite Masiye Motel and hammer some michopo, mixed with delele and potatoes. but will do a ka wash down with shhhhh…Men Of Serious Intention
33. Lady chiza’s legs
How are you?
How about you stop allowing foreigners priority of investing in Zed?I have vowed to return to Zed in a year, I love my country too much. I realise I may struggle with finding work but it’s better than being subjected to developing a 1st country even more. Be serious, you’re 15mins of fame is almost running out
I hope, RB’s eyes are firmly on Thandiwe coz Ethiopia has beautiful women. we can have a second lady Ka. bye am off to Joe Mbuzi today. check out for my Toyota Conquest, the one smoking!!!
Ok bwana RB. We need to copy good things only. Not wars…
I believe that RB is quite thoughtful in his approach to economic matters. You can see it from the issues he talks about and how he believes such can lead to helping the nation.
It is pointless spending so much on education when a very large chunk of these guys get out of the country after so much tax payers’ money has been spent on then and yet when they go out there they dont think of investing back.
It is necessary for govenment to take stock of expenditure on education and how that translates into developing other nations than Zambia.
Ladies and gents, USA does not shoot in the air when they attarct foreigners to get American Visa; they know the benefit of using those u didnt train.
46 fine. Zambia is in the grip of recycled rot. Regardless of RB’s democratic disguise, the rot and stench of corruption gives it away. And yet the citizens will by all probability voluntarily hand power to the same stench in another two years’ time.
Yaba! i feel mumala ku bwata such talk! nayenda ku chimbuzi

#22. Baby C, dont worry my sister you are also beautiful its just that on average, Ethopians are really beautiful.
Iwe Nyana Soya first give Zambian Investors priority. You want forigners so invest back home finshi? Not ifya kula ponta ponta fye apa :-t
The zambian govt is too good a govt.It loves its neighbour more than itself and its people. It refused to bail out zambian airways because it was zambian.Had it not been zambian they would have bailed it out.Trust me.
I agree that Akhulu Mpuno should spend more time in his office not globe trotting na bene Nawakwi. Tiza mvelako 😕
While we welcome your encouragements ,it become emperative to acknowledge that Ethopians have been able to attract more foreighn direct investment (FDI)in their country than our case.Zambia remains one of the worst Investment destination in the world because of high premium risk .This has been a huge drawback in the quest for development as we are made to repay the loans from IMF,World Bank and Other International lenders more than most of the african countries. The government is tasked with the responsibility of creating investment friendly inviiroment ti attract more foreighn invvestment and reduce the premium risk. The contributions Zambians in Diaspora is not enough to lift the structural
It is a good starting point for our Govt to finally realise that Zambia will only be developed by Zambians. Home is sweet home.
The tax incentives should equally be extended to those Zambians who are willing to invest in their country. In the past Govt has only given tax incentives to foreigners who leave after they have made enough at the expense our poor people.
What is so difficult for our leaders in office to see. You do not need a PHD to know that some investors are worth nothing.
Tell thandi insead to emulate the Ethiopian chicken tandurri~:>
#15. My freind its true they are beautiful that side. But it doesnt end there. When you get into addis abba you will see significant buildings sprouting everywhere. Not the pathetic ones you see in most of Lusaka and worse the country side. It’s good for NyamaSoya tyo travel and see for himself. Poor ethiopia is doing it with a govt that works with it’s people. Not ours that favor foreigners.
look at him =))
There are a number of things that need to be done to lure external investments including that from Zambians in diaspora. Firstly, the political govt structure leaves much to be desired. This has an implication on development of the country’s key sectors and infrastructure. It will be important to point to infrastructure development before we can attract investment. Change of mindset of politicians in govt is key in this.
Why is it that every time we are told to EMULATE?
Why can’t we for once be told to ORIGINATE?
I have nothing against learning from other nations but I think every Zambian has the potential to make the country a better place if only we could be given the opportunities. After all we have the resources that other countries (like Ethiopia) don’t even have!
Those who want to invest back home, let me do so, to those who don’t want, let them be. It’s a personal decision. You can’t force them to do what they don’t want. Besides this government respects foreigners than the indigenous Zambians.
Elyo mwalasumina,
Sata’s cut taxes and mo money for your pocket is the only way to spare money for investment in our highly ravaged corrupt and costly Zed.
I know we are all made in God’s image, but please that image. You’ld think its a monument. Off to lunch

Ethopian chicks are really beautiful ,the Bible also mentioned that the most beautiful women came from Ethopia.I kow Zambian chicks are beautiful but Ethopians its Title race
I can only agree with #54 Engine Bbuloko. Ethiopian women are incredibly beautiful. One Ethiopian girl with the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen smiled at me once at a club here and I felt something I’ve never felt before! My blood pressure shot up so high, I thought my blood vessels would burst! I had to dash out for fresh air.

Engines,, whilst you heaped Praise on nawakwi, she is no good role model to represent us, she abandoned her party to campaign for NyamaSoya, she has been in the news grabing Hambobe someones husband, satired kids with him, rememeber he once broke her ribs due to punneling. So Edith was bad choice to get a lift on the challenger to Addis Ababa. Maybe addis abbaba streeet in Lusaka, just maybe.
#67. Baby C, na na na my dear, I love Zambian women coz they are not only beautiful but smart as well. Be what you are….we love you as you are.

RB,
1. Level the playing ground for investment for foreigners and locals. We are ready for motherland – Zambeziland
2. When you visit countries where we are working. Take time to talk to us. We can easily build zambeziland together. Not like abena FTJ who wanted us sent back home to come and sit under Mango trees.
3. Train your Ambassadors to update Zambezilanders on what is happening at home. Some of these embassies have no registers…check.
Home is home, that is why I am here to put food on my parent’s table and have a roof on their heads.
I AM RETIRING KWA NDU. SWEET ZAMBEZILAND.
#81 Hate Speech you are funny
Sweet Zambeziland indeed..Africa is the future, even the Muzungus know!!!:)>-
I have a different thought. Zambians do have a local role to play in the whole thing. However, we need to attract a different kind of investor on a dual citizenship status. I believe if we could attract more foreigners, we would not need to be part of the US of Africa so urgently. Attract more foreigners and give them dual nationality, and real rights. Immigrants, I mean. I have nothing against Ethiopian women coming over, though stricter rules should apply to protect the Zambian woman from unfair competition.
Hmm Nine chale, we can also make your blood pressure go up..lol…just a lil jealous..like Baby C.
I think what RB is saying for once makes sense. But people need a platform that will make them feel like they are important. He might as well treat zambians abroad the way foreigners are treated when they invest, they are so respected and the Gov doesnt hit them hard with TAX..Then people can start talking.
Jamaco
hello abena ‘diaspora’.although the word sounds like a chi desease
You see people,in life if you have nothing to say its better just to keep quiet. What can someone emulate from Ethiopia surely? Does RB know what he is talking about? Imwe ba RB just encourage people to invest back home in Zambia, not giving Ethiopia as an example please. What comes to a person,s mind whenever you mention Ethiopia is war, hunger, malnutrition and people eating sand.So will be scaring people, but uyu mudala kwena bwafya.

In Zambia we need to demolish some of the buldings in kamwala and put up better ones. Problem in Zambia is that there are no standards…as a structural engineer, it makes me sick to see the kind of structures that are allowed in Zambia.
I was very impressed though when I saw the new proffesionsl insuarance building near kabwe round about in Lusaka, thats the quality we need.
Mr President, Why don’t you liase with bank of Zambia governor to know how much Zambians in the diaspora are sending back to their country? Professor Chirwa told everybody that Zambians in the diaspora send US$270 million every year back to their country.
What do they get back? Nothing except for a President who is flying about all the time with no hope of ever improving the country. Mr President, stop insulting us in the diaspora. Late Mwanawasa also called us failures who have done nothing for our country. Yet Presidents of Ethopia and West Africa, Ghana in particula, acknowledge the contributions their natinals in the diaspora make to their economies. :((:((:((:((:((
Introduce dual citizenship and investments from Zedians in diaspora will sart pouring into mother Zed.
76. Mpangula Mputyu
Outside her personal issues which i usually dont like to mix with policy implementation, Nawakwi is a very prgmatic woman whatever she touches will usually produce tangible results. Just like or courageous people sometimes she makes personal mistakes to do with her marriege but i wont judge her for that. Nawakwi started the HIPC initiative that LPM inherited, she was instrumental in the formation of PRSP although mostly done by Dr Musokotwane. If you live in Lusaka the tomatoes you had to your lunch most likely came from her farm that she started before joining politics. These are things i will judge her for.
Akabwali guys ni power.Ichi mwela pa kabwali guys please.People in other countries who dont know what akabwali is listen. This is the staple food in Zambia. And to prepare it,you simple put water in the pot,the amount of water depends on how small or big you want akabwali or nshima to be.Put the pot on a stove and let the water start getting warm. Before it boils start adding some mealie meal until it makes some porriadge. Here you dont add to much of meali meal the porriadge should just be in the middle not very light and not very thick.Leave the porriadge to continue boiling for 20 to 25 minutes. Then start adding the breakfast meali and stearing using the cooking stick called umwinko.Until the porriadge gets reasonably hard. Then you can eat this nshima with any relish you want.Fish, chicken, beef etc.You eat nshima using your hands make a lamp by ukubumbaila. Its a good staff and economical.Once you eat it takes time for you to feel hungry.

Those figures are not true its only prof Chirwa himself who donated 2 million pounds to MMD the other contributions are very small amounts and infact we are sending a lot of money outside on burseries and also on tuition fees for most bloggers on this site and elswhere. If you compute the net flow of these resoources $270m will be to big a figure.
havent seen my rashid. where @ thou lover man?
SO,HOW MANY ZAMBIANS ARE IN DIASPORA **==**==
Mr. Banda, why should you tell ordinary zambians to emulate ethopians? Why dont you also play your part & emulate the good things that other govts are doing world wide? Things like cost saving measures in all govt activities, infrastructure improvement via construction of health, educational (primary, secondary & higher) facilities, road networks etc, but most important doing less talking & acting. All you have shown is poor leadership by increasing your salaries & endulging in excesses at the expense of the zambian tax payer. Therefore, please show good leadership by leading by example, emulate all the good things that you have come across your travels around the world, not the bad ones.
after you sidelined zambians..you gave businesses to foreigners with tax relief. You never taxed them but you taxed Zambians highly. Zambians complained but to no avail. Now your investors have started running away ..its when you call upon Zambians to invest? Be serious guys?? all the businesses are taken away by foreigners and to make head way into them its a big problem. First pave way for us. No tax as you did to the foreigners.
:-@:-@:-@:-@
invest where you will have good returns, some of you making so much noise don’t even own a tricyle.
Tired of talking!
will watch!
And would rather work as I can see the difference
Commenting on these issues? No No No… Nothing will be done but
myself… tired and tired, waiting for another story on the economy
For heavens sake, who recall those in diaspora? He was actually addressing Zambian commmunity which comprises diplomats. What can sane Zambian be doing in Ethiopia. What happens when a Zambian Pridedent goes to a certain country students and Zambian civil servants acredited to that country are rounded up and addressed and encouraged to return home and invest. There is nothing tangiable that GRZ has put in place. If Zambians living in diaspora say brought home US$50m for investment are they going to be accorded the same incetives like foreigners or its just mere yap yap yap.Let the old man take his Arabic coffee instead of talking this at that for you guys in disapora make your decsions HERBB
IMPORTANCE OF FORMAL EDUCATION!
WASHINGTON — First lady Michelle Obama has thanked Education Department employees for their service and told them she is a product of their work.
Mrs. Obama dropped by the department Monday. It was the first in a series of visits she is paying federal workers.
She also praised new Education Secretary Arne Duncan, a longtime friend of the Obamas.
Mrs. Obama attended Chicago’s public schools. She said they nurtured her and helped her get to where she is today.

#112 am right behind you, what Zambian community in Ethiopia did he meet apart from the people he sent there, address people up there in the UK,US or down here for example where actual communities exist to get a true picture, investment in Zambia can be in the form of better “brains” running some of those ministries/Boz etc also, make the playing field level and am sure a few bloogers will run back.

Thanks, love my name too.
well since God only sends Engineers my way, maybe am your ex????? in another life…lol
So you also recogn Ethopians are hotter than Zambians, dont make me send you my picture….mwandi…they are cute..
cheers
Govt must provide free land, no tax for a year and protect zambians not foreigners. All commercial plots have given to foreigners who just use us as labourers.
RB is confused does he even know how Ethiopians are living back in their country. The ethiopians I know paint a very scary picture of what Ethiopia is , of course they are wealthy ethiopians but the majority live in serious poverty. The community In diaspora that i think is doing very well are asians and west africans.
Engine BBuloko…
Yes people builde anyhow in Zambian, do you think they even seek any engineering advice before they build the tuma shops?? Nope..
But dont you think this is a starting point from RB, atleast hes not Ignorant that thousands of Potential Entities are out there…
But he needs to talk about it seriously, na mano, not making referals like Ethopia…
1. We are not able to vote.
So how can we invest when we have no way of making the government accountable for our money?
In the meantime, we will continue remmitting to our relatives as need arises.
2. Ethiopians went abroad as refugees and asylum seekers. During the civil war, some of them got away with a lot of cash. They can afford to do what they are doing. Most Zambians left with nothing to start from the scratch.
oops my above comment is soo unedited and pressed submit..sorry guys
Yes. Give us dual citizenship and money will flow into Zed.
Iwe bwezani are you out of your mind. First of all you try very hard @ stopping zambians to go abroad, They work hard and finally go abroad …. pa last at investment investment eya shani iyo ….oh in addition to that them foreign exploiters “Investers” are let off tax free why dont you do the same to zambians who are abroad
I have used Ethopian airline andive been in adis, the road is full prostitute at night and not everyone is pretty as for me i prefer zambians more especially those home. **==**==
Let GRZ should give incentives such as allowing those who have approved building plans leave to bring in building material tax free. That is happening in Zimbabwe already.
Mr President, these r good words, but back them up with action. It is not easy to bring any equipment to start investment in Zed. Just for example, us Zambians based in South Africa & Botswana had joined in the car importation business. This business was a good way for ordinary Zambians to raise capital. But today, we are all out because of 100% duty of used Japanese cars. Some 10 yrs old. If one pays 100% duty, how much are they going to sell car for. Lets not be misled, we in foreign countries are not highly paid. Our salaries, like the locals, are designed to assist us borrow mortgages & cars & household things. Very few can use their salaries to invest big. Like anyone else, we need to s
is that your president ba zambia? 8-x8-x
Zambia has no provision to assist any Zambian. Foreigners (Whites) are offered tax breaks. Our Zimbabwe friends, then, used to invest highly back home because their Government did not tax everything. In Zambia drive-in with a few bags of cement – duty!! Second hand house furniture, which you have been using here in SA – duty. Building materials like window & door frames, roofing sheets – duty!! All this am just talking in the back of your van or you add a small trailer, its arguments with customs officials. How do you invest in such a country, where to take anything home, you pay.

Has anyone in South Africa used the service on 084 190 0030 and then insert your Zambia number 002601xxxxxx# number and get routed for free to Zambia landline numbers? Is the service still available? I am coming to SA next week and would like to enjoy the same free privileges.
Tulolela ngawafumapo nyamasoya naiwe, otherwise many people think positively about zambia so kuntanshi fikawama :d
IN MY VIEW, THIS PPP IS A WAY OF WANTING TO LET THAT PARTCIULAR INDIAN TO KEEP THE STATE LAND. BUT THEY WILL NOT SUCCEED.
ANYWAY, LONG STORY. THE GIST OF THE LONG STORY IS THAT THEY SHOULD USE PROPER LANGUAGE WHEN THEY ENCORUAGE ZAMBIANS TO GO BACK HOME AND INVEST. WHEN WE GO BACK WE FACE INSURMOUNTABLE DIFFICULTIES INTRODUCED BY THE SAME PEOPLE WHO SAY GO BACK HOME AND INVEST.
RB’s Architect son (his junior) has been in Botswana for years now. He can tell his father how much we all want to invest back home. He should tell him that to whatever we bring to ZED we are made to pay duty, 100%. Things are expensive in Zambia. For a Zambian based in the Southern region, we know how much these things MUST COST. So we opt to bring things, like building materials, from here. We are even told that importation of certain things has been banned. They even threaten to repose, unless you can dig into your pocket. After that then you pay duty. Zambia is now a very expensive destination to drive to: Petrol is three times the price in SA & Botswana. You pay funny things called “ca

Zambia is now a very expensive destination to drive to: Petrol is three times the price in SA & Botswana. You pay funny things called “carbon tax” if you come in with a foreign registered car, even as a Zambian. You are charged “Insurance” which no one explains who it covers – whether you or we do not know. Then duty on what you are carrying. So how can an ordinary Zambian afford to invest?

The Zambian set up seems aimed at punishing those Zambians staying outside. Everything is heavily taxed when brought from outside even when the intended mission is added value to the nation.
An office block being built by a foreign based Zambian creates employment opportunities. But, such a project is heavily hindered by the set up. So what do you do?
RB, shut that mouth. You guys have no clue what it means to invest back home. Give incentives and make procedure easy, then you will see people investing.
A question for the diaspora , how many zambians do you know from the diaspora that have gone back and done well back in Zambia:-?:-w it seems the norm seems to be a zambian has money in the diaspora then moves back then all that money disappears and then the same person is seen at an embassy trying to get a visa to go back to diaspora while being laughed at by other zambians.
Nawakwi was there as well and the MMD party cadre in Ethiopia and will get allowances from the zed tax payers :((
#142..I hear you!

Now you are talking! i can even afford a smile! :-j
124. Rfest,
” oh in addition to that them foreign exploiters “Investers” are let off tax free why dont you do the same to zambians who are abroad ”
Or at home. 🙂 🙂
Why not have a 10 year tax holiday for all Zambian startups, and ‘zero rate’ all capital goods that are imported by Zambian owned startup businesses.
Those chaps at the border even make sure you feel the pain of being taxed and deliberately delayed at the border.
I am building an office block in Kitwe and you cant believe the hassles I have to deal with to just get a few materials through.
Talk for the sake of talk is no good.
RB, keep quiet if you have nothing as usual to talk about. When you took your undeserve holiday to Mfuwe, didn’t you complain to Namugala about the behaviour of those so called whites operating from there? They do not want Zambian to invest in Mfuwe because there are so many operators now. What have you done to encourage Zambians to establish their bases in Mfuwe?
RB, why do you treat foreign investors with kid gloves?
It is so difficult, let alone expensive for Zambians to invest in Zambia because of corruption that MMD has promoted.
hey, dams are bursting in Zed, interesting reading. :o:-w:-w:o
HH, you have a point.
MMD should hold their meeting from a hotel and not State House.
MMD, listen, if you dare and hold a meeting at State House, I will sue you.
HH, can you please file an injunction to restrain MMD from holding their meeting at State House.
The easiest thing that GRZ can do is to make it easier for Zambians living abroad to have easy access to their home country.
How easy is it to set up business in Zambia for one residing outside? Ask anyone, it is like hell. The process is so disheartening to say the least.

” But today, we are all out because of 100% duty of used Japanese cars. Some 10 yrs old. ”
Don’t you think that the government’s attitude to Zambian business is not only not friendly, but outright hostile?
Why don’t peasant farmers have security of tenure? Why all the bending over backward for foreign investers, but not for Zambian workers and entrepreneurs?
The government could do so much to stimulate commerce and economic activity, and most of it would not be about attracting capital, but about rewriting the law to suit Zambian entrepreneurs.
Why don’t they sit down with marketeers and subsistence farmers, and ask them?
# 153. Baby C, you are naughty yah! I also hear there is too much snow that side you pals ant working right?
——
There is something I find strange about Zambians, we do value our own. Its easier for a non zambian to invest in Zambia than for a zambian to do the same. Even simple things as market stands and shops are given to foreigners.
aaaah this our Zambia, we just need a generation change, the current leaders still have colonial mentality hang over where it was style to have something from “over seas”
Politicians will always be politicians..especially when they meet people like Mr Mukumbila who will convice himself for the sake of being recognised. The only time i would ever think of investing in Zambia is when politicians stopped running the country like their kitchen, look at Teta and the interventions in everything, look at the PS appointments, why waste my hard earned money here in Europe. I help my family thats good enough for me. So to hell with Nyama soya.
We do realise some of the simple problems GRZ faces when it comes to customs and revenue. For instance how to stimulate local manufacturing but at the same time protect local goods against imported goods.
The problem is that no one sits down to deal with such problems as in the now but rely on previous measures which are definitely outdated and out of line with current scenario.
Ye right! we invest so that you can be more comfortable and send more of your politicians to South Africa for treatment on our hard earned money. You must be kidding. Look at you looking so arrongant, power in zed goes to the head faster than any nation. Toadface!!!!! Invest my foot!!!! Why not try and encourage those that are already at home, say like farmers by giving them loans and also try reducing visiting too many countries. U have been in office for a few months and have already done more travels than Levy did in 1 year. Wat is wrong with you?

It’s true about the zambian government and business world being hostile to diasporee’s. It saddens me when I read AFRICA BUSINESS magazine to how certain countries governments facilitate so much for their diaspora even going as far as setting up banks for them . Yet in zambia diasporeans are just seen as a reusable source of income because the average zambian on the street has no money to give the government.
158 UNIP OYEE
Oh yes. I remember reading about this. Why hasnt LT given us this. HH you are very right on this one, but please do something about it
It is important for Zambians out there to realise that the best and best place to invest is home. The hurdles yes are there but the will to own must also be there. Big ups to RB for even considering absconders!
I believe it is not easy to stay in Europe with all that cold eish.
For SHOPRITE,it is 5 years tax free. For me a zambian immediately I open a small shop,ZRA will be there waiting for the tax.How will I invest home?

#180 theres big houses with big yards in europe for your own information . So stop occupying yourself with deluded views of others. Life in the diaspora maybe tough but it is nowhere near as tough as it is in Zambia.
what is he talking about ? investing so that he can travelling every time with Nawakwi

164. Dingane,
” We do realise some of the simple problems GRZ faces when it comes to customs and revenue. For instance how to stimulate local manufacturing but at the same time protect local goods against imported goods. ”
If they limited tariffs (like 100% import duty on Japanese cars) to goods actually manufactured in Zambia, people would choose to spend their money on goods actually produced inside the country, stimulate wages and keep money recirculating inside the country.
I think the car duty was intended to reduce the number of second hand cars, not to actually stimulate sales of Zambian made cars.
Shalapungu Banton
What do you mean by big yards?
Uyu Lady Chiza,s tukapafu utubi. I really doubt is she is a lady, because her language and everything is more of a man than a lady.If she is a lady ninshi awe sure.

Yep, Zambians need to really invest back home. But the government need to facilitate this by introducing dual citizenship. Investment will flow in!
How can one invest in Zambia, when just applying for a house or business plot is a complete nightmare. All the plots have already be allocated to people who can not build anything on them. These are the ones who later sell them at exorbitant prices to potential developers. Before Zambians abroad can invest in Zambia, the cities, ministry of lands should first put their houses in order to attract investment.
We must also be assured that the government is doing everything possible to fight against corruption, crime and injustice. We can be as quiet and as peaceful, like botswana. I am aware that Zed is peaceful but, we can do better than that.
Shalapungu Banton
That is great, six staying in yards bigger than 10 acres! I was wrong my man, I am coming to UK as soon as I can locate a 10 acre plot there, can you help me with some idea were to start from?
Firstly if african governments can give the same platform they give to white investors to there own then yes yes bakateka we shall invest but when a zambian comes from abroad and wants to invest you give them petty jealous you dont give them tax rebate like FJT gave shoprite for his personal wealth if u treat them the same way you treat white investors they will invest lets sort those issues rather than just talking
The truth of the matter is that RB is indeed one of the Best Zambian men Zambia has ever had. Most of you tuma Chaps are just busy out their without due consideration of investing in our mother country. Shame on you.
As for me, I have at least managed to build a Motel in Livingstone which is a plus at least for me. I wish I could do more.
RB should not just say that – How many Ethiopians are in Zambia and given good lands to settle. Can you do that in Ethiopia? There are Zambians working there no matter how long they are there cannot be given land or business place to operate from. Go to markets and shops they are all indiginous Ethiopians running the economy. In Zambia you have made it very difficult. Clean up your house (Auditors General Report) is there. Dont just TALK because you have to. Make a research. Ethiopia’s economy is run by Ethiopians………..
I am looking for Zambian partners from the following background(s): IT Software or Hardware Engineering; Learning & Development; Business; Marketing etc, interested in running (ICT) Training Centres Email: [email protected] ([email protected])
who mentioned 10 acres?
Shalapungu Banton
I almost forgot, how much could a 10 acre plot ‘virgin land’ be?
Shalapungu Banton
Preferably in central london.
I don’t know where you got the 10 acre figure but I suggest you ask someone that owns a farm in the Uk because an average yard even in zambia doesn’t stretch to 10 acres.
What is this? Censurehip at LT?
Shalapungu Banton
Lilayi plots are an average 10 acres in Lusaka, here in Kazungula, I am afraid of being seen as ‘boastful’ so I wont tell you the average areas.
But what size do you have in mind?
You don’t need to tell me the average I already have properties in Zambia to know what the average is. Lilayi is not central so your idea of a central allocation of land 10 acres big is even ridiculous in Lusaka central.
202. Kaliko,
” Ethiopia’s economy is run by Ethiopians……….. ”
And that is the difference. If you look at Warren Buffett, or Blackonomics, the story is exactly the same. Wealth comes from reinvestment of profits and costs within the same neighborhood or country. Not free trade, not free markets. Zambia’s wealth is sent overseas and is not reinvested in agriculture or infrastructure. As long as foreign companies can come to Zambia and export raw materials untaxed, Zambian is going to be poor.
Local business people hire locals to work for them, reinvest profits when they expand a successful business, and pay local and national taxes.
Just get back to work, what do you know apart from sleeping and :-@ you should be ashamed
No, no I am not asking about Lusaka but london.
Can you tell me 10 acres is too big to find in Central london?
Now how big are those yards you were refering too? At least we are going somewhere 10 acres is too big.
When did i become a farming land expert in London? is it when I told you zambians have big yards? Common sense should tell you that a 10 acre plot(that can fit mandahill twice) in any central city is ridiculous.
Sounds great Mr president but one thing is for sure and it is clear from most comments that are being put up here, that Zambia has to put its house in order, for people to feel inspired about investing. The government has to spearhead the whole investment agenda.Use the media such as LT to listen to what people’s worries are about putting their money into Zambia.I have a list of them..
BTW Lilayi is within 5km of the CBD Lusaka, anything within 20km of central london will do.
Shalapungu Banton
O.K let us cut the story short, how easy is it to buy a 15 by 25 metre plot in Central london? how much is it cash?
15 x 25 metre is too tight perhaps Mr. Baton?
It is good to invest in the Country, but there is already money in the Country with our natural resources, we are always advertising HIV?AIDS, Orphans all the time, not the good part of Zambia. Zambia has interlectual citizens and they need to be empowered to enrich their own land. 2 much corruption and paying good salaries to politicians rather than the poor in the villages who vote for them. I am tired of this mess. We need new direction not the same odds!
Shalapungu Banton
O.K my last offer 1 akaz (pardon my Zambian English)
Well stated RB – reading all the 220 excuses above makes my heart bleed…Zambians will always suffer an inferiority complex and prefer to live in someone else’s house or someone else’s life. The grass is not always greener. Fix your own house first. WELL STATED RB – I THINK YOU HIT A NERVE
Again I question since when did I become a real estate agent ? if my knowledge of big zambian owned yards abroad give me that qualification?
Shalapungu Banton
You have proved your point, I am mauless. Can you imagine, someone misled me believing that Zambians can hardly have a backard gardens in UK.
You have cleared my gross deluded understanding of actual happenings, forgive me for my ignorance.
bye bye :d
Zambia is rated one of the most corrupt countries to do business in. One of the highest tax rates on importation (equipment, materials, goods). There is absolutely no way investors are going to line up to invest in a nation that doesn’t open itself for fair trade.
It is less expensive and , more profitable, to invest in other African countries. Every country in the world hosts companies that are multi-national and their existence is based on their success and investment in Zambia.
If Zambia would quit trying to take advantage of every person who wants to invest- it might just work. Invest in common sense education, financial literacy, personal development and learn to work together.
” If Zambia would quit trying to take advantage of every person who wants to invest- it might just work. ”
They’ve tried that for the last 17 years. It is called ‘neoliberalism’ (privatisation, ‘free trade’, deregulation), and they did it in favour of foreign investors only.
The problem isn’t ‘fair trade’, the problem is that Zambian entrepreneurs are not at the center of economic policy. There is a strong hostility by the government toward local producers and farmers.
That is the problem, not the lack of ‘free trade’.
Anonymous surely anyone with common sense can tell you that just because you know one person that doesn’t have a backyard then it applies to the whole zambian diasporean demographic. Your opinion is like someone seeing a housein kaunda square and then saying all zambians like that, it’s laughable to say the least. Theres zambians with big back yards and theres zambians with no back yards, why you choose to only see the ones with no back yards begs to question itself in your issues.

pls u pipo near her, tell her. but jealousy down RB now looks handsome nowadays mwe :*
BA KATEKA ABA IS A LIER. IF WHAT HE SAID IS TRUE THEN WHY ARE ETHIOPIANS STARVING TO DEATH? SHOULD WE EMULATE POVERTY?
A Zambian goes back to his village after living years in Engie training as a shoe designer and see all the villagers. Saddened with this he says there is “no market here for me (must be poor Government policy) am going back to Engie.”
A Ghanaian (and just about any other African) with the same training goes back to village and notices the same sad state of affairs but he say: “fantastic 100% market share”.
Get a grip Zedians!!!
#143,
Dont worry
We can not emulate the Ethiopians..

But zoona eee, chi Ndalama Banda cabufi. Ehtiopians doing well? where? Wherever Ethiopians are, are mere refuges, asylum seekers. In the UK, they do not get good jobs and are always living on benefits from the British Govt. Ci Banda is a lier. Look at it.
Zambia abroad are sending money to keep the Banks going. Zambia could be in the same position as Ethiopia but our leaders choose to be corrupt. Zambians are hard working people, but they have now been reduced to thieves, vultures who steal from their families, and crooks who swindle good citizens.
Mr Banda, we are not coming back, we are building homes here. We are going to retire abroad and die abroad, our families are here, remember you took our passports away from us. Well, we got new ones, just like did, swapped your Malawian passport for a Zambian one
TALK TALK TALK, all dry promises
Do what Obama is doing for his own people, emulate him Sir, cope his ways.
Look after the street kids and orphans Mr Banda and cut down on your trips abroad. Go home and work
You forgot demographics so easily. A lot of people still live in Ethiopia, despite the war,and they keep reproducing like no one’s business where as there is only 12 million in Zambia, of which 85% of these are youths with have no jobs no education, and chance in life.
Uuuuummmmmmm ba Banda, once we are “recalled” by WHO? We are not here on political appointments which get terminated because the incumbent is challenged.
why did the Zambian in Ethiopia even bother to go and meet him!? They should have just ignored him. If you give him an audience, what do you expect? :-t
Has a study been done to show that Zambians are not investing back home as much as their Ethiopian counterparts? Most Zambians I know, myself included, are building houses back home and supporting their relatives in various ways, including education. I am not sure about other parts of Ethiopia, but the Addis I saw was not as glamorous as RB is making it seem. Zed is years ahead. And, which ‘you people’ is he talking about? Certainly not me! What more should we do – send our entire paycheques to Zed?
While people in the so called disapora are too busy being critical for the sake of being seen to have an abiity to formulate a critical sentence on a forum, serious minded investors from other countries are buying land in the country. As the land supply reduces and demand pushes the price upwards, the same critics will begin blaming the government for allowing ‘foreigners’ to buy the land ahead of Zambians.
Stop dreaming people, if you cannot or will not invest, stop throwing mud at those who will, or those who encourage such investments. Zambia is not the first country to offer foreign firms tax incentives for capital investments.
245 Bupe
I think serious minded people like you are not the target, more those who think access to McDonalds somehow elevates them above people who choose to stay in Z, or those who through no fault of their own have not had the opportunities that would enable them to experience life in other economies.
Jaro well spoken,a lot of these silly comments come from people that don’t visit zambia at all, they’re busy saying localzambians do not invest,go home and see the kind of propertties zambians are putting up especially in lusaka,a lot of young people are doing so well while you’re here talking nonsense.
Nakabila you mean you’ve had land for a decade and haven’t put up even akamusakuta and you want to blame government if they reposses the land, there’re rules to be followed muntu wabo. The likes of you will have that land for 99years and will never develop it.Let serious people be given that land please.
Zambian politicts is a turn-off! Just to think of how RB has descended to power and his appointments is a disinsentive in itself. You want us to bring our hard earned money to be heavily taxed for your lavish government life style! Politicians including you, RB must change.
:((:”>:d
Give them Dual Citizenship.I think Ethiopia has that.
Obviously the people in Zambia are building because thats their backyard . We in the diaspora have the resources to build houses but the fact that there is no mechanism hence why most are put off by it.If we have the outlet to safely build and buy we would be building a house a year but because there are many thieving people. Most of us have sent money to build houses only to find the people we send the money have themselves built mansions with our money. Cases like Nakabila are genuine and happen often . I for example know of friends who have had their houses repossed , land repossed contrary to deed clauses and even people sending money to build and only to find ficticious properties.
guys, this is what i was saying during the elections. voting for RB was like bring all the manners, mentalities, recycled, old political prostitutes etc…..back into power,

I trust the spooks responsible for conveying the thoughts of Zambians on this matter will do their WORK DILIGENTLY.
Yes do not compare Zambians to Ethiopians, their reasons were caused by people like you(politicians)no one wants to leave their homes, until you make conducive environs were people are free to trade and think and talk freely maybe a trickle will come back…but until then you are just blowing hot air out of back-side!!!!!!!!!!!!!
