Put Zambians above own interest, Levy urges MMD members

Share

Republican President Dr. Levy Mwanawasa has urged Movement for Multy Party Democracy (MMD) Party Members to put the Zambian people first above their own interest.

Dr. Mwanawasa said the MMD as a party in power holds the key to a better life for Zambians hence the need to find solutions to the problems that many Zambians are facing.

He said the party has no time to relax and watch people wallow in poverty, disease, despair and hopelessness.

The President was speaking at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka last night during the MMD end of year fundraising dinner dance which was organised to raise funds for the operations of the party.

“The MMD must be affected and feel hurt when the people are suffering and injustice is inflicted on any person,” he said.

He pointed out that the party must work hard to raise its own resources for it has no right to abuse public resources.

Dr. Mwanawasa said the party must lead by example and ensure that public resources benefit the people and are prudently used for the right purposes.

More than K300 million was raised during the function, with Dr. Mwanawasa’s neck tie being brought at K5.5 million.

Zong Mining Industries pledged K111 million, while the Mathani group of companies made an undertaking of K101 million.

APG milling and National Milling Company pledged K40 million and K10 million respectively.

Senior government officials and other friends of the party also made several pledges.

And Dr. Mwanawasa who thanked the guests at the occasion the good gesture, however called for respect, moral integrity and unity in the MMD if the party had to win back respect for politics and political institution in society.

He said the MMD as a party in power must strive to ensure that it creates political resonance as opposed to political tensions.

He said the party must not allow itself to be derailed by political opportunists whose job is to insult even when it is not necessary.

Dr. Mwanawasa added that the party should not allow itself to be divided on issues that members can easily address.

“If there should be any difference among ourselves, it must be over issues that add value to the party and above all our country Zambia,” he said.

And speaking earlier, MMD Treasurer Mr. Suresh Desai said the nation has made tremendous progress in many areas of the economy due to the good policies of the new deal government.

Mr. Desai said the good polices have translated into investment flows in the country and the overall economic growth.

He however stated that the party has successfully implemented the policies because of the support of the general membership.

He however said that the party would only be able to work effectively if it has a strong financial base.

Meanwhile, President Levy Mwanawasa has implored Political Leaders in Zambia to do away with hatred and foul language as the country celebrates the festive season.

Dr. Mwanawasa said the country needs to rekindle back the spirit of Zambia of love and compassion.

“This is a Christmas season, we need a good feeling Zambia, let us remove hatred, foul language and reach out to each other,” he said.

  1. Nice new look to the site. Back to the story, there goes proof of corruption in broad daylight. Govt moved insurance of all it’s parastatals to the Insurance company belonging to Mathani Group of companies. And there is the kick back of K101 million in addition to what exchanged hands behind the scenes. Who are these MMD thugs fooling. 2011 is not that far. Why aren’t companies like KCM, Zambia Sugar, CEC, Shoprite, GAME , CELTEL, MOPANI, which make more cash than the above companies, donating?

  2. We are waiting for 2011 and that is the time when MMD will know very well.Destroying zsic and other banks is like killing your own family. This govt has no heart for local companies at all. Pay time is near and Katumbi saga will come to light. Plunders of this so called new dealers govt will see red than Chiluba. Any person who is going to take up the highest position of this land as to know that when leaving office corruption charges will follow him/her. Zed behold your hearts for the truth.

  3. What a surprise for the festive season, LT looks good. Please let us not start the insults again. Why are we zedians so jealousy? If Mathan wants to donate to MMD so what? # 1 you better ask those companies why they have not donated to MMD, be positive then you wont suffer in your heart and eventually die of heart failure.

  4. Its good that a party funds itself but what about the plunderers? Are courts in Zambia only for the poor? In other countries when the law says no one i above its true no can elevate himself above the law.

  5. Lets hope Levy will continue delivering such speeches. However, political parties should avoid corporate donations. Companies feels to own “shares” in the party. Thats why Sata lost, because of the Taiwanese interest. Why not fundraise through sports, music and other people’s oriented activities? Well, am not MMD member and I don’t want to critise these rich people. Once more, Levy’s speech was good!!

  6. Lusaka Times well done on the new look of your site.In the great name of the Almighty I would like to greet all my collegues on this blog namely BaJoze,Easy,Citizen,Kayata,CK,MDaka,Pragfimofimo,Veteran,Mala Msana wanzili,Titus, too numerous to mention. With such wonderful effort please provide sanity on this blog by blacklisting impersonators and allow professional information flow between bloggers.Let us start 2008 with a real sense of intelligencia and dynamism.

  7. And Ba EASY… this personal, you better use your own name than translating my real name. Before I joined this group, there was nobody called EASY.. Mwitukana bwana, because I don’t!!

  8. Well which company cant donate such amounts if they want some favours. We have seen hospitals with no medication, demoralised staff with long working hours under difficult conditions of work.We have never seen an politician going out to raise such amounts for the noble cause.I’m not saying we should do like the western but have heart for those in needy of help especially this season when we are waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus.May the love breed caring and happiness among humanity.

  9. Mr President your speech is well thought and written but what about your hefty allowances you have given for those taking part in NCC.IF the NCC is to come out with your pipo’s expectations and to meet their asperations then think twice about extending the message that let them sacrifice for this noble cause of our future of the tomorrows. The K500,000×500 Can buy enough Panado and malaria drugs for thousands of pipo.Your HE extend the same fund raising to instututions that matter most, Hospitals

  10. Contd:The cancer centre at UTH needs more attention and funds one life saved is good for humanity and God will reward for being there to make a difference. Please all of you taking part in NCC kindly save the pipo and not your pockets. It the same pipo who have made you to be there.Channel this hefty allowances to good use eg Hospitals and education.’A verbal conotation is directed at an individual but intellectual is super abundant.’

  11. Joseblina indetemba so Chelsea Vs Arsenal.Ala tulimucibe kwena, nindeka nokubelenga Uwauma na fyala.Kwena abaice ba gunners nabakalipa.Ba Man U lyacibali luck lilya.BaJoze enjoy your match.Bushe uyu umwaice SAGE na Chapi epo baba mwa?Nomba Katumbigate scandal has died a natural death, why cant FTJgate scandal die in a similar way? Kashiwagate scandal has been ignored,Fishogate and the Vulture fund, has been ignored, has corruption been redefined or paraphrased to suit situations? Ubuntungwa mu jambo

  12. To put the interests of Zambians should start with Government. Who approved the daily NCC allowances. Does anyone know that these daily allowances are beyond a monthly minimum wage of the country ?

And since Mulongotima indicated that the reasons for such allownces were to prevent participants from being destitutes with accomodation. What would happen if government departments increased pediems just to avoid being destitutes when working out of Station ? This contradicts the good speech!!!

  13. Welcome back Mudaala Kuku we missed you. I told you have started shatorring but Lusaka and Dubai. Its seems this blog is surviving. I just hope sanity will be the oder of the day. I have maintained. I hope to bring constructive issue on this blog. Advice the Ba Joze to mature he can have leadership qualities. What have you got to say about NCC and allowances, Sata, His MPs, Katumbi, the bagging dog for the GRZ, Magande with his loyal taxes for the mines? Mudaala the list long.

  14. Badala PLM says he rules collectives so you should not look at him but to Magande because he is incharge of the finances. He has already said he budgeted for the monies. However last time he was complaining of spending trillions. We are following this closely and careful.

  15. Easy mwaice wandi bushe walipwisha MSc? Have seen that Kenyan man Mr Gitau who has gotten his Msc in International Development Project management(Msc.IDPM),he is a plus to the continent, from the slums to Masters degree, this is encouraging we need such characters in shaping our society which have been walloped by poverty, drugs, crime etc when NCC members are busy pocketing K299bn in allowances, and if it was budgeted for it means LPM and his cohorts preplanned to play around with the constitution.

  16. #3 Chitonfwa you are being naive. You don’t know how politics work Pa zed. What happened to Vera Chiluba Foundation. Where are all those companies that used to line up to donate to her charity. Open your eyes my brother. Cheat me once, shame on YOU. Cheat me twice, shame on ME. Take this advise to heart. These are crooks and we have seen this movie before. Access Finance used to donate to MMD fund raising dinners and it turns out it was our money being used

  17. Its no surprise that the Mungomba commission looks like its Things fall apart,I dont see any morality in what is happening ,we have seen countries with fluid constitution( no written) but have prospered and maintained good governance.Us with only 13m people we have failed to come up with one, this a shame to the world,Lawyers have taken centre stage in manuplating the masses, but how did the chiefdoms run before a white man brought in his jargons of manipulation? Were rules and laws not there?

  18. Kuku Mudaala Iam moving on Iam yet to write a number of exams in ICT just to add on to my qualification. I have not heard about thís Kenian with his MSC IDMP. Its a question of working hard. Iam now planing my wayout to come and help brothers and sisters who have no chance to come out of bondage. Otherwise my Masters stands and Iam a proud and partriotic Zambian. I dont know where thi NCC is getting but big man let it be so that it over maybe we can start talking of development and make actions.

  19. Kuku ulinshimba, tell them we mwana wakumwesu. This constitution is deadly fraud and will be ashame to those Bishops like Hanjase of UCZ.Catholic has made tremedious contribution to the debvelopment of this country politically, Educationally and health wise just to mention a few. They told pipo that as long as hefty allowances are given even those who refused to attend will.Machungwa, chishimba maybe educated but what have they produced to become known? Nothing and pride landed Rusufa in hell.

  20. LT congrats for the fine presentation. I wish all the zambians a happy festive season and God’s blessings in your lives. Back to the topic, The timing for NCC is too convenient for MMD. When the pipo said lets have a referendum, MMD said no coz they were not going to benefit moneterily. They kept on dragging untill the plan was finalised and now the decisions are made. “Lets call everybody to play and who ever comes will share the cake”. Ver sad indeed.

  21. Can you image the bishop goes to church next sunday and no ones comes for the services in protest of the allowances he or she is going to get from the NCC. God doesnot allow if those people are going to make money God is seeing them and there is punishment for every need.

  22. Kuku what have got to say about the Professor Chirwa and his ethroetics. Can you tell us more about this man we dont him he must be in your age or a few years older than you. The question where was he all these years we have not heard about him. Can he really make a god leader. For what reasons is meeting Sata and HH? Does he want to buy them out or what?

  23. Can LT work a bit hard an move one more stride to bring in video news (Clips) as well. All the best LT, you are just doing well to bring us home news and allow us to participate through comments.

  24. #17 whether you complain on blog or not Mathan and others have donated to MMD.Vera Chiluba was not a political party we mwaice! why do you want to compare two different things? We dont want a situation where Sata starts begging from Taiwanese and puts all donations in his personal accounts.

  25. Ladies and Gentlemen! Is it true that the people participating in the the NCC will get the ZK40……millions? why all this amount? If they are looking at contributing to making a good constitution, they should die a little for their country by sucrificing their time to the NCC. Let not money drive their emotions. Otherwise they are just selling out the nation and delaying development and causing more injury to the poor people in the nation.

  26. # 1 & 2,
I urge you to prepare your mind for a stunning but untrancated MMD victory in 2011.If you think the mechanics of retention through pluralism have dicipated with your vacuos online armchair criticism deficient of rigor and insight,You are in for a roller coaster in politics. Change comes with a critical mass. When we were designing to retire you UNIP since late 1980s, we built the capacity out intellect, skills and consensus. Chiluba was not an architect but a compromise choice.

  27. My dear bros,Chapi and Fizz many thanks.Iam actually impressed with Borniface Kabaso’s entrepreneur wisdom but what he needs to do is filter bad behaviour on this blog and believe me we shall be one voice.

Easy mwaice wandi Prof.chirwa will soon be off tangent, his approach is on speed 78 of LP records, he should have been playing his records at 33 or even 21.We shall dwell on later but he is worth discussing and see how best we can chat the way forward for aspiring 2011 cnadidates.

  28. #31, it is sad that there are people like you who still think that mass corruption can be dressed up as some sort of intellectual strategy. Chiluba may have been a compromise candidate, but he is the one to unwittingly crowned your current leader. Unfortunately, MMD are every bit as corrupt as they have always been – only this now they use sweet words to sugar-coat each corrupt act the president and his minions commit. They raised a lot money by selling Zambians into more slavery.

  29. #34 Ba Chitapankwa, you are very right and I support you with a quote from one philosopher “Eric Fromm” who said and I quote “The successful revolutionary is a statesman, the unsuccessful one a criminal”.Any law is only as only as good the rigour with which it is tested, for the Zambian poor, every single one of our laws is being tested with a weaker hander, the poor have ended up getting a poor service or simply have gone un represented rather for too long and continue to be sent to their death .

  30. Guys I just hope this blog will thrive. I was just listening to Mulemena boys songs on the blogs. I felt home real. Well back to the topic Kuku yes the poor have ended up being We need a Putin for a president who will put the interest of Zambians at heart. It pains countries like Singapore developed from a poor nation to a reachable nation within 5 years. Why cant we?

  31. Hey lusaka times, I am proud of your new look, keep it up. it is a matter of time, soon Mwanawasa will be out and then we have to see how we fight corruption. ChuChu Dr has lost the fight and does not qualify anymore whatever the justification by his spokesman..
We fought him to bring Bulaya to court and many othe cabinet minister..As the fight is national..we shall continue to net criminal and even Mwanawasa when he leaves office

  32. Merry Xmas and happy new years y’all.

Word of advise, please use other facilities to chat to mates and reserve this for other important issues. We must be seen to discuss matters of importance here than exchanging greetings.

  33. And what is new with LPM’s speech that’s got bloggers praising him to death. Pocerty, despair, diseases will continue to afflict the masses as long as LPM is on the seat. The man lacks the three sights a leader need to have: insight, foresight, and hindsight. The fight on curruption will never be won as long as selective persecution is the norm. LPM wake up to reality man. Its past ‘sleep’ time mate.

  34. Donations by Mahthani. This man had his Finance Bank closed in Malawi for not complying with regulations. Finance Bank Zambia has been through insolvency at least once when Mahtani was being investigated. The man does not learn how, he almost died from the lethal attack by Chiluba, though it was not called for. My advice to Mahthani is to keep away from these politicians and do straight business.Am sure he is enjoying the trips to state house and VIP treatment. He has done that with KK and FJT

  35. There is nothing more than the Katumbi capitulation that will haunt Levy more than anything else. Mundia Nalumino’s ghost haunted Kaunda for years and the plunder “chibanda is busy haunting Chiluba. One would have thought Levy being a lawyer would know such kind of “agreements” always have a tendency to explode in the face of the parties involved but alas, Muwelewele is a slumbering one busy snoring not to see the implications of his actions.

  36. Kuku long tym mu fella iwe.Mathani can not be trusted, remember the Carlington maize deal. The guy was FTJ’s “Partner in crime”
    happy festive season bonse.
Sata’s leadership skills put to test over NCC. with his “rebellious MPs”
    Congrats to ARSENAL

  37. Mahtani Donation! Ha ha ha! my foot! That is a pure bribe. We have seen this before many times, havent we? We know about the directive issued to move govt insurance to PICZ, and we can talk about Mulongoti castigating Tansparency International-Zambia for “failing to acknowledge the “progress” Zambia has made in the fight against corruption under the leadership of President Mwanawasa”. Arent we back to were we started from? And who talked about FTJ not being “educated”, there is a whole State

  38. Counsel that we would expect to be above board and see through such schemes but, wasnt he born out of it after all? DISGUSTED!

  39. #41 Iam not here to learn english if you dont understand dont read my comments. Shame! Mulongoti after seeing loud to disloud Katumbi of charges now he has turned his back and banned the copper export. Its a blow under the belt. One thing we should some countries can not live without conflicts and wars so you can see that someone is trying hard to draw us in conflicts. Our politicians must be careful. This Katumbi boy will give us headache if we dont hm out teeth the early the better.

  40. Zambia drops corruption charges against DRC governor
‘Arising from the settlement, Katumbi is at liberty to return to Zambia and engage in any lawful business that he may consider appropriate,’
Katumbi in response donated all his assets in Zambia, amounting to eight billion kwacha (about two million dollars), to the Zambian government but demanded a truck of diamonds which were confiscated during the investigations. Ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!

  41. Yes Ladies and Gentlemen,#31 Senior Citizen,yo english is very poor, why not start pre school, and congrats LT for the nice new design of the site i employ you to ban ‘impersonators’ completely from blogging ‘Chintomfya’ epowaba Mwaice!

  42. Hi pipo, happy festive season and well done for the new face of this….you know?
You have wonderful contributions on this blog.i hope ,the leaders (GOV) do read this:they can learn alot about what pipo feel.
    Blessings to you all.
Lets just avoid sending too radicle issues on the blog. All in all, this blog can change zambia for the better. Thanks and congrats to LPM for the nice speech

  43. Easy #25,

Which Bishop was that? I hope that really happened…. these so called men of god should not turnish God’s name by being part to day-light roberies in NCC

  44. #51 Lex I was just imagining such kind of protest could happen. Anyway in countries like Nigeria church leaders are wealther than businessmen because of collections. Its a must every sunday 5 90kg bags must be full with neira but on the other hand they do good service to the community building hospitals, schools. In cities like Lagos you only find 100 beggers. This is a city with population est of 100 millions. Gods pipo must be humble and not lovers of money because God can get angry and punish

  45. I thought Matani and levy would be smarter than this. In the wake of all this talk about corruption (The PICZ and finance bank issue) how do they come out in public and give/get the kickback? One can only wonder how much more was given in private, and to who?

  46. #54, King David,

Just the knowledge that Zambians WONT act, anyway, makes them do all the nosense in day light.
What do you make of Zong Mining Industries (Chinese) donation in day light? It is the same thing. If it was taiwan giving K111 million to PF, the POST would have sung all the songs they know.

  47. #55 LEX
You are right about Taiwan giving PF money. So where is the decency? Besides this is a private company Chinese, at least Taiwan was the government through the embassy in Malawi.

  48. Remember that LPMs “private” acct from which he sent Chipoya to withdraw at least 4 billion ZMK in cash was held at Finance bank. This money must have come from this business man and Chinese businessmen who are busy reaping wealth out of this country without regard for a Zambian worker. It explains govt’s blind eye to Chinese maltreatment of their Zambian workers. For Mathani, obviously what else can explain delayed bankings of govt revenue and latent directives to shift govt accts to FB. SHAME!

  49. Gentlemen this better than Taiwan monies. Its our hard earned currency but missplaced that we should be fighting for. Anyone in Zambia should confront Mr. Matani also to donate UTH so that that hospital can CT machines for scanning inside parties of the patient to help in diagnosis. Critising this way wont help but confronting these guys with such more developmental projects. If I was home I would get the Chinese firm to build better houses for its workers. How much is a bag of cement anyway?

  50. I have seen Zambian copper pass on its way to south china where fnished products like refrigerator can produced. By the way China yesterday just commissioned the longest ever railway to Tibet using Zambian steel and copper including cobalt. Meanwhile we in Zambia we still using dukuduku locomotives and its takes five days from Kitwe to L-Town.

  51. Matani is a Zambian based businessman he just need to pushed and contribute to national development if he refuses then to hell with him.

  52. #58-60 Easy
Matani is ‘bed mates’ with the head of state. If LPM does not see it fit for the money to go to UTH but MMD, who else in Z can tell him where to donate the money? Is it UTH that tranfered its accounts from Zanaco to FB, or insurance from ZSIC to PICZ? No. So the ‘kickbacks’ must go to the one doing him business favours. They do not care about UTH.

  53. Chuchu Mushololwa, just shut up, you cannot urge your members from Mad Muwelewele Devils (MMD)party to put zedians first when you, yourself have put chinese first in your New Dealer govn. And you know your members they will do what you the leader does.

  54. The K100m donated the Mad Muwelewel Devils party is in reward for what???? Why donate to the party not the country? Mahtan we are watching you!! so ftj was right!! remember he still got his sympathys in almost, all companies, including parastals.

  55. Easy #60, I got pre-school application forms for you ready to go. You dont have to pay anything, I will look into that. All you need to do is turn up next week monday. Should you find problems getting to school I am available to give you lifts to and from school till year 12. All your books have been bought. Any dramas just let me know mate.

    Best of luck EASY

  56. #65,
thats is very funny indeed, but let us not loose focus of the discussion at hand. Please keep such jokes between your personal emails.

  57. #58
At least the Taiwan money to PF was for specific purpose stated in the letters that they exchanged. PF is not in power and has nothing to offer Tiawan in that sense. Here you are talking about private companies briding the party in power, and openly so. Too much of a coinidence after after govt. bank accounts and insurance policies got moved to Matani’s companies.

  58. Mutunza#65 we are not here to learn english or edit other people comments but to air our view on important issues concerning the development of our country, leave easy alone and let him express himself freely without intimidation.

  59. Kindo kibelafi mba mwabana ba mfumu?Kibusiku ba Lefi kutukwe pa LT.Ala mukinjeko amano webo nambala 64 nababiyo.Kasi kisi, kisi kasi ba Lefi babifya palwa Katumbi umwina Saire mba?We all ifimumbwa fyakwa Shakapanga.
