Thursday Zambia Football Briefs

Share

Ghana Football Association (GFA) say new Zambia coach Herve Renard was informed that his contract as assistant coach was not going to be renewed ahead of its July, 2008 expiry date long before the announcement of his appointment by Faz.

According to Ghana’s Happy FM radio website quoting an unnamed GFA source said
Renard was free to join any team of his choice.

”We can’t force him to stay because we had already decided not to renew his contract,” a GFA source told the Happy FM.

“The FA appreciates his work with the national team but we can’t afford it anymore.”

Renard is expected in Zambia by the weekend to discuss terms with Faz over a long-term deal to lead the Zambia national team and his main brief will be to qualify the team to the 2010 Africa and World Cup finals in Angola and South Africa respectively.

Renard club experience as coach spans the last nine years with spells at French lower league teams SC Draguigan from 1999 to 2001 and AS Cherbourg from 2005 to 2007 before being Le Roy’s assistant with the Black Stars.

In-between, Renard was assistant trainer at Chinese top side Shanghai Shenhua from 2002 to 2003.

He also coached current English Conference team Cambridge United in the 2004/2005 season while they were in League Two before begin relegated at the end of the same season.

Meanwhile, a 24-member Zambia goes into camp on Sunday in Lusaka to begin their training camp for their May 17 Caf Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) 1st round return-leg qualifier against Botswana.

And the Zambia Under-20 team will go into camp on May 18 ahead the side’s participation in a three-nation’s invitational youth football tournament in Saudi Arabia.

The team will be camped for a week ahead of the three-nation’s tournament that will run from May 25-29 in Saudi Arabia.

The Under-20 team will use the tournament to prepare for its Rwanda 2009 CAF Africa Youth Championship first round, first leg home qualifier against Mauritius on June 26.

  1. I enjoy playing play station 2 Fifa games, one thing I have learnt in manager mode, is patience and focus. How does this relate to the above subject? I think FAZ is wise to take this young Coach, because 1. he is not expensive 2. he is hungry for success which means he will put in his heart in the job and try his very best for Zambia in return we will benefit. Money is not what he will be after but a reputation for himself 3. He is a young man and so most of the things he has learnt he can put in practise, he has quiet an interesting experience on three different continets, Asia, Europe and Africa 4. the Fact that he is under forty provides a good relationship with the young players

  2. You have a point #1 Abraham Cape Town. From the info I have picked from this site and other sources about this man, I see in him a wounded buffalo angering and hungering for self redemption. Whether this unsung hero can turn the Zedian situation to his glory and more importantly to the benefit of Zambian Football will depend on how he adapts to the intricacies of our football politics while maintaining his focus. I wish him good luck and a happy stay in Zed.

  3. I guess sometimes you need adversity to succeed. Look at Chelsea’s manager. Nobody gave him a chance and that motivated him to put in his best and I hope the same with this man Kalu has brought.

  4. You guys dont understand footy. Why should you want to hire a coach with that record to grant you places at the next Africa and World cups? Grant had a very good record in Isreal and his only pressure was to be better than Jose M at Chelsea. We want success and success does not come cheap. You cant leave in a fantacy world when it terms of footy. I wish this man the very best of luck. FAZ have made their first descision and it has shown how shallow and poor they are when it comes to descision making. Zambia is sinking slowly and everyone is helping it sink. All the best for the qualifying games.

  5. While doing my Financial Management training, i was taught on how Managers of Divisionalised companies succeed. Either the material is good (the case of Chelsea) and not the Division Manager himself!
Or the economic situation in the operational are favours success or the Manager himself is a team player among other that make him succeed.
Therefore, #1 your analysis is perfect. #3 The success of Chelsea is not as a result of AV but the material (Players)!

  6. Tulabilima ukupela -long term contracts- we experiment things. After failing to perform and terminate the so called contracts we are forced to pay in full – against our wishes.

  7. History has it that many young coaches succeed. Examples, Mourinho at FC Porto and Chelsea; Didier Deschamps at Monaco, Pitso Mosimane at Supersport (RSA) etc.
I think on this one FAZ made a wise decision. If we cant afford big name coaches, so be it with Renard. What has Parreira done with Bafana Bafana? Lets give the young man a chance.
I agree with the guys #1-3.

  8. Hervé Renard (born 30 September 1968 in Aix-les-Bains) is a French football manager and former player who curently manages the Zambia national team, a job he took up in May 2008.Playing career
Renard played for French sides AS Cannes, Stade de Vallauris and SC Draguignan in a playing career which lasted from 1983 to 1998.
    Coaching career
Renard began his coaching career with SC Draguignan in 1999, leaving in 2001. He was Assistant at Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua from 2002 to 2003, and managed English side Cambridge United in 2004.[1] He became manager of AS Cherbourg in 2005, leaving them in 2007[2] to become Assistant to Claude Le Roy for the Ghana national side.

  9. Everyone has a chance to succeed in life but remember this works only as team especially in sport where competition is the key. This little known man must be given chance if doesnt make it there is always room to change and get a new coach. Remember coaching like talent is a short time appearance, stars are born. I have supported the appointment of PP as coach but his failures brought him down. I believe in myself in doing things but these dont work out its always good to seek advice from outside so is the case of Zambia.

  10. #1 in case you did not know US$20,000 for a coach a month is far beyond even the pay for the BOZ Governor. And just how much do they wish to pay his assistants I guess US$1,200 like what Patrick was getting paid!!! Not even my supervisor gets that kind of money depsite him being an international (expat) staff members. So he is not cheap, that I can tell you, maybe he only becomes cheap because someone else is footing the bill!!! Like I said before I have no confidence in this guy and I am ready to swallow my words!!

  11. P Phiri has a better VC than this guy. Just because he is French does not make him an exception. The facts are there to see. The worst thing is that he is signing a long contract. I lov football but this guy does not cut it for me. The same poeple who are complaining will stone this guy come July.

  12. we can’t just sign a short contract and then after we have seen his performance then we can extend it than going for long one then regret at when it too late. Iam not saing he is not good coach but its just a coation/observation

  13. Problem is we never learn, part of the reason FAZ is broke is because of Ziese who from what I hear they were paying him even when he was not working because of contractual obligations. The man was busy with prostitutes in Gambia at the expense of FAZ, whether that was a lesson well lernt surely FAZ does not exhibit it this time around!

  14. Cry, Cry and Cry. Why? Its been done. It will definitely come to be that Renard coaches Zambia. So what is done, is done. Lets give it a chance. He is only human and there is 50% chance of him either failing or succceeding. Time will tell the true skills and tactics of this guy.
Circumstances change a lot of things. This guy might have failed elsewhere but he may have learnt from his failures and is now ready to take up new challenges.
Remember, there is are permanant failures in life. Bintu Bikinja (Things change)and change is inevitable.
Remember the Barcelona coach, Frank Rijkaard. He once (2006) won the double of La Liga and UEFA CL trophies but has now been fired. Don’t things change?

  15. Bintu Bikingya indeed Mwape, but ine mwandi I am very pessimistic about this guy and about the whole soccer scene in Zambia. Can someone who knows tell us, what constitutes the bench in soccer, is it only a coach, manager, physician and team doctor? What happens off field which helps Brazil even when they assemble a second string side you would still want to watch them?

  16. why should you give this guy a chance with his record, what makes him so special. Why not give phiri another chance. PP never qualified for the CAN in hist first asignment but managed in his second dont you think he can do better this time. Phiri is better than this wanker.

  17. # 17 This french guy is the national team boss hence he has to give 100% and the players have to produce that. If he cant see that a player lucks fitness you cant blame the doctors because the dont pick the team.

  18. Africa will never change but always behind. If people cant see anything wrong with this guy then kaya. You cant defend your own but this failure who has never achieved anything as a coach.

  19. Bintu Bikingya!!!! Hola, byepi balongo bami?
Lets just give him some time and we will judge him from his record with Chipolopolo.

  20. Bintu Bikingya fosho!!!! Hola, byepi balongo bami?
Lets just give him some time and we will judge him from his record with Chipolopolo.

  21. 19, I mean just what makes up a good football team? Is it just a coach? That was my question.

  22. Zico is one of the greatest players of all time. He coached Japan during the 2006 world cup. Japan failed to win even a single game.

Guus hiddink, renowned coach, took Australia to the 2006 world cup. Did they go far? no.

Let’s not judge Renard before he even takes over. Remember we are talking about a man who is there to prove a point. But without our support he will definitely fail to deliver.

We should not expect miracles though. Quality, commitment, and zeal of the players is essential at all costs. See how our brothers in west africa are doing. The players there are always aiming higher. Countless number of them playing in high profile leagues.

  23. Something has been laking in our game for a while now. I feel, it is because we struggle to employ tactics and strategies and this was apparent from CAF club competitions and recent African cups. Zimbabwe’s sides are doing well in their competitions, we have to be able to sure up and play a far more tactical game if we hope to contend. With football in Africa becoming more clinical and technical it’s time we gave ourselves a helping hand.

  24. continued from 25
For me, that is one big issue that needs to be looked at. It means having some insurence that when we play Cam we don’t get crushed 5-0. The experience the players gained from previous competitions is absolutely priceless.

  25. What difference does it make for a good coach to drill tired legs of the current players in the national team that has failed zed from time to time? Too much bukoko na basimbi bafana aba. We need fresh blood. Small boys in the likes of Kalaba and Clifford. Personally i feel FAZ needs to do more to help the hired coach. We have seen good coaches failing a team to the AFCON. Talk of RSA. This is the right time to poch and grome boys even from the rural zed. It is not in dispute that we have very talented boys who lack exposure in remote zed. I tell you, it will be very painful to miss 2010 cup both in RSA and Angola. So the right time to fix this mess is now. I have delivered my messege yoooo.

  26. #24 you have no football knowledge. Australia has never qualified to the world cup since 1936 and them qualifying in 2006 and reaching the quarter finals in the group in 2006 was a massive achievment. So please dont put hiddink and this french guy in the same league mate. Mwiinga mate, I dont hate this guy or FAZ but I just want what is best for Zambian football. I am a coach and truct me the coach has a bigger impact on them game than you think. The players listen to what the coach says and what system to adapt. A company can not achieve success with bad management. A good coach can make a bad team look average. Do you think if PP managed Man u, they word win any medals?

  27. Okey The Man, I went through the blog looking at where you might have made reference to hating the guy, I did not mean to assume that way. Anyhow, I guess you have a point, my question was if am to be more blunt, is there a time when psychologists, motivational speakers etc get involved to give the team confidence or this is just what some people in other countries grow up to be?

  28. I dont think this guy will have a real impact on the players. His CV is not too impresive.he achieved less in his playing days whilest players like to listen to people who have achieved alot of success.Kalu evens commands more respect than this guy.Psychologically the guy wont have a real impact ,no respect. Its one reason why phiri could not tick.best wishes.how good are our players in English?or unserstanding foreigners?

  29. so lets just wait and experiment with this guy. What if they sigh him to a long term contract then he is no good…what happens then? For now i guess we support him ,though one thing i love about zambian supporters is when things go wrong,we can complain

  30. Im rely scared i dont know if this guy wil make an impact but any way wil give him a chance like coach paulsen he took our team to the Africa cup finals 1994 and no on expected it this one may do the same

  31. Does anybody have any latest information about Lucky Msiska being the assistant coach of the national team?

  32. #3 Chelsea didn’t need the best coach. They had the players. Patrick Phiri could have coached them and succeeded. In fact Jose Mourinho could be said to have been a failure when he left because with all those superstars he wasn’t winning games. Teams that need coaching are Portsmouth, Bolton, etc. You can actually see that Rednapp is a good coach by taking such non-supertars to the top half.

  33. I have no problem with experimenting, but I think you should only take those risks if the World Cup is four years away and not less than two! That way you can make your changes in two years. What are FAZ and the contributors on this blog basing the idea of him being hungry to succeed on? I agree, he is our coach now and we have to give him the support, but this choice is worrisome.

  34. #35 J.Mourinho won two consecutive League titles at Chelsea & the FA Cup.At Porto he won the Champions League & UEFA Cup with no big stars.Real Madrid for two years or so before F.Capello the had all the big stars but won nothing.Though i wanna agree with you that H.Redkapp has done a good with Pompey with average players.

  36. MAN….Patrick phiri all the way!! but u know what the bali was also SLEEPY during the cameroon-zambia game ba phiri was busy watching on the sideline as if his in dreamland when we went down 1-0.Why didnt he scream at the boyz but im sure he planned to lose….The chapter is over.im giving Renard my full support he needs it u y’all how hard it is to work in zed as a high profile coach.its a new era hope zambia all the best will always be a chipolopolo fan no matter wat!!BUT PLEASE WE NEED MIRACLES!!

  37. I loved as much as you will obtain performed right here. The caricature is tasteful, your authored material stylish. however, you command get bought an shakiness over that you want be handing over the following. ill undoubtedly come more in the past once more since precisely the similar nearly very incessantly inside case you defend this increase.
