Zambia 2 – 3 Iran

Share

The Zambia National team lost to Iran today in a friendly match played in the Azadi Stadium. Iran had to rely on a Hadi Aghili penalty kick two minutes from time, to beat Zambia 3-2.

The referee awarded Iran a penalty kick in the 12th minute, and Javad Nekounam, who was the captain of Iran, converted the spot kick.

Gholamreza Rezaei made it 2-0 for Iran just after the half hour mark, and the two teams went in to the break with Iran winning comfortably.

In the second half, and Zambia took full advantage of Iran’s poor play , and hit with two goals in 3 minutes around the hour mark.

The game was heading to a 2-2 draw but Iran was awarded a penalty kick when Hossein Kaebi was pulled down in the penalty area in the 88th minute. Hadi Aghili stepped up, and scored with ease to give Iran their first win in over 9 months.

Zambia scored through strikers Clifford Mulenga and Rodger Kola. The Zambian team head for Ghana, Accra on Monday morning

  1. Iraq’s first win in nine months?! Two Penalties in one match?! Hey something has to be done to our defence. We seem to have no problems scoring but a lot of them hen it comes to defending.

Not a bad show, though. Lets tighten our defence and beat dem Togolese!

  2. Iran is ranked 51 and Zambia 67 on the FIFA ranks 2008. These teams both are good, but I feel the Zambian players have no confidence in themselves. Our old team that perished in GABON had more confidence. They played neatly and never allowed their defence to be beaten easily. Even without professionals, they played football that made the African continent tremble. These new guys must start winning if they want to qualify for anything.

  3. I don’t think this was a case of lack of confidence #3. The second penalty was clearly a gift from the referee. Outside the penalties by the way, I thought the referee was fair. From what I saw, Zambia’s problems are fixable. They controlled much of the second half and came back from a 2-0 deficit on the road. I agree with #4, defensively, we need a lot of work.

  4. Good show boys. We just need to defend well in Accra vs Togo. Dont give away cheap penalties. Man-mark Adebayo and he easily gets frustrated but if you touch him in the 18 area he also easily goes to ground. I watch him regularly at the Emirates.

  5. Hi Guys,

If interested you can watch the game on www(dot)iranfootballonline(dot)com.

I must say that we didn’t do badly at all. The first half was tough for the boys and we went into the halftime 0-2 down. Again some of the defending was schoolboy. J. Musonda needs to be shown the door. The chap was at fault for the second goal, he lost his attacker at the far post. The chap tries hard, but he just doesn’t have the ability to be an international footballer. I know that Clive Hachilensa was poor at AFCON and has rightly been shown the door, but if you analyse the games Joseph Musonda was equally bad.

The second half belonged to us and the only reason they won was a Diramba

  6. penalty. Kennedy Mudenda was adjudged to have pulled back their player in the box. There was a little bit of contact, but the Iranian dived.

The first half was all about long balls from the back and the Iranians were able to contain us easily. In the second half we switched to a 4-3-3 with Kola leading the line upfront and Mayuka on the right and Clifford on the left. The change made all the difference and we played some good football. In the middle of the park we had Rainford, Felix and Isaac. I have to say that while it isn’t the biggest midfield they are all footballers and have good control. I must say that Isaac impressed me today. He was tigerish in the tackle and made good

  7. use of the ball. Felix was his usual spritely self and caused them more and more problems as the game wore on. Rainford was nice and steady and I think the more these three play together the better Zambia will perform. They showed some good chemistry in the second half and their movement caused the Iranians a headache.

At the back, well it’s well documented that we need some help, but I think the Frenchman has recognised this and I only hope that we see this area develop.

  8. Whisper thanks for that website i have just watched the second half of the game. The boys played well especially from the 50th minute.Though Iran looked like the have been playing together for sometime.Good goals by Clifford .M & R.Kolala.The midfield looked good and Mayuka,Clifford,Kolala and W.Chinyama impressed me.I see Chamanga losing his place in the team to R.Kolala who plyed after replacing Chamanga. The guys on Iranfootball.com say the Zambian team came straight from the the airport to the game.
Those who saw Ronald’s goal(header) against Chelsea thats the type Clifford scored though it came off the left post into the net.Cross from the right by Chinyama.

  9. Whisper nice analysis i just saw your comments now after i sent mine. The boys were tired or maybe jet lag in the first half having come from the Airport straight.Otherwise it was a good friendly game for the boys.Iran is a strong team believe me.
At least i saw the Frenchman standing and giving instructions to R.K after he scored the 2nd goal.As i said i have just been watching the entire 2nd half.

  10. Well guys, Big thanks to our Iranian brothers for that tremendous resource, thanks to the guys for finding and sharing the link. So Happy to watch beloved Zambia playing! Ok, so our defence looked much better with Chintu heading the back line thankfully with no one flapping at the ball. Although I cannot stress this enough because it cost us the first two goals!!! Billy, Chintu, Joseph, whoever is in defense needs to clear that ball, It’s the golden rule in defense that you don’t let the ball bounce in the box or anywhere. Those two balls could have been cleared before they bounced! Offense was ok, but we dwindled towards the end, i’d like to see more productivity. Hope we can…

  11. …Hope we can take more care of the ball with more patient build-up play and keeping possession when need be.

Good luck to team, we must keep on better…

  12. Good luck, keep on getting better.

Whisper, i disagree, it was penalty. Whether he dived or not is irrelevant because Mudenda did pull his arm.

  13. Guys this is what we expected a loss. I’m again telling all your, just admit BA ZAMBIA MAKULA. #13 MODERATE IS THE ONLY PERSON WHO IS REAL. Anyway i’m not used to lossing teams, so i don’t know how it feels to be a loser. MAYBE THEY WILL WIN TOGO, GOOD LUCKY BOYS

  14. i watched the whole game and chintu kampamba was the only one who played well,i give him the man of the match award, the rest of the team needs to work on their fitnes and that #3 guy his the one who allowed the second goal.the new coach should teach the boys to stop using long balls, when you know that u dont have height advantage.
all in all they we played well,we could have scoled 4 goes had it not been for chama boy, muyuka, kalaba missing those chances we had.
wish u all the best boyz ,win or lose zed for ever

  15. Actually I expected Zambia to be taught a footballing lesson. But it appears as though the Iran that turned up was not the real Iran. In competition, Iran are a formidable foe.

  16. thanks for the site. I watched the entire game, it was well balanced and like i said Zambia need alot of adjustments. I saw Iran players were taller than our team and when they brought in #3 he was shaking up the Iran defence. Also stamina was lacking with our players. lastly, those two panelties Iran converted were fack, but our boys played good the entire match. As much as i am a zambia soccer team hater, these guys impressed me and i will start following with the stats. Lets give the new coach and his players support. GO MOTHER ZAMBIA

  17. I’m just from seeing the goals. Hey we’ve strikers. Good goals from our boys. The penalties awarded to the Iranians were questionable and more work needs to be done on our defence, though.

  18. Abantu Baya #1, bola panshi, aba bilima tabaya… Zambia did a great job, this team is a new team, new coach. Remember its a combination of Under 21, 20 and young senior players. Yes we lack defenders, its only that our FAZ and coaching staff proffesionals are only strikers. They need to call those boys in Sweden Boyd Mwila and crew. In Finland there are some good ones too. And we need Misheck Lungu back in the team…

  19. #19 Quote “the team needs to workon their fitness…” End Quote.
Half the team arrived the day before the game and the other half on the day of the game. So one would expect the boys to be tired. The Iranians even tried to ngotiate for Zambia to stay an extra two days so they (the Iranians) could get the toughest possible opposition.

There is still hope of walloping Togo. Our boys were tired and playing against a good team.

  20. The penalties given were fairly soft calls, especially the second one, but the second goal by Iran was horrid defense. Bad play by the defender, and Mweene should stop that shot. Clifford scored a nice header, Kola’s goal was ok. It is good that the young players are getting a chance, and taking full advantage of it.

  21. We dont learn,Tfll these boyz that MAKULA so they improve. If you praise them before they improve they will become proud and end up like mbesuma.A good team wins and thats what i want as a zambian ,anyhting less no good words from me.BA MUMBWE::Win against togo or……..

  22. If we can’t beat Iran,it’s means Togo shall easily beat us in Ghana unless our defenders will do some miracles.I strongly believe that Chipolopolo boys main problems are in defence. But there is always room for improvement.Things may improve soon.Let’s just not lose hope.Come 2010,our team will be taking part in world cup in South Africa!!!!!!!!!

  23. Same Case and Typical Zambian Mentally..i think J Musonda be Kept in the team coz thats the only way players improve..not one mistake.. ati show him the door..thats not the way people not the way..i jus watched the full game and was pretty impressed with zambia’s play..execpt the issue of playin Long Balls on every play…incase we havent realised all our strikers are Short..Maybe J Mulenga is the only tall striker we have..Am sure ba coach will see that and bring the ball down…and turn it into a short passing game

I THINK A GOOD STYLE OF PLAY THAT WILL BENEFIT ZAMBIA IS 4-3-3 we have the speed and the skill to damage any team

  24. The problem is you think Zambia is a top team. We need to keep losing, fix our mistakes and learn from them. My feeling has always been that the Zambian team that wins or gets to the final of the Africa Cup will qualify for the World Cup. It has to be that strong.

  25. We need to work hard, in our group for us to qualify to the africa cup or to the second round which is world cup qualifiers we need to top the group reason being that ereteria withdrew & there are only three countries in our group. 26. “the shortest zambian on the field jumps over hosseini and scores.” clifford goal being decribed by a fan Iran

  27. Fair result especially that we lost on 2 penalties.

Its great to see that Zambian lads are able to come from behind to force 2 good goals.

Please, coach work on that defence immediately with all the seriousness it deserves.

  28. Zambia is going nowhere. It will be the same old story again. What players do you have that can compete with the likes of Adebayor? All the Zambian players are either playing in the mdiocre Zambian and South African league. Or in week European leagues in weak or below average European teams. One thing you have to ask yourself is, the likes of Ivory Shame.

One thing you have to ask yourself is, the likes of I. Coast, Cameroun, Ngeria, Ghana etc, what si it that they have that they have been successful in African football? Shame.

  30. # 35, 36 are you a Zambian? If so better start sapoting insolo. Adebayo can not perform by himself even if he plays for AK47. he needs to be fed. We have the skill pa Zed and that much you know. we need to sapot the lads watch the game they played and see how they hustled. what is it that you want in score? do u want all the lands to be playing in EPL? stop being a sadist mwana.

  31. Tuka Mupama Togo ichachine…. the boys did well considering there was Diramba, I watched the game.
Well done boys, Chama boy needs to be careful otherwise the youngstar Roger Kola will bench him forever……

  32. Roger Kola has come to stay, he has definately taken over from Mbesuma and chamanga. The team is good, what more with the introduction of the Staff Serageant, Captain of the side, Christopher Katongo?

  33. Roger Kola has come to stay, he has definately taken over from Mbesuma and chamanga. The team is good, what more with the introduction of the Staff Serageant, Captain of the side, Christopher Katongo? Togo will have it rough this time around.

  34. but Zed defence is weak.. too weak.. awe mwandi.. how does a team give up 2 penalties.. national team.. i dont think i know of a team that leaks penalties like us.
didnt we learn a lesson from afcon? no offense to abena billy mwanza and joseph musonda but the psl just aint cutting it., its ot good enough.. if ur ever to improve as players you need to step up to the next level, elo its not even like they are playing for top teams in psl.. they are mediocre clubs at best..
chipolopolo mwansebanya.. but ima back you still coz thats what we do.. Zed 4 life !!

  35. Guys how did you watch the whole game? I have been trying to open some trailer (from the website Iranian footballonline.com) to watch the highlights but to no avail. Somebody help please.

  36. I was impressed with what I saw.Apart from good style of play the lads demonstrated something I haven`t seen in a long time in them and that was tenacity and passion.Coming from 2 nil down and levelling the score demonstrated real tenacity. When the ref awarded the second dubious penalty, the lads were on the ref arguing their case.Even though the outcome of the refs decision wasn`t going to change but I saw some desire in them to get a good result.Renard was also busy on the sideline giving some instructions. These are the little things in crucial games that make a difference.
Mweene should have done a better job on the second goal than conceeding at the near post. That was poor goalkeeping.

  37. Billy,

Go to the site and then click on ‘channel three’ from there you should see some icons for the 1st and 2nd half of the game. I hope it works.

ba-Black Feet, my decision to ask for J Musonda to be retired is not based solely on this game. Look at all the AFCON games and he was a liability. The guy is poor and his place should be taken my Chinyama. The U20 defence looked okay especially the full backs Kachinga and Zimba, I hope they join their friends in the full international team.

  38. Man u players are small even compared to the other teams or Chelsea, its upto the team or coach s strategy.A coach first assess the players then decides the best system for them and not the other way round

  39. Lets toughen the mentallity of our defenders to that of the likes of John Soko, Yellow man, Kapambwe Mulenga, Chilengi etc, MTSRIP, and work on their skill levels. A team without a good defence will not go anywhere in the world football of today. We played well against Egypt at the AFCON with a bit of adjustment to our team with the same players. Ivory Coast was no match to Egypt at AFCON even with Drogpa but we stood firm. We can do even better against Togo as they are not as good as Egypt or I. Coast.

  40. Whisper Mudala wandi…this is the same issue am talkin about…J Musonda is alright maybe all he needs a diff position

in ur own opinion if u took an under 20 player *a defender in particular* and send him to the AFCON…u thnk he will with stand the pressure

    we need experince..which takes time

Choma1..Jus one question.. Man Utd has short players for sure but do u see them Playin High Long Balls throughout the whole game..??

  41. Black Feet,

I don’t know what other position we could play the chap in. Like I said the guy really tries and is a patriot, but I doubt his ability.

Those same younger defenders went to the U20 World Cup and played well. Zimba did really well against Diego Capel who was one of Sevilla’s best players this season. It looks like the boy has earned himself a transfer to Real Madrid. Zimba contained Capel when Zed played Spain. We have all seen how our U20’s are coming of age and playing well in the midfield and striking departments. All I am saying is that we all know that we have a problem with the defence and I am sure a couple of the U20’s could help out.

  42. Whisper has a point. Age means nothing. Skill is what is important. Its time the U20 defenders graduated to the senior team.

  43. #50 A Manager first looks at the calibre of players he has at disposal then choses a system that would suit them

  44. It was a good result for Zambia especially for the coach.A defeat will make him work extra hard for the game against Togo in ghana. wishing them good lucky in the game against togo.

  45. It was a good result for zambia especially for the coach. This will make him work extra hard for the game against togo in ghana. wishing the team lucky in the game against togo.

  46. I personally feel Renard can read the game he made a double substitution which changed the game instantly.
He brought in Chinyama and Kola for James and Clive,in less than two minutes Chinyama crossed the ball to clifford which resulted into a goal.
Five minutes later the golden boy himself (Kola) come to the party with a lovely goal after a neat pass from midfielder of the day Isaac Chansa.

  47. That was definitely one of Iran’s worst games ever…
They are always so good but this time i don’t know what happened.
But anyway they won and they deserved it.

  48. Saudi Arabia under 20 held by Zambia Under 20.
Saudi 1 Zambia 1. The scorer for Zambia Stophira Sunzu.

  49. we are moving in the right direction, since now our coach has assesed the deffence.the worst we should expect is the draw against togo . all the best chipopolo

  50. I think Whisper is right lets try other guys especially on the right side of defence.W.Chinyama is one new guy who is doing well.Chintu has made a huge difference since taking over from Nhetani.Edwin Phiri is another guy playing competitive football in Sweden.Though i am not sure if he is a regular.H.Himmonde is a bit raw maybe with time he can get better.
There is that other young man with the U23’s.He is the Captain of Pretoria University in S.A.I think he is Nkausu or something he plays on the Right Wing of Defence guys like these should be tried in friendly games.

    haha good on you dude…

but anyway u got some good pointers there Whisper man…and am totally with you and most ur ideas..:))

where is Sebastian Mwansa i think that kid has a bright future he needs to hang out with the senior team more..

by the way lets not forget that the teams that have played in libya and Iran are not the full squad..and am sure with the other missing players we can maybe build a formidable team BE4 2010..

  56. u have to actually download the game..and not jus clickin on it

  61. awe ma guys leave nkeche alone if she wants ur number she will ask u.

anyway the game was not bad overall. coach should improve on defense tighten it a bit.

i was definitely impressed with second half. the boys were holding the ball well and passing it around. second “goal” a through ball impressive stuff. this is how the team should have played in the first half. we are improving keep it chipolopo.

did anyone see the match between Ghana vs Australia?
