A multi billion kwacha expansion of the Zambia Revenue Authority [ZRA] yard in Nakonde district in Northern Province will start before the end of 2008.
And construction of 28 low cost houses for junior officers operating at Nakonde border is progressing well.
District commissioner Edwin Sinyinza has confirmed the development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services [ZANIS].
Mr Sinyinza says the multi billion kwacha expansion of ZRA Nakonde border check point will commence before the end of December.
” All is set for the commencement of the multi-billion expansion project of the Nakonde ZRA yard and construction works are expected to start before the end of this year,” Said Sinyinza.
Mr. Sinyinza said all the clearing agents and other people operating from containers placed outside ZRA yard have been directed to ensure that all the containers are removed within the next 48-hours.
He said the containers and other make-shift shops should be erected at other designated places approved by the district council.
He however, said he was happy that the move to relocate the containers has been well received by all the stakeholders who have since started moving containers and other make-shift shops to other designated places.
The district commissioner disclosed that a bull dozer from Kasama was expected to arrive any day to start demolishing structures and prepare the land for the commencement of the expansion exercise.
Mr Sinyinza said the government was expected to hand over the site to the contractor immediately after all the unnecessary structures have been pulled down.
” The expansion of Nakonde border check point follows the upgrading of the station that has seen remarkable increase in the revenue collection,” Mr Sinyinza added.
Nakonde is currently the second largest collector of revenue after Chirundu in Zambia.
And construction of 28 low cost houses for junior officers operating at the border is progressing well.
District commissioner Sinyinza said the contractor has just finished laying the foundation and will start working on the super structures.
” Yes, I can confirm to you that the construction of low-cost houses for junior officers operating at Nakonde border check point is progressing well and moving on schedule,” Mr Sinyinza said.
He said once completed, the houses which are located along the Nakonde/ Malawi international Road in Katozi area will be allocated to officers under the Drug Enforcement Commission [DEC], ZRA, Police and the Immigration department.
This is the phase one of the project in which a total of 100 houses are to be constructed at the end of the project.

Yes, beautify all the border posts, they look so horrible
Fire bun DEC and Police for fighting against de vegetable matter weh Jah mek grow pon we yard!
Pa ZED we have money!!! Why do people we’ve no money???
They need to concentrate in modernizing the methods of collecting taxes because the current system is susceptible to corruption. There is need to review the way duty is calculated because the present system assumes Zambia is a producer of finished goods and therefore total amount of duty paid on goods sometimes is unreasonable.
That border collects alot of money for Zambia, it needs better facility like accross in Tanzania
Too much repeatation in this news column ba LT. Don’t you have an editor? It makes the whole reading soooo boring.
Zifyanji koko kukaya wayaya. Amilimo mizama sana yoyo, tulimunzila tukwiza mukwavwilizya.

Yes the border facilities at Nakonde border are pathetic.
If the custom services and infrustructure can be modernized to that of Tunduma, it will go a long way to improving efficiency of custom processing and decrease corruption and congetion. The place is dirty. We certainly do not need donor funding to clean the hips of rubbish and never ending streams of trucks.
Good luck
It is a long overdue issue, look at Tunduma which was least developed as compared to nakonde is far much better, clearing terminal the roads, shops. just speed up the construction and prepare Chembe because people will stop using Kapiri especially congolese goods and the copperbelt.the bridge will act as catalyst for fast development of that area interms economy. so all sorts vices will be found at that border post.cholera, social desease will be high. so please put inplace infrastructure before the economic boom of that area.
This is great good news. Very long overdue. But everything has a start so we hail that idea. Please go ahead, that boarder is a great money spinner for ZRA/GRZ. We would like the RDA to emulate and likewise work on the Great North Road leading to the same boarder. We have a good road this side of Serenje and part of Mpika, but after Mpika the story remains sad. Everyone knows these infrastructures are critical to our economy and the long blind eye to such areas of our economy is deadly. We have that when RDA gets funding work will be the priority and not workshops and serminars which are used to rip off the same developmental funds in favour of individuals pockets for building houses.
Ok ba ZRA now shud also improve the working conditions for your workers.Last tym i checked i was so disappointed.Only senior management is enjoying working for ZRA & probably those at thre border
corruption is rampant in zra.
I am happy that ZRA is spending money where it should be but ZRA please do something about your Lusaka main office it is an eye sore and an embarrasment to our city beauty. If it cannot be painted please cover it with glass.
It is good to hear this. But why would the grader be coming all the way from Kasama? You mean a town that is second in revenue collecting cannot bost of having a local grader? Come one Zedians, we need to be serious! The project should not only focus on ZRA offices but also on Immigration Offices.
