Fugitive driver resurfaces

Share

The minibus driver who caused the accident in which 13 people died at Kabangwe in Lusaka last week has surrendered himself to the police.

The driver who ran away immediately after the accident on Thursday surrendered himself to officers at Kabangwe police post at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Bonny Kapeso said the driver has been arrested and charged with thirteen counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr. Kapeso said the driver will appear in court soon.

Eleven people died on the spot while two others died at UTH after the minibus they were in collided head-on with an oncoming international truck at the junction of Ngwerere cemetery turn off on Thursday last week.

Meanwhile eleven suspects have been arrested and formally charged with obtaining pecuniary advantage by false presences and impersonating public officers.

This follows investigations into the matter involving seven people from the copperbelt province who were staying at a named lodge in Chilenje township in Lusaka purporting that President Rupiah Banda will appoint them into the foreign service.

Acting Inspector General of Police, Francis Kabonde that a named Ndola based magistrate, his wife who is a senior police officer and a civilian were the master minds of the scam.

He explained that the three duped four police officers into believing that they would provide security to those appointed in diplomatic services, forcing the officers to proceed on leave.

Mr. Kabonde said further investigations have proved that the accused persons have been staying at the named lodge from 18th December last year to 8th January this year.

He said all the accused persons will appear in court Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. Kabonde said investigations have also established that none of the accused persons are related to the first family as alleged.

The acting Inspector General of Police has strongly warned that his office will not allow anyone to bring the President’s name into ridicule.

  1. He must surely follow singogo in jail. However i commend him for resurfacing. Any bad acts suruly hound. Mulandu tauligwi cucu.

  2. Having been to Zed recentlt & observed the drivers behaviour, i belive all drivers need to be retested. They need to start respecting other road users and passengers. For a long tym passengers have been taken for granted thinking they have no alternative to get to the final destination.

  3. Pa zambia pali drama. The second part of the article makes very interesting reading. The magistrate and his wife who is a senior police officer ‘lying’ makes one wonder wheather people respect the Laws of Zambia.

  4. Its gud th@ he has surrendere himself to the police, because those live’s th@ where lost cld hav been avoided, had he followed the rules pamusebo…nw the law shall take its course.

  5. smart driver.if he hadn’t run away after the accident he was going to be another victim of mob justice.13 people is a big number, let the courts of law get to the bottom of the matter. :):):)

  6. I hope and pray the operator of the bus has insurance to compensate the grieving families. The driver issue is a felony, but the problem is who will his boss bribe? The guy committed 13 counts of involuntary manslaughter, but they interpret fleeing the scene also might complicate the case. But please, insurance, learn to compensate these families. They are not animals and deserve their respect.

  7. Its shameful to see people getting down the cooking pot, but then that is where they deserve to be. Peace Zambia, Peace!

  8. The Police in Zambia are the most corrupt people in society because they are underpaid and have found corruption as a means of making ends meet.Unless government through the law enforcing agencies addresses this so called nchekelako culture predominant in the force, the fight against corruption will always be a lost battle.

The other issue is that the police are controlled by politicians and they cannot go were the evidence leads them without the blessings of the policians.

  9. HE KILLED, HE MADE OTHER LOSE LIMBS AND OTHER VITAL ORGANS. DID SOMEONE JUST SAY MR. MASEBO IS THE OWNER OF THE KILLER BUS? HE IS VICARIOUSLY LIABLE.

  10. Bloggers it was an accident the man must not be condemned at all. He did not wish for that to happen. Its a pity he ran away instead of facing the consequences. But nevertheless let him pay for his deeds.

  11. #20 This is the most silly comment i have read on this blog. How honestly can you sympathise with a driver overtaking 6 vehicles in a convoy how? We are talking of innocent human beings whose lives were taken by a careless imbwa and all you can say is dont condemn him? Ndiwe ofuntha maningi. What if there was yo family members in there?

  12. #20 A sober and measured reflection. It’s a pity though that no one in ZED has any respect for the country and its laws. We get worked up when foreigners disregard our laws and yet they only follow our example. It seems in the 21st century people still expect a free ride by just mentioning the President’s name. If I were the hotel owner, I would still insist on payment upfront! You can’t trust anybody.

  13. This driver must spend the rest of his life in jail. He has destroyed people’s lives due to his carelessness and I have no reason to sympathise with him. Didn’t he know as PSV driver that his job was to safeguard people’s lives and property during their travels? We need to introduce driver awareness courses which they must pay for before we give them a PSV licence.

  14. All mini bus drivers should go for refresher driving course, they are so careless and i believe most of them they dont even know traffic rules.Secondly police in Zambia are not seriously enforcing the law that prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, in most cases these drivers they drink abit when their buses are loading.

  15. #25 u r so right!! Every time I visit home am so scared of jumping into those buses. The drivers have no regard for the laws which are in place. The laws that are meant to safeguard their passengers, and other road users lives. Its trully a shame that he behaved in such a reckless manner!!

  16. Hey#21 do not silly by saying I sympathise with the driver ok! All I was trying to put across is that even when the accident happened the driver did not wish for it you understand. No one wishes for such a thing to happen even if he was somehow careless. I also said let him face the consequnces of his deeds, in what sense did I sympathise with? Do not just comment on other peoples’ read and understand what they trying to say.

  17. the guy has resurfaced, thats good and we hope he shows remorse and faces the consequences. he might have run away from possible mob justice. but hey! “Drive safely observe traffic rule” he is such a loser l-)

  18. #24 I concur with you, all the bus drivers must go back for tests.
Moreover, the blame should be on our corrupt RTS officers. They issue out driving licenses anyhow.

  19. Lodge management should have asked for a deposit or at least call state house to verify. It’s such acts by management that causes business to go down.
Sad reading though that law enforcers themselves are the ones in the forefront of this scandal. Shame!

  20. Rightly put Cutey, accidents are indeed unforseen incidents. But this driver needs a good lawyer 13 counts of causing death by dangerous driving is major. He must be looking at more than 5 years. But him resurfacing will be a good point during mitigation.

  21. The chap knew what he had done and the conseqeunces. Just had to run to save his dear life then face the law later.

  22. Well, this is what Zairians used to do when their own one Kafupi Chabala was president. The likes of Katumbi and the other mkaladi Soriano would come and take all contracts even for guns and not honour them just because Kafupi was like them from Musangu village in Katanga ka Le Zaire. Now all Nyasas from Blantyre and Lilongwe want to come here and loot, awe sure, enough is enough, start arresting these plunderers.

  23. The Man is a hero one thing we should know is that no one can be happy to kill a fellow human being, all those who think that this man killed them delibaretry may God charge you,if it was someone else he or she was going to commit suicide but we thank God he brought himself back in the hands of the police,May God forgive and defend him in court.

  24. I call upon all metal products of all generations to donate some funds towards this.

He said the school had sunk five boreholes but did not have hand pumps and other accessories for the boreholes to become operational.

Kakumbi said Chizongwe Technical High School was not connected to Eastern Water and Sewerage Company.

He also said the school was in need of funds to rehabilitate the school hall, which he said was in a dilapidated state.

Kakumbi further urged former pupils to help address the problems the school was facing.

“We need help from well-wishers, former Chizongwe pupils and the government to urgently address these problems,” Kakumbi said.
