ZAWA to auction wild animals in May

Share

Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) says it will in May 2009 start auctioning live wild animals to local and foreigners.

ZAWA Executive Director Mr. Davies Saiuwa told ZANIS that the animals will be sold through an auction sell that will allow members of the public to choose the animals and bid for them.

Mr.Saiuwa however said that the auction sale will be done in absentia of the wild animals as there were no public facilities to house the animals were buyer can view them during the auctioning.

He said the purpose of having the auction sale is to raise funds for conservation and rehabilitating some national parks that he said were in a deplorable state.

Mr.Saiuwa said the organization will carry out advisements to allow both international and local bidders have a chance to know which animals will be auctioned.

He further said that ZAWA will help transport the animals for successful bidders from other countries.

He said that the animals that will be auctioned include Buffaloes, Impalas, Antelopes, Zebras and many others. These animals will be poached from different National parks in the country.

  1. This is funny…auctioning wild animals in Zambia..never heard of that before…but hey if thats what it takes to turn things around, go for it.

  2. hhhhhmmmm sounds like slave trade….the highest bidder takes the slave. As an animal lover, this kind of croping game did not go well down my throught. Give the animals some dignity.

  3. Can I preorder two impalas? Good meat. Animal lover#2 the animals will not be at the auction. Unless you are a Vegan, chickens, cows and imichopo dont get too much dignity either. Wildlife is just helping giving a helping hand to the food chain, it’s called Ecology.

  4. who gives them the right to auction the wild animals. just like most tree’s are being auctioned as timber for rich peoples furniture as a result global warming!!!! NEXT auction Zedian land to magoregore’s

  5. Is it a new law or policy to auction game from National Parks instead of GMA? I thought NP were exclusively for conservation purposes where only camping, game viewing and photography are done but not hunting or auction whatever it is? Why should they poach these animals when this auction is legal???

  6. Then we can bid for crocs and have them sent wherever we are ,slaughter them for thier blood ,fat, meat and skin

  7. poor **== animals, they sure wish they were born as “Knut” a bear born in a german Zoo” than in the african wilderness. In a couple of decades african children will only be hearing stories about african wildlife which used to exist but long gone, not even rats, worms, or butterfly cocoons are safe on **== ground. Every living things KAOFELA even your own dog called bobby is auctioned as muchopo pa chi bar, Awiiiiiiiiiiiii

  8. Oh my goodness!!! We have just been fooled! There will be no animal sale. Its April Fools day and to think I even ordered 2 impalas! I am ashamed.

  9. By the way , spring chicken , when I was young I eat hopani , though from my church is not accepted. Two years ago I eat crocs meat from kalimba crocs farm…..

  10. What is animal cropping???? ?That I was taught by my good teachers in secondary school . Yes in Zambia.I respect the role of CITES and ZAWA HAS DONE WELL to follow the rules. Thought ZAWA was managed by Dr something …… I need education on this.

  11. I hope everyone on here who takes this issue so lightly realizes what is going on. They are selling them to be poached people! If anyone of you is from zambia or loves zambia or has ever been to zambia will know what I’m sayin…Why should that be allowed! They are our symbols and they are precious! On the list of animals, they have not mentioned lions and other precious, very few, big cats! How can you sell priceless jewels like that? UTTER JOKE! OUR GOVERNMENT NEEDS A WAKE UP CALL FROM THE MAN UPSTAIRS!!!!!

  12. #20, gday to you Bo Wiseman,
forget about the other posting. Havent looked back at it. Not worth the salt or time or a dime.Everyone in here is entiltled to their views, good or bad. If it tastes bad, bad luck or just skip it. One doesnt need to show off that they can fight..better with words than others.. no wonder their short tails get chopped off by L.T..
    said too much? then forgive…

  13. Yaba, stories from Zed makes me laugh. What the hell is this kind of auction? Please someone help me…. LOL

  14. Well it really leaves one wondering, how many organisations are in charged of the National parks in Zambia? National Tourist Board of Zambia collects millions of monies from tourists and I think thats the money they need to use to keep the national parks in good shape and suitable conditions to attract more tourists. This idea of auctioning some animals is not in good faith and will paint a very bad picture on the tourists sector. Its the duty of the orgainisations that collect money from tourists to rehabilitate and conserve the National parks. If this is allowed to done, then every year they will be auctioning the animals because the conservation is an on going process.

  15. Ignorant people, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana auction animals all the time. This is for people like Lilayi lodge with game farms, hunting farms etc. Namibia makes a lot of money, which in turn is used to conservation. The animals are not auctioned so that you eat them. i hope this educates you ba mbuli.

  16. This is not the 1st Auction by ZAWA. Last year the was another Auction.Sable Antelope was bought at $3600. The highest bidder for the Antelope was from Namibian Wildlife Services. Other bidders came from SA, Congo and the local Game Ranchers. Bazungus were the Marjority.

  17. I dont think auction is the only way to raise funds, why not put all the animal in a nice zoo e.g. Mundawanga. If the place is well run, it can l attract tourists to the country. Mundawanga has potential, but the pipo in charge has no clue how to run it. please take the animals to the Mundawanga and you will see the rewards.
Stop the Auction. At the moment there are only 2 animals at the Mundawanga.

  18. Tosh, you sound like a smagler, why take move the animals for their Natural habitart? would you like it if the same was done to you?

  19. # 30 Shidada waya sana, Iwe Kwerekwere, couldn’t you’ve posted your comment without adding ” ba mbuli” I always eat game meat in resturants where you scrub floors in Windhoek, Cape T. Lilayi lodge, even in Nairobi…

  20. Might as well put the said animals in Game stores so that the bidding can be meaninful!! In absentia futi?

  21. Afropean, are you bitter that some Zambians live outside Zambia? Living outside Zambia does not make me more or less Zambian. Srub floors, why don’t you join us, its quick money!!
Why are you people so ignorant about the state auctoning game? In fact a Stable is so expensive that a game lodge I visited in northern Namibia last month said, it would not buy it because lions of the farm can easily eat them-which would be a lose. Afropean, by the way get a Zambian name and get off your high horse from Sikanaze Police Camp.

  22. i think pipo r just trying to sound holier than thou! firstly if u know enough u know that many times animals have to be culled in many national parks in zed to keep the balance of nature, remember man is also part of that balance, so instead of culling why not sell them. some pipo arguing here for animal rights are the first to wash their hands when bush meat is served on their table. In fact its a good way to use resources disposable to them, i hope everyone complaining here is a vegetarian/vegan and does not go to zoos because how do u think u find lions in American zoos? they swam there?

  23. 38 Mukwa fimo fimo, what you talking like so , dont you know that having a lot of animal will attract touritss, why do you think tourists go on Safari?

  24. #39BA honey is necessary to maintain the balance of nature. As u know humans once depended largely on animals of wild before animal rearing n humans are part of the balance of nature. this is why there is also hunting season, because the animal families can be in excess therefore killing off of some is necessary to maintain balance of nature, if hunting cannot take care of the excess the govt can go in kill some. you don’t want to have excess of zebras or impalas or other herbivores becoz this will lead to overgrazing, anyway i wont give you a lecture in ecology maybe u shud just read more, better to profit from animals than just kill them off,

  25. “Shifimofimo” I”d rather stay mounted on the one outside the gates of Nr:)Downing St. Thank you! Next you’ll be supporting the idea of preventing nsima overgrazing Zedians due to shortage of mealisi.

  26. Valuable info. Fortunate me I found your website by accident, and I’m stunned why this accident did not took place earlier! I bookmarked it.
