Kafue Clean refuse bins turned into storage facilities for water and mealie meal

Share

A chief officer at Kafue district council has expressed disappointment with residents in Kafue estates who have turned refuse bins distributed to them under the Keep Kafue Clean Campaign programme for garbage collection into storage facilities for water and mealie meal .

Acting Council Secretary, Albert Hamayanda, told ZANIS in an interview today that some residents in Kafue estates were using the refuse bins to store water and mealie meal, which he said was wrong.

Mr Hamayanda said the council last year embarked on a programme to purchase refuse bins under the campaign so as to encourage residents to safely dispose of their garbage instead of using pits behind the back yards.

He said a total of 250 bins were bought and distributed to commercial outlets in the main town, markets and households in the estates.

He said a survey the local authority to monitor how the bins were being used revealed that many of the bins in the households were storage facilities for water and mealie meal.

The acting Council Secretary appealed to residents to immediately stop the practice as it was defeating the whole purpose of the Keep Kafue Clean campaign.

Mr Hamayanda noted that use of pits is being discouraged by the council as it had environmental effects.

Mr Hamayanda said his office was happy that the two trucks given to the council by government last year were being utilized well in Chilanga and Kafue townships for garbage collection.

He said his office will continue striving to ensure that cleanliness is maintained in public areas.

Mr Hamayanda also disclosed that the council will purchase more refuse bins so that each and every households can have bins in both Chilanga and Kafue townships.

  1. This once I am attacking the taxpayers themselves Inyungulu ni za Garbage. People in Zambia amaze me at times, why cry for the council to work, and when they do you keep the bins for storage. Senario: One one tells her neighbur they can use the bins for keeping Unga, that the council shall distribute more; then that woman tells her friends and relatives and the do the same. Do we have to tie the bin to the water bill so as they know they are paying for trash collection. Awe!!!!! The eighties were nice, we hard City council collect bins and not one person stole them, manje muliunga.

  2. oh my God! Where do they put their garbage for collection since they use bins for water and mealie meal storage?

  3. The council should tie in the bins and garbage collection to the water bill, then they Taxpayers of Kafue shall not do as they are at the moment. The need totes so as they can store their food and water. Diasporians what I have laid down for you is a money making venture for our families at home. That way they can pay school fees and invest in substantial projects, do you not agree Prosperous. hahahahahahahahahaha Awe bantu ku Zambia some times.

  4. Imported solutions. There you go. Thats is what happens when you just go abroad copy solutions and dump them on the masses without doing a needs analysis. Just because bins work in the west, you think they will work in Kafue. Why not just build them a posch “Maganda” or “Malabo” or “Pa Chisala” for them to dump their things and then send a truck regularly there to collect the refuse.

  5. Where is everyone, ma exam yayamba ka? I guess not too many people shall be blogging as much. To all the students, all the best and my prayer is that God strengthens your minds and the Holy Spirit removes burdens from your hearts so you can study and remember your acquired knowledge and skills, in Jesus name I am praying. My prayers for the families and individuals working and living in lands connected to LT, we can all always make it hard work and determination, God shall get us there. later.

  6. This is what happens if you start development through the back door. It is not the residents to blame but the Government which decided to give them clean bins for garbage while residents were desperate looking for containers to store water into first. Next time listen to the people first before you make decisions that you will end up regretting. It is like giving a lonely lion a small rabbit to keep him company.

  7. There hasnt been residential garbage collection in Zambia for years. The residents were simply confused. Let them know what the bins are for and they will comply. (wishful thinking)

  8. Mwanawakitu, i think the govt should just make silos in each home so that people have where to store their supplies or else there shall never be garbage bins available-:)

Chinondo…. I am not sure collecting garbage from “Maganda” or “Malabo” or “Pa Chishala” would work. And for health reasons, i don’t recommend it unless we want the whole Zed to die of cholera and to be proclaimed a “STINKING” nation.

  9. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha Silos in the home, woman of substance had to say they residents are confused hahahahahahahahahaha I know they look, Jamaco put the icing on the cake with the back door development clause I need some water hahahahahahaha.

  10. The issue of garbage has not been given serious attention by Minister of local Govt. In Lusaka and many other towns , it is really an eyesore. National housing Authority used to to do some good work before their houses sold were sold for political gain without due consideration of matters of sanitation..Let the political parties work together on this issue their members are all affected in the same way

  11. Haa hhah, what do you expect especially when they are new bins??
Garbage refusal collection will remain a mystery in Zambia.

  12. Lack of public education on the party of the government causes all of this to happen, those poor pipo have no idea about the importance of those refuse bins, because they were probably not educated.

  13. Kafue council once you make a consensus in council chamber for the public make sure they are aware about it and put strong orders.

  14. People must be given education on what is expected. For now the right hting to do is fine those misusing the bins. The law must be followed.

  15. #15. mwiponta mukabwela. i don’t think its lack of education. people know exactly what to use those bins for and yet thay deem it as irrelevant. how many times have people received education on HIV for instance and dive in “there” unprotected thinking fakaisova!

  16. A lot of you bloggers here do not always put things and issues in the right perspective and context. Do not behavior like UFOs and liens from planet mars and other space beings , let us look at what is applicable for Zambia… and provide solutions . Common ground for all political parties ,religious demagogues and fanatics ..cleanliness is next to godliness , we start from here..clean our environement

  17. Hard times call for hard measures. Why store garbage when one can store food? I assure you keeping the town clean is the last thing on their minds in these hard times.

  18. Let us face it a lot Zambians would rather receive than work , we are just lazy period. we can not do manual work l that is considered to be inferior and that is where the blame lies . We would rather have vibrio cholera than clean our own surroundings…hypocrites and liars we are

  19. lets face it … we study development and appreciate that western development does not work in africa and then we get jobs with councils as district planning officers and then we do what development studies told us not to do. its the whole country that has a prob. the academics, the professionals and the people – the masses. they love cheap and thus we must give them that, cheap methods like in Kalingalinga where the refuses are large-scale and everyone just goes there to dump. in this case responsibility goes back to council to be collecting from that point!

  20. If those taps had running water, these people would not be using the bins. If the economy was better people would not have been bothered about stocking up on ubunga. A family of four deosn`t need more than 10kg of ubunga in a month. But because we have ubwali twice a day as main meals, they have no chioce but to stock up in those bins because amasaka yacabe cabe, yalapusha ubunga.

  21. Dont the council have the power to inspect and confiscate any Bins used for either Unga or Manzi, Whats wrong with these pipo, they dont know that using the bins will reduce Chorera and other diseases. The council need to educate these pipo, before giving them the Bins.
There is a saying “You can take Maggie out of Village, but you cant take Village out of Maggie.”

  22. #24 3RqU , what did they use to store Ubungaor Manzi before being given the Bins? if the Bin is for Rubbish, then rubbish must go in the Bin, not Ubunga.

  23. I think these are the wheelie bins as i saw many around towns and cities when i went home last holiday. The 200litre one.And one man who is into manutacturing plastic products told me the same that people when they see such others see an opportunity where to store water. Of course i where i was people dont use them for water but after reading this article i rembered that man that people in other towns decided to do just that. I was it Kabwe by the way.

  24. Imwe bantu, this is getting serious now. Anyway the council should go on the ground, perhaps using popular theatre to educate kafue people on the matter at hand.by the way is VJ back from malawi where he was reported to have gone 2 help rip elections?
